Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 8 this morning.  If you're coming out, go do yourself a favor and drink a couple of glasses of water now.

-The Wie Lass had herself another good round of golf yesterday at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship (wonder if they have a SW Arkansas or maybe a Central Arkansas championship?).  She opened with a couple of bogeys and then went one under for the rest of her round.  She finds herself tied for 55th and one up on Yani Tseng (what has happened to her?!).  Veronica Felibert from Venezuela leads after the first of three rounds with a six under.  Shanshan Feng, a winner earlier in June and the first Chinese (mainland) golfer to win on the LPGA, is in second one back.

-Tiger in contention at the Congressional.  A winner come Sunday evening?  I wouldn't be surprised one way or the other.  Guess it's going to be warm there just like here.  In Arkansas for the Ladies as well.  An endurance contest?

-Last day for Lakeview League teams to get their scramble score in.  Current leaders: Dan Jones and Lonnie Hawkins with a score of 26.67.  Two are tied for second at 27.00: Stan Hodges and Mike Arvin and JD Simmons and Karry Stoll.

-See some of you in a little bit.

Tuesday Men July Match Play Tournament Pairings

Pairings are here for the Tuesday Men's Match Play Tournament.  First two weeks, low net score for the nine holes determines who advances and who retires to the sideline.

Bits and Pieces

-Hot, hot and more hot.  Spent yesterday afternoon in the house and then went out at six to go back to the golf course - we closed it for the afternoon, something we will again do today.  The blast of heat, 106 degrees and a breeze that felt hotter, reminded me of our days in Southern California when we lived in Tustin and were treated to the Santa Ana winds on an annual basis.  Ferociously hot coming in from the desert.  Guess we're being treated to some of the same.

-Scramble at 8 tomorrow morning - we'll be done before the real heat comes in.  Right?!

-Got the Tuesday Men's Match Play Tournament set up - will post the brackets this afternoon.  The top four teams in the standings do get a free pass to week two since we have only 28 teams in the league.  Still working on the Thursday Match Play and the Community League's tournaments.

-Did have two teams come out last night just after seven to play their scramble: James Hager and Ryan Johnson along with Stan and Marvin Graber.  Temps still in the 90's when they started, at 86 when they finished.  Not bad - it was dry heat.  Challenged each of them to try and do as well as Jack Lents and I had done earlier in the day (a 30 gross - missed a birdie at our last hole, the makable 6th, to miss tying the leaders for both the low gross and the low net - dang)).  James and Ryan had a chance on nine after getting to four under at eight, but each of their putts of about fifteen feet collapsed to the left of the cup.  Stan and Marvin did get their birdie at nine, from just off the green, to get to two under.

-Two eagles at the fourth hole yesterday morning during the Thursday Match Play Leagues scramble run:  Virgil Harper pitched one in from 70 yards out for a three, and I chipped one in from ten feet off the left side of the green for  a three as well.  Good stuff.

-If you are going to play golf today, do it now or wait till after seven tonight.  Don't forget to hydrate - start now.  I'm making a Bloomington run so will have to wait till later to golf.

Thursday Leaguers - Come on Down!

Seems like it's already hot - the sun is already making like mid afternoon.  But it's still in the low 70's.  Hydrate.

Scramble today, for those of you who want to come out and play - it is optional and you can play anytime before Saturday evening - though I don't think it's going to get any cooler from here on till maybe Sunday or Monday.  Jack and I plan to shoot a super low 28 and jump into the lead.

See some of you in a little bit.

Bits and Pieces

-Coming up next week: July Match Play Tournaments in each of the three leagues.  Details shortly.  We'll be getting back to regular season play as well.

-Still got Gabby Love's Ping Eye 2 black dot irons for sale in the clubhouse.  Great set of clubs - you cannot go wrong.  Much better than a lot of the new clubs being sold today.

-Anybody out there interested in an Adams gap wedge?

-Thursday Match Players:  We scramble at 9am tomorrow morning.  Hole prize markers will be out.  Temps expected to be 75 degrees at 9, 88 at 11, 100 at 3.  Hydrate.  Note to partner Jack Lents:  Bring your A game - we're going low - how about a 29?  That would tie us for the current lead; best we make that one better and go for the win.

-Diane's birthday today.  Fiftieth anniversary of her 21st.  Going to take her out to The Junction for a late breakfast at 11:30.  Whoop.  Happy Birthday, Diane.

Photos: From the top:  A Monday afternoon shot of Kay Sheetz who had just learned that she was co-champ of the Community League's June tournament; Chris Jones and Tim Sanders finishing up their mid season scramble at hole #1 on Monday; Terry LaMar, flanked by Virgil Harper and brother Gary LaMar, shortly after chipping in for eagle yesterday morning.

Bits and Pieces

-It's mid-season scramble week for the three leagues and we are having a combined league scramble.  That means that you play best ball with your partner for your event this week, not your own ball.  No regular season event this week- we're taking a little holiday (did the same thing last year). Hole prizes will be offered today for Tuesday League members doing their scramble as well as Thursday morning for the Thursday Match Play members who play then (9am start).  It is a handicapped scramble; handicap calculation: player A's handicap plus player B's handicap with the total divided by three and a maximum of six.

-Played nine holes with Curt Johnson and Tony Trambaugh last night - skins and flags.  Tony got hot after opening with two double bogeys, he played even ball with two birds, three pars and two bogeys. He also got three skins and two flags over that seven hole stretch.  Sizzling.

-Two firsts yesterday:  Denny Waggoner and Larry Hembree each putted for eagle at #2 for the first time in their Lakeview golfing careers.  Gotta love these late August fairways (still would like to see a nice steady rain for the next several nights...)

-Weather today:  more sun and hot though we are having a cool morning - mid 60's here on top of the hill just south of the golf course.  Even cooler tomorrow morning - mid 50's.

League Notes

-Coming up this week:  Mid-season scramble: 2 person, handicapped, nine holes, play anytime during the week.  This is a combined league event with all league players eligible to participate.  Entry fee: already covered in your league entry fee.

-Tournament champions crowned.  The season's second four week, 36 hole tournament was wrapped up this past week with four winners:  Kay Sheetz and Jeremiah Kemp shared the title in the Community League with scores of -10; Pam Byron won in the Thursday League also with a score of -10; and Terry LaMar triumphed in the Tuesday League with a score of -13.

-Coming up in July:  The season's third tournament, the match play tournament.  Details shortly.

-Rounds of the week:  Mark Potts had the low gross with a 33 on Tuesday; James Hager had a 34 in the same league.  Low net round was turned in by John Drake (Tuesday Men) with a super net 27 on a super gross 36.  Tim Sanders and Chris Jones had the low net team round of the week with a nifty 60 in the Community League.

-Team Leaders:

-Mike Arvin and Scott Arthur stay at the top in the Tuesday League even with an off week by Mike; Scott picked him up by going low in his round, something which also vaulted him into first place in the individual standings.  Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling still in second place.  Wayne Souerdike and Joe Allen along with Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins moved into serious contention this week and find themselves within thirteen and nineteen points of the top position.

-Ken Hudson and Junior Byron lost some ground in the Thursday League but still held onto first place by 6.5 points (92 point total).  Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson took them on last Thursday and came out triumphant with a 9-5 match play win which tightened the race for #1.  Frank and Susan Fee drew within striking distance with a 11-4 win in their match with the short handed Dave Strange.  Also moving into contention with a big win was the team of Virgil Harper and Terry LaMar; they handled Dick Lemmon and Dave Brown by a score of 10-4.

-The Kemp Brothers, Jonathan and Jeremiah, are on top in the Community League after six events.  Their 67 point total is nine better than Lamar Graber and Marly Wagler.  Jonathan and Jeremiah each did well in the June tournament, Jeremiah claiming a tie for first with Jonathan coming in third.

-Individual Leaders:

-Chris Jones remains at the top in the Community League at 140 points, a nine point advantage over surging Jeremiah Kemp.  Each did well this past week with net rounds of 30 and 31.

-Dick Lemmon keeps the top position in the Thursday League for the second week in a row but saw his chief competition draw even closer.  Rex Hudson, on the strength of a net 34 round (versus Dick's net 35), finds himself just two points out of first place.  Pam Byron, with her net 30, which propelled her to her tournament win, closed to within seven points of the top position.

-Mike Arvin's fall from the top (after a horrendous net round of 44) benefited his team partner as Scott Arthur climbed into first after a net round of 34.  His 634 points leads George Templin by a scant 11 points (in a league where 100 point swings can occur in a given event).  Mark Jones, who also shot a net 34 on the week, is an additional two points back.

Golf is a Hoot 2!

She hadn't played golf in several years and surprised herself by hitting the ball on her first swing!  That would be Jacee who was part of the Denny Luccini birthday bash Saturday night.  Having fun at the golf course squared!

Mid-Season League Averages Combined

The three leagues averages have been combined here.  No deletions for players in more than one league or for a minimum number of league events (will do that when I post the top 25).

Wininger and Johnson Win Saturday Morning Scramble

Dave Wininger and Curt Johnson played their first six holes at three under (included an eagle at #4), then stormed the citadel with three birds on the final three holes.  The sudden birdie attack brought them in with a sterling 29 and a two stroke victory over the teams of the Doug Denson/Spenser Souerdike and Mike Arvin/Gabby Love/Bryant Trambaugh.  Finishing at three under were Wayne Souerdike and Greg Potts along with Mike Bird and Larry Hembree.  Short Jeffers and Joe Allen played eight and were minus two on their round while Travis Brett and Jake Divine came in at even par.

Of note:

-Doug Denson and Spenser Souerdike got the only other eagle during the scramble, at #6.
-The fourth hole played at an average of 3.86 with six birds and one eagle.
-Holes two and six played even par for four of the seven teams, making them anything but automatic birds.
-The par threes had three birds, one bogey and seventeen pars; the par fours, nine birds and twelve pars; and the par fives, two eagles, seven birds and five pars.
