-John Walker reported that his enjoyment of Egypt was dampened by the need for his small group of five to be accompanied by a heavily armed guard when they went out to see the attractions. That would dampen my enjoyment as well.

Jack Butcher gets his first Hole-in-One!

Jack Butcher has been looking for his very first hole-in-one for a long time, fifty some years. On Thursday, April 24th, playing his 18th hole out at Lakeview Golf Course, his Ping Zing 8 iron hit a Top Flite XL3000 golf ball with just enough get-up-and-go to land on the green, roll about 20 feet and drop over the lip and into the hole. Bingo. The looking is over and done with. Jack was joined on his back nine following Senior League play by Rex and Kenny Hudson and Jack Lents. Jack was left speechless by his accomplishment while Rex said that he wished he had been looking. Jack Lents had an 'Oh, golly durn' as he and Rex started the hole two strokes up on Kenny and the new guy in the Lakeview Hole-in-One Club. The ace is the first one of the year at Lakeview.

Thursday Senior League

The team of Dave Brown and Ray Shaw held onto the top spot in the team competition in spite of Dave having to handle the battle all by himself. Brown, shorthanded, managed to capture 10.5 of the 14 points available in the match with the team of Allen Swayze and Charlie Sheetz. In Individual competition, Junior Byron slipped ahead of Dave by firing a 38, good for second place in low gross, and a net 32 which tied him in the low net category; he also got the hole prize at #9. Mike Bird birdied each of the par threes, shot a 36 for the low gross, shared the low net with a 32 and got the hole prize on #7. Other hole prize winners included Allen Swayze at #3 and Jack Butcher at #8.

Best scores for the day: Low net for Keith Parsons with a 29; Joe Allen came in second with a 30. Low Gross goes to Dave Wininger with a 34 while Terry Padgett came in with a 35. Hole prizes: Joe Allen, TJ McAtee, Brent Courter, and Trenton Kidwell. Phil Eyler and Charlie Lyon posted a net team score of 68 and edged Curt Johnson and Bric Parker by a score of 107 to 101 points in the 18 hole Team Tournament.

In Saturday's Manager's Scramble, Terry Butcher, TJ McAtee, Curt Johnson and Josh Huff squeaked by three other teams by a single stroke with a score of three under to take home the trophy for the day. Terry had a chip in for birdie alongwith a twenty foot putt to help capture the win. In this modified scramble where the participants played their own ball on the par threes, the winners managed to come in with a minus two on those holes while the other teams struggled with a combined six over. Tied for second with scores of two under were the teams of Dave Wininger, Mike Kidwell, Joe Allen and Tom Holt in one squad and Mark Sherer, Mike Bird and Wayne Souerdike in another. Bringing up the rear with a score at the even mark were Mark Jeffers, Trenton Kidwell and Kevin Byron. The Wininger, Kidwell, Allen and Holt team dug themselves a hole on their first two holes, giving away what in effect was four strokes with a par on #2 and a bogey/double bogey on #3; they recovered their poise and came in at five under on the remaining seven holes, including a double birdie on #7, falling one shot shy of the winners' circle. The Senior League Results for event 2 are posted. Highlights

Tuesday Men's League reports are posted. Best scores for the day:Keith Parsons, Joe Allen, Dave Wininger and Terry Padgett. Hole prizes: Joe Allen, TJ McAtee, Brent Courter, and Trenton Kidwell. Phil Eyler and Charlie Lyon posted a net team score of 68 and edged Curt Johnson and Bric Parker by a score of 107 to 101 (points) for the Team Tournament trophy. More later.

Second Event for Tuesday Men - Team Tournament Completion

Tuesday Men go for it again. Today marks the completion of the 18 hole Team Tournament with Bric Parker and Curt Johnson currently holding the top position. Last year the team of Terry Butcher and Joe Doyle came from 12 points back to win. If that is any indication, seven teams are within shooting distance of the leaders (go here to check out the standings - remember, the team with the most points in the standings after the second week is the winner). I wouldn't be surprised to see a team from way back take home the trophy.

Eric and Junior have been getting the course in shape with lots of grass being cut to smithereens. Expect much better scoring conditions today.

Manager's Scramble
Wininger-Bird-Doyle Win on Card Draw
Saturday's scramble, played under sullen skies and an occasional drop of rain, ended up with two of the three teams tied for low score. Dave Wininger, Mike Bird, and Joe Doyle won on Pam Byron's card draw with a score of 39. Mike Kidwell, Junior Byron and Noah Callahan were relegated to second place with their 39 while Tyler Kidwell, Josh Huff and Kevin Byron limped home with a 41. The scramble was played with two variations: on holes three and nine, each team member played his own ball with the low two scores counting as team score for the hole; on seven, alternate shot was used. Par for the game was 41.

Thursday Senior League
Highlights for the first match of the season
Team leaders are Dave Brown and Ray Shaw with Dave also being the leader in the Individual competition as a result of his low net of 34. The low gross went to Jr Byron with a score of 40. Low Team Net score was achieved by Jack Lents and Jim Bateman who shot an even round of 70. Hole Prizes: John Chapman, Al Kavanaugh, Richard Swayze and Mike Bird. At least one player ended their round on Thursday with a birdie: Diane Bird ran one in from just off the green at #9. Average gross for the group was 50.24, 4 to 5 strokes over what it normally is. Blame it on the weather which had been pretty lousy for golfers of any kind.

Tuesday Men's League
Some pretty high scores were posted with the average for the group up 3-4 strokes at 46.54. Several of the highlights for the first regular event of the season are: Short Jeffers holed out his very first tee shot of the season; unfortunately, he was hitting off of #1 tee box and the ball found the bottom of #9's cup. He did go on to birdie the hole. Todd Baker took 7's on #1 and #4 and still came in at 38; that means he shot two under for the other seven holes. Bric Parker returned to league play after a year of nursing his back, was worn out pretty much after seven holes, and still came in with a net 32. Mark Jones also came in with a net 32 having parred four holes, including the final three of his round. Mark Sherer continued his impressive debut in league play by claiming two of the four hole prizes, #3 and #8. Eddie Green, another newcomer to league play, and Trenton Kidwell claimed the other two hole prizes at #9 and #7. Doug Denson's 37 was the low gross of the day. Curt Johnson and Bric Parker had the low team net for the week with a round of 67; that also puts them in first place in the 18 hole team tournament that concludes with the second stroke play event of the season.

The results for the Senior League play this morning are posted on the website. Some to the highlights:

Lakeview's Fifty-Plus Senior League gets started today with its first regular season event. Match play begins at 9 o'clock this morning. Bring your clubs and your hopes and your dreams, guys and gals. And maybe your shorts as well - sunny and 74 degrees today.

Tuesday Men's Team Tournament Leaders

At the midway point in the Tuesday Men's Team Tournament, leaders are Curt Johnson and Bric Parker with a team score of 60 points. Doug Denson and Buck Holland are in second place with 58 points while the teams of Mark Sherer and Josh Huff and Dave Wininger and Mike Bird (sub for Dan Steiner) share third place with 55 points. The tournament concludes with next week's event.

Big day at Lakeview - Tuesday Men get themselves started. Would be nice if someone got a hole-in-one. Would be nice if there were a few sub par rounds. Expect a lot of rust on the course when the day is done and a group average in the low to mid 40's. Looks like Mother Nature is cooperating. Don't forget - this is event 1 as well as the first nine holes of the Team Tournament.

Tuesday Men's League
The rains were expected to start falling around three in the afternoon; then changed to around six in the evening. Sometime a little after eight, the last foursome finished up and the winners of our first opening day scramble were posted without a drop of rain coming down on the players. Give thanks to the wayward winds with their little nudge pushing the storms just west and north of us. For the record, here are the winners of the scramble and the sharpshooters who got themselves a hole prize: Low gross: the team of Mark Jeffers and Tim Voegerl turned in a score of 30 with Tim running in the longest putt on #1 and Short running in an even longer and decisive putt on #9. Five other teams posted scores of 31. Low net winners: new players in the Tuesday Men's League, Mark Sherer and Josh Huff turned in a score of 31 which translated into a net of 26.66. Two teams, the Denson/Holland team and the Jeffers/Voegerl team, tied for second in net with scores of 28. Hole Prizes went to Tim Voegerl for the longest putt on #1; Mike Kidwell, Dean Winkler and Curt Johnson got the prizes on the short holes, #3, #7 and #9. Regular season gets underway Tuesday, April 15th, with the first week of a two-week Team Tournament.

Thursday Senior League
Lakeview's Senior League started its season with a two person scramble on Thursday, the 10th of April. Though skies were again threatening, the rains did not show up as 15 golfers competed for the first blue ribbon of the new season. Pam and Junior Byron, recently returned from sunny Florida, won both low gross and low net with scores of 32 and 26.33. The team of Al Kavanaugh and Diane Bird came in second in both categories with scores of 34 and 28.67. Vic Wallace got a hole prize for longest putt on #1, while Mike Bird, Morris Cornelius and Albert Kavanaugh got hole prizes for closest to the pins on #3, #7 and #9. Regular season competition starts for the seniors Thursday, April 17th, at 9am.

Lakeview's Senior League started its season with a two person scramble earlier today. Though skies were again threatening, the rains did not show up as 15 golfers competed for the first blue ribbon of the new season. Well, it's not raining yet and the chances of the weather slipping by to the west and north, as it did on Tuesday, are what - 50%? 30%? 5%? Guess we'll just have to go out and see. If it doesn't rain, here's what we'll be doing with a start time of 9am:

-Because of the very watery conditions in fairways #6 and #8, use forward tee box on #6 (red), and for #8 go to red, white and blue tee blocks just off of #8 green.
-sand traps are closed - free drop.
-area adjacent to #7 tee box is now in play (not out of bounds); play your ball in that area without movement or penalty.
-Because of the wet conditions, there is plenty of high grass and very soggy ground where balls will hide; spend minimum time looking for lost balls - take a free drop in agreed upon vicinity.

Lakeview Golf Course News

The golf course remains soaked from the recent rains. The emergency spillways and fairways four, six and eight have been especially affected by the surplus of water and offer golfers a watery path to the greens. Play has been shortened on both #6 and #8 to allow golfers the opportunity to avoid the majority of the puddling.

Johnson, Bird and Johnson Win on Last Hole

On Saturday, April 5th, the team of Kevin Johnson, Mike Bird and Curt Johnson lost a two stroke lead at hole #7, tied up the match with pars by the Johnsons on #8, and then won on #9 when Kevin and Mike were able to get up and down for pars. Playing in very wet but mild conditions, the winners were up against the team of Dave Wininger, Mike and Trenton Kidwell, and Karry Stoll. At hole #7, Trenton Kidwell's iron shot came to rest just inches from the hole, giving him a kick-in birdie. Dave Wininger followed that with a par putt that gave their team a score of five on the hole, three better than the other guys who made a mess of things with two bogies that wiped away their two stroke lead. The scramble was again modified with each golfer playing his own ball on the par threes and also on the shortened eighth where the fairway was well spotted with rain water not knowing where to go. Though there was a stray shot or two, for the most part the golfing was much better this week. Higher temperatures probably had much to do with that.
