Bits and Pieces: Girls Basketball

-Girls Sectional at Barr-Reeve:  North Daviess Cougars beat the Washington Catholic Cardinals, 28-19; and the Vincennes Rivet Patriots beat the Shoals Jug Rox, 67-42.  No surprises in the end scores though was surprised at the inability of the teams in the ND-WC game to put the ball in the hoop: score was 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, 10-4 at the end of the half.  Heated up some in the second half but not much.  The second game, by contrast, started fast and amazingly even with both teams being perfect from the field through the first several shots - Michaela Brockman for Shoals was particularly effective (and brilliant), scoring 11 of her game high 24 points in the quarter.  Though the Shoals team played their hearts out, the Patriots were way too much for them, having stellar athletes something like ten deep.  The state champs are definitely a class act.  Btw, it was good to see the Shoals team out there looking like a team with places to go.  They lose both Brockman and the older of Kevin Harder's two daughters, Rachel, but come back next year with a bunch of girls who look like they know what they are doing and want to do it.

Friday matches are set now with the Cougars facing the Lions of Loogootee in the first game at 6 and the Patriots taking on the Vikings on their home court in the second game around 7:30 (imagine the house will be packed, something it definitely was not last night).  Expect the Lions to do very well against the Cougars and the the Patriots to avenge one of their three loses in the second game in a barn burner.  Should be fun.
