Crane Flies

I think all those flying insects out at the golf course are Crane flies. Shirley Jeffers referred to them as wheat bugs. From the link:
Numerous other common names have been applied to the crane fly, many of them more or less regional, including mosquito hawk, mosquito eater (or skeeter eater), gallinipper, gollywhopper, and jimmy spinner.


I like the term 'gollywhopper'. They are harmless and birds like them.
