Lakeview Golf Course News for the week of October 27:

Kevin Byron, Curt Johnson and Mike Bird Win Super Shamble

It wasn't pretty but it was better than the others and that got the win for Kevin Byron, Curt Johnson and Mike Bird in the Saturday Super Shamble out at Lakeview. The three came in with plus two on both the par threes and the alternate shots, and one under on the scramble holes for a plus three. That was an improvement of two and three on teams who came in at plus five and plus six. Dave Strange, Dan Steiner and Dave Wininger made up one team while Mike Arvin, Joe Allen and Noah Callahan made up the third team.

Almost Even in Thursday Senior Skins Game

The cool and windy weather didn't restrain Wayne Souerdike, Dave Strange, Ray Shaw, Ken Hudson and Mike Bird from playing at Lakeview this morning. The nine hole Skins match came up even with five skins taken off the table but the final distribution was just a little askew. Kenny Hudson carded a net birdie on five and then an actual birdie on six to take two of the skins. Wayne Souerdike got a birdie on two for his skin and Dave Strange got a net birdie on seven to earn his skin. Mike Bird took the easy route on the very first hole and removed a skin with a par. Ray Shaw went home empty though he was instrumental in thwarting skins taking on holes three and nine.

Johnson, Johnson and Nolan Win on Cards

The Tuesday afternoon scramble was won by Kevin Johnson, Curt Johnson and Don Nolan with a score of five under par. They were tied by the team of Dave Wininger, George Templin and Jim Murphy who lost on the tie breaker, a card drawn by Joe Allen. Mike Bird, Joe Allen, Mark Jones and Joe Doyle came in at three under while the team of Doug Denson, Dave Strange and Tony Wease came in two under. The win by Curt and Kevin and Don was their second in a row.

Souerdike, Arvin and Arvin Win Super Shamble

Wayne Souerdike called it a "super shamble" and then joined up with brothers Mike and Doug Arvin to win the Saturday morning golf game out at Lakeview. Playing their own ball on the par threes, scrambling on the par fours and then hitting alternate shots on the par fives, the threesome finished their round at plus one. That was one better than the team of Dave Wininger, Kevin Byron and Joe Doyle; and four better that the team of Mike Bird, Joe Allen and Tony Wease. Tony, borrowing from a John Feinstein title, had only one thing to say while walking back to the clubhouse after he and his teammates flailed around the course finding zero birdies and picking up five bogeys: "That truly was a good walk spoiled."

Pam Byron's Sand Save Decisive Shot in Senior Win

Pam Byron followed a par saving five foot putt on hole #8 with a four foot putt for a sand save on #9 to propel her team to a one stroke win in the Thursday Senior game. Along with Diane Bird, Clyde Wake and Mike Bird, the team shot a plus three in the nine hole "shamble" where each golfer played his own ball on the par threes with two scores counting as the team score. The team played even par on the six scramble holes. Two other teams participated in the game: Jack Butcher, Rex Hudson and Ray Shaw got the only birdie of the day with a four on #6 but played the par threes in plus five for a final score of plus four. Junior Byron, Ken Hudson and Dave Strange also finished the day at plus four.

Johnson, Johnson, Allen and Nolan Take Tuesday Scramble

They didn't birdie either of their first two holes but ran in six in the last seven to come in at six under. And that got them the win in the Tuesday scramble. That would be Kevin Johnson, dad Curt Johnson, Joe Allen and Don Nolan who started on hole six with a disappointing par and then did the same on the short par three number seven. But from then on, everything came up roses, or went down for birdies, with the exception of a par on hole number three. Second place went to Trenton Kidwell, Mike Bird and Joe Doyle who came in at minus four. Doug Denson, Mike Breeden and George Templin came in at minus three while Dave Wininger, Rob Sterling and Jim Murphy fired a minus one on their round.

Crane Flies Plentiful at Golf Course

Had a multitude of flying insects out at the golf course this past week. The majority of them are Crane flies. Shirley Jeffers referred to them as wheat bugs but they are also know as gollywhoppers and jimmy spinners. Back when I was a youngster up in South Bend, we called them mosquito hawks. They are harmless though they did have a clumsy habit of running smack dab into our faces every whipstitch. By the end of the week, most of them had disappeared.

Rayhill, Arvin and Bird Winners in Saturday "Shamble"

The team of Tracy Rayhill, Mike Arvin and Mike Bird shot a plus one on the par threes and a minus four on the scramble holes to go low at minus three and get a win in the Saturday morning golf game at Lakeview. Tracy Rayhill used his short game with up and downs on holes three and nine and also got a twenty-five foot putt to drop on hole five to lead the charge. Three other teams competed for the prize: Dave Wininger, Joe Allen and Kevin Byron coming in at even on their round; Trenton Kidwell and dad Mike along with Gary Webb shot a plus one; and Junior Byron, Larry Hembree and Bryant Trambaugh finished with a plus two.

K of C Winners Lap Field and Then Some

Dave Wininger, Mike Arvin, Scott Wallace and Karry Stoll were the winning team at Sunday's K of C scramble at Lakeview. They shot a sterling 15 under par to rout the competition. That competition included eight other teams with the closest to the victors coming in at seven under par.

WCC Retains Tin Cup with Singles Mastery

On Wednesday, October 8th, sixteen Washington Country Club golfers overwhelmed a like number of Lakeview Golf Course golfers in the singles matches by a score of 12.5 to 3.5. That overcame a four point lead that Lakeview had opened with a 5.5 to 2.5 win in the Alternate Shot competition earlier in the day and concluded this year's fight for the Tin Cup trophy. The Lakeview golfers had come out of the October 1st games, the Scramble and the Best Ball portions of the competition, with a thin one stroke lead. For Lakeview, singles winners included Jack Butcher, Dave Strange and Ray Shaw with Bryant Trambaugh halving his match with Bob Gould. Players for the victorious WCC team included Phil Stiles, Dick Smith, Bill Summers, Dave Gingerich, Joe Catt, Bob Gould, Joris Gee, Neil Smith, Tom Doyle, Nick Nolley, Glen Stoll, Dave Carie, Steve Granger, Bill Taylor, Larry Dinkens, and Bill Joyce. Players for the Loogootee team included Mike Bird, John Chapman, George Templin, Bryant Trambaugh, Junior Byron, Morris Cornelius, Wayne Souerdike, Ward Smith, Ray Shaw, Dave Strange, Leroy Streepy, Jack Lents, Gary Webb, Vic Wallace, Jack Butcher, and Herb Roach. Byron, Potts and Johnson Triumph

Junior Byron, Greg Potts and Curt Johnson had four under on the scramble holes and a plus one on the par threes to come in at minus three and a win in the Saturday modified scramble. The scramble ('shamble', as it is known in some circles) was played under beautiful Fall skies and a field that included three other teams. Two teams finished one stroke back: Mike Bird, Larry Hembree, Kevin Byron and Tony Wease; and Dave Wininger, Mike Arvin, Joe Allen and Joe Doyle. Coming in at plus one was Wayne Souerdike, Karry Stoll, Bryant Trambaugh and Gary Webb. The Wininger team had the most birdies on the scramble holes at five while the victorious Byron team along with the Bird team tied for the low scores on the par threes at plus one.

Tin Cup Challenge Results Week 1

Sixteen golfers from Washington Country Club were at Lakeview last Thursday to engage in the second year of The Tin Cup Challenge. They took on sixteen golfers from Lakeview Golf Course in a local version of the Ryder Cup. In this week's matches, the WCC eight two person teams played the LGC golfers even in the Scramble format, four matches won on each side. In the Best Ball matches, the Lakeview players came out ahead by winning four and tying a fifth. Hole prizes were won by George Templin, Leroy Streepy, Neil Smith and Joe Catt. The Lakeview Golf Course crew will take a slim one point lead into the Alternate Shot and Single matches that will complete the challenge this Thursday at the Washington Country Club. Tuesday Scramble Winners

Two different scrambles were held at the golf course last Tuesday: In the first one, a two person handicapped modified scramble was won by Greg Potts and Tracy Rayhill with a net score of 42.67. Three other twosomes participated with net scores ranging from 43.67 to 46.33. In the second, the Denson pick-up scramble was won by the team of Terry Butcher, David Strange, Scott Arthur and Mark Jones with a score of 31. Byron, Allen and Stoll Win Saturday Scramble

The team of Junior Byron, Joe Allen and Karry Stoll used birdies on five of the nine holes to offset a couple of bogeys on #7 to come in with a score of minus three. That gave them a one shot victory in the Saturday morning modified scramble at Lakeview. Mike Bird, Mike Arvin, Curt Johnson and Gary Webb saw their dreams of a victory slide away with a couple of bogeys of their own at hole #9 which erased a couple of nifty birdies by Curt and Gary at #7. Wayne Souerdike, Jack Butcher and Bryant Trambaugh also found a bogey at #9 which dropped them one shot off the pace. Fourth place went to the team of Larry Hembree, Noah Callahan, Jack Lents and Kevin Byron who came in at plus two.

Seniors Play to a Tie

A Junior Byron led team scratched out a tie with a Mike Bird led team this past Thursday with each side scoring 2.5 points. Twenty-two players joined in a game which had the golfers playing best ball, scramble and alternating shot over the nine hole game. Junior, Wayne Souerdike and Clyde Wake lost their match to Mike Bird, John Chapman and Pam Byron by a score of 38-36. Byron teammates Kenny Hudson and Dave Brown handled Jack Lents and Rex Hudson, 39-42 but Dave Strange and Ray Shaw lost to Denny Wagoner and Leroy Streepy, 40-41. Diane Bird and Wilma Bateman, playing for the Byron side, tied Kim Jones and Susie Chanley, 43-43. Golfers from the Washington area and participants in the upcoming Tin Cup Challenge, Larry Dinkens, Dave Gingerich, Phil Stiles and Tom Doyle, joined in on the fun with the Byron guys. Dinkens and Gingerich beat up on the Bird guys, Stiles and Doyle, by a score of 38-40. Each match was worth one point and that made it all even at 2.5 points apiece.

Brothers Tyler and Trenton Kidwell Win Post Season Game #3

Brothers Tyler and Trenton Kidwell shot both the low gross (32) and the low net (30.33) in the third post season game at Lakeview today. Second place went to last week's winners, TJ McAtee and Ryan Johnson, who came in with a net of 32 after finishing with a gross of 36. Fourteen two person teams competed in the nine hole handicapped game that had golfers playing Best Ball on the par threes, a Scramble on the par fours, and Alternate Shot on the par fives.

St. John's Youth Scramble

Bryant Ackerman, Tyler Jacobs and Curt Johnson were the winners of a Sunday afternoon scramble at Lakeview. The St. John's high schoolers were accompanied by parents and friends in the outing. The Ackerman/Jacobs/Johnson team came in with a score of one under which was just enough to beat two teams who came in at even par: Clinton Burch, Luke Jones, Mollie Jones and TJ McAtee; and Jennifer Clark, Hannah LaMar, Wynter Wagoner and Alan Burch. The team of Jared Butcher, Terry LaMar and Shirley Jeffers came in at plus two. Alayna Coy kept the group in cold drinks as the Beverage Cart girl. Hole prize winners were Wynter Wagoner, Jennifer Clark, Luke Jones and Bryant Ackerman.

Johnson, Hembree and Bird Dominant

In the Saturday Modified Scramble, the team of Curt Johnson, Larry Hembree and Mike Bird shot a three under to dominate the teams of Wayne Souerdike, Bryant Trambaugh and Kevin Byron at +7, and Tyler Kidwell, Jeff Doyle, Joe Doyle and Gary Webb at +3. The victors played even on the par threes with both Mike Bird and Curt Johnson getting the hat trick (pars on each of them), and Larry Hembree being instrumental on the scramble holes, driving #2 which led to an easy two putt birdie, and also running in a 12 foot putt for birdie on #5. The other two teams played the scramble holes at -2 and -3 but found disaster waiting for them at each of the par threes, playing them at +9 and +6.

Byron, Butcher, Wagoner, Shaw and Bird Triumph

The Senior game this past Thursday was a Scramble/Best Ball/Alternate Shot affair that was won by the Black Team over the Red Team. In this game, the golfers played their own ball on the par threes, a scramble on the par fours, and alternating shot on the par fives. Mike Bird and Rex Hudson went out against Junior Byron and Jack Butcher and played to a tie, 48 to 48. The remaining three players of the Red team, Kenny Hudson, Clyde Wake and Pam Byron, failed to match the sterling play of Denny Wagoner, Ray Shaw and Diane Bird who triumphed, 49 to 55. Total team score favored the Black Team, 97 to 103.

Post Season play at Lakeview - Event 1

On Tuesday, September 16th, the first post league season event was held. The two person handicapped scramble was won by TJ McAtee and Ryan Johnson who closed with birdies on the 8th and 9th hole for a net score of 28 and a one stroke win over the team of Terry Padgett and Gary Burris. Three teams shared the low gross at 32: TJ McAtee and Ryan Johnson, Terry Butcher and Mark Jones, and Terry Padgett and Gary Burris.

Junior Byron and Joe Allen Win Scramble in OT

The Saturday Morning Scramble went into overtime when Junior Byron and Joe Allen parred the ninth hole while Wayne Souerdike and Larry Hembree could manage only a bogey. The two teams were tied at even par going into the first extra hole where both Joe Allen and Larry Hembree sank birdie putts of over ten feet. Hole number three became the second playoff hole and each of the four played their own ball and missed the green from the tee. Byron's chip came the closest to the cup at some five feet and he waited patiently as each of the other three missed their par putts. He then very calmly ran the deciding putt into the hole for the victory. A third team, Mike Bird and Karry Stoll, started off with a bogey, added two more at the third hole and shot blanks the rest of the way to finish at three over and out of the playoff picture.

Senior Flighted Tournament

The Senior Flighted Tournament had some dominating performances in the final nine holes played this past Thursday. In the most dominant of them all, Pam Byron ran away from Clyde Wake by a full ten strokes on the day to win the F Flight by a score of 111 to 122. JD Faris had a good nine holes at 45 to best his closest competition in the E Flight, Dick Barber, by five strokes on the day and that gave him a come from behind victory, 96 to 100. In the most competitive race, Dave Strange started the day tied with Ray Shaw in D Flight and ended it with a round of 43 , two strokes better than Ray's 45. Final score in D Flight: 90 to 92. In the C Flight, Ken Hudson's round of 42 bested his closest competitiors, brother Rex and Richard Swayze who each shot 44's on the day. Ken won the Flight with a total score of 88 over the 91's posted by Rex and Richard. John Chapman dominated B Flight, firing a super 36 on the day and taking the trophy by nine strokes over second place finisher Jack Butcher, 75 to 84. Mike Bird used consecutive birdies on four, five and six to highlight a second straight round of 33 to distance himself from fellow competitors Junior Byron and Mike Anderson who shot 37's on the day. That gave Mike a final score of 66, a seven stroke advantage over Junior and Mike's 73's. Hole prizes for the event were collected by long putters Jim Bateman and Dave Brown, and by sharpshooters Junior Byron and Mike Bird. A pitch-in lunch followed play.

Tuesday Men's League

The Tuesday Men's League Wrap: The season came to a close with all sorts of surprises, the biggest the Rob Sterling/Jim Murphy ascension to the top of the Team standings. Rob shot a 'sterling' 39, his best ever, and Jim shot a 43 to give them a net team score of 64 and just enough points on the night to catch and pass the leaders at the start of the day, Terry Padgett and Gary Burris. And that by a slim margin of one point. Over in the Individual competition, Noah Callahan won it all with a round of 41, but he was caught in the Flighted Tournament as both Bryant Trambaugh (39) and Chris Bledsoe (36) finished with 77's to Noah's 78. Phil Eyler's low gross round of 32, which included the only eagle of the day, got him a tie for second in the A Flight with James Hager at 70. Short Jeffers' 36 and his first round 32 gave him a 68 for the tournament and the top spot. Tyler Kidwell shot a round of 35 and that enabled him to catch Junior Byron (39) in the B Flight; the two of them finished with 18 hole scores of 72. In D Flight, Mike Smith almost caught first round leader Charlie Lyon; they shot a 41 and a 42 to come in at 79 and 78 for the top two spots in that Flight; Mark Jones' 45 dropped him to third with a total score of 81. In E Flight, Curt Johnson followed his first round score of 38 with a second round score of 45 and that was just enough to squeak out a win over the hard charging Rob Sterling who finished with that previously mentioned 39 and an 18 hole score of 84. In F Flight, Richie Green shot his best ever round at 44, found a birdie and a hole prize on the last hole, and dominated his flight with a score of 93 and a six stroke advantage over second place finisher Keith Parsons. Joining Richie Green at low net for the day was Kevin Byron who shot a gross 40; the two of them finished with net 28's. James Hager's 34 was second low gross score to Phil Eyler's 32. The low net team score of the event was shot by Trenton Kidwell and Chris Bledsoe; their rounds of 35 and 36 translated into a nifty net team score of 62. Seven golfers had two birdies on the day: John Walker, Trenton Kidwell, Junior Byron, Mark Sherer, Short Jeffers, James Hager and Phil Eyler. Joining Richie Green in claiming hole prizes were John Drake, Chris Bledsoe and Jason Rominger.

Denson, Dalrymple and Allen Shine on Scramble Holes

In the Saturday modified scramble, Doug Denson, Brent Dalrymple and Joe Allen shot a super five under on the scramble holes to offset a pedestrian three over on the par threes to take the trophy with a score of two under. Finishing second a stroke behind were Junior Byron, Larry Hembree, Curt Johnson and Joe Doyle. In third place was the team of Wayne Souerdike, Jeff Doyle and Gary Arvin at an even par. Mike Bird, Kevin Byron and Jack Lents brought in the caboose in spite of an eagle start on hole four where Kevin did the driving and Jack rolled in one from just off the green; they shot one over for the nine holes.

Seniors' Flighted Tournament

Some low scores posted in the first nine holes of the Flighted Tournament in spite of the threatening weather and the slowed down fairways (over night rain!). Mike Bird led the way with a sterling 33 which included birdies at four and nine and seven pars. The three other A Flight golfers did pretty well also with Junior Byron and Mike Anderson firing 36's and Al Kavanaugh coming in with a 37. In the B Flight, Dave Brown and John Chapman went low with a 38 and a 39 and lead the other contenders by several strokes. In the most closely contested Flight, the C Flight, Rex and Ken Hudson shot 46's and lead Richard Swayze and Morris Cornelius by a single stroke and Leroy Streepy by just two. Dave Strange finds himself in the lead in the D Flight by a single stoke over Ray Shaw. In a second pretty close battle, E Flight has Dick Barber, with a round of 50, leading JD Faris by a single stoke; he's up by two strokes over Diane Bird and Patty Bowling. Pam Byron leads Clyde Wake by two strokes in the F Flight. Claiming hole prizes were Leroy Streepy and Rex Hudson with long putts, and John Chapman and Mike Bird with close to the pin shots. The final nine holes is scheduled to kick off next Thursday, September 11th, with a 9am start and conclude with a lunch and awards presentation which will follow play. In the final match of the four week playoffs, Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson played even with Al Kavanaugh and Mike Anderson in the match play, each team getting 4.5 points. But Al and Mike bested Jack and Rex in the low net team score by a score of 66 to 69. Bragging rights go to the boys from Montgomery.

The Tuesday Boyz Club played at Lakeview this past Tuesday: 1st: Tony Burnside, Junior Byron, Danny Thomas, Jerry Robinson and Jim Henry with a score of 91 which included +12 on the par threes where four of five scores counted. 2nd: Mike Bird, Mike Anderson, Jack Butcher, John Chapman and Ray Shaw with a score of 94 and that included plus 15 on the par threes.

Tim Voegerl using body english to help his putt go into the hole at #4 during the Tuesday Men's League. To no avail - the ball had a mind of its own this time.

Tuesday Men Results

Mike Smith followed last week's 36 with a 38 that included birdies on #2 and #6; his net score was 31. The team of Mark Jones and Mike Albertson shot a net 62 with Mark's 36 gross and 29 net leading the way; Mike shot a 40 gross and a net 33. Each of them birdied #7 while Mark birdied #9 as well. Skip Ackerman gave away three strokes on the last two holes and still shot a super 38. Playing with Skip and doing an even better job was Charlie Lyon who shot a 36 and made a 'clean sweep' of the extras that the two of them along with John Walker and Phil Eyler play for each week. Charlie's 36 translates into a 27 net. Bryant Trambaugh slam dunked a shot from behind #8 green for an eagle on #2 and came in with a 38. Buck Holland also found an eagle, his on #5, in a round of 40. Junior Byron started with four fours and finished with three threes and a round of 33 which included birdies on four, five and eight. Short Jeffers left several birdies on the table and still came in with a 32, a round that included birdies at two, four, six and nine. The Wrap: Low scores for the next to last outing of the season were turned in by Charlie Lyon and Curt Johnson in the net category with 27's. Short Jeffers went low in gross with a 32 while Junior Byron came in with a 33. Low net team score was a 61 shot by Curt Johnson and Bric Parker. Hole prizes were taken by Mike Kidwell on #3 and #8, Mike Albertson on #7 and Short Jeffers on #9. Leaders in the standings remain Noah Callahan in the Individual competition and Terry Padgett and Gary Burris in the Team competition. In the season ending Flighted Tournament, leaders after the first nine holes are: Short Jeffers (A) with a 32, Junior Byron (B) with a 33, Noah Callahan (C) with a 37, Mark Jones and Charlie Lyon (D) with 36's, Curt Johnson (F) with a 38, and Richie Green and Don Nolan (G) with 49's. Lots of great scores posted during this event. Guess the golfers like those August fairways. Or was it the heat? Mark Jones said he got to the point of thinking more about the heat and not so much about his shot making. Paid dividends for him with his best ever round of 36. And Junior Byron shot a 33 after playing 18 holes with the Tuesday Boyz in the morning. Charlie Lyon with his own 36 was all smiles after showing John Walker, Skip Ackerman and Phil Eyler a thing or two about golf. Skip did much better than he thought he would with his 38. The Tuesday Men had way too much fun on a sultry early September afternoon.

Lents and Wallace Lead Scramble Win

In the Saturday Morning Manager's Scramble, the C and D team of Jack Lents and Vic Wallace shot an even par to trounce by three strokes the team of Curt Johnson and Bryant Trambaugh. Meanwhile, their AB partners Mike Bird and Kevin Byron held Chuck Baker and Junior Byron at bay, each team coming in at 34. That gave the Lents/Wallace/K.Byron/Bird team a combined score of 69 to a 72 for the Johnson/Trambaugh/Baker/

JrByron team. The group played the par threes unusually well with ten pars and only two bogeys.

Senior League Results

Senior League results are posted. Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh completely dominated the daggerless team of Jack Lents and Jim Bateman, 12-2, to win the Gold Flight in the playoffs. In the Black Flight, Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson beat the stand-in team of Jack Nickless and Morris Cornelius, 11-3, to win in that flight. The two flight winners will meet next Thursday to determine the overall champion of the playoffs. In this regular season finale, the excellent play of Al Kavanaugh and Mike Anderson allowed them to slip into first place in the Team standings to win by half a point over the Mike Bird/Richard Swayze team who were trashed by Diane Bird and Wilma Bateman, 11.5 to 2.5. Al, with a sterling round of 36 also vaulted over Mike Bird in the Individual standings to claim the season trophy in that competition. The Wrap: Low scores were turned in by Bob Norris with a nifty low net of 26. Clyde Wake and Dave Strange were tied for second with 30's. Team low net was 58 by Bob Norris and Leroy Streepy. Low gross scorer was Al Kavanaugh at 36 while his partner Mike Anderson got second with a 38. Hole prizes were claimed by Dave Brown and Ray Shaw on the long putts and by Dave Brown and Jack Nickless on the close shots to the pins. Only two birdies on the day, those found by Dave Brown on #6 and Wayne Pearl on #9. The average gross score for the group dropped a bunch: from 46.97 to 45.59. An amazing 24 of the 29 golfers shot net par or better on the day. The Senior League now turns to the season ending Individual Flighted Tournament over the next two Thursdays. This is an open tournament and area senior golfers are welcome to come out and join in the fun.

Tuesday Men Results

The Wrap: Golfers found the fairways pretty hard for Tuesday's event and that meant long drives off the tees. For some, that turned into birdie time. Four golfers found three birdies in their rounds yesterday: Trenton Kidwell, Phil Eyler, Short Jeffers and Mark Sherer. Another seven found two birdies: Steven Downey, Mike Kidwell, Tyler Kidwell, Terry Butcher, Doug Denson, Chris Bledsoe and Mike Bird. That was a large part of the reason the average gross score dropped to 41.04 from 42.82. Hole prizes were claimed by Jason Rominger, Steven Downey and Chris Bledsoe on the closest-to-the-pin shots while John Drake ran a long putt in on #8. The daily 'Go-for-it' contest prizes were won by Mike Breeden on #4 and Steven Downey on #5. The overall winners in that contest are Tom McAtee at #4 and Mark Sherer at #5. Low scores for the event: low net at 28 was Charlie Lyon with Curt Johnson and Mike Smith tied for second at 29. Low net team with a 60 was shot by last year's team champions, Keith Parsons and Bill Carrico. Low gross was turned in by Trenton Kidwell with a 33 with Doug Denson's 34 taking second place. No change at the top as Noah Callahan leads Jim Murphy by 37 points in the Individual race. Terry Padgett and Gary Burris hold on to first in the Team standings with a scant nine point lead over Rob Sterling and Jim Murphy and a twenty-seven point lead over the third place team of Todd Baker and Noah Callahan. Other notes: Mike Smith missed his first par round ever by getting a double bogey on nine but still finished with his best ever round, a 36; that's a net 29 for Mike. Trenton Kidwell had himself a pretty good round by finding birds at four, six and seven; he finished with a gross 33, a personal best, and a net 30. Eddie Green played without brother Richie who just became a papa again for the third time, a second baby boy. Charlie Lyons had an exceptional round, a 40 which included an 8 on #5; that's a net 28 for Charlie. Phil Eyler had to get three birdies to offset three bogeys on one, two and three and a fourth at #7 in a round of 36. The leader of the pack, Noah Callahan, chipped in one on three for a birdie and went on to shoot 37, a net 31. John Drake continued his hot shooting, bringing in a round of 41 gross, net 32, and that was after opening with a triple bogey. Doug Denson broke into the sub par figures with a round of 34 that included consecutive birdies on holes five and six.

Joe Potts and Mike Arvin go low to seal scramble victory

Joe Potts and Mike Arvin played the C and D positions in a foursome that included Dave Wininger and Larry Hembree in the Saturday morning modified scramble. The four, playing in different groups, shot a combined score of 66 to snatch victory by one stroke over the team of Greg Potts, Mike Bird, Joe Allen and Jack Lents. Potts and Arvin shot three stokes better than any other C/D twosome, making up the two shot deficit that Wininger and Hembree had against other A/B twosomes. The scramble was modified to a second degree as the A and B players went out in foursomes that included other A and B players, and the C and D players did the same. The golfers played their own ball on the par threes with the low score counting as the team score. The results: 1st: score: 66 - Dave Wininger and Larry Hembree (32)/Joe Potts and Mike Arvin (34); 2nd: score: 67 - Mike Bird and Greg Potts (30)/Joe Allen and Jack Lents (37); 3rd: score: 68 - Terry Butcher and Tyler Kidwell (30)/Kevin Byron, Gary Webb and Dan Henning (38); and 4th: score: 71 - Tyler Walton and Wayne Souerdike (31)/Karry Stoll and Bryant Trambaugh (40).

Senior League: Daggers to the heart

Jim Bateman gave away four strokes on the first hole and Jack Lents gave away an equal number on the last two holes but they still came away with a win over the #1 team of Mike Bird and Richard Swayze. The #3 seeded team managed to do it with three deadly daggers to the heart: a 12 foot chip in by Jack on #5 for a birdie, a 20 foot roll in from off the green for par on #8 by Jim, and finally a 30 foot chip in from the fluffly surround on #9 for a birdie, again by Jim. Those three shots created a six and a half point swing in the match and gave the two of them a resounding 11-3 win in the match to advance to the championship round in the Black Flight. Joining them in that round will be Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh who easily handled the team of Diane Bird and Wilma Bateman, 10-4. Over in the Gold Flight, Charlie Sheetz and Jack Nickless advanced the Sheetz and Swayze team to the championship by trouncing the team of Dick Barber and John Chapman, 10.5 to 3.5. That team will be going up against Jack Butcher and Rex Husdon who beat Leroy Streepy and Bob Norris, 10-4.

In other highlights of the second-to-last regular season event: Low net team score was turned in by Dave Strange and Clyde Wake, a sterling 63. Low net score was shot by Dave Strange with a five under par; Pam Byron was second with four under. Low gross was shot by Mike Bird with a 36; Al Kavanaugh turned in a 37 for second place. Birdies were found by Jack Lents on #5, Al Kavanaugh on #6, and Jim Bateman and Dave Brown on #9. Hole prizes were claimed by Dave Brown and Vic Wallace with long putts on #1 and #4; and by Al Kavanaugh and Jack Butcher with close-to-the-pin shots on #7 and #9. Leaders with one event to go are: Richard Swayze and Mike Bird in Team with 156.5 points; Jack Lents and Jim Bateman are in second with 149.5 points with Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh in third with 147.5 points. In Individual play, Mike Bird leads with 619 points with Al Kavanaugh in second with 598 points. Jack Lents is in third place with 555 points. Average gross score for the group improved about half a stroke from the previous week at 46.97.

Tuesday Men Results

The Wrap: At day's end, the leaders in Team remained the same with Terry Padgett and Gary Burris on top with 697 points. Jim Murphy and Rob Sterling are second with 676 points and Todd Baker and Noah Callahan are in third with 670 points. Noah regained the top position in Individual at 1304 points while last week's leader, Jim Murphy, slipped to second at 1285 points. Kevin Byron, Bryant Trambaugh and Buck Holland round out the top five. Hole prize winners were Kevin Byron, Warren Atkison and Curt Johnson with long putts; John Drake, Terry Padgett and Bric Parker with close to the pins; and Bric Parker and Mike Kidwell at #4 and #5 in the Go-for-it contests. Low net team score was turned in by Dave Wininger and Dan Steiner with a score of 62. Low net individuals were John Drake at 27 and Tim Voegerl at 28. Low gross score leaders were James Hager and Dave Wininger at 34. Notes from the golf course: Mark Jones brought in a card seven strokes off of last week's 39 but was very happy with his drive on #5 – happened to hit the cart path and roll a mile – he put his name down on the long drive prize marker. Noah Callahan shot a 38 and was very happy with that; his playing partner, Todd Baker, playing without a rider this week, went south with a score plus thirteen over the 34 he turned in just seven days ago. Gary LaMar and Virgil played early and had superior rounds – Gary a 43 gross and a net 30, Virgil a 46 gross and a net 34. That's a pretty good team score of 64. John Drake got himself another sub 40 round, a 39; that's a net 27. Tracy Rayhill was happier with his round of 41 which included birds on the long holes. Buck Holland came close to getting an eagle on #4 but his six foot putt wouldn't fall into the cup. Brent Courter had a round of 41 gross and 29 net and a birdie on #7. Terry Padgett shot a 37, a net 32, and got his shot at #7 six inches closer to the hole than up-to-then hole prize winner Brent Courter. He also made the putt for birdie. Playing partner Gary Burris played his consistent old self, firing a 41 and a net 35. Kevin Byron started with a putting bomb on #1, some 40 plus feet, went on to get four more pars before coming down to earth and finished the last five holes with a plus eight to come in with a 43 gross and a net 34. Playing partner and dad, Junior, shot a 38 with a net 34. Another father/son combo faired rather well as well: Tyler Kidwell shot a 36 with an eagle on #2 and a birdie on #8 while dad Mike shot a 37 with a birdie on #4. The nets: a 32 and a 33 for a super team net of 65. James Hager found out he could chip one in the hole on command; his approach shot on #6 came to rest just off the back side and it was suggested that he just chip it in for his birdie. He did just that in a round of 34 that included a birdie at #4 as well. Tim Voegerl got his first eagle ever at #2 with a putt from just off the green that traveled a good twenty feet; he also found a birdie on #5, missed two or three short putts and came in with a nifty round of 39 which translates to a super net of 28. Playing partner Warren Atkison also did well on #2, finding a birdie in a round of 42. Dave Wininger and teammate Dan Steiner shot a net 62 as a team. Dave found birdies on the long holes and shot a 34; Dan shot a more than solid 42 which translated to a net 30. Fives are wild on Scott Arthur's scorecard: he ran off seven fives in a row before finishing with a four and a three for a round of 42, net 33.

Ward Smith Ignites Amazing Comeback

Faced with a plus five after two holes on the scorecard, Ward Smith took matters into his own hands during the modified Lakeview scramble this Saturday morning. Ward, Tyler Walton, Noah Callahan and Mike Arvin started with a par on hole #2 then went way south with a bogey-double bogey-double bogey on hole #3. Not to worry after Tyler's drive on #4 put them within 170 yards of the hole: Ward knocked his approach to six foot and then made the putt for a desperately needed eagle. The still-down-by-three foursome then found birdies on each of the next four holes to get to one under. That included a birdie by Noah Callahan on #7 and a ten foot putt for birdie on #8 by Mike Arvin. Pars on the final two holes brought them to the clubhouse with a winning score. The team of Mike Bird, Greg Potts and Gary Arvin went into their last hole at one under but then shot themselves out of contention with a plus two on #9. Wayne Souerdike, Karry Stoll, Joe Allen and Kevin Byron also entered the last hole in minus figures but finished with a plus four on the hole to end at plus two for the day. Call it an amazing comeback and a couple of last hole meltdowns.

Community League Season Ends, Missy Kneip Big Winner

Community League Highlights

Missy Kneip and partner Cam Sheetz closed out the Community League season with a pair of sterling 44's to seal their position on top of the Team standings with a total of 229 points. Their net score of 60 let them squeak out a three point victory over the fast closing team of Mike Arvin and Scott Schutte. Mike shot his best ever round of 37 and dropped in an eagle putt of six feet on hole #4 in a last gasp attempt to get to the top. Third place went to a couple of guys heading back to college, Kent Summers and Noah Callahan; they came in with a final total of 222 points. In Individual play, newcomer Missy Kneip ended the season right where she spent a lot of it, in first place. She finished with a total of 492 points, easily outdistancing Noah Callahan (458), Mike Arvin (439) and Jim Hart (417). Other highlights of this last week's play: Richard Swayze finished his season with a birdie on #9 and a round of 44 while Lucas Bird ended his with a gross 47 and a nifty net 32. Tarry Bratton and Karry Stoll each shot sterling 42's with Tarry's a net 30 and Karry's a net 32 to post the second lowest net team score for the week, a 62. Individual low net scores for the week went to Missy Kneip overall and in Women with a 28; Richard Swayze in Senior with a 34; and Mike Arvin in Men with a 28. Low gross scoring honors were claimed by Missy in Women with her 44; in Senior, Bob Walton had a 43; and in Men, a tie between Mike Arvin and Tyler Walton with their 37's. Mike Arvin and Missy Kneip share the round-of-the-week honors with their double low scores in gross and net. In the Team Tournament that covered the final two weeks of the season, Tarry Bratton and Karry Stoll posted a net score of 17 under par to narrowly beat out Kim Jones and Kay Sheetz who came in with a score of 16 under. The Sheetz/Kneip team finished third with 11 under while the Arvin/Schutte team came in fourth at 10 under.

Senior League Highlights

The Senior League started its last three weeks of the regular season in playoffs that paired teams 1-8 in the standings in a Gold flight and teams 9-16 in the standings in a Black flight. At the end of play, all the higher ranked teams with the exception of one advanced in the winners bracket. There were some squeakers. Dave Brown and Ray Shaw, the number 8 team in the Gold flight, took Mike Bird and Richard Swayze, the number one team, to the edge before falling by a single point, 7.5 to 6.5. In another squeaker, the undermanned Wayne Pearl, playing by himself against Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson, barely lost in a 6 point to 8 point match. In the only match that saw a lower ranked team triumph over a higher ranked team, Leroy Streepy and Joe Doyle, taking the place of Sam Potts and Bob Norris, took the measure of Ken Hudson and Carroll Rayhill, 12 to 2. Other winners included: Diane Bird and Wilma Bateman over Dave Strange and Clyde Wake, 11.5 to 2.5; Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh over Pam Byron and June Eckerle, 9.5 to 5.5; Charlie Sheetz, all by himself, over Bob Elliot and JD Faris, 7.5 to 6.5; and Dick Barber and John Chapman over Vic Wallace and Ward Smith, 10.5 to 3.5. All teams advance to the second round next Thursday, eight into the winners bracket and the other eight into the other bracket.

Hole prizes for the day were claimed by long putters Jim Bateman (#1) and Dick Barber (#4), and sharpshooters Mike Anderson (#7) and Jack Lents (#9). Leroy Streepy had the low net score of the day with a nifty 30 while Jack Lents and Jim Bateman tied for second with 32's. Those 32's got the Lents/Bateman team the low team score of the day, a 64. Low gross for the day was shot by Mike Bird with a 36; Mike Anderson, with three birdies in his round, had a 37. Other players gathering in birds were Diane Bird at #7, Jack Lents at #9, Al Kavanaugh at #2 and Mike Bird at #3. The average gross score for the event was 47.47, down .3 of a stroke from last week's average. In the standings, Richard Swayze and Mike Bird continue to lead in Team play though Lents and Bateman at 138.5 points and Kavanaugh and Anderson at 137.5 points closed the gap a little bit. In Individual play, Mike Bird at 591 points extended his lead over second place Al Kavanaugh by 9 points. Al's second place total is 550 points with Jack Lents in third at 518 points.

Tuesday Boyz Club at Lakeview

On Tuesday, August 12th, the Tuesday Boyz Club played a modified scramble with all golfers playing their own ball on the par threes. Three low scores counted as the team score. And those par threes played havoc with each of the three teams out for the fun and games. The results with the par three score following the total:

2nd CV Burgess, Jim Henry, Jack Butcher and Phil Culver: 0 and +6

Tuesday Men Results

The wrap: Low net scores for the day belonged to Charlie Lyon with a 28 and Tim Voegerl with a 29. Terry Butcher turned in the low gross score, a 33, with Todd Baker and Dave Wininger also going low with 34's. Low net team score at 63 was turned in by two teams: Dave Wininger and Dan Steiner along with Tim Voegerl and Warren Atkison. Hole prizes were claimed by Dan Steiner, Tyler Kidwell and James Hager with long putts; and Trenton Kidwell and Dave Wininger (twice) with close to the pin shots. The 'Go-for-it' contest leaders after the first week (it's a three week contest) are Tom McAtee at #4. His shot came to rest about two feet from the barrel some 180 yards from the tee box. Mark Sherer put one just over ten feet from the pin at #5, some 300 yards from the tee box. At the close of play, leaders in the standings are Todd Baker and Noah Callahan with 660 points in the Team competition. Mark Sherer and Josh Huff are breathing down their necks just eight points back. Jim Murphy jumped to the top of the Individual standings with 1201 points; last week's leader, Noah Callahan, is a scant five points back in second place. Bryant Trambaugh is in third with 1163 points. Average gross score for the event was 42.97, just a bit higher than the previous week. Other comments and highlights: Tracy Rayhill finished with a birdie on #9, even had a par on #7, but didn't much like the rest of the story - he finished with a 47. Eddie Green found a birdie on #2 and shot seven strokes better than his round for last week; he brought in a 41 gross and a net 32. Tom McAtee, playing early, apparently took the 'Go-for-it' contest very seriously; his tee shot on #4 came to rest within a couple of feet from the barrel some 180 yards down the fairway. Now he has to wait another two weeks to see if it will hold up. Mark Jones had himself a pretty good day at the golf course and would have done a bunch better if he hadn't given away three strokes on the last two holes. Mark shot a gross 39, a net 32. 'Ace' Ackerman followed his hole-in-one round of a week ago with a round of 38 though he did manage to bogey #7 (where he got his ace). Charlie Lyon had an excellent round of 41 which included going one over for the last six holes; the 41 translates to a very nifty 28 net. Playing partner Phil Eyler, who was one of many getting back to school this week, had a dismal day at the golf course, firing a 40 with a plus one handicap; that would be a net 41. Ouch. Another ouch goes to Steven Downey who found himself one under after two but then finished with a not so nice plus ten over the last seven holes to come in at 44. Terry Butcher was even after three but then eagled four and birdied seven and nine; add a few bogies to the mix and call it a sterling round of 33. Playing partner Joe Doyle did a-ok for himself, coming in with a gross 45 and a net 34. Rob Sterling likes his trend line: 46, 45, and now a 44, the last his best nine holes of the season. Chad Wade subbed for the recently retired George Templin and shot a super 41 gross and a net 30; could have been better except for a triple bogey on 'crazy' hole #8. Tim Voegerl had himself a pretty good round, a 40 which included a birdie on #5; that would be a net 29. Playing partner Warren Atkison got a couple of birdies in his round of 42, one on #4 and one on #7. Jack Divine brought a friend to ride along with him; she must have inspired him – he shot a 44 gross and a net 32. His playing partner, Short Jeffers, had birdies on two and four but plus four on the other holes to come in with a 37. Mark Sherer, back from surgery, hit a monster drive on #5 and is the current leader in the 'Go for it' contest at that hole. His ball stopped 10'11.5"s from the pin. He also birdied #2, #5 and #7 in a round of 36. Brent Dalrymple, filling in for Josh Huff, shot a 41 gross and a 32 net (he also subbed for Josh in the August 5th rain event and shot his best ever round, a 37). Todd Baker also had a rider and she provided inspiration as well. Todd had a round of 34 with three birdies, one at #2, and the other two at #8 and #9. Dave Wininger closed well, too. He found a bird and a hole prize at #7, and then picked up the hole prize on #9; his round of 34 was pretty nice, too.

Holy Dandelions! Skip Ackerman gets an Ace

Skip Ackerman, nearing the golden age of 67, hit a towering shot into #7 on a rainy Tuesday Men's League afternoon, watched as it hit about eighteen inches in front of the cup and then trickle into the hole. "Holy dandelions!" he exclaimed. "My first hole-in-one!" Playing partners Phil Eyler, John Walker and Charlie Lyon stood around and cheered him in his new found status as a Lakeview Ace. Skip used a King Cobra gap wedge and hit a Pinnacle Gold FX Long ball over the hundred yards from tee to cup. Nice shot and hole dandelions indeed, Skip!

Doyle, Hembree, Kidwell and Kidwell Triumph in Scramble

They finished three under over the last two holes to steal a win. That would be the scramble team of Jeff Doyle, Larry Hembree, and father and son Mike and Tyler Kidwell. The foursome found magic late to take the Saturday morning scramble. Tyler Kidwell started the rally by finding a birdie all by himself on hole #8. The other three took care of the last hole: Jeff Doyle made a nifty up and down for par from behind the sand trap; and Mike Kidwell and Larry Hembree both made three foot putts for birdies. That gave them a final score of two under which was one stroke up on any other team. At one under was the team of Mike Bird, Greg Potts, Bryant Trambaugh and Gary Arvin. Strong putting by Greg Potts and a long putt by Mike Bird for birdie at #9 weren't quite enough to offset a bogey at #1 and a plus one score on #9. At even par was the team of Dave Wininger, Wayne Souerdike, Karry Stoll and Kevin Byron. At plus five on the day was the team of Doug Denson, Junior Byron, Mike Arvin and Joe Doyle. This was a modified scramble with golfers playing their own ball on the par threes and three of the four scores counting as the team score. Again, how you did on these short holes was critical to success. The top team was plus one on those holes; second place team was plus two; third place team, a plus four; and fourth place team, a mind boggling plus seven. Oh my.

Community League Highlights

It's Walton time at Lakeview: Bob Walton fired a 38, low gross for the Seniors, and son Tyler came in at 37, low gross for Men. Tyler's round included a birdie catch at #4. Noah Callahan shot a 38 and found a birdie at #2. Kay Sheetz picked one up on #2 as well, shot a 49 gross and a 31 net. Playing partner Kim Jones shot a 47 gross, net 33, giving them a nifty net team score of 64. Scott Schutte came oh so close to scoring in the 30's, finding a birdie on #7 before stumbling at #9 with a double bogey to finish with a 40. That was good enough for a net 31 for Scott. His playing partner, Mike Arvin, found a birdie on hole #2 (must have been passing them out free up there at that hole!) in a round of 43, a net 35. Low gross for Women this week was Susie Chanley who got herself a birdie right off the bat at #1 and then went on to shoot a season low of 46; that gave her a net 27 and honors in that category for both Women and Seniors. Other birdie gatherers included Cam Sheetz at #8, and Jim Hart at #5. Low net Team score for the week belonged to Tarry Bratton and Karry Stoll with a nifty 61. The low net score for Men belonged to Karry Stoll with a 30. Leaders at the end of the week: Kent Summers and Noah Callahan in Team competition with 210 points; they are closely followed by Mike Arvin and Scott Schutte with 207 points and Cam Sheetz and Missy Kneip with 205 points. In Individual competition, Noah Callahan leads the pack with 450 points with Missy Kneip in second with 443 points. In the season ending Team Tournament, Tarry Bratton and Karry Stoll lead Kim Jones and Kay Sheetz by two points, with Mike Arvin and Scott Schutte four points back.

Low net team score of the day was a sterling 63 turned in by Dick Barber and John Chapman; only one other team, Swayze and Bird, managed net par or better. Other players with birds for the day included Dave Brown on #7, Jack Butcher on #8 and Mike Bird on #2. The match of the day between #1 and #2, that would be Richard Swayze and Mike Bird up against Jack Lents and Jim Bateman, ended in a 10-4 win for the leaders. That extended their lead in Team competition to eighteen points. Lents and Bateman as well as Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh are in second at 128 points. Wilma Bateman and Diane Bird are in fourth with 125 points. In Individual play, Mike Bird continues to lead the pack with 553 points; Al Kavanaugh is in second with 523 points. Don Lannan and Richard Swayze are in third and fourth with 479 points and 474 points respectively. Jack Lents, Charlie Sheetz, Virgil Harper, Vic Wallace, John Chapman and Jim Bateman round out the top ten. Average gross score for the day was 47.79, up almost a full stroke from the previous week. Seniors now enter three weeks of play where opponents are determined firstly by position in the standings and then by a win or a loss. Following these 'playoffs', the final two weeks of the Senior League are taken up by the Individual Flighted Tournament.

Tuesday Men Highlights

Rains in the area and a 'rain event' was declared. Still, lots of golfers came out and played and one even got a hole-in-one. That would be Skip Ackerman, as noted in an earlier article. Of note: Steven Downey had some excitement of his own, finding an eagle at #2 in a round of 37. John Drake came back from a week off and shot a 39; that translates to a very nifty net 26. A couple of zero handicappers, Phil Eyler and Short Jeffers, made it look easy with rounds of 34 and 35. Bill Carrico did some 24 strokes better than he did five years ago, bringing in a card with a score of 42; that's a net 29. Scott Arthur and Dave Wininger both birdied #7, Scott's shot coming within eight inches of the cup. A second hole-in-one would have been nice. Noah Callahan did not have the kind of round he wanted. The leader of the pack played bogey golf with only one par (on #7) and that negated by a double bogey on #9; that gave him a 44 for the day with a net 38. That's good news for some of his chasers, including Bryant Trambaugh who continued his improved play with a score of 40 gross and net 32. Jim Murphy will also benefit; he shot a 43 gross and a net 33. In spite of the very questionable weather, twenty-three of the thirty-seven golfers shot net par or better. Group average gross score: 42.6. Tuesday Men players have until the start of play this coming Tuesday to complete their rain event games.

Larry, Karry and Dave Take Saturday Scramble

A couple of brothers-in-law, Dave Wininger and Karry Stoll, spouses of two of the Lemon sisters, joined with Larry Hembree to shoot a nifty four under in the Saturday Scramble. That was plenty good enough to beat the competition who came in with scores of one under, even par and three over. A Dave Wininger approach shot to twelve feet at #6 and a Larry Hembree putt got the only eagle of the day. Each of the teams played over par on the par threes: the winners were plus one; the second place team of Wayne Souerdike, Bryant Trambaugh and Mike Bird were plus two; the third place team at even par, Junior Byron, Greg Potts and Joe Doyle, were plus three; and the guys who brought in the caboose, Joe Allen, Mike Kidwell and Kevin Byron, were plus five.

Community League

The Community League enters its final two weeks of the season this coming week and plays a team tournament in conjunction with the regular rounds. This past week, Karry Stoll found consecutive birdies on holes two and three in his round of 42. Jim Hart and Kent Summers also found birdies at the second hole. Tyler Walton shot a super 34, a round which included birdies on #6 and #9; the one on nine was off a tee shot that came to rest about two inches from the hole (golfers say: when they are that close, they really should drop in the hole). Richard Swayze got a birdie on #7 in a round of 41 while his playing partner, Tom Taylor, shot his best round of the year, a 40. Shirley Jeffers fired her season low with a 56. Susie Chanley also had her best outing of the season, a 49 gross with a net 30; the 30 earned her low net score in both Women and Senior. Low net score for Men at 31 was achieved by several golfers: Bob Norris, Richard Swayze, Mike Arvin, Tom Taylor, Karry Stoll and Tyler Walton. Low Gross scores for the week belong to Tyler Walton (34) in Men, making him a double Low Score Winner; Wilma Bateman (48) in Women; and Richard Swayze (41), making him a double Low Score winner as well, and Bob Walton (41) in Seniors. Average gross score for the week was 47.23, down almost a stroke from the previous week and the new low for the year. League standings show Kent Summers and Noah Callahan with 194 points climbing into first place in Team for the first time in a race that is hotly contested. Several teams, including the second place teams of Hart and Hart, and Sheetz and Kneip, remain in contention for the top honors. In Individual play, Missy Kneip remains on top with 420 points; Noah Callahan is close behind in second with 412 points, and Jim Hart isn't far off in third with 391 points. That race, too, is far from over.

Senior League

Carroll Rayhill returned to golfing, did a practice round on Wednesday, then came out for League and carded a 45, shooting his handicap. Pretty good for a guy who has been occupied with more serious matters most of the year. Allen Swayze had the low net score with a round of 30 on a gross of 53. That helped him and Charlie Sheetz shoot a team net score of 64, low for the event. Mike Anderson started his round by chipping one in for eagle on #4 and then ended it by getting his shot on #3 close enough to claim the hole prize. His 38 was good for second place in low gross. Wayne Pearl had five pars in his round of 40 gross and a net 33. Mike Bird found birdies on #4 and #8 to go along with six pars and a bogey for a 34 and the low gross of the day; his net 32 was good for second place in that category and his long birdie putt on #8 claimed a hole prize. Other hole prize winners were Al Kavanaugh on #9 and Rex Hudson on #7. Average gross score for the event was 47.54, a sharp hike from the 45.66 of a week ago (blame it on the rain and the slowed down fairways). At the end of play, Swayze and Bird remained on top in Team competition, leading Lents and Bateman by twelve points. In Individual competition, Mike Bird at 510 points is thirty-five in front of Al Kavanaugh and sixty ahead of Jack Lents.

Tuesday Men

Bryant Trambaugh turned in his card with a smile on his face: he followed last week's 37 with a nifty 40 this week. That would be a net 31 for Bryant. Rob Sterling had to play early as well, went out with the Green brothers, and carded a 45 gross and a 31 net; change of playing partners helped this time. Skip Ackerman hit one out of bounds on #5 and then drove the green with his 2nd tee shot; he finished his round with a 39, net 32. First eagle of the day was claimed by Steven Downey who chipped one in at #4; the rest of his round was pretty good with a few birdies offset by a few bogies giving him a 33 gross and a super fine 30 net. Jim Murphy came in and said he was ready to stop golfing; he had just shot a 39 gross, a net 28, and said that was pretty darn good for him. Of course, he was only joking - about stopping golfing - he did shoot the 39. Kevin Byron came out early and shot a super 40 with a net 29; tied his dad with the 40. Trenton Kidwell and Chris Bledsoe managed to birdie #4 but that turned out to be the highlight in a disappointing round for each of them, a 40 and a 42. TJ McAtee and sub Josh Hawkins each shot solid rounds of 37 and 41 and netted a team score of 64. Jon Boyd subbed for Tyler Kidwell, shot a 39 and had his eagle putt on #4 come up about this far (think a tiny bit) from dropping in. Short Jeffers had three birdies, four pars and a single bogey to come in with the 2nd 33 of the day. Brent Dalrymple subbed for Dave Strange, shot a 38 with a birdie and a hole prize on #3, and a net 30. Dave Wininger shot one under over the last four holes; the first five were something else in his round of 40. The wrap: Short Jeffers and Steven Downey's 33's were the low gross scores for the day while Jim Murphy's 28 was the low net. Don Nolan and Kevin Byron tied for second place in low net with 29's. Low net for a team was turned in by Rob Sterling and Jim Murphy, playing separately, with a more than decent 59. Hole prizes were claimed by Brent Dalrymple at #3, Mike Breeden at #7, Ryan Johnson at #8, and Terry Padgett at #9. Leaders remained the same with Noah Callahan staying in front of charging Kevin Byron and Jim Murphy in the Individual competition. In Team play, Terry Padgett and Gary Burris keep rolling on with Todd Baker and Noah Callahan, and Mark Sherer and Josh Huff giving chase in second and third place. Average gross score was 42.23, down more than a stroke from the previous week.

No scramble at Lakeview Saturday morning. The Butcher-Gee Scholarship scramble was held at Eagle View and down here at Lakeview, Mike Kidwell brought in a group from Kimball for an 18 hole scramble and then dinner at Stoll's.

Community League Results Event 9

The round of the week goes to the team of Oma Bird and Lucas Bird, each of whom had sterling rounds at net 28's. That gave them a net team score of 56, and individual net lows in the Women and Men categories. Oma also got low net round for Seniors with her eight under par. Low gross honors go to Noah Callahan in Men with a very nifty 36, his personal best so far; to Oma Bird and Wilma Bateman at 47 in the Women; and to Bob Walton in Senior with a score of 42. Birdie shooters for the week included Joe Potts, Patty Bowling and Noah Callahan at #2, and Cam Sheetz at #7. Leaders at the end of the week remain the same as the week before: Missy Kneip in the Individual competition with 406 points; Noah Callahan is second with 393 points. In Team play, Jim and Paul Hart top the list with 186 points with Cam Sheetz and Missy Kneip in second with 181 points. Average gross score for the group this week was 48.03, down from 48.73 the previous week and the best so far this year.

Senior League Results Event 14

Al Kavanaugh had himself quite a day, birdieing both one and eight, finding six other holes with pars and settling for a bogey on five; that gave him a double low score, a 34 in the gross and a 29 in the net. Mike Bird wasn't far behind in the gross, picking up pars on each of the nine holes to come in with a 35. Jim Bateman followed Al in the net category just as closely, coming in with a gross 41 and a net 30; Jim also got himself a birdie on hole #2. Dave Brown and Richard Swayze also found birdies on #2; Dave also picked one up at hole #7 in his round of 42. Virgil Harper, who got his first career ace during the American Legion scramble at Eagle View this past Sunday, continued his sharpshooting by picking up the hole prize at #7; other hole prize winners included John Chapman at #3, Al Kavanaugh at #8, and Jack Butcher at #9. Leaders at the end of the day's play were Richard Swayze and Mike Bird in Team competition with 125.5 points, and Mike Bird in Individual competition with 462 points. In Team play, Dave Strange and Clyde Wake remain in second place with 115.5 points; tied for third at 114 points are the teams of Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh, and Jack Lents and Jim Bateman. In Individual competition, Al Kavanaugh sits in second place with 451 points, and Jack Lents is in third with 446 points. Average gross score for the day was 45.66, down almost a full stroke from the previous week. The drier fairways have improved the carry of the golf ball off of the tee, something which all of the seniors appreciate (younger golfers, too, I expect).

Tuesday Men Results Event 15

Heard that Virgil Harper got himself a hole-in-one up at Eagle View during the American Legion scramble. Back here at Lakeview, he finished with a par on #9 and a gross of 44; that would be a net 33 for the new Ace. Five years ago, Mark Jones brought the caboose in with a score of 59; today, a 39 – that would be a twenty stroke improvement which is very nice. Steady eddie Phil Eyler shot an even par 35, finding a birdie on six to offset a bogey on three. John Walker and Skip Ackerman are hoping to vacate the cellar this week; each of them shot 39's. Greg Potts had to thread a needle, actually a couple of trees, up by #4 green; he did it and then made a long putt for par and finished with a round of 36. Larry Sutton found two birdies, one at #5 and the other at #7, in shooting an excellent 39 gross and a net of 31. Mark Sherer got five fours to start his round and shot even par on the final four holes for a round of 35. Chris Bledsoe found a new low with a round of 36 that included four birdies, two double bogeys and two bogeys and a single par. Short Jeffers found one of those blinkety-blank bogeys on #2, one of those for sure birdie holes, but then went on to shoot pars and birdies to finish with a 34. Alan Burch stumbled on six, had a few choice words to say, and went on to finish with three pars for a 36. Kevin Byron took a triple bogey on #2 but did well enough on the other holes to come in with a 44 gross and a good net 32. Jared Butcher, subbing for dad Terry, also had a triple bogey, his on #1, and also evened out his game to come in with a 40 and a net 32 as well. Bryant Trambaugh had the low round of his life, firing a 37 which included a birdie on #8; the 37 translated to a nifty net of 27. And that gave Bryant the low net round of the day. Second in that category was a tie at 28 between Don Nolan, Bric Parker and Tarry Bratton, who was subbing for Dave Strange. Low gross round was shot by Short Jeffers with his 34; second there was also a tie, 35's shot by Phil Eyler and Mark Sherer. Low net team score was a three way tie: Curt Johnson and Bric Parker, Steven Downey and Dave Strange (sub Tarry Bratton), and John Walker and Skip Ackerman. Hole prizes were gathered in by Bill Carrico on #3, Larry Sutton on #7, Bryant Trambaugh on #8, and Tim Voegerl on #9. Average gross score for the event was 42.35, more than a stroke better than last week's 43.44. Leaders at the end of the day were the same as last week: Terry Padgett and Gary Burris in Team competition, and Noah Callahan in Individual competition.

Bird, Potts and Allen Win Scramble with Par Three Mastery

Mike Bird, Greg Potts and Joe Allen shot minus 2 on the three par threes and minus three on the other six holes to come in with a score of five under. That was more than enough to take the Saturday Scramble trophy. Dave Wininger, Kevin Byron and TJ Howell had a plus one on the par threes and a minus four elsewhere to finish with a three under. Doug Denson, Karry Stoll, Gary Webb and Ward Smith had three over on the par threes to go with four birdies and came in at one under. Junior Byron, Larry Hembree and Curt Johnson, the team with the best score on the scramble holes, a five under, also managed to do the worst on the par threes with nary a par, going plus six to finish at plus one. The winning team's mastery of the par threes started at number three when Greg Potts and Mike Bird each got up and down; they each then birdied the short seventh hole. Joe Allen joined the party on the par threes by getting an up and down on the ninth, a feat matched by Greg.

Community League Highlights

Missy Kneip stormed back from losing first place a week ago by firing a 47 gross and a 28 net. That gave her a double low for Women, both gross and net, for the week. It also propelled her back into first place in the Individual standings. Oma and Lucas Bird had a dandy low net team score of 60, with Oma leading the way with a net 28 which tied her for low net round for Women (with Missy). The two Waltons did okay for themselves as well, with Tyler getting low gross round for Men with a 36 and Bob getting low gross round for Seniors with a 39. Low net score for Men was a tie between Phil Ader and Scott Schutte, each getting a 31. Birdies for the week were gathered in by Bob Norris (#3), Tyler Walton (#4), Joe Potts (#1) and Tom Taylor (#2). In Team standings, Jim and Paul Hart remained on top with 161 points though closely followed by Kent Summers and Noah Callahan with 160 points. The Sheetz/Kneip team is third with 159 points. As mentioned, Missy Kneip, with 366 points, is on top in the Individual standings. Jim Hart, Noah Callahan, Mike Arvin, Bob Norris and Bob Walton round out the top six with points ranging from 342 down to 277.

Senior League Results Event 13

John Chapman birdied five, had a bunch of pars and only two bogies to post a 36 gross and a 26 net. That gave him a double low score for the day, one of those things that doesn't happen any too often. Mike Bird went seven holes at par and then found a bogey and a double bogey to close with a 38. Partner Richard Swayze found five extra shots on his closing three holes to finish at 44 and a net 35, having shot just four over on the first six holes. Mike Anderson found the only other birdie, a four on hole #4. Vic Wallace, playing with Dale DeLong's replacement, Ward Smith, shot a 46 and a net 29; the 29 gave him second place in the low net category. Vic and Ward shot the low net team score for the day with a 61. Hole prize winners for the day were Junior Byron on #3, Al Kavanaugh on #7, Ward Smith at #8 and Wilma Bateman on #9. Average gross score for the day was 46.59, down .3 from the previous week. At the end of play, Richard Swayze and Mike Bird remained in first place in Team play with115 points; Dave Strange and Clyde Wake climbed into second place with 106.5 points while Jack Lents and Jim Bateman slipped into a tie for third place with Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh at 103 points. In Individual play, Mike Bird slipped into first place with 417 points, one point in front of Richard Swayze and sixteen in front of Jack Lents. Al Kavanaugh at 395 and Don Lannan at 392 are in fourth and fifth place.

Tuesday Men Results Event 14

Kevin Byron came out and played early with Junior's sub, Dave Brown, found a lot of fours including one on #6 for a birdie, and shot his best round ever, a 40 and a net 28. He and Dave combined for a net 62. Gary LaMar and Virgil Harper had themselves a super day, coming in with scores of 42 and 43 and a net team total of 62, the second one of the day. (Course playing easy?) Phil Eyler: eight pars and a birdie on #2; 34 gross, 34 net. Trenton Kidwell got out early cause of a day trip to Holiday World, found a double bogey on three but then birdied six and eight to go along with six pars to turn in a round of 35. Bill Carrico, who knew that his 59 placed last five years ago, birdied the first hole and went on to card a 45, a net 32; playing partner Keith Parsons shot a 47 with a net 31. Terry Butcher birdied #2 and #6 and six pars to shoot a 34; both he and partner Joe Doyle shot net 33's. Alan Burch had a stretch of birdie, birdie, eagle from hole two through four and even par on the rest for a brilliant 31 gross and a net 27. Of note: Tyler Kidwell and his wife have a baby girl named Riley, born last Friday. Jason Rominger is getting married this weekend. Congrats to Alan Burch and TJ McAtee who traded super outings the last two weeks to propel their team to a tie with Terry Butcher and Joe Doyle at 89 points for the Team Tournament II trophy. Buck Holland and Doug Denson came in third a mere point behind the leaders. Trenton Kidwell and Chris Bledsoe got the fourth spot with a total of 80 points.

Saturday Scramble

Callahan Makes Like Tiger, Team Triumphs

Noah Callahan hit an off the collar, sloping, twenty foot, pause-at-the-hole shot on #5, ala Tiger Woods at the 16th in the 2005 Masters. That putt got him, Larry Hembree and Curt Johnson to two under and into the card draw for the Saturday Morning Scramble trophy. Dave Wininger paired up with Joe Doyle and birdied the long holes to get to two under, while Mike Bird and Kevin Byron used matching twenty-five foot putts on #3 and #7, along with a third birdie on #6 and a killer bogey on #8 to join the other two teams in the draw. Pam Byron again did the honors and made winners of the Callahan-Hembree-Johnson team.

Community League Highlights

Scott Arthur had the round of his life this week, shooting a brilliant 36 which translated into an equally brilliant 25 net. His round included a birdie on #5, and was a hugh factor in getting the Arthur-Mullen team the low net team score of the week, a low 57. Tarry Bratton also had an unusually good week, firing a gross 45 and a net 28. Lucas Bird, the youngest golfer at 13 in League play, parred two of his last three holes, sank several four to five foot putts, shot a gross 50 and a net 30 and impressed his Opa, Mike, who was standing in for his Oma. Patty Bowling had the low net round for Women and shared the low net for Seniors with Jim Hart; both had rounds of three under par. Scott Arthur had the low gross and the low net for Men, while Mike Bird had the low gross for Seniors with a 39. Kim Jones came in with a 50 which was good enough for low gross Women. Leaders at the end of the week's play: In Team play, father and son Jim and Paul Hart became the first team other than Cam Sheetz and Missy Kneip to hold the top spot, and now have a four point lead over the former leaders, 153 to 149. Jim Hart also jumped over Missy Kneip in the Individual standings with 317 points; Missy is in second with 309 points and Noah Callahan is in third with 293 points. Birdie shooters for the week included the afore mentioned Scott Arthur, and Mike Arvin, Tyler Walton, Kim Jones and Paul Hart. Average gross for the group went up by almost a half a stroke, from 48.8 to 49.2. Still, more than half of the golfers, fifteen of twenty-eight, came in with net scores of par or better.

Fun Tournament Results

The Senior League's Fun Tournament was held this Thursday with five teams playing a modified scramble - golfers played their own balls on the par threes with the low two scores counting as the team score; the remaining holes were played in traditional scramble fashion. The results have two teams shooting 88's, even par for the round. Rick Anderson, Jim Leonard, Ray Shaw and Bob Elliott used the only eagle of the day, on #2, to help offset a plus seven on the par threes, for their 88. That drew them even with the team of Mike Bird, Dave Brown, Kim Jones and Pam Byron who covered the par threes in a plus five and found an equal number of birdies. Third place was taken by Jack Butcher, John Chapman, Vic Wallace, Clyde Wake and Shirley Jeffers with a score of two over par 90. Mike Anderson, Dick Barber, and Denny and Sharon Wagoner shot a 91 for fourth place. Al Kavanaugh hit a bomb of a putt on his team's first hole, #8, a putt that covered thirty some feet. That putt gave Al the long putt hole prize but turned out to be the highlight of their play. Richard Swayze, Diane Bird and Charlie Sheetz joined Al and watched as putt after putt came up lacking in the following seventeen holes. Their team came in with a seven over par 95. Sharpshooters for the day along with Al were Ray Shaw for his close to the barrel shot at #2, and Dave Brown and Jack Butcher for their close to the pin shots on #7 and #9. Prior to the start of play, chipping and putting contests were held. Mike Anderson won the putting prize while Pam Byron captured the chipping prize.

Tuesday Men Event 13 Results

Richie Green got himself another birdie, this one at #2, and shot a nifty fifty, and an even niftier net 30. Dave Brown, coming over from the Senior League, subbed for Junior Byron and fired a one under net 34. Bric Parker shot a 51 and wanted to talk about his third shot into the green at six, a high one over the trees and onto the green; the resultant two putt gave him his only par of his round. Steven Downey fired a 38 which included a chip in for eagle on #4. Greg Potts shot a very nice 36, a net 31, and found a birdie at #4. Keith Parsons rolled one in from just off the green on #9 to salvage a round that included fifty-one other shots. George Templin came out and practiced some on Monday afternoon, adjusted his swing path just a little, and then shot a very nice 38 gross, a very nifty 31 net and found a birdie to boot on #4. Short Jeffers had a 'well balanced' par round of three birds, three pars and three bogeys. Tyler Kidwell, getting close to being a dad, was two over through three, but then got four birdies in a row and finished with two pars and a hole prize on nine; a very nice 34 gross and a 31 net. TJ McAtee did one better with a super 33 which included an eagle on #5; TJ also had birdies on #2 and #3, got the low gross with his 33 and also low net with a 27. Hole prize winners included Josh Huff on #3, Larry Sutton on #7, Noah Callahan on #8 and Tyler Kidwell on #9. Leaders at the conclusion of play are Noah Callahan with 916 points in the Individual standings with James Hager and Buck Holland tied for second at 854 points. In Team play, Terry Padgett and Gary Burris remain on top with 526 points; Mark Sherer and Josh Huff are in second place with 483 points. After week one of the Team Tournament, Bric Parker and Curt Johnson top the leaderboard with their net score of 64 and 60 points; three teams are tied for second at 56 points: Doug Denson and Buck Holland, George Templin and Don Nolan, and Trenton Kidwell and Chris Bledsoe. Souerdike, Byron and Doyle Win Saturday Scramble

Wayne Souerdike, Kevin Byron and Joe Doyle used the erratic and symmetrical approach on their way to a scramble win this Saturday. Three birdies, three pars and three bogeys brought them into the clubhouse right where they started nine holes before, and that was good enough to get them into a card draw for the trophy. The teams of Darvin Knepp, Joe Allen and Verlyn Knepp on one hand, and Mike Bird, Curt Johnson and Dan Brock on the other, both came in at even pars as well, though they each used the more common approach with a birdie, a bogey and a bunch of pars. Pam Byron was called on to make the card draw that would determine the winners, and found one that made her son, Kevin, a happy young man. Along with Wayne Souerdike and Joe Doyle.

Community League Results Event 6

The round of the week was shot by Brian Mullen, a newcomer to Lakeview league play this year. Brian shot a net 28 on a gross of 48. Low net for a team was shot by Jim and Paul Hart, a nifty 61. Low net for Women was shot by Diane Bird at three under; she also shared low net for a Senior with Bob Norris. Birdies for the week were claimed by Cam Sheetz on #4, and by Tyler Walton and Chris Hogan on #6. Noah Callahan had the most pars at seven, and shared the low gross for Men with Joe Potts at 38. Low gross for Women was shot by Kim Jones, a 50. Low gross for a Senior was shot by Bob Walton with a 41. At week's end, Missy Kneip and Cam Sheetz still led in Team competition with 137 points. The team of Jim and Paul Hart are in hot pursuit with 135 points. Kent Summers and Noah Callahan are in third place with 133 points. In Individual competition, Missy Kneip remains on top with 294 points; Mike Arvin is in second with 289 points. Noah Callahan, Jim Hart and Paul Hart round out the top five. Average gross score for the week was 48.81, up half a stroke from the previous week.

Senior League Results Event 12

Mike Anderson cruised around the course picking up pars at each hole and came in at 35, the low gross for the day. Mike Bird came in second with a 37 and also got the hole prize on #3. Low net was claimed by Diane Bird with a nifty 27 on a 47 gross. Diane is just back from a week on the West Coast and four golf outings on California courses with her sister. Diane thinks playing a lot of golf helped her confidence and that helped her game today. Second in low net was shared by Don Lannan, Ward Smith and Mike Anderson with 30's. Low net team was the Wilma Bateman and Diane Bird team with a low nine under; Dave Strange and Ward Smith, playing for Clyde Wake, shot a five under. Ward and Dave played the leaders, Richard Swayze and Mike Bird, and took them to town and then out to the wood shed, winning 11 of the 14 points. Still, at the end of the day, Richard and Mike remain atop the team standings with 104 points; Jack Lents and Jim Bateman are in second place with 98.5 points. In the Individual competition, Jack Lents jumped into first place with 391 points; Richard Swayze is still very close at 390 points; Mike Bird is in third at 380 points and Charlie Sheetz is in fourth with 374 points. Other highlights: Birdies for the day were picked up by Jack Butcher on two, Mike Bird on six, and Ward Smith on eight. Ward's birdie was earned with the sinking of a fifteen foot putt that also got him the prize for longest putt. Other hole prize winners were Richard Swayze on #7 and Jack Nickless, subbing for Rex Hudson, on #9. Group average gross was 46.8, just about even with last week's 46.7.

Tuesday Men Event 12 Results

Mike Smith found a birdie on #2 and fired his first sub 40 round of the year, a 39 with a net of 30. Richie Green followed his best round with a not so good round of 60; big brother Eddie was back from a week away from the links and shot a 42 gross and a net 35 that put him in a tie for third place in the Individual standings. Phil Eyler turned in a score of 34 that included birdies on the first two holes and the last hole but also a couple of bogeys on two of the three short holes, numbers three and seven. Bill Carrico, like Richie Green, followed his best round ever with a very forgettable one, a 52 that followed a scintillating 38 of the week before. Terry Padgett was delighted with the three birdies he found at holes four, five and seven as well as the near hole in one at seven; three bogeys and a double made it a roller coaster ride and a final score of 37. Another bad round followed a very good round: James Hager did the middle three holes at one under but played the front three and the back three in eight over for a 42, a hefty ten stroke advance on his 32 of the previous week. Chris Bledsoe followed his best ever round with a good 41 which included his first ever birdie, at #6, and a very good net of 32. Short Jeffers came in with a 37 and had eight birdie putts, none of which fell into the cup. Warren Atkison shot a superb 40 and a net 27 to take low net honors. Greg Potts and Dan Steiner, who, by the way, tied playing partner Dave Wininger with a 40, shot net 29's for second place. Low Gross went to Phil Eyler's 34 with Terry Butcher and Mark Potts placing second with their 35's. The low net team score was posted by Tim Voegerl and Warren Atkison with a dandy 64. Hole prizes were claimed by Joe Allen on #3, Terry Padgett on #7, Larry Sutton on #8, and Terry Butcher on #9. Group average score rose to 43.52, up from 42.90 the previous week, in spite of the very nice weather and the absence of the biting midges.

Mike Bird gets Ace at Lakeview's Number Nine

On Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Lakeview Golf Course, Mike Bird used his Ping Eye2 five iron from a hundred and forty yards out at #9 tee box to strike golfers' gold for the second time. His tee shot looked very good from the start but it disappeared into the morning sun's glare and left Mike and his playing partners, Wayne Souerdike and Kevin Byron, wondering where the ball went. When they were halfway down to the hole, the golfers could see the ball mark, about a foot short and a foot left of the pin, but no ball either near or far. Kevin Byron was the first one to the hole and pulled the pin and the ball out of the hole, revealing that it indeed was a hole-in-one. That makes it two aces for Mike, the other one also a 'blind' shot into the afternoon sun of an October day back in 1999. That one fell into the hole across the way at #3. Mike's golf ball was a Maxfli Noodle Long and Soft.

Saturday Manager's Scramble

Bird gets an Ace but Kidwell, Allen and Johnson take the trophy

Mike Bird got the shot of the day in the Saturday Manager's Scramble but that wasn't quite enough to propel his team to victory. Mike Kidwell, Joe Allen and Curt Johnson covered the course in a measly one under par and that was just enough to beat the contenders. Mike Bird, Wayne Souerdike and Kevin Byron came in at even par as did the team of Junior Byron, Larry Hembree and Joe Doyle. The modified scramble saw the golfers complete the always tough par threes in a combined five over; the normally compliant par fives returned only one birdie; and the usually not so easy number five was birdied by each of the teams.

Community League Results Event 4

Kay Sheetz and Kim Jones found birdies on #7 and # 9 on their way to rounds of 47 and 46, each of them firing two under in their net rounds. Brian Mullen also found a birdie on #7, his first of the season and got his low round as well, a 51 gross and a 33 net. Joe Potts remains Mr. Consistency with a round of 40 which included a birdie on #2. Noah Callahan and Patty Bowling fired net rounds of five under, that would be a nifty 40 for Noah, and an equally nifty 50 for Patty. Low net round of the week was turned in by Scott Schutte who fired a gross round of 42, a net 28, and picked up a birdie on #8 to ice his cake. Two thirds of the players turned in rounds of net par or better. League leaders through the fourth week of the season are: in Team competition, Cam Sheetz and Missy Kniep share the top spot with Kent Summers and Noah Callahan at 92 points; the Waltons, Bob and Tyler, are in third place with 87 points. In Individual competition, Missy Kniep remains at the top with 210 points; Mike Arvin and Jim Hart share second place with 187 points; and Noah Callahan is in fourth place with 177 points.

Senior League Results Event 10

All the seniors showed up and all of them stuck around to finish their rounds in spite of the nasty efforts of the little bugs who have been visiting the area this past week. Highlights and comments: Junior Byron chipped one in on #4 for his first eagle of the year; partner Pam Byron also did well with a par five on the hole and finished with a gross 45 and a stupendous net 22. Wow! Jack Butcher had the most pars with five; Mike Bird the most birdies with two; and Junior Byron had the lone eagle of the day. Vic Wallace and Dale DeLong had superior rounds of 46 and 47 and a team net of 58, second to the sterling 54 team score of Junior and Pam Byron. Vic and Dale think maybe the bugs had something to do with their improved play but we decided that the bugs were not welcome to stick around. The average gross score continued to go down with a group average of 47.23, about three quarters of a stroke better than last week. Twenty-four of the thirty-one players came in with a net par or better. Hole prizes were claimed by super sub Tom McAtee on #3, Sam Potts on #7, Kenny Hudson on #8 and Mike Anderson on #9. Leaders at the end of the day: Mike Bird and Richard Swayze lead Jack Lents and Jim Bateman by eleven points in Team competition; Mike Anderson and Albert Kavanaugh are thirteen and a half back. In Individual competition, Junior Byron climbed to the top with 336 points though closely followed by Richard Swayze at 335 points; Albert Kavanaugh at 327 and Virgil Harper at 319 are in third and fourth place. Of note: Charlie Sheetz and Allen Swayze saved their best for their ninth hole of the day, each of them getting pars at #2; Allen's was his very first par of the year. It was suggested that they might want to show up a little earlier next week to play a few practice holes, like maybe eight. They both grunted something in reply, like "Oh yea, that's a great idea!"

Tuesday Men Highlights

The little buggies are everywhere and very interested in resting for a while on one's neck or arm or cheek or eye. Nasty nits. Greg Potts, back from a week off because of storm damage, fired a 38 and a net 31 with a birdie on #7. Phil Eyler had seven pars and a birdie at four in a round of 35 and a net 32. Dave Strange opened with a triple bogey but then settled down and came in with a nifty 42 gross and a net 33. Buck Holland opened with a par and finished up with a 45 and a net 32. Joe Doyle finished with a par on #9, a 46 gross and a super net of 30. George Templin chipped one in on #4 which he said was better than Tiger's on #17 at the Open. He fired a 40 with a net 32. Playing partners Jim Murphy and Rob Sterling also had good rounds, shooting a net 32 and a net 33. Junior Byron almost had a perfect par round; a short pitch on #8 landed short of the green resulting in a chip and two putt for his only mistake. The 36 gross still gave him a very nifty net round of 30. Eddie Green misses a two foot birdie putt on #8 but still comes in with a 39, his best round ever; that would be a net 31 for him. Josh Huff rolled in an eighteen foot putt just off the green at #9 to complete a round of 43 with a net of 31. His team partner, Mark Sherer played earlier in the day and did well with a 38 and a net 34. Noah Callahan ran one in for a birdie from off the green on #6 and completed a round that started three over and ended up 40 gross and a net 32; a super recovery. Dan Steiner, last golfer in, fired a very nice 43 and an even nicer net 30. The wrap up: Hole prizes to Jack Divine (he was handing out autographs to anyone interested at #5 green), Greg Potts, George Templin and Phil Eyler. Low gross rounds to Phil Eyler with a 35 and Junior Byron with a 36. Low net team score was turned in by Mike Albertson and Mark Jones, a super 63. Larry Sutton and Brent Courter remain on top of the Team standings with 410 points;Terry Padgett and Gary Burris are in second at 406 points. Noah Callahan scooted into first in the Individual standings and has 774 points; Eddie Green climbed into second with a point total of 730; Jim Murphy and Dave Wininger follow with 715 and 690 points.
