Wayne and Curt on the tee box

Photo: Wayne and Curt getting ready to tee off this morning. Liked it enough to post it all by itself. Don't remember what it was they were reacting to - yes, I do - it was the Amish gentleman and his horse and buggy.

Potts, Bird, Stoll and Doyle Triumph

Photo: Wayne and Curt on #1; the four of them, the 'other' team: Wayne, Delbert, Curt and Junior, on #2 tee box.

Greg Potts, Mike Bird, Karry Stoll and Joe Doyle prevailed in the Saturday Manager's scramble. A birdie chip in by Greg on #8 and then two up and downs from just off the green on #9 gave the team a score of one under in the modified scramble. The team of Wayne Souerdike, Junior Byron, Curt Johnson and Delbert Stoll came in a stroke back at even par, finding the short #7 hole again being a bear of a place to make par. The team's double bogey on that hole bordering the lake and just short enough to throw one's game all out of whack, hurtled them from a possible one stroke victory to a one stroke loss.

Saturday Scramble, Curt and Bric, Bo and Lady Godiva

Tomorrow's Manager's scramble will be a nine hole event starting at 9 o'clock. Of course, a second nine can be played by those wanting to extend their merriment.

Forgot to mention earlier that Curt and Bric brought to my attention their combined score on #6 yesterday - a sterling 10. You remember that they turned in a 20 (two tens) on the same hole just ten days ago, something that was duly noted by yours truly, my saying something about 'perfect tens'. BTW, Bric remembered, or never forgot, that it was Bo Derek that had that moniker some twenty years ago - was it that long? longer? Just googled it - a 1979 movie with the title 10. That would make it just about thirty years ago. My oh my. Go here for a picture of Bo making like that famous naked lady riding a horse bareback (Lady Godiva).

Kidwell's Eagle, Community League Action, Couples, Putting Photo

Photo: Tuesday Men putting on #3 green; only Chris Bledsoe's putt dropped into the hole. He's the one on the upper right in the photo.

A couple of notes on yesterday's happenings at the golf course:

-Mike Kidwell eagled #2 by rolling in a 25 footer just off the green using his three wood. Neat trick.

-Tarry Bratton dragged Karry Stoll out to the golf course after dinner where they played their initial round in the Community League. Patty Bowling did the same with Wilma Bateman a little earlier in the day.

-Jim and Leanne Love were also out there after dinner as were Herb and Loretta Roach. And a lot of Tuesday Men made an appearance, getting in their rained out event of this past Tuesday. And a bunch of other golfers as well!

-Mike Arvin came out early in the day and dropped off a sign up sheet for the Summerfest golf scramble. It's posted on the bulletin board.

Seniors Event 7 Notes and Comments

Charlie Sheetz was more like his old 2007 self and came in with the low net of the day, a 30. He was followed by several players at 31: Dale DeLong, Virgil Harper, Al Kavanaugh and Clyde Wake. Al also shared low gross for the day with Mike Anderson, each shooting a 39. Low net team score was turned in by Virgil Harper and Don Lannan, a nifty 63. Sharpshooters were Dale DeLong, Sam Potts, Al Kavanaugh and Ray Shaw. At the end of play, Richard Swayze and Mike Bird held onto the top spot in Team competition, though slowed down by Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson, with a total of 60.5 points and are followed by the Dave Strange/Clyde Wake team with 56 points. Clyde Wake jumped into the lead in the Individual competition with 251 points, with Al Kavanaugh and Richard Swayze tied for second at 227 points. Birdies for the day went to Virgil Harper on #2 and Jack Butcher on #4; most pars at six were made by Al Kavanaugh and Mike Bird.

Senior Golfers, Come on Down!

Time for the Seniors to show their stuff again. Did you know that five years ago today Kenny Hudson was in the lead? He was followed by myself, Leroy Streepy, Junior Byron and Cecil Pennington. In Team competition, Junior and Kenny were teamed up and leading the pack; Jerry Tredway and Cecil were second with Rex Hudson and myself third. Weather was sunny and nice with temperatures in the 70's.

Course is in excellent condition. Bring your clubs and come on down and have fun.

John, Emily, Erin, Chris and Ashley at the golf course

At the golf course this afternoon.

June and Judy Photo

The two of them were out just the other day. Caught them finishing up on hole #2.

Expect some of the Tuesday Men to be out today, making up the game that was postponed with yesterday's afternoon storm. Today's pretty hefty winds will dry the course out some. Thursday Seniors tomorrow - looks like the weather is favorable.

Rain Events and a few other notes

Go here to see what the Tuesday Men's League rules have to say about 'rain events'.

During the heavier part of the storm, around 4 pm, all players on the course came off the course, leaving rounds to be finished at a later time. Junior and Kevin Byron came out a little later when there was a break in the rains and did get their rounds in - I went along just for fun. Even with the early light drizzle and then the heavier drizzle, the two of them did very well, Junior coming in with a 36 and Kevin a 44 which gave them a combined 6 under for their rounds.

Bob Norris, near 85 years old, showed up for his Community League initial event with Clyde Wake, an 83 year old. Bob found himself a birdie on #9, rolling in a 6' putt. First time in several years he has had a birdie. He also found that the drier fairways were giving his drives a much appreciated roll.
Today's Tuesday Men's League has been declared a "rain event" as of 3:40 this afternoon. This means those who have not completed their round today have until next week (Tuesday) to finish up this week's event.

Tuesday Men Memorial Week

I see the weather people are calling for a 'few showers' till 3pm then just plain old 'showers' after that. Well, hope it doesn't materialize till after dark and the Tuesday Men show does go on. Mother Nature has been very good to the Tuesday bunch so far this year - bless her.

Five years ago in Tuesday Men: Leaders in Individual Competition: Greg Potts, closely followed by Wayne Souerdike, Junior Byron and Mark Potts. Team Competition: Potts and Potts had a three point lead on Atkison and Voegerl. Terry Butcher had low gross with a 35 with 9 pars on his scorecard; Junior Byron shot a 36 for second low. Skip Ackerman had the low net with a 28 (37 gross) with Junior coming in second again with a net 30; Terry Butcher, Murray Stuckey and Jim Murphy had net 31's. Weather was partly sunny with a high of 81.

Back here in 2008, it's about time to start thinking about which A player will get to the magical zero handicap first. Dave Wininger is sitting close with a one this week while Doug Denson, Phil Eyler, James Hager and Trenton Kidwell all have twos; super sub Mark Potts is beyond the zero mark with his gaudy +2 handicap.

Leaders as we go into today's play: Sutton and Courter in the team competition and Dave Wininger is up on James Hager by a slim four points in the Individual standings. Today is also week two of the Individual Handicapped Tournament. Noah Callahan is on top with his gaudy net 27 last Tuesday; Tim Voegerl sits in second place at 29.

Eric and Junior have the course looking lovely and the ball is actually starting to roll a bit in the fairways. If the rains hold off, guess we should see some good golfing today.

Tribune article for the week

Loogootee Tribune article for the week of May 26th:

Two Scramble Winners at Lakeview

The Saturday morning scramblers at Lakeview Golf Course divided themselves into a nine hole bunch and an eighteen hole bunch for fun and games this Memorial Day weekend. The eighteen hole event, a six hole scramble, a six hole best ball and a six hole alternate shot game, was played by twelve golfers with the team of Doug Denson, Mark Sherer and Kevin Byron firing a two under par to take the trophy. At even par were the teams of Short Jeffers, Mike Bird and Karry Stoll, and Terry Butcher, Derek Gilbertson and Gary Knepp. Fourth place honors went to the team of Dave Wininger, Junior Byron and Rob Sterling with a score of three over par. Of note: the Jeffers team had the best scramble score at four under; the Butcher team had the best Best Ball score at a plus one; and the Denson team had the best Alternate Shot score with a one under. The Denson team sealed its win by coming in at minus one on the final three holes; by contrast, the Butcher team fell from contention by bogeying the last two holes. Double bogeys on #9 and #15 sank the Jeffers team while the Wininger team fired a five over par on holes ten, eleven and twelve to minimize its chance of victory.
In the nine hole scramble, Mike and Trenton Kidwell paired with Jack and Jordan Divine to best the team of Tyler Kidwell, Wayne Souerdike and Greg Potts.

Seniors Event 6 Notes and Comments:

Jack Butcher and Richard Swayze's 69's gave them a share of 2nd place while Bob Norris shared fourth with Mike Bird with scores of 70.

Number nine green gatherings

Photos: two different groups of golfers finishing up on #9 late this afternoon. Jim and Leanne Love along with Bruce Wade and Lacey Denson - looks like Leanne is showing Bruce the finer points of putting; four campers (and fishermen) with four balls nicely surrounding the flag - a fifth golfer is just off camera.

Memorial Day tomorrow. Got the Bramble Scramble starting at 8am - a 20 some group that is playing nine holes.

Golf and kicking the can and speeding boats

Bill and Chuck and Al had other things to think about as they played golf yesterday, like 'kick the can' or speeding boats or the perfectly lovely day. They did continue on with their golf game in spite of the distractions. They did remember playing kick the can; still something youngsters do?

Tuesday Men Event 6 Results

The results are posted. Highlights:

-Short Jeffers took a quadruple bogey on #4 for an otherwise pretty good round of 39.
-The team of Curt Johnson and Bric Parker had fun on #6, each player taking a double par on the hole – perfect 10’s?

They teamed up to shoot a net 64 which shared the low net for the day.
-Mike Kidwell played par golf a different way, going bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie on the first four holes; then a par, bogey before parring the last three holes, ending with a 36.
-Weston Muessig bogeyed the first hole then parred out for his sterling 36.
-Dave Wininger, the new leader of the individual competition, had a roller coaster ride, getting two birdies to start his round, then two bogeys, then ending up with pars but for a slip on #8 to end with his 36.

-Tim Voegerl shot a 42 and netted 29 to come in second in low net.

-Low net team scores were turned in by the Albertson/Jones team and the Allen/Rominger team with 64's.
-Average gross of 44.30 was slightly better than last week's 44.52.

Photos up in a bit.

Brent Courter had the low net with a 28 and was followed by Shannon Bratton and Blake Stewart, both with 30's. Dave Wininger shot a 33 (wow!) for the low gross and was followed by Shannon Bratton, John Walker and Greg Potts with 37's. Warren Atkison dragged in the caboose with a 56 (ouch). Average gross for the day was 43.89.

Seniors play tomorrow - in between the raindrops

Photo: A group of golfers up from Santa Claus had a go in the gloom of an overcast day.

Yes we are hoping that we don't have to play in between the raindrops. One rainout is quite enough in a season and we had that last week. By the way, that rainout has been rescheduled for August 7th. As with last week, we'll keep a close eye on the weather and post a delay or postponement by 7:30 if there is one. Otherwise we start play at 8am. It is wet out there so bring an extra pair of socks; and your rubber ducky if you want to...

Boat People Photo

While Tuesday Men played golf, others rode on still waters and fished for edibles.

Update Wednesday noon: Late yesterday afternoon, I was out with my camera and tripod taking pictures of the golfers when the gentleman on the left in the boat called out that he would take an 8x10. So I took a picture and let him know where he could find it. Hope he finds it; it's a good one.

A few of the comments made while I was in the clubhouse when golfers finished their rounds (I subbed for Jason Rominger and went out witrh Joe Allen, Mike and Tyler Kidwell shortly after 6):

-Weston Muessig shoots a 39 which includes a couple of double bogies and an eagle.
-Mike Albertson comes in with a 47 and saying something about an ‘S’ word.
-Trenton Kidwell starts off with a birdie and follows that with two bogies but finds another birdie at #6 to come in with an even par.
-Sutton/Courter team vaults into first place with Sutton in Africa.

Pictures and maybe more comments later.

Tuesday Men - Another Chance for Glory

Looks like another good day for golf for the Tuesday Men. A little wet on the course what with the four inches of rain we had Thursday through Sunday - makes the greens soft and receptive but the fairways are the same - no bump and run today unless you hit the cart paths.

Five years ago in the Tuesday league, Mark Potts led the Individual competition with Tim Voegerl and Warren Atkison ahead in the Team. Dave Wininger shot a 35 and Shannon Bratton, Mark Potts, Mark Jeffers and Phil Eyler shot 37's. Joe Allen had a net 29 and Shannon Bratton a net 30. Average gross score for the day was 44.56. Weather was sunny and mild with temperatures ranging from the 70's to the 50's. (Do things change much?)

Senior Golfers Swing and Swing and Swing and Swing

Four pretty good golfers out at Lakeview this morning.
