Nick Wininger, Tyler Kidwell, Lee Wininger and George Templin found seven birdies to go along with two pars to fire a 28 at Lakeview to win the Saturday morning scramble. The foursome bested two teams tied at 29: Dave Wininger, Mike Bird and Joe Allen, along with Short Jeffers, Greg Potts, Steven Qualkenbush and Kevin Byron. Two other teams participated and came in at 30.

Sharon and Ken Frye Take Community League Match Play Trophy

Sharon and Ken Frye went out and played like and with a couple of youngsters this evening, and then came in a few hours later as champions. The Loogootee couple bested Adam Wagler and Tyson Stoll in Lakeview's Community League July Match Play Tournament. Needing a win on the last hole to tie and extend the match, Wagler and Stoll did their part by getting pars. But the Fryes did one better, Ken rolling in a par putt just after Sharon had rolled in a birdie putt of her own. The close match was tied through four holes before the Fryes took the lead for good at #5. The next three holes were halved setting up the dramatic conclusion at the ninth hole.

Notes on Thursday Match Play League

Charlie Sheetz and Tony Wease along with Richard Lemmon and Leroy Streepy head to the final round of the Match Play Tournament next Thursday after impressive wins yesterday.  Sheetz and sub Mike Strawn shot a net 64 and easily beat the one man short team of Joe Gray and Vic Wallace, 11 to 3.  Lemmon and Streepy did one better, firing a net score of 63, in throttling Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron, 12 to 2.  In regular season action, Ray Shaw tied Ken Hudson for the low net round of the day, each carding scores of 29.  Mike Bird turned in the low gross score with a one under par 34 while the above mentioned team of Richard Lemmon and Leroy Streepy got the low team net with their 63.  Hole prizes were claimed by Wayne Pearl with a long putt at #8, and by Mike Bird and Rex Hudson with close to the pin shots at #7 and #9.   With two weeks to go in team competition, Frank and Susan Fee and Jim and Wilma Bateman cling to the top two spots in the standings.  The Fees, on the short end of their match with Jack Lents and Mike Bird, 10.5 to 3.5, lead the Batemans by a scant two and a half points. The Batemans bested the team of Al Kavanaugh and Mike Anderson by a score of 9 to 5.  Lents and Bird are in third place eighteen points from the top with Pearl and Byron twenty points out of the lead.  In individual competition, with six weeks remaining in the season, John Chapman saw his lead narrowed to four points over second place Mike Bird.  Dave Brown, Jim Bateman and Jack Lents stand thirty plus points behind the leaders in third through fifth positions in the standings.  Complete standings, results and next week's pairings here.

Mike Anderson's East-West Challenge

Mike Anderson has announced the scheduling of the East-West Challenge, the battle between the largely Country Oaks players vs the largely Lakeview players that has been going on for several years now.  The details:

EAST vs. WEST CHALLENGE 2010

14 September at Country Oaks (changed from LAKEVIEW 9-11-10)

Nine Holes Best Ball of Two
Nine Holes 2 Man Scramble

21 September at Lakeview (changed from COUNTRY OAKS 9-11-10)

Nine Holes Two Ball (both count)
Nine Holes Alternating Shot

ALL scores are gross.  Match play per hole. One (1) point available per nine holes, must win 5 holes.  Played as twosome.
An addition one point for each nine hole game will be awarded to the team with the low score.
For the alternate shot game, teams will select who will tee off at the first hole and play alternating shot from there through the ninth hole.

Tee time will be 9:00am.

Hopefully all players can play both days.

Thursday Match Play League - Results

Results of this morning's play are posted here.

Thursday Match Players - Come on Down!

Fourth week of the Match Play Tournament.  Current leaders at 3 points each are Terry LaMar and Clyde Wake on one hand and Joe Gray and Vic Wallace on the other.  What happens after today's play:

-Top two teams in points advance to championship match.
-If more than two teams have the same number of points, then a tiebreaker will be used.  Tiebreaker:  Low net score for the latest event.  If still tied, low net score for the previous event, and so on.

Four teams sit at 2 points and are probably hoping one or both of the leaders stumble so that the tiebreaker can go into effect.  The four: The Course team, Wease and Sheetz, Shaw and Brown, and Lents and Bird.

In any case, come on down.  Bring your A game and let's see if someone can get a hole-in-one out there today.  We've had a couple in the last few weeks - Curt Johnson playing in the Saturday Scramble, and Scott Schutte playing in the Community League.

Notes on Tuesday Men's League Play

In the semi finals of the Match Play Tournament, Mike Albertson and Mark Jones fell behind for the first time on the eighth hole in a see-saw battle with Mark Sherer and Mike Bird.  They tied it at the ninth when Jones rolled in a six foot par putt and Mark Sherer's four footer for the win lipped out.  The extra hole, an ugly affair with both sides seeing errant shots galore, was finally settled with Jones sinking a bogey putt of five feet and Albertson's double bogey putt being conceded.  The winners go on to face Doug Denson and Buck Holland who had a slightly easier time of it, closing out Tom McAtee and John Drake at the eighth hole.  Their match was tied through five but then Denson and Holland won the next three holes to advance.  The two winners face off for the championship next Tuesday.

In regular season action:  Tom Trambaugh, an extended sub for the still recovering Ward Smith, found his first birdie at hole number five and went on to fire the day's low net, a 27, on the strength of a gross 47.  Short Jeffers and Mike Seals fired 34's to tie for the day's low gross.  Jeffers, two over through three, found three birdies and three pars on his final six holes to get his 34 while Mike Seals rolled in eight pars to go along with his single birdie at #4.  Two of the Kidwell brothers, Tyler and Trenton, playing in separate groups, found consecutive birdies at holes four, five and six in even par rounds of 35.  Four different teams shared the low team score of 62: Greg Potts and Tracy Rayhill, Virgil Harper and Terry LaMar, Allan Harmon and Rob Rollins, and Short Jeffers and Jack Divine.  Hole prize winners were Jack Divine, Greg Potts and Chris Bledsoe on the par threes, and Charlie Lyon, Rob Rollins and Short Jeffers on the long putts.  At the end of the day, Allan Harmon and Rob Rollins sit at the top of the team standings with a very slim five point lead over second placers Curt Johnson and Bric Parker, and a seven point lead over last week's top team, Kent Summers and Paul Hart.  Paul Hart does retain his top spot in the individual competition, expanding his lead to 44 points over second place Mark Jones and 54 points over the surging Rob Rollins.  Of note:  Mike Seals has been playing well over the past several weeks, so well that he now has become a member of the zero handicap group, a very select group with only two members at the moment (he joins Mark Potts).  Coming up on August 3rd: the first week of the four week Individual Flighted Tournament.

Tuesday Men's League Results

Results of today's play are posted here.  Congratulations to the Denson/Holland team and the Albertson/Jones team for their wins today in the Match Play Tournament semi finals.  The two teams will square off in head-to-head competition next week for the championship.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

The weather man is calling for stormy weather today so be aware of the possibility.  Hot weather brings pop up storms.  But for the most part, expect ideal golfing conditions, or at least as ideal as we are going to get for the time being.

Today the Match Play Tournament has its semi finals with John Drake and Tom McAtee taking on Doug Denson and Buck Holland at 4 this afternoon.  Mark Sherer and I expect to go out against Mike Albertson and Mark Jones around 2:30.  Winners meet in the championship next week.  Two notes on play: If tied through nine holes, continue playing till match is decided.  And, for the match play, the twice par pick up rule we employ in league play is not in effect - if the hole is still not decided at twice par, continue play till ball is in the hole.

Other notes: Bring your A game.  Have fun.

Lakeview Golf Course News
by Michael Bird, Lakeview Golf Course Manager

Tuesday Men's League

In the Match Play Tournament, all four matches were close with the Mike Albertson/Mark Jones vs. Tony Wease/Charlie Sheetz being the closest.  They finished tied at 4.5 points each.  The tiebreaker, low net score for the team, gave the match to Albertson and Jones who shot a 70 against the 71 that Charlie and Tony carded.  Mark Jones chipped in for birdie at #9, a shot that didn't win them the hole but it did get them to the net 70 that won them the match.  Charlie Sheetz also birdied the hole which won the hole for them and sent the match to the tiebreaker.  In the Mark Sherer/Mike Bird match with Bryant Trambaugh and Wayne Arvin, it took a four foot bogey putt that slipped in on the right side of the cup at the last hole to secure the win for the Sherer/Bird team in a 5 to 4 match.  Bryant Trambaugh, with the exception of a triple bogey at #5, had an exceptional round of 39 which included a birdie and a hole prize at #3.  Doug Denson's two birdie start and a even par round of 35 led the Denson and Holland team to a 5 to 4 win over Paul Hart and Kent Summers.  In the fourth match of the day, John Drake and Tom McAtee won the 8th hole and tied the 9th to break a tie with Curt Johnson and Bric Parker and win their match by a score of 5 to 4.  The semifinals next Tuesday will have Albertson and Jones going out against Sherer and Bird, and Denson and Holland taking on McAtee and Drake in head-to-head competition.

In regular season action: George Templin and Don Nolan came in with the low net scores of the day at 31 and that also gave them the low net team score at 62.  Three players carded 35's to tie for the low gross of the day - Doug Denson, Mike Kidwell and Mark Potts.  Hole prizes were claimed by Bryant Trambaugh, Phil Eyler and Charlie Lyon at the par threes, and by Kent Summers, Chris Taylor and Charlie Lyon on the long putts.  Kent Summers and Paul Hart stayed at the top of the team competition standings with Curt Johnson and Bric Parker sitting in second.  Paul Hart leads the individual competition with Mark Jones, Tom McAtee, Bric Parker and Rob Rollins, and a host of others, giving chase.  Of note: Doug Denson did it for the second time - found birds at holes one and two and got himself a complimentary cart card.  He's the only one who has been able to birdie the first two holes during league play so far this year.

Thursday Match Play League

Vic Wallace and Joe Gray along with Clyde Wake and Terry LaMar remain undefeated in the Thursday Match Play July Match Tournament.  The two teams are 3 and 0 in their matches and are one week away from playing for the championship.  Four teams sit at 2 and 0, ready to take the place of one of the leading teams should they falter.  The four teams: Ray Shaw and Dave Brown, Mike Bird and Jack Lents, Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz, and the Course team, this week filled by Richard Lemmon and Leroy Streepy.

In Thursday's play, low scores for the day were turned in by Dave Brown with a nifty net 28 on a gross 38, Wayne Souerdike's gross 36 and a net 30, and three teams tying for the low net team score at 67 - Mike Bird and Jack Lents, Dick Barber and John Chapman, and Wayne Souerdike and Charlie Sheetz.  Hole prizes were claimed by Susan Fee at #7, Wayne Souerdike at #8 and Mike Bird at #9.  With three weeks to go in the team competition for the regular season, Susan and Frank Fee hold on to an eight point lead over Jim and Wilma Bateman with Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron nineteen points back, and Mike Bird and Jack Lents sitting in fourth twenty-five points from the top.  In individual competition, the guy at the top, John Chapman went head-to-head with his nearest competition, Mike Bird, and increased his lead from eleven points to eighteen points.  Dave Brown moved up the rankings on the strength of his 54 point day and sits in third place, twenty-three points behind the leader.  For the day, the group average score was 46.29, well above the year's low of 44.93 of two weeks ago.  Very wet grounds contributed to the additional strokes taken during play.

Community League

Adam Wagler and Tyson Stoll dispatched Ricky Graber and Tyler Graber in the Community League's Match Play Tournament last Thursday evening to head to the championship round.  The winning twosome closed out the Grabers at hole #7 when Ricky Graber missed a birdie putt that would have extended the match.  The winners will join Ken and Sharon Frye, who sent Dale Yoder and Allen Yoder to the sidelines twenty-four hours earlier, in a game that wasn't settled till the ninth hole.

In regular season action, low scores for the week were posted by Perry Yoder with a net 28, by Short Jeffers and Mike Bird with gross 34's, and by the team of Jack Lents and Virgil Harper with a net of 63.  Dale and Allen Yoder, in spite of the defeat in the Match Play Tournament, continue to top the standings in team competition, holding a narrow four point lead over Shirley and Short Jeffers.  No change at the top in the individual standings as well as Allen Yoder leads Gary LaMar by 27.  Gary vaulted into second place with a 56 point week on the strength of a scorecard with a 39 gross and a 29 net,  Tyson Stoll, Shirley Jeffers, Virgil Harper and Eric Bird round out the top six in the standings.

Scott Schutte Aces #3 at Lakeview

Scott Schutte aced #3 out at Lakeview Golf Course on Thursday, July 22nd, as he was playing his Community League round.  It is the first for Scott and the second of the week at Lakeview where Curt Johnson also got his first ace the previous Saturday.

Notes on Tuesday Men's League Play

-Doug Denson did it for the second time - found birds at holes one and two and got himself one of Diane's complimentary cart cards.  He's the only one who has been able to birdie the first two holes during league play so far this year.

-In the Match Play Tournament, all four matches were close with the Mike Albertson/Mark Jones vs. Tony Wease/Charlie Sheetz being the closest.  They finished tied at 4.5 points each.  The tiebreaker, low net score for the team, gave the match to Albertson and Jones who shot a 70 against the 71 that Charlie and Tony carded.  I happened to be at hole #2 when the group on #9 whopped - Mark Jones had just chipped one in for birdie - it didn't win them the hole but it did get them to the net 70 that won them the match.  Charlie Sheetz also birdied the hole which won the hole for them and sent the match to the tiebreaker.

In the Mark Sherer/Mike Bird match with Bryant Tambaugh and Wayne Arvin, it took a four foot bogey putt that slipped in on the right side of the cup at the last hole to secure the win for the Sherer/Bird team in a 5 to 4 match.  Bryant Trambaugh, with the exception of a triple bogey at #5, had an exceptional round of 39 which included a birdie and a hole prize at #3.

Doug Denson's two birdie start and a even par round of 35 lead the Denson and Holland team to a 5 to 4 win over Paul Hart and Kent Summers.

No tiebreaker at this stage: if tied after nine holes, teams keep playing till a winner is decided.  Another note: no twice par pick ups if it decides a hole one way or the other - play till ball is in the hole.

In regular season action: George Templin and Don Nolan came in with the low net scores of the day at 31 and that also gave them the low net team score at 62.  Three players carded 35's to tie for the low gross of the day - Doug Denson, Mike Kidwell and Mark Potts.  Hole prizes were claimed by Bryant Trambaugh, Phil Eyler and Charlie Lyon at the par threes, and by Kent Summers, Chris Taylor and Charlie Lyon (a second!) on the long putts. Complete results and standings here.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Looks like the weather is going to be a little rough around the edges today.  According to the hour by hour forecast, this morning would be the best time to get your round in.  As for the rest of the day, chance of storms.  Can't do much about that except be ready for them and take action as necessary.  As for now, the game is on - come on out and play.  Week three of the Match Play Tournament with eight teams still in the mix - go here for the bracket.  Mark Sherer and I are one of the elite eight and are scheduled to go out with out opponents, Bryant Trambaugh and Mike Breeden at 4:30 this afternoon.  Head-to-head.  Fun time.  Strongly suggest you do the same if you're still in the mix.

Will watch the weather...

Curt Johnson Aces #7 at Lakeview for His First Hole-in-One

Curt Johnson, playing in the Saturday Morning Scramble out at Lakeview on July 17th, hit his King Cobra SSI eight iron just short of 115 yards at the 7th hole. Initially upset at his stroke, which caught the ball a bit heavy, his demeanor changed dramatically as the ball hit fifteen inches from the hole, bounced just beyond the stick, and then reversed itself and dropped into the hole. The ace, a first for Curt, came on his second shot from the tee box as the team was a player shy in the four person scramble. Abe Knepp and Mike Bird shared in the wonder and joy of Curt's magical shot. In spite of Curt's heroics, the team came in one shot shy of the winning score of six under.

Mike Kidwell, Greg Potts, Joe Allen and Kevin Byron shot a seven under par at Lakeview last Saturday to nip two other teams and win the Saturday Scramble at Lakeview. The foursome had birdies at all the holes with the exception of #3 and #9 where they had pars. At the Golf Course on a Friday Afternoon

Shirley Jeffers with San Diego friends, Ericka and Gail Myers.  Golfing babes (the ones on the right and the left) and golf goddess (the one in the middle).  Photos by grandson Lucas who just happened to have some time on his hands while Shirley, Gail and Ericka were on the course.  I confess to giving him a quick lesson on the workings of my camera with its telephoto lens...  (He did good, don't you think?)
