Senior League Results Event 10

The results are posted. All the seniors showed up and all of them stuck around to finish their rounds. So, I think the bugs have met their match. Highlights and comments:

Junior Byron chipped one in on #4 for his first eagle of the year; partner Pam Byron also did well with a par five on the hole and finishes with a gross 45 and a stupendous net 22. Wow! Jack Butcher had the most pars with five; Mike Bird the most birdies with two; and Junior Byron had the lone eagle of the day. Vic Wallace and Dale DeLong had superior rounds of 46 and 47 and a team net of 58, second to the sterling 54 team score of Junior and Pam Byron. Vic and Dale think maybe the bugs had something to do with their improved play but we decided that they were not welcome to stick around. In spite of the presence of the bugs, the average gross score continued to go down with a group average of 47.23, just about three quarters of a stroke better than last week. Twenty-four of the thirty-one players came in with a net par or better. Hole prizes were claimed by super sub Tom McAtee on #3, Sam Potts on #7, Kenny Hudson on #8 and Mike Anderson on #9. Leaders at the end of the day: Mike Bird and Richard Swayze lead Jack Lents and Jim Bateman by eleven points in Team competition; Mike Anderson and Albert Kavanaugh are thirteen and a half back. In Individual competition, Junior Byron climbed to the top with 336 points though closely followed by Richard Swayze at 335 points; Albert Kavanaugh at 327 and Virgil Harper at 319 are in third and fourth place. Of note: Charlie Sheetz and Allen Swayze saved their best for their ninth hole of the day, each of them getting pars at #2; Allen’s was his very first par of the year. It was suggested that they might want to show up a little earlier next week to play a few practice holes, like maybe eight. They both grunted something in reply, like "Oh yea, that's a great idea!"

Seniors play tomorrow - in between the raindrops

Photo: A group of golfers up from Santa Claus had a go in the gloom of an overcast day.

Yes we are hoping that we don't have to play in between the raindrops. One rainout is quite enough in a season and we had that last week. By the way, that rainout has been rescheduled for August 7th. As with last week, we'll keep a close eye on the weather and post a delay or postponement by 7:30 if there is one. Otherwise we start play at 8am. It is wet out there so bring an extra pair of socks; and your rubber ducky if you want to...

Senior League Results

The Senior League Results for event 2 are posted. Highlights

The team of Dave Brown and Ray Shaw held onto the top spot in the team competition in spite of Ray's not showing up at the golf course. Allen Swayze and Charlie Sheetz could not come up with the right combination to take down Dave in his solo efforts. Brown and Shaw, shorthanded, managed to capture 10.5 of the 14 points available in the match. In Individual competition, Junior Byron did manage to slip ahead of Dave Brown by firing a 38, good for second place in low gross, and a net 32 which tied him in the low net category; he also got the hole prize at #9. Mike Bird birdied each of the par threes, shot a 36 for the low gross, got a share of the low net with a 32 and got the hole prize on #7 with a shot that came up five inches short of being the first ace of the day. Other hole prize winners included Allen Swayze at #3 and Jack Butcher at #8 (Jack went on to play another nine holes and got his first hole-in-one on his 18th hole).

Thursday Seniors Get to Play

The Seniors have their second match of the season today starting at 9 am. Look for much better scoring with the course conditions being more favorable than they were last week.

-Low Gross: Jr Byron (40)

-Hole Prizes: John Chapman, Al Kavanaugh, Richard Swayze and Mike Bird
-Diane Bird ran one in from off #9 for a birdie and a super way to end a round

Byrons win Senior Scramble

Lakeview's Senior League started its season with a two person scramble earlier today. Though skies were again threatening, the rains did not show up as 15 golfers competed for the first blue ribbon of the new season. Pam and Junior Byron, recently returned from sunny Florida, won both low gross and low net with scores of 32 and 26.33. Vic Wallace got a hole prize for longest putt on #1, while Mike Bird, Morris Cornelius and Albert Kavanaugh got hole prizes for closest to the pins on #3, #7 and #9. Regular season competition starts for the seniors next Thursday at 9am.

Thursday's Senior Opening Scramble

Well, it's not raining yet and the chances of the weather slipping by to the west and north, as it did on Tuesday, are what - 50%? 30%? 5%? Guess we'll just have to go out and see. If it doesn't rain, here's what we'll be doing with a start time of 9am:

Notes for Thursday's League opening two person scramble:

-prizes for low gross and low net scores; team handicap will be determined by adding players' handicaps and dividing by 3 with a maximum handicap of 9 for any team.
-Hole prizes: #1 - longest 1st putt; #3, #7, #9 - closest to the pin.
-Because of the very watery conditions in fairways #6 and #8, use forward tee box on #6 (red), and for #8 go to red, white and blue tee blocks just off of #8 green.
-sand traps are closed - free drop.
-area adjacent to #7 tee box is now in play (not out of bounds); play your ball in that area without movement or penalty.
-Because of the wet conditions, there is plenty of high grass and very soggy ground where balls will hide; spend minimum time looking for lost balls - take a free drop in agreed upon vicinity.
