Mark Potts and Noah Callahan were the big winners of the preseason scrambles, earning a tie for week one and then dominating week 2 and the 18 hole total.  The results:

Souerdike and Rayhill Win Rain Splattered Saturday Morning Scramble

Wayne Souerdike and Tracy Rayhill teamed up to fire a nifty 31 and win the Saturday Morning Scramble this morning.  Playing under cloudy skies that occasionally opened up to release some of those 'April-showers-bring-May-flowers' rains, the twosome birdied one, two, four, five and six to go along with a single bogey at three and pars on the last three holes.  They beat back the efforts of Stan Graber and Noah Callahan, who had birdies at two, four and seven to go along with six pars, and Mike Bird, Joe Allen and Kevin Byron who managed birds at seven and nine and seven pars, to finish with scores of 32 and 33.

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 9 this morning, weather permitting - the rain in the area looks like it is going to pass west and north of us.

-Two of our seniors are under the weather at the moment:  Joe Gray is having heart problems while Jack Lents is having knee problems.  Want each of them to mend quickly and get back to the business of golf and the active life sooner rather than later.  A third one, Dick Barber, is having issues with arthritis in his shoulders.

-Pretty good two person scramble score turned in by Mark Potts and Noah Callahan yesterday afternoon:

That translates into a net of 24.33.  It also gives the two of them a gross 58 for the 18 holes and a net 52.67.  Pretty damn good round of golf.  Of course, inquiring minds want to know what happened at hole #9?  A par after eight birdies?  And what about eagle opportunities at holes 2, 4 and 6?  Good stuff by Mark and Noah.  Note that Tracy Rayhill and Greg Potts kept up with the youngsters through two holes when a bogey at three derailed them.  Still a respectable 34 for the nine holes, a net 31.

Bits and Pieces

-Mike Seals and Nathan were out playing last night.  Mike was surprised by the bugs - which I haven't mentioned here in the blog - me bad - don't like to think of them any more than I have to.  They, the bugs, are around and you will want to bring whatever deterrent works best for you - vanilla, absorbine, jr., dryer sheets.  The wind and the cooler weather knocked them down for a day or two earlier this week bu they came back.  Birds are busy propagating to take care of the problem.

-Saturday Morning Scramble at 9am tomorrow.

-Preseason scramble 2 still going on - till tomorrow night.  League play starts up Sunday for those Tuesday League members who want to play early - they have the option of getting in their Tuesday round on Sunday or Monday this year.  Thursday Match Play starts at 10am next Thursday.

Bits and Pieces

-Change in the Thursday Match Play gathering tomorrow: 12 noon (not 10am) when the sun is higher in the sky and the temperatures in the 60's.  We'll have a Thursday Noon Scramble to go along with the second preseason scramble for those who want to participate at that time.

-Several teams came out and experienced Texas style golfing yesterday at Lakeview.  The wind was up for almost the entire day and creating havoc all over the place.  Best score posted was by Short Jeffers and Jack Divine with a sterling 33.  It was also the only one under par - the Kevin Johnson/Matt Jeffers team along with the James Hager/Ryan Johnson team were one under coming into nine but both finished with a gol dern bogey to finish at even par.  Five teams took part in the Tuesday Afternoon Scramble.

Tuesday Afternoon Scramble

Tuesday Afternoon Scramble:  We'll do the same thing we did last week:  Tuesday Men's League players can play their preseason scramble (no entry fee - included in league fees) and at the same time play the TAS ($5 entry fee).  Each will be a handicapped game.  Winners of the TAS last week (paid two places) were Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins (1st place) and Short Jeffers and Jack Divine (2nd place). 

Bits and Pieces

-The Masters:  Who would have thought that Woods and McIlroy would have been all square with each other at five over par at the end, and tied for a miserable 40th place.  And who would have thought that Phil Mickelson would have two, yes, two, triple bogeys during the tournament, the real killer being the one on Sunday at hole #4.  Give him bogeys on those two rather than triple bogeys and he wins by two.  Who would have thought that TW would have his worst Masters ever after playing so well down at Arnie's place just two weeks ago.  Bubba Watson winning?  That's not really a surprise - he definitely was in the mix and the chatter before it all started down there in Augusta Thursday morning.  Good theater, especially Sunday afternoon where we got to see another four birdie run down the stretch by the winner (#13 thru #16) as well as a dramatic and gutsy shot from the pines to set up the easy two putt for par and the win on the second extra hole.  More good reading from espn.com's Gene Wohiechowski here.

-Shot of the tournament:  Bubba's hooking gap wedge from the pines to get on the green some 135 yards away on the second playoff hole.  Oosthuizen's double eagle on the 2nd hole earlier in the day was a thing of beauty and indeed rare but....

-Pretty nice payday for Bubba and 2nd place finisher, Louis Oosthuizen at $1,440,000 and $864,000.  Note to Lakeview scramblers:  You think maybe we're playing in the wrong city?

-The preseason scrambles continue for Lakeview Leaguers.  Tuesday Men and Thursday Match Play golfers have the chance to play and win this week's version.  Those who played last week have the chance to win this week and also the 18 hole prize.  Congrats to Week 1 winners, Mark Potts and Noah Callahan, as well as Junior Byron and Kevin Byron.  Also congrats to last Tuesday's TAS (Tuesday Afternoon Scramble) winners, Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins.

-More good golf weather today with temps near 70.  Anybody got a hole-in-one up their sleeve today?

-Of note:  I tried to hit Dick Lemmon's new driver last Saturday (a left handed model, seeing he bats from the other side of the plate).  Had Karry Stoll standing there saying I wasn't gonna hit it (thanks, Karry...) and JD Simmons standing there saying 'I bet he does' (thanks, JD).  Missed completely on the first two swings and then tagged it just barely on the third - got a weak roller to the first baseman.  Did spend some of my Sunday morning working on hitting irons from the 'wrong' side - a 5 iron, a pitching wedge.  Wouldn't say I'm proficient though was making contact regularly.
