Stan Graber and Joe Allen Do It Again - Win Lakeview Scramble

Stan Graber and Joe Allen fired a four under par round of 31 to win their second Lakeview Saturday Morning Scramble in a row.  The pair used excellent iron play to get close to the pin, making four birdies and five pars in their bogey free round.  Paul Hart and Mike Bird also had four birds in their round but stumbled with a bogey at the first hole to finish at minus three and in second place.  Five other teams of two competed for the prize with Wayne Souerdike and Tracy Rayhill joining the teams of James Hager and Kevin Bryon and Mike Seals and Curt Johnson at 33.  Greg Potts and Jon Boyd posted a 34 and Tyler Walton and Larry Hembree a disappointing 36.

Photo:  Stan Graber and Joe Allen had to wait a bit before learning that they had again won the Lakeview Scramble.  The twosome shot a four under 31 and beat Mike Bird and Paul Hart by a single stroke.     Photo by Michael Bird.

Tuesday Men's League Event 14 Recap

James Hager, Dave Wininger, Short Jeffers and Josh Hawkins posted matching 33's in the Tuesday Men's League this past week.  The two strokes under par was good for the low gross of the day.  Hawkins best ever 33 resulted in a net 28, good for the low net score among the 60 some golfers.  Low net team score of 64 was turned in by three teams: Dan Jones and Lonnie Hawkins, TJ McAtee and Alan Burch, and Noah Callahan and Mark Potts.  Hole prize winners were TJ McAtee, Alan Burch and Jack Lents on the close to the pin shots; and Mike Bird, Terry Butcher and Tyler Walton with long putts.

In the races for the top spots in the standings, the two teams in the lead in the team competition did not change though each of them had off weeks.  John Walker and Skip Ackerman shot a net 74 and garnered only 6 points for their efforts but held onto the top spot with a total of 521 points.  Second placers Tom Walker and Mike Bird fared only slightly better with a net 73 and 11 points  and find themselves 7 points back.  Tracy Rayhill and Greg Potts posted a net 67 and climbed into third place at 499 just in front of Curt Johnson and Tyler Walton at 498.  In individual competition, Jordan Divine shot a gross 35, a net 32, claimed 90 points and took over the top spot with 1026 points.  Last week's leader, Skip Ackerman, shot a gross 41 with a net 38 and received only 16 points in his tumble to second place, 41 points in back of Divine.  Dan Jones, with an even par round of 35 and a net 31 earned 103 points and is now in third place at 976 points.  The group's average gross score of 41.64 was slightly higher than last week's 41.46.

TMPL Event 15 Recap

Pam Byron and Patty Bowling beat Ken Hudson and JD Faris by a score of 11 to 3 to stay on top in the Thursday League's team competition.  Ed Summers and Dane Mosby, with a 13.5 to .5 victory over a 'ghost' team, moved into second place.  The two frontrunners joined with the teams of Joe Gray and Bob Elliott and Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon in posting the low net team score for the day with minus 6's.  In individual play, Dick Lemmon stayed on top with a net round of  33 and a total of 41 points.  His season total of 534 points leads Joe Gray by 20 points and Jack Lents and Mike McLaughlin by 23 points.  John Chapman had the low net score for individuals with a 30 while Mike Bird came in with the low gross, a 37.  Hot shots belonged to Rex Hudson and Pam Byron with close to the pin shots, and to Al Kavanaugh for the longest putt at #8.  The group's average gross score for the day was 44.83, up from the 44.03 posted last week

In the Thursday League's 36 hole July Tournament, Dane Mosby and Ed Summers took home the trophy with a total of 28 points.  They won 8.5 of 9 points in their match this week when their opponents failed to show.  Pam Byron and Patty Bowling placed second with 23 points.

Graber and Graber Take Community League Match Play Championship

Stan Graber and Ryan Graber won the Community League's July Match Play championship last night by besting Mike Bird and Larry Wininger, 2 and 1.  The Grabers jumped to a three up lead through three holes before letting their opposition on the scoreboard and closed them out with a couple of pars on the eighth hole.

TMPL Results

Results for this morning's league play are posted here.  Congrats to Dane Mosby and Ed Summers for their win in the July Match Tournament.  They score 8.5 points today and finished with a total of 28 points, five better then their nearest competitor, Pam Byron and Patty Bowling.

TMPL'ers - Come On Down!

Hope you are drinking a glass of water with that cup of coffee this morning.  It's going to be a hot one though expect we will all be under cover by the time the sun is high in the sky.  And, to boot, the temperatures right now are in the mid 70's.  Almost heavenly, right?

Dane Mosby and Ed Summers (he of the 36 gross last week) try to capture the Thursday League's July Tournament.  They go into the last day with a 2.5 point lead on Pam Byron and Patty Bowling and within striking distance of several other teams.  Standing in their way is the team of Frank and Susan Fee.  And Pam and Patty have to successfully navigate past Ken Hudson and JD Faris.  Best they bring their A games 'cause that's what the rest of us are going to do.

Tip for the day: Hydrate.  Hydrate now and in the hours to come.

Dennis Brosmer and Tom Trambaugh Heading To The Championship Match

Dennis Brosmer and Tom Trambaugh, the 32nd seed in a 32 team tournament, are headed to the championship match in the Tuesday Men's July Match Play Tournament.  The dynamic duo came from one down with three holes to play to beat Rob Sterling and Terry Butcher one up last Tuesday.  They will go up against the father and son team of Terry and Colin Padgett who advanced when their opponents failed to show for the semi final match.  Should be a good one.

Tuesday Men's League Event 14 Results

Today's league results are posted here.  Congrats to Dennis Brosmer and Tom Trambaugh and Terry and Colin Padgett for their wins today in the July Match Play Tournament.  They will play each other next week for the championship.  And congrats to our four '33's' on the day: Dave Wininger, Short Jeffers, James Hager and Josh Hawkins.  That's a new low for Josh.  Impressive stuff out there today.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Semi final matches in the July Match Tournament today.  Tom Trambaugh and Dennis Brosmer go up against Rob Sterling and Terry Butcher around three today while Chad Wade and Travis Brett take on Terry and Colin Padgett a little later.  Expect both to be close affairs if last week is any indication - three of the four matches went to the final hole with the other one being decided on the next to last hole.  Good luck and have fun in the head to head competition, guys.

John Walker and Skip Ackerman lead the pack in the team competition with Skip also leading the individual standings.  The course is in lovely condition with the fairways giving a bit of run and the greens very soft with the watering and the humidity.  And the weather is sunny and hot later today though just about perfect right now with the temperatures about 70 degrees.  Been a while since we've seen those conditions in this area.  Play safe - hydrate before and during your time out in the sun.  And, of course, bring your A game and have fun.

Paul Hart Chipping in OT

Stan Graber and Joe Allen Win Lakeview Scramble in OT

Photo: Joe Allen and Stan Graber walking off of the first green at Lakeview after making par and winning the Saturday Scramble in overtime.     Photo by Mike Bird.

Stan Graber and Joe Allen made three birdies and two bogeys during regulation and then a straight forward par on the first extra hole to win the Saturday scramble at Lakeview.  Wayne Souerdike and Paul Hart, after starting their round with a bogey, made six pars and a couple of birds to tie Graber and Allen with a score of 34.  They then repeated themselves on the first hole by driving the ball right and having to lay up before going at the pin, and ending up with a disappointing bogey.  Two other teams of two participated in the scramble with Junior and Kevin Byron along with Mike Bird and Denny Wagoner each finishing with even par rounds of 35, one shy of the playoff.

Of note:  The winners used the short stick effectively as Graber sank putts from off the green at holes three and four for birdies and Allen followed suit by running in a twelve footer at #8 for what turned out to be the shot that got them into the playoff.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

The July Match Play Tournament bracket has been updated here.  All the week 3 matches are set with one exception - still waiting for a week 2 score from TJ McAtee and Alan Burch to see if they advance to week 3 play (Rob Sterling and Terry Butcher, their opponents, have already played their round - they were one of the few teams that got their round in in last Tuesday's heat).

Warm today so remember to hydrate starting now.  Play early or late if you possibly can; have fun in the sun if you can't.  Tom and I are going out at nine this morning to check the waters.  Join us if you can.

Tueday Men - Expect to play League on July 19th

Looks like we're going to be hot but not as insufferable as last week.  Plan on coming out and playing some golf tomorrow.  Suggest you start hydrating now and play early if you can.  Late could work as well if you are especially susceptible to the heat.

Thursday League Note

Because of the expected 'warm' conditions, Thurday's Match Play Tournament League starting time has been moved to 8am.  Players have the option of playing at an earlier time on Thursday, or even at the originally scheduled 9am time, if they have the agreement and concurrence of their opponents.  Teams must go out with their scheduled opponents.

In the Community League's July Match Play Tournament, Chris Jones and Tim Sanders advanced to the semi finals with a win over Dale and Richard Yoder, a match that wasn't decided until the ninth hole.  They will face Ryan Graber and Michael 'Finny' Graber who advanced after beating Emanuel Wagler and Adrian Graber in a match that was decided with a tie breaker after each team finished nine holes at 4.5 points each.  In the other semi final match, Gary and Terry LaMar advanced with a 2 and 1 victory over Clint Knepp and Rob Graber.  They will meet Larry Wininger and Mike Bird who advanced when their opponents, Ken and Sharon Frye, were unable to play.

TMPL Event 13 Recap

Pam Byron and Patty Bowling slipped back into first place in the regular season standings with a 10 to 4 win in their match with Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson.  Las week's leaders, John Chapman and Dick Barber could only manage a tie with their opponents, Jack Lents and Mike Bird, each team scoring 7 points in their match.  That leaves them a scant half point behind Pam and Patty in the standings.  The teams of Joe Gray and Bob Elliott and Vic Wallace and Phil Roberts are tied for third at 97 points after 10.5 to 3.5 wins in their matches with Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz and Junior and Kevin Byron (subbing for Wayne Pearl) respectively.  A change also took place at the top of the individual standings with Dick Lemmon, after a even par net 35 and 34 points on the day, taking over first place with 454 points.  The surging Joe Gray, with the low net score of the day at 28, earned 60 points and finds himself in second place at 448 points.  Another surging player, Al Kavanaugh, had the low gross of the day, an even par 35, and collected 53 points for his efforts.  He is in third place at 445 points.  Low net team score was turned in by Terry LaMar and Virgil Harper with a 63.  Susan Fee and Phil Roberts collected the hole prizes at the par threes with close to the pin shots while Ken Hudson sank the longest putt of the day at hole #8 for that hole prize.

After two weeks in the league's four week July Match Tournament, Dane Mosby and Ed Summers kept the top position and lead Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh by 1.5 points with a total of 13 points.  Vic Wallace and Phil Roberts along with Terry LaMar and Virgil Harper are two points back and tied for third.

TMPL Results

Today's League results are posted here.

Community League Match Play Tournament: Sanders and Jones along with Ryan Graber and Mike Graber Advance

Photo: Chris Jones putting on the 7th hole last night as partner Tim Sanders, on the right, and Richard Yoder and Dale Yoder watch.

Chris Jones and Tim Sanders needed nine holes to subdue Richard Yoder and Dale Yoder last night as the two teams battled to advance in the Community League's July Match Play Tournament.  The winners now go on to play Ryan Graber and Mike F. Graber who also played yesterday and needed a tiebreaker to beat Emanual Wagler and Adrian Graber.  The two teams, playing two hours apart, each won 4.5 points through the nine hole round.  The Graber-Graber team won the tiebreaker on the first hole going back on the cards.  Two other matches remain to be played to determine the final two teams for the semi finals.  Clint Knepp and Rob Graber face Terry LaMar and Gary LaMar while Ken and Sharon Frye must face Larry Wininger and Mike Bird.

Thursday Players, Come on Down!

The July tournament leaders, Dane Mosby and Ed Summers, go up against Dave Strange and Tim Sanders today while the league leaders, Dick Barber and John Chapman, take on Jack Lents and Mike Bird (looking to rebound from an embarrassing 11-3 loss to Al Kavanaugh and a 'ghost' substitute last week).  Pam Byron and Patty Bowling look to regain the top spot and do battle with Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson.  The whole crew gets to do battle with the top gun in the individual standings.  That would be Mike McLaughlin who sits 15 up on Dick Lemmon and 34 up on Patty Bowling.  The course is in great condition with some roll in the fairways and some softness in the greens and the weather looks divine.  You still have to bring your A games, I expect, if you plan on doing well.

Tip for the day: Make sure your alignment is right and then smack that little golf ball straight down your target line.

George is Back!

Saw George Templin back on the golf course for the first time in forever.  George had problems with his heart which came up after a routing check several months back.  Hey, George, it's good to see you back on the course and in fine fettle!

Weather Event Follow Up

About 20 Tuesday Men got in their rounds yesterday, the majority of them suffering through the heat of the day to do so.  Several more did show up just after 5:30 only to be faced with an oncoming storm.  Four chose to stay and did finish their rounds but did get soaked in the process.  The storms did break the back of the oven-on-high like temperatures of the past two days.  That was nice.

Tuesday Men - Today is a Weather Event!

It's going to be hot today and we going to make golf an option for the Tuesday Men.  Today's league is now a weather event and players have seven days, until next Tuesday, to get in their round.

If you are coming out: Come to the course hydrated - start drinking water now (I just finished my first 20 oz bottle); drink water while you are on the course and then find a cool place to have some more when you are done.  Go here for more info on heat illness.  Be smart, be safe.

Bits and Pieces

-Watching the Women's US Open.  One South Korean, So Yeon Rhu, has just birdied the 72nd hole to tie another South Korean, Hee Kyung Seo, who slept on the lead after finishing her 72 holes yesterday.  Three hole playoff coming up.  Tks to NBC and espn for making it available.  Good stuff by the women.

-For the men:  Stricker was fantastic yesterday, at least the short time I was watching.  Turned on the action on CBS when NBC and the rain delayed women went off the air and watched Striker play the 18th hole.

-For the Tuesday Men here at Lakeview, second round of the July Match Play Tournament is coming up tomorrow.  Strongly suggest that, if you advanced, get a hold of the team you're paired up with and go out together.  Makes for a much more intense and exciting outing.  Remember, lot net team score for the nine holes gets you to the third round and head-to-head match play.

-For the Community League, second round of its Match Play Tournament is also this week.  But there is a difference.  Community League teams are in head-to-head play this week.  Here every effort should be made to go out head-to-head.  Call the clubhouse if you need help in arranging times to go out together.

-Fun time even if the heat is almost unbearable.  Tip for the day: drink water - before, during and after.  Stay hydrated.

-Note to Chad and Travis:  We (Tom Walker and me) are paired with you tomorrow and, yes, want to go out with you.

Community League Recap Event 5

The Community League's July Match Play Tournament completed its first week with two very close matches and one where both teams went low with stellar efforts by individuals on both teams.  The LaMar Brothers, Gary and Terry, had to use the tiebreaker and go back to the seventh hole before getting past the team of Noah Miller and Galen Lengacher.  Each fired net 68's in their round this past week.  Clint Knepp and Rob Graber survived their match by a single stroke, 66 to 67, in a match that went into the last hole all square.  The match between the Noah Callahan-Paul Hart team and the Tim Sanders-Chris Jones team saw new lows by both Noah Callahan and Chris Jones and stellar scoring by all involved.  Noah got his first par round at Lakeview while Chris Jones had his best ever round, a 39, a score which gave him a super low net of 24.  That propelled him and Sanders past Callahan and Hart, subbing for Jeremy Wildman, by a score of 55 to 59.  In other matches, Ken and Sharon Frye advanced when their opponents, Allen Yoder and Jon Kemp, were unable to get their round in.  Larry Wininger and Mike Bird beat Short Jeffers and Dave Wininger, subbing for Shirley Jeffers, by a score of 71 to 75.  Dale Yoder and Richard Yoder beat Ken Wagler and Jeremy Graber by seven strokes, 65 to 72.  Ryan Graber and Michael Graber, subbing for Stan Graber, had a four stroke win over Billy Trabant and Duane Wagler, 72-76.  The team of Emanuel Wagler and Adrian Graber, the leader of the regular season standings, had a bye to the second week's action.

In the standings at the end of the week, Noah Callahan jumped into first place with his even par round and the earning of 52 points.  He is 29 points up on second place Emanuel Wagler with 212 points for the season.  Emanuel Wagler and Adrian Graber continue at the top in the team standings although their lead has shrunk to three points.  Their season total of 96 tops Noah Callahan and Jeremy Wildman in second at 93, and the team of Clint Knepp and Rob Graber in third at 83 points.  Low net score for the week was Chris Jones' 24.  Noah's 35 was the low gross while the 55 posted by Chris Jones and Tim Sanders was the low net team score.  The group average for the week was 42.18, down from 43.04 of a week ago.

Ron Hettle and Larry Hembree had to go one down with a bogey at their fourth hole on Saturday before getting down to business and going on to win the weekly scramble at Lakeview with a score of 32.  The duo, starting on hole #6, had three pars and then a bogey at hole #9 before getting their first birdie at hole #1.  They then went on to birdie three of the next four to come in with their winning score, a three under par 32.  They bested five other teams on the day: Short Jeffers and Kevin Byron along with Tyler Kidwell and Curt Johnson each came in one back with 33's.  Wayne Souerdike and Paul Hart joined Mike Bird and Steve Norman two back at 34 while Mike Kidwell and Spenser Souerdike finished three back with an even par round of 35.

TMPL Event 12 Recap

Ed Summers and Dane Mosby fired a team low net of 62 and took the lead in the Thursday Match Play League's July Match Tournament.  The duo dominated the short handed team of Joe Gray and Bob Elliott and won their match by a score of 13 to 1.  Ed led the way with a sterling round of 40 which gave him a net score of 29, good for the low net of the day.  Low gross scores were shot by Junior Byron and Al Kavanaugh, each of whom shot 37's.  Dick Barber and John Chapman, with an 8.5 to 5.5 match win over Frank and Susan Fee, held on to the top position in team competition.  Pam Byron and Patty Bowling stayed close with a 9.5 to 5.5 win over Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz.  Mike McLaughlin shot a net 34 on the day, garnered 34 points for his efforts and retained the top spot in individual competition.  He leads second place Dick Lemmon by 15 points; Dick shot an even par net 35 in his round and claimed 25 points.  Hole prize winners for the week were Pam Byron and Jack Butcher with close to the pin shots and Wayne Pearl with the long putt of the day.  The group average gross score was an even 45, up almost a half a stroke from last week's 44.59.

Thursday Players, Come on Down!

Going to be a lovely day.  What better way to start it than by coming out and playing a little golf!  Of course, maybe you've been out for a 3 mile walk already, and had a healthy breakfast.

The Thursday crowd starts its version of the July Match Play Tournament (here for details).  It runs for the entire month - four dates; team with the most of the hole points (not the low net points) gets the prize.

For the regular season, the leaders at the moment are John Chapman and Dick Barber in team competition - they go up against Frank and Susan Fee this morning.  And Mike McLaughlin in individual competition - he goes up against the field.  Leaders at the end of the day?  Could be any of a number of teams and individuals.  Best come out with your A game and see if you can grab the brass ring.

Tuesday Men's League Event 11 Recap

The July Match Play Tournament started with the #2 seed as well as last year's champions making an early exit.  Dennis Brosmer and Tom Trambaugh, the 32 seed, fired a net 66 to beat the #2 seeded team, Skip Ackerman and Mike Strawn (subbing for John Walker) by a single stroke.  Last year's champs, Mike Albertson and Mark Jones, fell to #4 seed Jordan Divine and Mitch Jeffers by a score of 66 to 74.  In the 16 matches on the day, nine were won by the underdogs while seven went to the favorites.  The #1 seeded team, Curt Johnson and Tyler Walton, beat the short handed team of Tim Voegerl and Warren Atkison (unable to play), 71 to 73.  The #3 seeded team,  Tom Walker (with Vic Wallace subbing) and Mike Bird, advanced by beating Wayne Souerdike and Joe Allen by four strokes, 64 to 68.  The tournament continues next week with eight matches and, again, with the net team score for nine holes determining the winner.  Weeks three through five will be played in head to head match play format.

In regular season action, Mark Potts at 33 and James Hager at 34 turned in the low gross scores for the day.  Vic Wallace with a 28 and Jordan Divine with a 29 had the low net scores.  Team low net was a 64 shot by Vic Wallace and Mike Bird.  John Drake shot a net 35 and increased his slim lead in the individual standings.  At 844 points, he leads second place Jordan Divine by eight and third place Skip Ackerman by nine.  In team competition, the Tom Walker/Mike Bird team, with an assist from Vic Wallace, took over the top position on the strength of their 62 point day.  Their 458 points leads the John Walker/Skip Ackerman team by a scant six points and last week's leaders, Curt Johnson and Tyler Walton, by seventeen points.  Hole prizes were claimed by Dave Wininger, Travis Brett and Mike Breeden with close to the pin shots, and by Jordan Divine, Mark Potts and Short Jeffers with long putts.  Average gross score for the group was 42.68, up a bit from the 41.86 of a week ago.

Jan Denson - Rest in Peace

Long time Lakeview golfer and wife, mother, grandmother and friend of Lakeview golfers, passed away last Saturday afternoon.  May she rest in peace.

Viewing is this afternoon at Brocksmith's here in Loogootee with the funeral mass tomorrow at 10am at St. John's.

I did it again...

So, I posted the averages and then said to myself it's time to put together the weekly news report for the Tribune.  Wait a minute, I thought, wondering if because of the holiday there was another early submission of articles.  Went into the other room and checked last week's issue to see if there was a reminder/notice on the front page.  Yup.  Due last Friday.  Dang.  That means another oppsie for me - no Lakeview Golf Course News article in the Tribune this week.  Dang, again.

TMPL Event 11 Recap

Change at the top, again.  Mike McLaughlin jumped into the lead in the individual standings at 401 points with a three under, 52 point effort in the Thursday Match Play League yesterday.  He, along with Dick Lemmon, moved ahead of last week's leader, Patty Bowling, in what is turning out to be a fight for the top spot.  Nine players now sit within 40 points, a good day's effort, of first place.  Lemmon is 6 points back at 395 with Bowling at 389.  Dave Brown, Joe Gray, Jack Lents, Mike Bird, Jack Butcher and Al Kavanaugh run 3 through 9 in the standings and are definitely within striking distance.  In team competition, Dick Barber and John Chapman, with a total of 90 points, retained the top spot for the second week in a row even though they lost their match with Larry Sutton and Denny Wagoner, 9.5 to 4.5.  McLaughlin and partner Leroy Allbright, with a 10-4 triumph in their match with Phil Roberts and Vic Wallace, tied Pam Byron and Patty Bowling for second with 86.5 points.  Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon had the most dominant performance of the day with a 12-2 victory over Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson.  Joe Gray and Dave Strange, with a 11.5 to 2.5 match win over the Byron-Bowling team, shot matching gross 45's and net 29's to lead in both the low net for individuals for the day (29) and low net for team (a sterling 58).  Mike Bird, with an 8 par 1 bogey performance, shot the low gross round with a 36.  Claiming hole prizes on the day were Mike Anderson and Terry LaMar with close to the pin shots and Susan Fee with a long putt.  The group gross scoring average this week was 44.59, down from the 44.78 of a week ago.

Of note:  Mike Anderson had two birdies in his round of 41.  A double bogey at hole one followed by a triple bogey at the second hole ruined what, for the other seven holes, was a pretty good showing by the big man from Montgomery.
