Bits and Pieces

-Today at 11am, the majority of the Thursday Match Play League players will be going at each other in the make up of last Thursday's rained out event.  At least two teams are playing that event after tomorrow's event 3.

-Several Tuesday Men got in their rounds last night.  Mike Breeden and Bryant Trambaugh have been johnny-on-the-spot with their play, getting their rounds in at the appointed time each of the last three Tuesdays.  Jake Divine, Derek Gilbertson, Scott Arthur, Dave Wininger, Karry Stoll, Paul Hart, Kent Summers, Jon Boyd, Matt Burch, and Noah Callahan were also out there.

-Nice photo of Michelle Wie arriving at Incheon Airport.  She's growing into a beautiful woman.  She dresses up nicely.

-For baseball fans out there, the season's first no hitter was thrown just up the road in Chicago.  The Twins' Francisco Liriano stymied the White Sox in a game where the pitchers had the upper hand.  Final score: 1-0.

-Wrapped up yesterday by playing nine with Wayne Souerdike.  Had enough club on about half my approach shots and did a horrible job of getting up and down though was better at the end than in the beginning.  Need playing time.  Think Wayne would agree that our golf looked more like February golf than May golf.  But it was good to get back into the swing of things without rain falling down on our heads.  Grounds were soggy and there was about zero run on the ball in the fairways.  Greens were nice.  Play some more today, tomorrow, and then the next day.  Always helps, right?  Right.

-Tip for the day: Dress warmly, enjoy the company of your friends, hit the ball square.

Bits and Pieces

-Dave Duerson had brain damage.  Long time football player for the Fighting Irish and the Chicago Bears committed suicide this past February and requested that his brain be given to the NFL's Brain Bank for research.  This updated report from espn is yet another strong link between brain disease and the game of football where 'knocking heads' is raised to new and frightening levels with every passing year.  One good thing:  Lots of attention to the issue.  Eric was telling me yesterday of yet another advance: a helmet with electronic sensors that measures and records 'hits' and thus gives players and coaches early warning.  Grandson Lucas is a player at North Daviess and is in weight training this spring.  Yes, he's looking forward to playing ball next fall.  Somebody keep count of his 'hits', please.

-On Westwood being #1 in the world after playing golf with the lesser lights over in Asia (Dustin Johnson was in the more recent tournament and he does qualify as a non lesser light):  I would say there needs to be a change in the ranking system.  Question:  If you were making up a team of five, would he be on your list?  Not mine.

-On Michelle Wie's early departure from the Avnet LPGA Classic in Mobile last week:  She was in good company as Yani Tseng (world's #1 lady golfer) and Mika Miyazato also missed the cut.  Unusual and disappointing.  Also disappointing, a fourth round for the youngster, Lexi Thompson, who started the day tied for first and ended it tied for 19th after a +6 round.

-On rain:  The .4 inches of rain expected over these last few days has turned into 3+ inches.  Over nine inches for the last ten days.  Grass is growing; water tables are full.  Time for some sun and warm.

-Heading to the golf course for a bit.

Tuesday Men's League Event 3 Declared a Weather Event

That would be today's regular event.  League members have until next Tuesday, May 10th, to get their rounds in.  Those who have yet to complete their event 2 round have the same get-it-done-by-then date.

Thursday Match Play League Schedule Change

There was a glitch in the randomly generated Thursday Match Play League schedule which has been corrected with the revised schedule here.

The revision removes the June 30th Midseason Scramble, shifts events 10-15 up a week and adds an event on August 4th.

The glitch had the majority of the teams playing all but one of the teams on the schedule and playing one team twice.  The correction leaves the 'playing one team twice' and adds the omitted team on August 4th.

Thursday Match Play participants will still be eligible to play in the Mixed League Midseason scramble but will play it on their own anytime during the week of June 26th.

League Make Up

-Tuesday Men's League: Because of wet conditions and continuing rain, players will have another week to make up their event 2.

-Thursday Match Play League:  Wednesday at 11am if conditions allow.  Okay to play after event 3 on Thursday as well.

Thursday Match Play Event 2 Make Up

It's raining, again and still.  The scheduled 9am today make up for the Thursday Match Play League event 2  is rescheduled for Wednesday at 11am.  Of course, you do have the option of getting together with your partner and opponents at some other time before Thursday's event 3.

Thursday Match Play Moday Play Update

The Thursday Match Play League's postponed round from last Thursday is scheduled to be made up tomorrow at 9am.  We again may have a problem with the weather with today's rain amounting to an inch - that gets us up to about seven inches in the last ten days.  If at all possible, we will go ahead and play tomorrow morning.  However, there are options.

-first 'weather event' option: play tomorrow at 9am.

-second 'weather event' option: play at some other time with your partner and your opponents before next Thursday's event #3.

So, for now, the plan is to meet tomorrow at 9.  If the rains continue and/or the grounds are again unplayable, we will again postpone and play another day.

If it's any consolation, yesterday was a lovely golfing day.  Grounds a bit wet but nothing like they are again right now.

(Thanks, Shirley, for getting me to get this information online!)
