We start at 9am tomorrow, weather permitting.

Tuesday Men and more

Traffic congestion just about six pm as leaguers come in after finishing their rounds, late leaguers just starting their rounds, and non leaguers stepping to the side and waiting to get on with their rounds.

Joe Allen, Tracy Rayhill, Greg Potts and I (subbing for James Hager) went out a little later. Not so congested here as we go up number four.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Looks like another absolutely beautiful day is in store for our area. The course has dried out and drained substantially from the rains of last week (I know, getting ready for the rains of this week). The greens are back to their former selves - the greensmower returned to the fold last Friday after a change of the fuel injectors. You shouldn't have to be as aggressive with your putting today; still want to get your ball to the hole though. The surrounds are still devilishly high - good way to avoid them is to get those GIR's - you know, do like Darren Clark says: fairways, greens and make a putt every now and then. Otherwise, get out your wedge and pop your ball onto the green - come down on the ball, make solid contact, and, of course, apply just the right touch. Sounds simple but isn't. Do want you to know that there have been suggestions on how to eliminate 80% to 90% of greenside problems? About a year ago, on a slow mid week day with not all that many people on the golf course, Ken Graehler came up to me after playing his round and said - Mike, I got a suggestion for you on speeding play - double the width of your collars (the seven foot area adjacent to the green). Of course, I knew right off what he was talking about - get rid of some of that long, grabby grass in the surrounds. And he's right but that would also reduce the opportunities for players to show their expertise with their wedges and their touch. Personally I think we need to make some of the greensides even more challenging, especailly around the easily reached holes like number two and number four. In any case, today we have much drier conditions, some sun and some warmth, and faster greens. Should be fun.

A little history: ten years ago, Jack Cook was the leader in the Individual competition with Gary Burris and Don Nolan nipping at his heels. Scott Hickman had the low gross with a 35 while Skip Ackerman had the low net with a 32.

Our leaders today: Terry Butcher and Jeff Doyle (he was out yesterday for a little practice wanting to improve by a bunch on his shanky performance of a week ago) in Team competition and Tony Wease in the Inidvidual competition. Should see some better scores today - most of the rust of winter should be gone and conditions are favorable. Come on down, guys, and enjoy the day and the golf.

Potts, Johnson and Wininger are Winners

Mark Potts, Curt Johnson and Lee Wininger came in with a score of 30 in the Saturday Scramble at Lakeview. That was just enough to take the trophy over three other teams, each of whom came in at 31.

Thursday Senior League

Fighting fog and the distinct possibility of rain, the Seniors came out and braved the elements last Thursday and were rewarded with a morning which turned out to be nearly perfect. At the end of play, Rex Hudson and Jack Butcher had taken over first place in the Team competition. They have a mere half-point lead over three teams tied for second in this young season. Rex also vaulted to the top of the Individual competition with a net round of 32 for the day. Dave Strange had the low net round with a 31, while Al Kavanaugh had the low gross round with a 38. Low net team score was turned in by the team of Dave Strange and Clyde Wake with a 65. Sharpshooters for the event were Rex Hudson and Dave Brown for long putts, and Richard Swayze and Pam Byron for close to the pin. The Seniors voted for a 9am start time for the season, effective immediately.

Tuesday Men's League

Terry Butcher and Jeff Doyle continue to lead the Team competition in the Tuesday Men's League by a scant two points, with Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz coming on strong with a net team score of 66 for the day. Low net team score went to Junior Byron and Kevin Byron who came in with a nifty 64. In Individual competition, Tony Wease sits on top with a 39 point advantage over last week's top dog, Bric Parker. Low net score for the day was 31, which was attained by both Kevin Byron and Mike Kidwell. Low gross score went to Phil Eyler who shot a splendid 34. Sharpshooters for event 4 were Terry Padgett, Sandy Winter and Phil Eyler for long putts, and Short Jeffers, Ed Green and Terry Butcher for close to the pin shots. There were fourteen birdies for the day, three claimed by Phil Eyler and two each by Josh Butcher and Short Jeffers. Leading in pars was Mike Kidwell with eight; Terry Butcher came in with a total of seven.

Community League

Reminder: The Lakeview Community League, our summer league, gets underway starting play with the week of May 24th. This league is a two-person handicap league playing nine holes once a week through the week of August 9th. Participants have the option of playing their rounds anytime during the week, Sunday through Saturday. Contact the clubhouse at 295-5678 to register your team for play.
