Thursday League Results

This morning's league results are posted here.

Summerfest Scramble Update

Mike Arvin reports that he has eight teams signed up for the Summerfest Scramble coming up on Sunday, the 10th of June.  You can sign up by calling Mike (295-3429) or Dave Wininger (295-4282) or the clubhouse (295-5678).  Individuals welcome.

Bits and Pieces: Thursday Match Play, Tip for the Day, Hodges and Arvin Join Community League

-Thursday Match Play League at 9 this morning, way out in front of any rain we might get later this afternoon and evening (blessed rain).  The team leaders, Ken Hudson and Junior Byron, are up against Ed Summers and Dane Mosby (think he's getting a sub).  Second place team, Jack Butcher (think he's getting a sub as well) and Rex Hudson take on Jack Lents and Mike Bird (that would be me, still).  Don't forget this is week one of four of the Individual Handicapped Tournament.  Expect we'll need subs for the open teams so come on out and play.

-Tip for the day:  Line up your putt, note a point an inch or two or four in front of the putt and then hit your ball through that point; keep your head down, of course.

-A ninth team signed up for the Community League:  League newcomer Stan Hodges has paired up with old timer Mike Arvin and got underway last night; they will be up to speed by the end of the week.  Photo: Stan Hodges using #7 tee box as a platform for his approach to #6 green:

Bits and Pieces

-Thursday Match Play League tomorrow still needing subs - our two open teams remain open though Dave Strange has done a consistently super job of filling the Elliott/Gray team and finds himself sitting on top of the individual standings.  Expect he will be out there again tomorrow morning.  Come on out if you have a hankering to play a good game of golf with some good guys and gals.  The Home/Home team is going out against the new guys on the block, Mike Breeden and Dan Flynn; the Eliott/Gray (Dave Strange) team is up against the Virgil Harper/Terry LaMar team.

-Mike Arvin got the only eagle in this week's Tuesday Men's League.  It was a year ago yesterday that Mark Potts shot a round of thirty, one that included three eagles.  That would be three eagles in nine holes on one day by one guy.  Pretty amazing stuff, even more amazing when you consider the dearth of eagles so far this year - three or four over the first seven weeks.  Let's do the math: 7 weeks, 56 guys, nine holes, four eagles.  That's 392 nine hole rounds of golf and four eagles under almost ideal conditions.  That's about one in a hundred.  Wowzer.

-Twenty-three rounds under forty yesterday with an average of 40.98 for the Tuesday Men (41 of 53 rounds were net par or better).  Had several golfers say they could easily have been three, four or even five shots better with a turn here, a turn there.  Guess the course was playing easy.  Or maybe it was that Memorial Day had come and gone and we all can get serious about golf now.  Don't know for sure what it is.

-See that Curt Johnson got the #7 hole prize yesterday and witnessed him knocking one close on #9.  He managed to beat me there at #7, getting mucho payback on a couple of quarter flags he lost during a flags and skins match with Tracy Rayhill and me on Monday evening.  Nice, Curt.  ...Rascal.

Tuesday Men's League Results

Today's league results are posted here.

League Notes

-One more team joined the Community League: Jonathan Kemp and brother Jeremiah took advantage of the opportunity to catch up with week one and played their week two event.  That makes a total of eight teams in the Community League.

-League round of the week turned in by Mark Potts of the Tuesday League with a 34 followed by Mike Bird's 35 in the Thursday League and then Danny Jones (Tuesday Men) with a 36 (expect we'll get back to the more normal 33, 34 and 35 this week).  Larry Sutton's 29 was the net low for the week with Danny Jones coming in second with a 30.  Low team score for the week: Larry Sutton and Brent Courter's very nifty 61 on Tuesday.

-First tournament champions of the year are crowned with Larry Sutton and Brent Courter shooting the aforementioned 61 to overtake the Tuesday Men Team Handicapped Tournament leaders and win by a stroke in the final day of competition.  They finished at -13 with Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling finishing second at -12.  In the Thursday Tournament, Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz cruised to a nine stroke win with the team of Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson tying the Home/Home team for second place at +1.

-This week starts the second tournament of the year, the four week, 36 hole Individual Handicapped event.

-Two eagles last week:  Tuesday Men Rob Sterling on #8 and Short Jeffers on #6.  (Have already had one this week - Mike Arvin, playing early, popped one in from the other side of the sandtrap at hole #2 last night.)

-It's raining out here on the hill - just started.  Hurray - hope it stays for an hour.

-Super sub Dave Strange, carrying the load for the Elliott team on Thursday, is the current leader in the individual competition in the Thursday League.  He leads Charlie Sheetz by a slim five points.  Jack Divine leads the guys in the Tuesday Men's league, topping second placer Mike Arvin by 31 points.  Chris Jones has taken the early lead in the Community League; he leads newcomer JD Simmons by four points.

-Tuesday Men play today after the hot Memorial Day weekend.  Weather is breaking though, with rain, blessed rain, this morning and then clearing and getting hot again this afternoon.  Course is dry and browning - Eric's been socking the water to the greens and the tee boxes, keeping them green.  Course condition, though dry, is spiffy with the greens running fast and the fairways running hard.  Mid August like conditions.  One would think we could take advantage of that and shoot some lower scores.  Not happening yet.  Maybe this week.

-Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Community League Results for Week 2

Last week's Community League results are posted here.

Saturday Night's Glow Ball Open

Below are the teams that played in Saturday night's Glow Ball Open and the scores for the daylight nine holes.  The Mike Seals-Karry Stoll-Scott Wallace-Cam Ackerman team shot eight under in the first nine and four under in the second nine (tied by the Dave Wininger-Mike Arvin-Dave Strange-Rob Sterling team who lost on the tiebreaker) to win first place in each event.  The Terry Butcher-Mike Bird-Colin Padgett-Joe Tucker team came in second in daylight with seven under.  No skins were taken in the event (?!).

Thanks to Short Jeffers for all the work he put in to make the event a success (including his blunt and forceful and graphic instructions to the group before heading out for the nine in the dark) and to Mitch Jeffers for doing the grilling between the two nine holes - with capable help from Mom Shirley.  Fifty-three players tried the the day-night doubleheader and, I expect, the majority of them were getting their first taste of glow ball golf (that includes me - did like the arcing of the glow balls in the night sky).  Thanks to all the golfers for being responsible throughout the night with no reported injury to the golfers - that's amazing as we really didn't know what we were doing out there, didn't know where the balls were going to go and couldn't see anybody out there to avoid.  It was easier to see the glow balls though - guess that made it easier to step aside though don't recall ever having to.  All in all, a good time was had by all.

Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible

One of the books that was on our clubhouse bookshelf is sitting on some other bookshelf at the moment.  David Pelz's Short Game Bible: Master the Finesse Swing and Lower Your Score is the book and it has been loaned out several times in years gone by.  If you borrowed a book from me in the past, would you please check your bookshelf and see if this one is still sitting on it.  Would like it back.  Tks.  (No late fee involved.)

Souerdike and Love Race to Victory in Saturday Scramble

Wayne Souerdike and Gabby Love got out of the starting gate fast with birdies at holes two and three and then an eagle at four to take a commanding lead in yesterday's Saturday Morning Scramble.  Their birdie at six was icing on the cake as their five under score of 30 was two strokes better than their closest competitors.  Dave Wininger and Joe Allen, who eagled #6, finished at minus three along with the team of Mike Bird and Larry Hembree.  Other teams in the hunt included Stan Hodges and Kevin Byron at minus one, Mike Seals and Paul Hart at even par, and Mike Arvin and Noah Callahan with an undisclosed final score.

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 9 this morning (when it will still be relatively cool).

-Go, Jason Dufner!  Pretty good run for a guy in his mid thirties.  Mid thirties!  OMG, how can that be?  This is supposed to be the time for the youngsters, the 20 somethings.  Go figure.

-Old news now but my own opinion on the Morgan Pressel slow play call - ridiculous.  However, it did bring to light that the young lady was completely unprepared to handle a little bump in the road on her way to a title.  Hope she's spending some time addressing her reaction to a slap in the face, a little (or big) black ball, coming her way.  Congrats to the winner of the Sybase Match Play Tournament, Azahara Munroz, who got it exactly right when she admitted to being a slow player but not when she's on the clock.

-Rob Sterling's eagle last Tuesday wasn't the only one; Short Jeffers also got one.  Think that makes three for the year in league play.  Still surprised me.

-T-Butch and Short Jeffers' Glo Balls Open tonight starting at 7:30.  Nine holes during daylight, then grilled hot dogs, then nine holes in the dark.  Prizes for each nine holes.  Need I mention safety first tonight, guys?  Nobody wants to get hit by a glow ball or run into a tree, or roll over in a cart, or whatever.  Be aware and do your part in caring for yourself and your buddies.  That said, should be a unique test of ones golfing skills.

-Time to get ready for the more immediate task - the 9 o'clock scramble.  See some of you in a short bit.

Thursday League Results

This morning's league results are posted here.  Congrats to Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz on their resounding win in the Team Handicapped Tournament.

Eagle Man!

Rob Sterling used the cart path to position his tee shot at the 52 yard line on #8 Tuesday afternoon.  From there he pitched it in for an unexpected and more than welcome eagle.  Might be his first ever.

Thursday Match League Players - Come on Down!

Another great day for golf!  Sunny with temps 67 degrees when we start and 77 degrees when we finish.

Our leaders as we start the day are Frank and Susan Fee in the team competition with a slim one and a half point lead over Ken Hudson and Junior Byron.  They go out head-to-head this morning so an opportunity for one or the other to open up some distance at the top.  Lurking five points from the top is the team of Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson who pair up with Dick Lemmon and Dave Brown today; Dick and Dave are in fourth place and looking to get closer to the top - they are eight and a half points back.

In individual competition, Charlie Sheetz is riding high at 142 points and has a one shot lead on Dave Strange, our super sub, who has been representing the Elliott team so far this year.

In the Team Handicapped Tournament, Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz have a four stroke lead over Virgil Harper and Terry LaMar and a ten stroke lead over our Home team (those guys who consistently shoot 35's when they get together).  This is the fourth and final week of the tournament.

Of note:  During competition a year ago, Junior Byron shot the low gross with a 37, JD Faris had the low net with a 26 (!), and JD along with Ken Hudson had the low net team score, a low, low, low 59.  Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson ended the day on top of the team standings and Jack also had the top spot in the individual standings.

Tip for the day:  Know your distance, pick a club that will do the job, make a good swing.  That would be D-C-S: Distance - Club - Swing.  Simple stuff, right?  Right.  Oh, and don't forget to warm up the most important stick in your bag, the putter.

See a lot of you out there in a little bit.

Thursday League - Subs Needed

Still looking for subs for tomorrow's league starting at nine - the Home team and the Elliott team - two each.  (Been away from my computer all day - Jasper this morning, golf course this afternoon and evening.)

Tuesday Men's League Results Event 6

Results are posted here.  Congrats to Larry Sutton and Brent Courter in their one stroke victory over Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling in the Team Handicapped Tournament.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Good weather, good course conditions, good company.  Should be a great day for golf.

Current leaders:

-Mike Arvin and Scott Arthur have slipped quietly into first place in team competition and lead the George Templin/Don Nolan team by seven points with 197 points.

-Kevin Johnson, at 392 points, leads Jack Divine by five and Noah Callahan by thirty in individual competition.

The Team Handicapped Tournament heads to it's final nine holes with a tie at the top:  Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling are sharing that position with Short Jeffers and Jack Divine with scores of minus nine.  Five other teams are within five strokes.  Expecting a pretty low score somewhere along the line today to seal the deal.

Of note:

-Does Kevin Johnson make it three in a row with another 33 today?  How about a 32?

-Do James Hager and Mark Potts join in the fun?  Short?  T-Butch?  Phil?  Doug?

-How about all the guys trying to crack 40 and stay there?  Like Noah Callahan who slipped a little last week with a 41.  Danny Jones, Greg Potts and Tracy Rayhill come to mind as do Junior Byron, Wayne Souerdike, Joe Allen and Colin Padgett.

Better go get myself ready - date at 10 with my playing partners, Terry and Gary LaMar and Virgil Harper.  Think I'll go out and shoot one of those 33's.  Just hope I don't have too many holes to play after I get there.

Thursday Match Play Reports Corrected

The revised reports are here.  Susan Fee brought the software error to my attention when her handicap for the next event didn't jive with her own calculations.  The software was calculating the ladies' handicap under the old par of 36, rather than 35, an item which I had changed in one area but failed to do in a second area (my bad).  The new figures show fairly minor changes in the team standings but rather significant changes in the individual standings.  I left the old reports online if you care to see the differences.  Thanks to Susan for bringing this to my attention.

League Notes

-Community League is underway with newcomer JD Simmons out of the gate fast and leading the pack with a net 32.  The LaMar Brothers along with JD and partner Karry Stoll lead the team standings with 11 points each.  We have seven teams in the league, down from fifteen a year ago.  Additional teams are welcome to join up this week, play 18 holes (both week one and week two), and be part of the fun for the summer.  Eric Bird and Short Jeffers had the low gross scores for the first week, each coming in with a 38.

-The Tuesday Men and the Thursday Match Play Leagues play the fourth and final round of the Team Handicapped Tournament this week.  The Tuesday tournament has two teams tied at the top at minus 9:  Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling, and Short Jeffers and Jack Divine.  Thursday leaders are Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz.

-Kevin Johnson again had the round of the week, a second straight 33.  His round included three birds, five pars and one bogey.

-Best net round of the week:  A tie at 29, a score turned in by Tuesday Men Ryan Johnson and Jack Divine.

-Best Team score of the week: Short Jeffers and Jack Divine's 62 on Tuesday.  Impressive.

-No eagles (that I recall) in league play last week; no hole-in-ones either.  Did have one of each at the golf course though:  Souerdike, Walton and Allen got an eagle in the Saturday Morning Scramble; and DJ Harder notched his third ace at Lakeview on Thursday night out at #7.

-Rules Reminder:  Give yourself a penalty stroke if you have to move your ball out from under a tree or bush or away from the fence.  Back years ago when we had planted a bunch of young trees and bushes, we allowed for a free drop while the plants got themselves established.  They have done that and the free drop is no longer an option.

-Rules Reminder 2:  On hole #1, the ditch down the left side of the fairway is a hazard, the bank leading up to the highway is out of bounds.  If your tee shot is up on the bank - tee up again from the tee box - you'll be hitting your third shot.  If your ball is in the ditch - take the distance, drop where the ball ran into the ditch and access yourself a penalty stroke - again you'll be hitting your third shot but will have gained the distance.

-Final note:  Women in both the Thursday Match Play League and the Community League are playing #1 from the 185 yard line.  Red tee blocks have been moved down there and the hole reverts to a par four rather than the par five from up above.

Hodges, Hembree, Love and Jeffers Win Saturday Scramble in OT

Stan Hodges, Larry Hembree, Gabby Love and Shirley Jeffers used birdies at holes eight and nine to get to five under and then another birdie at the first extra hole, number nine, in overtime to win the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview yesterday.  Also going after the triumph and coming in at five under were the teams of Dave Wininger, Paul Hart and Matt Burch along with Wayne Souerdike, Tyler Walton and Joe Allen.  Missing out on the extra play was the team of Mike Bird, Spenser Souerdike and George Templin who finished at minus three.

Of note:

-Both Stan Hodges and Shirley Jeffers were making their initial appearances of the year in the Saturday scramble and immediately jumped into the winners' circle.

-Larry Hembree stuck his tee shot on the extra hole to three feet of the pin where the team used four putts to sink the winning birdie, Stan's finally dropping into the cup.

-Wayne Souerdike's team had the only eagle of the day, one at #4.

-The par threes yielded only three birdies during the match, two by the winners at #9, one by the Wininger team at #7.  The par fives, on the other hand, averaged 3.875 on the day with seven birdies and the one eagle.  The par fours yielded five birds and three pars.  Only one bogey during the match, that by the winning team at hole #7.

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 9 this morning - that's in a little over an hour from now.

-Saturday Swing Tip:  Ben Hogan's Grip.  #1 golf tip over the years at Golf Digest.  Here are the top 60.  (Got a few minutes?!)

-The Ladies are having fun at the Sybase Match Play Championship.  As usual, lots of higly ranked players have already left town.  Michelle Wie lost on the first day (anybody surprised?).  Also gone: Susann Pettersen, Christie Kerr, Karrie Webb, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, Jiyai Shin.  Still in the hunt: #1 Yani Tseng, Stacy Lewis, Na Yeon Choi, Sun Young Yoo, Angela Stanford, Anna Nordqvist and Julieta Granada.  The 16 remaining in contention double up both today and tomorrow, playing 36 holes each day to decide who's going to win it all.  Third round matches here.

-Gotta get outta here.  See some of you in a little bit.

The Loogootee Way

Jim Bateman dropped off at the golf course a copy of The Loogootee Way: The Tale of How LOOGOOTEE Won the Boys State Basketball Championship.  Guess you all know what that's all about.  Looking forward to seeing this.  Thanks, Jim.  (Tim Sanders said they were selling them at the school yesterday.  Expect they will be available all over the area shortly if not already.

DJ Harder Nets Third Ace At Lakeview

On a quite Thursday evening in May (the 17th), DJ Harder, local long time golfer and current college player at Oakland City, saw another one of his shots lift off from the tee and end its journey nestled in the cup on the green.  It took place at the 7th hole at Lakeview Golf Course with DJ using his Titleist AP1 pitching wedge to drive the Callaway Diablo ball the 120 yards to the hole.  This is DJ's third ace at Lakeview and second at the seventh hole.  His nine hole round of 35 also included a birdie at the 8th hole.  Congratulations, DJ.

Thursday Match Play Results

This morning's league results are posted here.

Tuesday Evening Assistants

Tuesday Men's League player Marvin Graber had some assistants along for the ride last Tuesday night.

Thursday League Players - Come on Down!

Leaders:

-Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz (-5) in the Team Handicapped Tournament with Ken Hudson and Junior Byron in second three strokes back.  The Virgil Harper/Terry LaMar and Jack Home and Jill Home teams are another stroke back.

-In team competition, Ken Hudson and Junior Byron are at the top and go out against Jack Lents and Mike Bird (me) who sit at the bottom of the pack (yikes!).  Two and a half strokes back are Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson; they go up against the guys second from the bottom, Virgil Harper and Terry LaMar.  Some of us are looking for a change, me thinks.

-In individual competition, Junior Byron has a slim two stroke lead over Dick Lemmon and a six point lead on Rex Hudson with Charlie Sheetz another stroke back in fourth place.

Weather today - just about perfect with temps in the 50's and 60's during league play (getting up to 78 eventually), sunny and with winds in the brezzy nature.

-Course conditions - mid summer like here in May.  Look for some run in the fairways and some hard bouncing on the greens.  We could use some rain (during the night, of course) but things look extremely good out there.

-Swing tip for the day: Choose the right club and make a good swing.  Pretty simple, right?  Yes - know your distance, know your clubs and then commit to what you have come up with.

-Living tip for the day:  Be good to yourself and those around you.  What the heck, that shouldn't be so hard, especially for us golfers.

League Notes

-Thursday Match Play League substitutes.  Denny Wagoner is going to be one of the four; expect Dave Strange to be a second (although haven't heard from him.  Still have the other two 'open' spots to be filled.  Let me know if you want to play - tomorrow at 9am.

-Community League:  Note this change:  The women play hole #1 starting at the 185 yard line (we'll get markers down there) which makes it a par four.

-The Kevin Johnson-Matt Burch-James Hager-Ryan Johnson had a pretty good round yesterday.  Kevin got low gross honors with a 33 and was followed closely by James with a 34.  Ryan had himself a best yet this year with a 36 which included a birdie on #8 (the posted photo of him earlier today was taken just after he rolled in the birdie putt).

-Jack Divine had a pretty good net round (29 and a tie with Ryan for low net honors), one that propelled him and his partner Short Jeffers into a tie at -9 with Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling in the Team Handicapped Tournament after 27 holes.

-Yesterday's average gross score was a whopping 2.5 strokes better than a year ago.  Strike it up to better playing conditions with the early spring and summer that we're having, conditions that are allowing each of us to fire lower scores.

-Jordan Divine has himself a pretty good streak going: five hole prizes for the season in five events, one in each of them.  He waited till the last minute yesterday, getting the closest to the pin on #9.

-The hole prize on #3 was a bit confusing - playing early in the day, I witnessed Cam Ackerman drop one within four feet of the pin.  Later in the day, after play was over, the marker was at fifteen feet with Terry Butcher being the second and last name on the marker.  I gave the prize to Cam figuring somebody had moved the marker earlier and forgot to put it back where it belonged.  Could be that Terry got within Cam's mark and then someone moved it out later on.  Let me know if I got that one wrong, guys.

-No eagles again.  Maybe a Thursday Match Play guy or gal will get one.

-Tip for the day:  Practice does not make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect.  Well, maybe not all the time...

Tuesday Men's League Results

Today's results are posted here.

Monday Photos

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Leaders:

-Butcher and Sterling (-10) in the Team Handicapped Tournament by two strokes over Boyd and Hart (-8).  The Jordan Divine/Mitch Jeffers team is third at -3.  This is week three of the four week tournament.

-Butcher and Sterling also lead the team competition at 160 points, five more than second place Potts and Callahan (btw, Mark is back in town).

-Noah Callahan is tops in the individual competition, leading Terry Butcher by 13 points and Scott Arthur by 30.

Course conditions are excellent and I am sure Eric will have some interesting pin placements for us today (as usual). Weather:  Dry, mostly sunny, warm.

Come and down, guys.  Have fun with your round of golf.

League Notes

-Community League gets underway this week.  As of right now, there are six teams signed up for the League (registration continues throughout the week).  Players have till Saturday evening to get their event 1 round into the books.  By default, Tim Sanders and Chris Jones win the preseason scramble as they were the only team to come out and get a score in (during week 1).

-The Tuesday Men and Thursday Match combined gross averages (posted earlier today) through four events show 24 players under 40, 32 players between 40 and 44, 21 between 45 and 49, and 7 between 50 and 53.  Note that those players who play in both leagues have both their averages posted (Byron, Bird, LaMar, Harper, Breeden).

-Surprising stat: Only one eagle so far in league play - Kevin Johnson at #6 during event 1.  There out there, just need to be picked up.

-Rules reminder:  Remember if you hit one out of bounds, you take a penalty stroke and rehit from the same place.  Example:  Tee shot on #5 goes into the pasture to the right;  tee up another ball and you're hitting your third shot.  If you are unsure whether your ball went out of bounds, hit a provisional (which would be your third stroke) and then go see if your ball stayed in play.  Hopefully you find your first ball in play and go on and hit your second shot.

-Rules reminder 2:  We play winter rules which allows you to move your ball a card length.  (Have heard some people say a club length but that's for scramble play, not individual stroke play.)

-League round of the week:  Kevin Johnson's 33 on Tuesday night which included three birds, five pars and one bogey.

-League net rounds of the week:  Terry LaMar and Dick Lemmon each shot 31's on Thursday morning.

-League team net round of the week:  Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling with a 64 on Tuesday afternoon.

-League not-happy-I-did-that award for the week:  Jack Lents' three triple bogeys in a row after starting his Thursday round with a nifty par at #9 (he also pocketed one of my quarters on that first hole with a flag).

-This week, along with the opening of the Community League:  Week three of the Team Handicapped Tournament for Tuesday Men (leader: Butcher and Sterling at ten under) and Thursday Match (leader: Wease and Sheetz at five under).
