Jeffers and Johnson Win Saturday Scramble

Short Jeffers and Curt Johnson carded a four under in the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview.  That tied them with Tracy Rayhill and Mike Arvin and the Jeffers/Johnson team won the tie breaking card draw.  Wayne Souerkike and Joe Allen shot a -3 while Mike Bird and Paul Hart came in at even par to complete the scoring.

Of note:

-Tracy and Mike birdied holes eight and nine to tie Short and Curt.
-Wayne and Joe missed short putts at holes 5 and 8 after super pitch shots from the fairway.
-Lady luck shining on Short Jeffers as he took two teams to wins on the weekend, each with a tie breaker.
-Lady Luck not shining on Mike Arvin as he was on the two teams that claimed second place in each instance.

Jeffers, Jeffers, Atkison and Hardman win K of C Scramble

Short Jeffers, Warren Atkison, Dennis Hardman and Shirley Jeffers carded an eleven under round at the K of C Scramble at Lakeview on Sunday.  That tied them with the team of Mike Bird, Mike Arvin and Mark Trout and gave them the win with a birdie on the 18th hole when the tie breaker was used.  Five other teams participated.

Stan Graber Nabs First Career Ace at Lakeview

Stan Graber came out to Lakeview Golf Course on a Sunday afternoon for a walk with friends Marvin Graber and Kerry Wagler and went home with his first career hole-in-one.  At Lakeview's #3, using a Ping G5 7 iron, Stan lofted his shot to within two feet of the flag 142 yards away.  Landing in front of the pin, the Titleist NXT Tour ball checked up and then rolled the final two feet and dropped into the cup.  High fives were immediately exchanged among the players who were witnessing their first ever hole-in-ones.  Congratulations, Stan.

K of C Sunday Scramble

Tomorrow's K of C scramble will start at 9am.  Terry Butcher expects to put together the teams between 8:30 and 8:45 and will be in the clubhouse area.

As bright as his future appears, it's nearly been eclipsed by the present. That's because while still taking a full course load at a prestigious undergraduate program, he's won two tournament titles at the game's most elite level and ascended to a spot amongst the top 20 golfers in the world.

It's something that none of the legends have accomplished. Jack Nicklaus wasn't winning pro events while attending Ohio State; Tiger Woods wasn't racking 'em up at Stanford.

So, what do you think? Pretty impressed by this hypothetical up-and-comer? Would you be ready to declare him the Next Big Thing in golf?

Thursday Match Players - Time to Shine!

-Event 2 starts at ten this morning and we have good weather in store for us.  Bugs are still around so cover yourself with some of the good stuff that dis-attracts the little buggers.

-Course is in great condition - more like June and July as George Templin says.

-Need subs.  Only one of the four open spots is filled - guess that means we still need three.  Come on out and have some fun with us - show us how good your game can be.  And test ours at the same time.

-Last week's super sub, Mike Strawn, won't be around this week to build on that great beginning.  Anna Mosby also had a great start and she, too, will be among the missing - she's off to New York for a little bit (that's a great place to spend some time!).

-So, grab your bag, gather up your A game and come on out for a little fun in the April sun.  See some of you in just a little bit.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Second event of the season and the course is looking good.  On top of that, pretty fair weather and, for the last couple of days, no bugs!  Expecting scores to be in the good category today - no more first day jitters, pretty good run on the fairways, little wind.  Pack up your clubs and your A game and come on out and give it your best shot.  Eric tells me there are lots of eagles and birdies out there just waiting to be picked up.  Come on down, guys; lets see what the golf gods and goddesses have in store for us today.  Good stuff, I am sure.

Note: #1 hole is on the far left and read right to #9 on the far right.  The single digits are the degree of hardness with 1 being the hardest and 9 the easiest.  The second number is the amount over par on each hole (i.e. Tuesday Men averaged 5.36 on the first hole, 1.36 over par, and 3.8 on the 9th hole, .80 over par).  The first hole was by far the most difficult while #7 was the easiest for both leagues.

-No bugs the last two days with the cooler temps.

Young Guns Win Saturday Scramble

Matt Burch, James Hager and Paul Hart, all twenty something, found birdies at holes two, four, five and nine and managed pars at the other four to win the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview.  On a cool and windy morning, the foursome's round of 31 bested two other teams:  Mike Bird, Tracy Rayhill and Kevin Byron finished with a 33 on their round while Wayne Souerdike (looking for a third consecutive Saturday morning win), son Spencer and Joe Allen finished a 34.

Never quite know what you are going to see at the golf course.  The couple are heading off to the Forest Park prom after completing the dinner and the walk at Boggs Lake.

Bits and Pieces: The Bubba Shot, Michelle Wie, and a Dave Pelz Putting Tip along with Photos of the Hager Boy and Hart, Burch and Johnson

-Saturday Morning Scramble at 10am tomorrow.

-The Bubba shot - not all that hard.  Take a look at E. Michael Johnson's article at golfdigest.com to get an explanation and to see how it's done.  Then, for the righties out there, try a shot from behind or just to the right of the big oak on hole #1 at Lakeview, about 135 yards for a pin placement on the left side of the green - you'll be looking across the bridge and 'hooking' your shot to reach the green for the easy two putt par.

-Michelle Wie not playing on the weekend again.  She shot 76-78 in the Lotte Championship over at her growing up course in Hawaii and missed the cut.  That is the third straight for her - something not right in her life, or at least her golf game.  The story from Jeff Skinner at LinksLifeGolf.com.

-More from LinksLifeGolf.com - Saturday Swing Tip: Deve Pelz 3 foot putting drill.  In brief: put ten balls in a circle around a hole at three feet and putt them till you make ten in a row.  If you have trouble, he goes on to tell you about a couple of putting aids that will tell you if it's your aiming or your stroking that is the problem.  Note his last putt where he says he's going to show you a putt without a wobble.  Dave - are you sure that ball doesn't have a wobble?  (He notes that Phil Mickelson uses this drill but doesn't stop till he makes 100 in a row.)

Thursday Match Play Opening Day

Low net round was shot by Mike Strawn (filling in for Tony Wease) who shot a net 27 on a gross 44.  Low gross for the day was shot by Junior Byron, a 36.  Low net team score was turned in by Pam Byron (47/33) and Anna Mosby (44/29) with a super score of 62.  Hole prizes: Jack Butcher and Junior Byron on the par threes and Dane Mosby with a long putt.  No hole-in-ones on the day though we did have Lakeview's 'ace' on the course - Dave Strange has three of the special shots, all at Lakeview, the last two of them in 2007.  He was subbing for the Bob Elliott team.  A big welcome to league newcomers Anna Mosby, Mike Breeden and Dan Flynn.

Long Time Golfers: Denny Waggoner and Son Greg

Played some golf with the two of them yesterday.  Used to play basketball with Denny years ago.  Son Greg played some baseball with my son Marty at Shoals, also years ago.  Great fun.

Thursday Match Play League Opening Day

The Thursday Match Play League gets underway today at 10am.  Defending champions, all returning to the fray, are Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson in the team competition and Jack Lents in the Individual competition.  Course conditions are near perfect - the spring bugs are still around but have been tolerable the past few days - wouldn't hurt to bring your magic bug-away formula (Absorbine, Jr works for me; vanilla spray also works as does a new product by the name of Buggins - touted by two different golfers at Lakeview).

We are still in need of a sub for the Bob Elliott-Joe Gray team.  Call the clubhouse (295-5678) and let me know that you can come on out and join our merry band this morning.

Note 1:  Women in the league will be teeing off from down in the flat on hole #1 and the par for them will be 4 in league competition, same as for the men.

Note 2: The men will continue to tee off on #9 from the lower level as we did last year.

Come on down, you fearless challengers; the golf gods and goddesses await us.  No doubt they have some surprises for us this year.  I say we surprise them as well with our sterling play and our joyful playing of this great game of golf.

Thursday Match Play League

We start at 10am tomorrow morning.  Have eleven teams signed up as of this minute.  More out there?  We'll find out tomorrow morning.

Tuesday Men's League Opening Day

-Best net round: Noah Callahan who shot a gross 36 and a net 29.  Joe Allen with a gross 37 and a net 31 had the second best net round.

-Best gross round: James Hager's 33 which included birds at the long holes and seven pars.  Kevin Johnson had the second best round, a 34.  Kevin opened with a bogey and found two more at the last two holes that offset an eagle at six and birds at four and five.

-Low net team:  Wayne Souerdike (38/33) and Joe Allen (37/31) fired a nifty 64.  Noah Callahan (36/29) and Derek Gilbertson (39/36) had the next best at 65.

-Hole prizes: Mike Breeden, James Hager and Tom McAtee at the par threes, and Don Nolan and Jordan Divine with long putts.

-Average gross score for the Tuesday Men was 42.41, way down from a year ago when it was 43.61.  Probably has something to do with the nice weather and the course condition. 

-Two subs played the first day:  Derek Gilbertson for Mark Potts and Phil Eyler for Tim Voegerl.  Phil closed with two birds to shoot an even par 35 while Derek shot a 39.

Notes:  Saw plenty of rust out there but also a fair amount of first day jitters - I include myself in that group after a round of 41 which included a double bogey at the first hole and bogeys at the second and third (jeesh...).  Twenty-eight teams are playing this year, down from the thirty-two of a year ago.  Only one team took advantage of the option to play early (Mike Seals and Nick Toy came out Sunday).  No hole-in-ones though Phil Eyler said he came close at #7.

Tuesday Men's League: Opening Day of the 2012 Season

It's here!  Day 1 of the new season.  Defending team champions are Mitch Jeffers and Jordan Divine - they beat out John Walker and Skip Ackerman, and Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins.  Individual champion was Jordan Divine with Dan Jones, Karry Stoll and Skip Ackerman coming in 2nd through fifth.  Continued good weather is expected with highs near 70 today and the course is in excellent condition.  For those who have taken advantage of the winter-that-never-was, seems like we are already at mid-season with our golf swings in shape, the fairways hard and running, and the greens soft and receptive.  Of course, the winds of the last few days have played havoc with the ball direction at times, but then there should be a challenge or two out there for us at every turn.  And there usually is, whether it be a drive trying to avoid a hazard, a pitch trying to find just the right distance, or a putt that is short but downhill and sliding to the right.  That's what make it fun not to mention the competition and the companionship of our fellow golfers.

Hole prize markers are at holes 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 today.  Come on out and lets see if we can get some low scores on the books.  Anybody out there got a hole-in-one up there sleeve today?

Sunday at Lakeview: First Scores of New League Season; Jones-Padgett-Jones-Carrico Photos

-First scores of the new league season were turned in:  Mike Seals shot a 37 and partner Nick Toy a 44 to get the Tuesday Men's League underway.  Will post the roster as of this morning - 26 teams; expect there will be several additions today and tomorrow. 

-Colin Padgett and Mark Jones took on Kim Jones and Don Carrico in a Sunday scramble.  Colin reported the score war around six and seven under (?!). Don and Kim besting Colin and Mark.  Photos:  The two teams finishing up at nine.  Note how the wind is bending the flag pole.

Souerdike and Rayhill Win Rain Splattered Saturday Morning Scramble

Wayne Souerdike and Tracy Rayhill teamed up to fire a nifty 31 and win the Saturday Morning Scramble this morning.  Playing under cloudy skies that occasionally opened up to release some of those 'April-showers-bring-May-flowers' rains, the twosome birdied one, two, four, five and six to go along with a single bogey at three and pars on the last three holes.  They beat back the efforts of Stan Graber and Noah Callahan, who had birdies at two, four and seven to go along with six pars, and Mike Bird, Joe Allen and Kevin Byron who managed birds at seven and nine and seven pars, to finish with scores of 32 and 33.

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 9 this morning, weather permitting - the rain in the area looks like it is going to pass west and north of us.

-Two of our seniors are under the weather at the moment:  Joe Gray is having heart problems while Jack Lents is having knee problems.  Want each of them to mend quickly and get back to the business of golf and the active life sooner rather than later.  A third one, Dick Barber, is having issues with arthritis in his shoulders.

-Pretty good two person scramble score turned in by Mark Potts and Noah Callahan yesterday afternoon:

That translates into a net of 24.33.  It also gives the two of them a gross 58 for the 18 holes and a net 52.67.  Pretty damn good round of golf.  Of course, inquiring minds want to know what happened at hole #9?  A par after eight birdies?  And what about eagle opportunities at holes 2, 4 and 6?  Good stuff by Mark and Noah.  Note that Tracy Rayhill and Greg Potts kept up with the youngsters through two holes when a bogey at three derailed them.  Still a respectable 34 for the nine holes, a net 31.

Bits and Pieces

-Mike Seals and Nathan were out playing last night.  Mike was surprised by the bugs - which I haven't mentioned here in the blog - me bad - don't like to think of them any more than I have to.  They, the bugs, are around and you will want to bring whatever deterrent works best for you - vanilla, absorbine, jr., dryer sheets.  The wind and the cooler weather knocked them down for a day or two earlier this week bu they came back.  Birds are busy propagating to take care of the problem.

-Saturday Morning Scramble at 9am tomorrow.

-Preseason scramble 2 still going on - till tomorrow night.  League play starts up Sunday for those Tuesday League members who want to play early - they have the option of getting in their Tuesday round on Sunday or Monday this year.  Thursday Match Play starts at 10am next Thursday.

-Change in the Thursday Match Play gathering tomorrow: 12 noon (not 10am) when the sun is higher in the sky and the temperatures in the 60's.  We'll have a Thursday Noon Scramble to go along with the second preseason scramble for those who want to participate at that time.

-Several teams came out and experienced Texas style golfing yesterday at Lakeview.  The wind was up for almost the entire day and creating havoc all over the place.  Best score posted was by Short Jeffers and Jack Divine with a sterling 33.  It was also the only one under par - the Kevin Johnson/Matt Jeffers team along with the James Hager/Ryan Johnson team were one under coming into nine but both finished with a gol dern bogey to finish at even par.  Five teams took part in the Tuesday Afternoon Scramble.

Tuesday Afternoon Scramble

Tuesday Afternoon Scramble:  We'll do the same thing we did last week:  Tuesday Men's League players can play their preseason scramble (no entry fee - included in league fees) and at the same time play the TAS ($5 entry fee).  Each will be a handicapped game.  Winners of the TAS last week (paid two places) were Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins (1st place) and Short Jeffers and Jack Divine (2nd place). 

Bits and Pieces

-The Masters:  Who would have thought that Woods and McIlroy would have been all square with each other at five over par at the end, and tied for a miserable 40th place.  And who would have thought that Phil Mickelson would have two, yes, two, triple bogeys during the tournament, the real killer being the one on Sunday at hole #4.  Give him bogeys on those two rather than triple bogeys and he wins by two.  Who would have thought that TW would have his worst Masters ever after playing so well down at Arnie's place just two weeks ago.  Bubba Watson winning?  That's not really a surprise - he definitely was in the mix and the chatter before it all started down there in Augusta Thursday morning.  Good theater, especially Sunday afternoon where we got to see another four birdie run down the stretch by the winner (#13 thru #16) as well as a dramatic and gutsy shot from the pines to set up the easy two putt for par and the win on the second extra hole.  More good reading from espn.com's Gene Wohiechowski here.

-Shot of the tournament:  Bubba's hooking gap wedge from the pines to get on the green some 135 yards away on the second playoff hole.  Oosthuizen's double eagle on the 2nd hole earlier in the day was a thing of beauty and indeed rare but....

-Pretty nice payday for Bubba and 2nd place finisher, Louis Oosthuizen at $1,440,000 and $864,000.  Note to Lakeview scramblers:  You think maybe we're playing in the wrong city?

-The preseason scrambles continue for Lakeview Leaguers.  Tuesday Men and Thursday Match Play golfers have the chance to play and win this week's version.  Those who played last week have the chance to win this week and also the 18 hole prize.  Congrats to Week 1 winners, Mark Potts and Noah Callahan, as well as Junior Byron and Kevin Byron.  Also congrats to last Tuesday's TAS (Tuesday Afternoon Scramble) winners, Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins.

-More good golf weather today with temps near 70.  Anybody got a hole-in-one up their sleeve today?

-Of note:  I tried to hit Dick Lemmon's new driver last Saturday (a left handed model, seeing he bats from the other side of the plate).  Had Karry Stoll standing there saying I wasn't gonna hit it (thanks, Karry...) and JD Simmons standing there saying 'I bet he does' (thanks, JD).  Missed completely on the first two swings and then tagged it just barely on the third - got a weak roller to the first baseman.  Did spend some of my Sunday morning working on hitting irons from the 'wrong' side - a 5 iron, a pitching wedge.  Wouldn't say I'm proficient though was making contact regularly.

Mixed League Preseason Scramble Week 1 Results

Congratulations to the winners,the Mark Potts/Noah Callahan and the Junior Byron/Kevin Byron team, each with a net score of 28.33.  The two teams also had the two low gross scores of the week.  The second preseason scramble for the Tuesday Men's League and the Thursday Match Play League starts today and runs through next Saturday.  Note:  A preseason scramble score for the Byron/Byron team was mistakenly posted last Wednesday; the two played in the Tuesday Afternoon Scramble then but not in the preseason scramble.  My bad.
