Some of you have been looking for the new Kentucky Bluegrass that was planted about a month ago. Here is a pic from last week. Unfortunately the deliciously thick light green patches of grass, in the fairways mostly, is poa...yes, that same stuff that haunts the greens. Too bad that stuff does not survive heat and drought! Hopefully the new Kentucky Bluegrass growth will take hold and crowd out the undesirable grasses. K Blue roots deeper allowing it to survive the summers better.

Here the other ball washer from Dad's memorial fund. It is very nice.

Saturday, November 17, 2012

Thank you for the donations for the Mike Bird memorial. His family felt that an appropriate memorial would be something that was useful and discreet (he never was one to call much attention to his deeds). So, in keeping with the needs of the golf course, two ball washers were purchased. A 4-ball washer (pictured) is engraved and set at the first tee box. The other, single ball washer, will be set at the third tee box (a piece, to be replaced, was broken in shipping). The two new washers will allow an existing washer to be placed at the fifth tee box, giving the course washers at holes 1, 3, 5 and 7.

When researching for the washers I was surprised at how pricey they are. Anybody out there looking for a profitable business needs to give golf course accessories a look!

Karry Stoll, Stan Hodges and Mike Arvin went to the second extra hole before claiming victory over their opponents Dave Wininger, Kevin Byron and Wayne Souerdike. Of note, the winning team had a three stroke lead but gave that away before reaching overtime. Congrats!

Ace man George!

George Templin aces hole #3 for his second career hole in one! He remembers his first at Crane some 25 years ago with his boys at another par three. Monday October 22, 2012 George knew his five iron shot was good as it headed toward the green landing a few feet in front of the flag. As he approached the green he began looking beyond the pin thinking his ball went long, but hooray! there it was in the cup. George hollered up to golfers Butcher, Lents, Lemmon and Hudson on number five green who joked with him that he could not count it because there were no witnesses! Congrats George! Ace Man!

Tuesday League

Some folks took off before waiting out the rainstorm that hit Tuesday night. Typically you need to hang around to see if the storm passes quickly as it did Tuesday. So...the hole prizes will be awarded to those who completed their rounds. If you have yet to complete your round, this event will be considered a rain event. In the future please wait a bit to see if you can finish your round, Thanks

Tuesday league

Looks like I forgot to post that the only teams still playing in the match play tournament are Denson/Strange versus Divine/Jeffers. Congrats fellas! It is for the championship.

And all other teams continue to play as usual. Enjoy.

Tuesday League Play

Three teams did not play and it occurs to me that the last post may have misled you to believe that only the four teams in match play were playing. Wrong, all teams play! The match play stuff is in addition to regular league play. Please come in and post scores before next Tuesday!

Meanwhile please be patient as I learn Dad's method of posting scores online...been a little crazy lately. Thanks!

Upcoming Tuesday League Play

Tuesday features 4 teams going head to head to make it into the championship match. Denson/Strange versus Breeden/Trambaugh and Divine/Jeffers M versus Rayhill/Potts. Good luck gentlemen!

Sunday, July 22, 2012

Yes we are open!!

Leagues will continue as scheduled.

Curt Johnson, Stan Graber and Doug Denson shoot a 6 under to snatch the Manager's Scramble title from four other teams, two of which shot 5 under, D Wininger-G Potts-K Byron and W Souerdike-G Love-J Nickless(who bogeyed to deny themselves a shot at the title in overtime). S Hodges-K Stoll-D Lemmon-J Allen hit 4 under and D Webb-L Hembree-G Webb covered the rear with a 2 under. All of you were kind to share your thoughts about Mike's departure and started the scramble with a prayer (Dad was not much of a prayer guy, but would appreciate the thoughtfulness and goodness coming from a community of golfers.) Just awesome!

Several folks have expressed dismay about schedule conflicts with the Celebration of Life for Michael Bird at 1:30 on Saturday, particularly the Butcher-Gee scramble. Hmm...I wonder which one Dad would have preferred to go to!? Please feel no guilt if you cannot make the celebration. So many of you have already shared your sorrow and expressed your empathy for all of the Bird family. I (Eric) have especially benefited from being around you during Thursday league, Saturday morning scramble and Sunday golfers. Incredible the outpouring of friendship...You have helped me through this insane time...and I have shared your thoughts with the rest of the family...All of you are great! I know that Dad thought so too...he did enjoy being around all of you!

Friday, July 20, 2012

Of course as Dad would wish, a manager's scramble Saturday morning at 9.

A link to Dad's obituary here.

A celebration of life Saturday the 28th at 1:30pm at Brocksmith-Blake in Loogootee.

Thursday, July 19, 2012

Suddenly, instantly my dad Mike Bird died when winds blew three trees onto his cart as he was driving back to the clubhouse Wednesday the 18th around 6:30 pm. He had been playing some golf as was his passion. We thank all of you for your kind thoughts, words and deeds. We expect to have a celebration of life at Brocksmith in Loogootee on the 28th. He was known to say that death was a part of life and would encourage each of us to carry on without worry. I miss you dearly dad! How many hole-in-ones are you getting now?!

Bits and Pieces

-The Thursday League could use a few good subs - Wayne Pearl and Dave Strange will be manning Teams 10 and 12 by themselves as of right now.  Come on out and spend part of your Thursday morning going for that elusive hole-in-one that you've been meaning to pick up for several years now.  Guaranteed fun on the course and maybe a bit of frustration thrown in as well.

-In last night's Tuesday Men's Match Play Tournament, Mike Breeden and Bryant Trambaugh kept making clutch chips and putts and also got the help of the golf gods.  On their last hole playing Wayne Souerdike and Joe Allen and leading the match, 4.5 to 3.5, both Bryant and Mike had their tee shots roll through the sandtrap and up onto the surround.  They each took three to get down but that was enough to tie Wayne and Joe on the hole and win the match.  The other three matches were decided before the ninth hole, the earliest one being the Tracy Rayhill-Greg Potts/Short Jeffers-Ghost Sub match which was decided on the 6th hole.  Short was again shorthanded, something which he faced a week ago and where he came out on the winning side in a match with Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins.  Not to be this week though Tracy and Greg gave him an opening every now and then.

-Mike Arvin and Scott Arthur are as hot as the weather these days.  They shot 36 and 38 in Tuesday Men's League play, a net 61 as a team.  That puts them on top in the team competition with Mike also holding the top spot in the individual competition.

-British Open starts early tomorrow morning with coverage on espn starting at 4:30.  Don't think I'm going to make it.

-Still hot.  Go golf but drink plenty of water - makes for easier nights without cramping legs.

Tuesday League Results

Today's league results have been posted here.  Congrats to the four teams that have advanced to the semi-finals in the July Match Play Tournament.  Next week, Doug Denson and Dave Strange will take on Mike Breeden and Bryant Trambaugh in one match while Greg Potts and Tracy Rayhill will face off against Jordan Divine and Mitch Jeffers in the other.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

-Another hot one - go drink a glass of water.  Apparently I drank enough yesterday as no leg cramping last night, and, yes, I already had some water this morning.

-Four matches in the match play tournament today: Mike Breeden and Bryant Trambaugh up against Wayne Souerdike and Joe Allen, Doug Denson and Dave Strange versus Mike Seals and Nick Toy, Tracy Rayhill and Greg Potts versus Short Jeffers and Jack Divine, and Marvin and Stanley Graber versus Jordan Divine and Mitch Jeffers.  Should be fun.  Hopes it all comes down to a last putt on the last hole - just for the heck of it.

-The rest of us can go out and shoot for pars, birdies, eagles and hole-in-ones.

-Tip for the day:  Stay cool - play early or late if you can, drink water, don't let the small stuff get you down.  And maybe use an extra club on your approach shot on the first hole since you're probably still limbering up.

-See a lot of you some time during the day.

League Stuff

-The July Match Play Tournaments are getting down to the nitty-gritty with eight teams left in both the Tuesday Men's League and the Thursday League.  The Community League is down to four teams with the winners this week meeting for the championship next week.  All three leagues are in head-to-head match play from here on out, and, if tied after nine holes, go to sudden death.  Predictions?  None on my part - match play is where anything can happen, both good and bad, and usually does.  And it doesn't make any difference whether your handicap is high or low, you still have to go out there and look the other guys in the eye and take them down.  On five holes anyway.  Good luck to the contenders - wish my playing partners and I hadn't been bumped in our first rounds.  Btw, there are specially made scorecards in the clubhouse for the matches - be sure and ask for them before you go out with your opponents.  And remember - no twice pars in match play - play till ball is in the cup (for regular season play, we will make the adjustment where necessary).

-Rounds of the week:  Doug Denson and Mark Potts with 33's on Tuesday, Mike Bird with a 35 on Thursday, and Mike Arvin, Jonathan Kemp and Marly Wagler with 37's in the Community League.  Net rounds: Colleen Bird with a super 27 in the Community League, Dan Flynn with a nifty 28 on Thursday, and Mike Arvin and TJ McAtee had 29's on Tuesday.  Team low net rounds: Stan Hodges and Mike Arvin along with the Kemp Brothers posted 62's in the Community League while Dane Mosby and Ed Summers shot a 63 on Thursday (in knocking Jack Lents and me out of the match play tournament), and Joe Allen and Wayne Souerdike came in with a 64 on Tuesday.

-Leaders:

-Tuesday League:  Wayne Souerdike and Joe Allen have taken over the top position with Doug Denson (who dropped his handicap to a nice round zero in shooting that 33) and Dave Strange are in second just ten points back.  In the individual competition, Doug took over the top spot with Wayne and George Templin and Dan Jones all nipping at his heels (along with a host of others).

-Community League:  The Kemp Brothers, Jonathan and Jeremiah, took a week off (they went to New York on vacation) but still held on to the top spot and now hold a nine point lead over Lamar Graber and Marly Wagler and a ten point lead over Eric and Colleen Bird.  Chris Jones leads the pack in the individual standings with a slim five point lead over Jeremiah and an elevan point lead over Lamar.

-Thursday League:  With just five weeks remaining in team play (the other two leagues have nine weeks still to go), Kenny Hudson and Junior Byron continue at the top of the standings with a 9.5 point margin between them and Virgil Harper and Terry LaMar.  The Fees are another point back while Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson find themselves 12 points behind the leaders.  In the individual competition, Dick Lemmon holds a 26 point lead on Susan Fee and a 29 point lead on Pam Byron.  Charlie Sheetz and Dave Strange are an additional five and six points back.

-Rules and Regulations:  Our July Match Play Tournament has made us aware of the rules in a much more overt fashion as one team suffered a hole forfeiture and eventual match loss when the simple rule of putting out was not followed - the ball was picked up in frustration while still in play and no 'that's good' from the other team.  Guess that's something we can all take notice of, in regular season play as well as match play: the putt is not good till it is in the cup or conceded by our playing partners.  So, take your time, finish the hole, and then maybe vent your frustrations by going over and having a serious discussion with your putter, or yourself, while heading off to the next tee box.

-Of note: Only five eagles in league play so far this year (Kevin Johnson, Bryant Trambaugh, Rob Sterling, Short Jeffers and Mike Arvin, all from the Tuesday League).   Mark Potts (Tuesday League) has the most birds to date (24) while Terry Butcher (Tuesday League) and Mike Bird (Thursday League) both have 66 pars.  Both Terry Butcher and Phil Eyler have rounds that were nothing but pars.  No hole-in-ones yet.

We have another week of hot and dry weather ahead of us.  Remember to hydrate constantly.  I am reminded on way too many nights that I don't drink enough water when my legs start to cramp up - something I hate - you would think that I would learn my lesson and drink plenty of water all the time, wouldn't you, what with these very unpleasant consequences?  Note to Mike: go drink a glass or two of water now and again in an hour and then some more two hours from now.

Have a good week of golf.

Bird, Graber and Love Win Saturday Scramble on 1st Extra Hole

Mike Bird, Stan Graber and Gabby Love shot a five under par in regulation to tie Dave Wininger, Larry Hembree and Kevin Byron in the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview yesterday.  On the first extra hole, after a Bird drive just off the fairway on the right at the 95 yard line, Gabby Love pitched to within seven feet of the pin.  That putt was conceded after the Wininger team took three shots to reach the green (their second shot was a punch back into the fairway from underneath the fir tree between the first fairway and the ninth green) and the missed par putt of twenty some feet.  The winning trio used birds at holes one, two, four, six and seven along with three pars to post a score of 30.  The Wininger team had birds at two, four, six, seven and eight to post the same score and force the playoff.  A third team, Wayne Souerdike, Greg Potts and Joe Allen, finished at 32.  The group played in an off and on light rain that didn't dampen anybody's spirits what with the drought like conditions of the last several weeks.

Of note:  The Souerdike team started out like gangbusters with birds at three of their first four holes but then parred out over the last five holes for their score of 32.

Community League Results

This past week's Community League results are posted here.  Congrats to the teams of Bird and Bird, Hodges and Arvin, Kemp and Kemp and Stoll and Simmons for advancing in the July Match Play Tournament.  They will go head-to-head in the semifinals, the first two teams mentioned playing each other and the second two teams playing each other, this coming week to determine who will play in the championship the following week.

Bits and Pieces

Scramble at 9, weather permitting - haven't had to say that in a long, long while.

-Junior Byron passed on to me last night - he and Pam and Kevin were out for their usual Friday evening round - that he and Ken Hudson, the #1 seeded team in the Thursday July Match Play Tournament, had all sorts of fits toppling Dave Strange and his par-shooting-zero-handicap ghost partner Thursday morning.  Came down to the last hole, the 9th, and he had put his tee shot off the green and needed an up and down for par while Kenny had chipped his second shot to four feet.  Dave had a long two putt for par which he failed to make, settling for a four.  Junior did get up and down which left Kenny his four footer for the win which he drained.  Thus, the #1 seed moved on, with a struggle, as did the #2 team, the Fees, also with a struggle - remember, they won on a forfeit by Breeden and Flynn.  More interesting stuff next Thursday when the six winners, and the two teams who lost who got in through the back door (best of the rest with low net scores), go at it again - pairings here.

-In the Community League, am waiting for the Kemp Brothers to get their round in to complete the brackets for next week's head-to-head play in their July Match Play Tournament.  Lamar Graber and Marly Wagler were out last night trying to oust Stan Hodges and Mike Arvin (who were in the clubhouse with a nifty net 62) and came within a whisker of doing so - Lamar failed to get a par on the last hole in a round of 38 and he and Marly carded a 63 to lose by a single stroke.  Hodges and Arvin now go up against the Bird Couple, Eric and Colleen, in one of the two head to head matches.  Karry Stoll and JD Simmons await the winner of the Kemp Brothers-Tim Sanders and Chris Jones match.  Good stuff, right?

-Extensive recap with photos of Na Yeon Choi's victory in the women's US Open from the Seoul Sisters blog.  A goodie - even has one of the few photos with the young super star wearing a dress rather than the much more usual slacks (do people use the word 'slacks' anymore?  maybe those are jeans that she wears...)

-Going to get ready and head to the golf course.  See some of you in a bit.

Friday, July 13, 2012

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 9am tomorrow.

-Short video clip of Na Yeon Choi as a young phenom (from Bangkok Bobby).

-From the same source (or go to ESPN Magazine and its The Body Issue), LPGA star Suzanne Pettersen sans clothes.  Nice body, Suzann.  Note to self: Next time you see her on the news or on the course, think golf.  GOLF.  Got it?  I think I do.  You say Suzann Pettersen?  Now remind me again what I'm supposed to think of?

-Fun at Lakeview yesterday morning in the Thursday League and the first day of the July Match Play Tournament.  Jack and I took on Dane Mosby and Ed Summers with Dane coming out breathing fire and slaying dragons.  The two of them shot a nifty net 63 and whooped us 3 and 2 (we shot a net 68 in a losing effort).  Dan Flynn and Mike Breeden lost their match on a technicality - they lost a hole when Mike picked up his putt rather than holing it; that led to a tie on the round and then another forfeit since Mike had already left the premises and wasn't available for a continuation of the match once the matter was decided.  That was good news for 2nd seeded Frank and Susan Fee.  But the story continues as Dan, who shot the day's low net with a sterling 28 (Dane shot a 29) and Mike slipped into the second round with their low net score of 67.  They join Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz (Mike Strawn subbed for Charlie yesterday) as the teams filling out the second round even though they lost their first round matches.

-Richard Lemmon shot a 38 gross yesterday.  Last week he shot a 40 with a double bogey at his last hole.  Nice round, Dick.  Looks like it's coming together for you (we expected that...).  Terry LaMar's Thursday game is pretty fine as well - he shot a 37 yesterday and has his handicap down to a three (looking forward to seeing you in the A Flight come the last tournament of the season, Terry).

-Should be a very nice day for golf with temps into the 80's.  That's about 20 degrees lower than what we had a week ago.  Have you noticed how nice the mid 90's felt yesterday and the day before after all that heat of last week?  Humidity is back though.

-Heading to B-town.

Photo: Ed Summers and Dane Mosby just after polishing off Jack Lents and me at hole #5 yesterday in the July Match Play Tournament.  #5 green in the background.

Thursday League Results

This morning's league results are posted here.  Congrats to the winners in the 1st round of the July Match Play Tournament.  The teams of Tony Wease and Mike Strawn along with Mike Breeden and Dan Flynn advanced by being the best of those who lost - each of them had net rounds of 67.

Thursday Match Players - Come on Down!

We get our July Match Play Tournament underway with this morning's play.  Some things to remember:

-Scoring is true match play: one point per hole (no 5 points for low net as in regular season play)
-If tied at end of nine holes, keep playing till winner is determined.
-No double par if match point is undecided - play till ball is in hole.  (For league standings, double par will still be in effect and we will adjust the scorecard in the clubhouse at the end of play.)
-To fill out the brackets for the second week of the tournament, the best of the losing teams (low net score) during week one will advance.
-Tournament runs concurrent with regular season play.

Special scorecards have been made - each match will get two scorecards with one being official, the other a copy.  Be sure and check your scores with the other team at the end of each hole - resolve any differences immediately.  At the end of play, be sure they match before you turn them into the clubhouse.

Tip of the day:  If you watched the US Women's Open this weekend, you saw some beautiful women who had swings (golf) that were smooth and sweet and repeatable.  Suggest you hit off the tee like the winner, Na Yeon Choi, and do some pitching like Sandra Gal - she finished in third place and we saw a lot of her short game - silky smooth.

See a bunch of you in a little bit.

Tuesday Men's League Rev 2

Updated the reports for the Tuesday Men's League - T Butch and Rob did play this week - early.  I missed their score big as day on their scorecard.  Updated report here.

Thursday Match Play League Subs Needed

The Thursday League gets its July Match Play Tournament underway tomorrow and it would be great to have a full complement of players.  Right now Dave Strange will be filling in for Team 10 and Denny Wagoner for Team 12 and each team could use an additional sub.  Let me know if you can come out and join our merry little band of rascals and ragamuffins tomorrow morning for nine holes of fun and intense competition.

Tuesday Men's Report Revised

Last night's Tuesday Men's League has been revised here.  Tks to Greg and Mark for the correction.

Tuesday League Results Posted

Today's league results are posted here.  In the July Match Play Tournament, those teams that advanced will play in head-to-head matches next week.  Please make arrangements to do so (play can be anytime Sunday, Monday or Tuesday).

Tuesday Men - Come on Down

-Week 2 of the Match Play Tournament.  Again, play your way in the match play with a low team net score for the nine holes.  Brackets here.  The field will be reduced to eight teams after today's play and will go to head to head match play next week.  First things first though - make it through today.

-Several Tuesday Men came out and got their round in last night.  Must be something going on tonight.

-Guys with the targets on their backs (the leaders in the standings):  Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins in the team competition; George Templin in the individual competition.  No telling who's going to be up there after today's play.

-Tip for the day: Swing like the new women's US Open champion.  That would be Na Yeon Choi who had a weekend to remember up in Kohler, Wisconsin.  Video here.

League Stuff

-Community League results for last week are now posted here.

-This is week two of the July Match Tournaments.  Both the Community League and the Tuesday League continue with play-ins: total net team score determines whether or not you and your partner advance.  Tuesday's bracket here; Community's here.  The Thursday League teams go head to head this week; bracket here.  Thursday players will have special scorecards for their head-to-head matches and will be keeping the other team's score (just like in 'real' tournament play!).

-Rounds of the week:  Doug Denson and Mark Potts shot 34's in the Tuesday League while Terry LaMar (Community) and Susan Fee (Thursday) shot 37's to lead their leagues.  Low net at 29 for the week was posted by Ryan Johnson and Gary LaMar on Tuesday, and again by Gary during his Community League round.  Team low net was shared by the teams of Gary and Terry LaMar in the Community League, and a trio of teams in the Tuesday League: Mike Breeden and Bryant Trambaugh, Doug Denson and Dave Strange, and Virgil Harper and Terry LaMar.  They all shot 62's.

Rules and Regulations and Stuff:

-Hole Prize Markers:  Often in league play we have to move a hole prize marker so that it does not obstruct our putting or chipping line.  On occasion, the marker is not returned to its original position and the rightful owner of a hole prize is denied his or her prize.  To prevent that from happening, suggest that the marker be laid down next to the pin and thus be part of the wrap-up-the-hole-and-move-on process.  (Short version: Don't just stick it in the ground someplace else on the green; lay it down so it is obvious that it needs to be returned to its original position.)

-Hole Prize Markers 2:  Prize markers should be placed so that other players have a shot at the pin.  Would be terrible if your hole-in-one shot got deflected by a effing prize marker, wouldn't it?  Move the marker to a place adjacent to or behind the hole at the same distance from the hole.  Please.

-Not so hot this week but hydrate anyway.  Grandson Ian was at Holiday World the other day and was telling of people dropping left and right because of the heat.  Not good.  Just another reminder that Mother Nature has an unfeeling side to her.  Wouldn't call it a mean streak exactly cause we know she has her reasons for what she's doing with all this heat and stuff.  Just maybe a not so gentle reminder to pay attention.  Think I'll go get myself a glass of water.

Souerdike, Kidwell and Johnson Win Saturday Morning Scramble

Wayne Souerdike, Mike Kidwell and Curt Johnson used birdies at holes one, four, five, six and eight, and pars at the other four to fire a five under thirty and win the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview this morning.  They nipped two other teams who came in at four under: Dave Wininger, Larry Hembree and Kevin Byron shot a 31 as did Mike Bird, Stan Graber and Joe Allen.  A fourth team participated, Junior Byron, Tracy Rayhill and Doug Arvin, and posted a score of 33.

Bits and Pieces

-Saturday Morning Scramble will start at 8am - will go back to the usual 9am start just as soon as the heat spell we're in breaks - probably next week (fingers crossed).

-Something very special happened yesterday in the Thursday League: Susan Fee shot a 37 and captured low gross honors for the event.  I don't ever recall a woman doing this before in league play at Lakeview.  Super stuff, Susan!  We'll look for you at the top more often now that the 'glass ceiling' has been broken.

-Btw, Dick Lemmon came in second with a 40 and that included a double bogey on his last hole (#8).  The guys who usually populate the top of the leaderboard were shooting 41's and 42's.  (My own personal golf goddess, Gigi, served me up some more humble pie with a triple bogey to start - at hole #4 of all places, followed by a bogey and then a double bogey; plus six after three - jeesh!  See that Junior Byron bested me in triple bogeys, finding them at both holes one and eight.  Ouch.)

-Thanks to Wayne Souerdike for coming out and playing yesterday morning.  We all appreciate that.  Dave Strange and Wayne Pearl have signed on for the duration of the season to represent teams 10 and 12.  That still leaves us needing two subs every Thursday for the open spots in those teams.  Wayne Pearl won't be there next week, so we're looking for three warm bodies - with the July Match Play Tournament starting, their help is even more critical.

-More hot today.  People are starting to ignore the heat and are coming out to the golf course even in the heat of the day.  Probably not good though ok if well hydrated.  Personally I'm a little bit past ready for a change.  Maybe in a day or two.

-Wonder if Tiger is going to play this weekend?  Seems he's struggling a little bit at Greenbriar.  Did you see that the girls are going to be on Network TV tomorrow and Sunday?  On NBC.  That's a big plus for us guys who live off the antenna and don't have access to The Golf Channel where most of the ladies events are being televised this year.  They are playing at Blackwolf Run up in Kohler, WI.  The US Open championship.  Current leaders: Cristie Kerr, Brittany Lincicome and Lizette Salas at three under par.  Michelle Wie and Yani Tseng are tied for 38th at plus two.

-Getting on with the day...

Thursday League Reports Revised

Revised reports can be found here and reflect a one stroke correction in the Breeden/Flynn - Fee/Fee match which had a fairly substantial impact.  Shows again how one stroke does make a difference.  More on this subject later.

Thursday League Results

This morning's league results are posted here.  Next week's pairings are also posted in the same report.

Thursday Match Players - Come on Down!

We have a scheduled start of 9 this morning but if you and your playing partners get out there earlier, by all means start if you are ready.  The weather people are predicting 9 o'clock temps at 81 degrees (lovely) and 11 o'clock temps at 94 (kind of cool when put next to the 105's we've been experiencing).  So, another hot day in store for us.  Have you hydrated already?  Best to come to the course with your water tank full - I can't get mine full as evidenced by sleepy-time leg twitches and aches and pains bordering on cramps.  (Taking extra potassium helps, pills and in the form of real food, like bananas.)

The team leaders, Ken Hudson and Junior Byron, have Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz to contend with today.  Should be a good test of their ability to stay at the top.  The second place team, Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson, take on the girls, Pam Byron and Anna Mosby.  With six weeks of team competition to go after today's play, there's plenty of time for the pretenders (teams from 3rd place to 12th place) to get their act together and make a move on the current contenders.

Today's results will determine who you play next week in the July Match Play Tournament - will post the schedule later today.

Tip of the day:  Keep your concentration level at a high level, especially on the putting surface.  Those two and three footers, even if you've been making ten footers all day long, need just as much attention as the longer putts.  (Two such missed short putts got away from me in Tuesday League play.)

See some of you in a short while.

Hodges, Arvin and Johnson Win July 4th Scramble

Stan Hodges, Mike Arvin and Curt Johnson fired a four under 31 to nip Mike Bird, Junior Byron, Joe Allen and Kevin Byron by one stroke in a July 4th Saturday Morning Scramble on Wednesday at Lakeview.

League Results Posted

Today's Tuesday Men's League results have been posted here.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

-Go drink a glass of water right now if you are playing golf today - hydrate early, stay comfortable while you're out there.

-Our leaders:

-Mike Arvin and Scott Arthur in the team competition.  Any team in the top twelve could be in first by tonight.  Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling are just nine back; Wayne Souerdike and Joe Allen (don't think Joe's in town) are thirteen back.

-Scott Arthur is at the top in the individual competition with George Templin and Mark Jones eleven and thirteen back.  Anybody in the top twenty could be on top by nightfall.

-July Match Play Tournament starts today.  Everybody is a favorite in the crazy world of match play.

-Course is ready for play.  Fairways are late August condition - dry, hard and fast (though Eric has watered where he can and your ball is going to get caught up in the green stuff every now and then.  Greens and surrounds are green and green.  The putting surfaces are just about perfect thanks to Eric and the boys (Lucas and Ezra have spent a lot of time replacing sod) and to all you good golfers out there who are taking the time to fix divots - what a huge difference that makes!

-Playing at 8 this morning with Terry LaMar, Virgil Harper and Gary LaMar.  Terry and I are up against Brent Courter and Larry Sutton in Match Play (brackets here), Virgil and Gary are playing Dave Wininger and Karry Stoll.

-I'm outta here.

Bits and Pieces

-Wednesday morning scramble at 8.  That would be the 4th of July.  We'll see how busy the course is.  Know that there are some coming in at 7.  Probably be busy but the weather may keep the crowds down.  May find room for scramblers.  Lets try it.

-Looking for more rain tonight.  So far, nothing.  Thunder in the west though., and quite a bit of green on the radar.

-More hot for the Tuesday Men tomorrow.  Come early, come late, or start hydrating now and come your usual time.  Curt, Tony and I played at 4:45 this afternoon.  Wasn't all that bad - very doable.

-Tuesday Men - regular event tomorrow plus the start of the Match Play tournament.  Low net team scores against your opponent advances you to the second round.  Brackets here.

-Real estate available:  Michael Jordan's digs outside Chicago.  Asking price: $28 million.  I'll pass.

-Just curious:  Is the long putter already becoming passe?

-Four things I think (with apologies to Jeff Skinner at LinksLifeGolf):

-Yani Tsengs' five minutes of fame are not up.  She will return to glory, just don't know when.
-Tiger Woods on the verge of having another great season.  Three wins in the bag already and we're only halfway through the year.  And he's playing more golf.  Seven wins this year?  Not unthinkable.  Throw in a major just for fun.  And the #1 ranking in the world by year's end.
-Notre Dame football will again be big this fall, at least in our household.  Unfortunately, it won't be as big as most Domers would like.
-Yes, we are thinking of football already again.   Grandson Lucas, who some of you see mornings during the week at the golf course, will be catching a few passes for the Cougars in several weeks, making a few blocks and some tackles as well.  Hard to think of football with the temperatures in the hundreds during the day and the 70's at night.

-Guess who came out and played a round of golf with her dad?  Hannah LaMar!  What a surprise.  And, just to show dad she's no slouch on the golf course, she chipped one in from off the green at #3!  Has to be sweet.

A Bit about Tiger

I love this line from Cameron Morfit and golf.com:

Two and a half years after his life fell apart, and a year after McIlroy-mania, it’s looking like the next Tiger Woods may just be Tiger Woods.

Deer Sighted

In the field adjacent to #5 fairway the other night.  It waited about another second before turning tail and bounding off into the woods.

Thursday Match Play Tournament Set

The July Thursday Match Play Tournament is set with the first match taking place on July 12th.  The particulars are here.

Graber, Graber and Byron Win Saturday Scramble in OT

In an earlier-than-usual-because-of-the-heat Saturday Morning Scramble, Marty Graber and son Ricky along with Kevin Byron fired a four under 31 to tie Wayne Souerdike and son Spenser after nine holes.  The trio won the sudden death overtime on the second hole when Marty Graber placed his drive just off the green at hole #2 (see photo below) from where they putted twice for an easy birdie. The Souerdikes, with Spenser having the hot putter during regulation, found the ditch on the right side of the fairway at #2, and were facing a par putt when the winners sank the winner.  One other team participated in the scramble with Mike Bird and Curt Johnson coming in with a one under score of 34.

Photos: Top: Ricky Graber, Kevin Byron and Marty Graber finishing the regulation nine with a gotta-be-smiling score of 31.  Bottom: Marty lining up the putt on the second OT hole, one which led to a birdie and the win.

Lonnie Hawkins and Danny Jones Win Mid Season Scramble

The final results for this week's mid-season scramble are posted here.  Lonnie Hawkins and Danny Jones posted the lowest net score with a 26.67.  The Stan Hodges/Mike Arvin team tied the JD Simmons/Karry Stoll team for second with a net 27.00.  Low gross was turned in by Mark Potts and Noah Callahan with a 29;  Jack Lents and Mike Bird had a 30.

Community League Match Play Tournament

The Community League's Match Play Tournament brackets are set here.  The first week of the tournament starts today with only one match, that between the bottom two teams who will be fighting for the eighth position in the tournament.  The other seven teams in the league advance automatically.  During the first two weeks of the tournament, as in the Tuesday Men's League, low net team score for the week advances you to the next level.  The final two weeks of the tournament, teams will play head to head in actual match play format.

This week it's the Jeffers and Jeffers team up against the Hodges and Arvin team.  The tournament, as with all the league tournaments, runs concurrently with the regular season events.

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 8 this morning.  If you're coming out, go do yourself a favor and drink a couple of glasses of water now.

-The Wie Lass had herself another good round of golf yesterday at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship (wonder if they have a SW Arkansas or maybe a Central Arkansas championship?).  She opened with a couple of bogeys and then went one under for the rest of her round.  She finds herself tied for 55th and one up on Yani Tseng (what has happened to her?!).  Veronica Felibert from Venezuela leads after the first of three rounds with a six under.  Shanshan Feng, a winner earlier in June and the first Chinese (mainland) golfer to win on the LPGA, is in second one back.

-Tiger in contention at the Congressional.  A winner come Sunday evening?  I wouldn't be surprised one way or the other.  Guess it's going to be warm there just like here.  In Arkansas for the Ladies as well.  An endurance contest?

-Last day for Lakeview League teams to get their scramble score in.  Current leaders: Dan Jones and Lonnie Hawkins with a score of 26.67.  Two are tied for second at 27.00: Stan Hodges and Mike Arvin and JD Simmons and Karry Stoll.

-See some of you in a little bit.

Tuesday Men July Match Play Tournament Pairings

Pairings are here for the Tuesday Men's Match Play Tournament.  First two weeks, low net score for the nine holes determines who advances and who retires to the sideline.

Bits and Pieces

-Hot, hot and more hot.  Spent yesterday afternoon in the house and then went out at six to go back to the golf course - we closed it for the afternoon, something we will again do today.  The blast of heat, 106 degrees and a breeze that felt hotter, reminded me of our days in Southern California when we lived in Tustin and were treated to the Santa Ana winds on an annual basis.  Ferociously hot coming in from the desert.  Guess we're being treated to some of the same.

-Scramble at 8 tomorrow morning - we'll be done before the real heat comes in.  Right?!

-Got the Tuesday Men's Match Play Tournament set up - will post the brackets this afternoon.  The top four teams in the standings do get a free pass to week two since we have only 28 teams in the league.  Still working on the Thursday Match Play and the Community League's tournaments.

-Did have two teams come out last night just after seven to play their scramble: James Hager and Ryan Johnson along with Stan and Marvin Graber.  Temps still in the 90's when they started, at 86 when they finished.  Not bad - it was dry heat.  Challenged each of them to try and do as well as Jack Lents and I had done earlier in the day (a 30 gross - missed a birdie at our last hole, the makable 6th, to miss tying the leaders for both the low gross and the low net - dang)).  James and Ryan had a chance on nine after getting to four under at eight, but each of their putts of about fifteen feet collapsed to the left of the cup.  Stan and Marvin did get their birdie at nine, from just off the green, to get to two under.

-Two eagles at the fourth hole yesterday morning during the Thursday Match Play Leagues scramble run:  Virgil Harper pitched one in from 70 yards out for a three, and I chipped one in from ten feet off the left side of the green for  a three as well.  Good stuff.

-If you are going to play golf today, do it now or wait till after seven tonight.  Don't forget to hydrate - start now.  I'm making a Bloomington run so will have to wait till later to golf.
