Bits and Pieces for a Monday

-on the Big Boy Tour at the Barclays (beautiful course with a stunning backdrop), Heath Slocum comes from 124th position (he apparently sat on the edge of his chair holding his breath with his fingers crossed just to get into the playoffs) to make a clutch 20+ foot putt on the 72nd hole while number one guy Tiger Woods misses a 7 footer that would have tied. What is this world coming to. TW sure is showing a vulnerable side these last several weeks. Of course, he did miss that little bitty putt early in yesterday's round, the one or two footer that did that slick lip out in front of god and and everybody in the whole world. That was the first stunning miss of the day.

-and on the Big Girl Tour, another South Korean, a nineteen year old, MJ Hur, wins the Safeway out in Oregon by making a steely six foot birdie putt on the second extra hole to topple Suzann Pettersen. Amazing. (Michelle Wie came in tied for fourth.)

-pretty good golf going on right here in our own backyard: in last night's skin game, Dave Wininger birdied 2 and 4, I birdied 6 and 7, Mike Arvin also birdied 7 with a putt from just off the green, Mark Sherer birdied 8 and 9. Mike Seals in the group in front of us also birdied 6. And that's just the obvious stuff; expect there's much more to the story with amazing par shots made by the dozen. Of course, there's the other stuff as well, the miss hits and the frustrating shots and the ones we want to forget. Wait a minute. I don't remember any shot of that 'forgettable' variety. But, you know what? Diane has always accused me of having a very selective memory, one that remembers only the good stuff. The good stuff.

-did you stop and notice the greens yesterday? Just lovely. Good job, Eric.

-Heading over to the golf course for a morning game with the Hudsons and the Lents and the Butchers of the world.

Trees and Sand Help Seals Team Win

Adam Cissel had something going on with Mother Nature in the Saturday morning scramble at Lakeview. His fairway shot into #6 rattled around in the trees and evetually kicked out and onto the green where Mike Seals dropped in a ten footer for an eagle. On #9, Adam's tee shot scooted though the sand trap and stopped fifteen feet in front of the cup where George Templin made the putt for a birdie. The team of Mike Seals, Larry Hembree, George Templin and Adam Cissel made four other birdies to post a score of seven under to capture first place. The team of Junior Byron, Greg Potts and Bryant Trambaugh posted a score of six under and took second place on a tiebreaker. Mike Kidwell, Mike Bird, Jim Love and Karry Stoll also posted a score of six under, largely due to the stellar putting of Karry Stoll, who ran in four of five putts of ten feet and longer. Three other teams posted scores of five under for the day.

Senior League

The Senior League’s regular season came to a close with Vic Wallace and Rex Hudson each shooting 42’s and getting 38 points to hold onto the top two positions in the individual competition. Vic quietly slipped into first place in the second to last week of the season and then fended off Rex and Jack Lents to claim the championship. The team champions, Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron, who had sealed their win the week before and were no doubt looking forward to the upcoming flighted tournament, ended the season on a losing note with Ray Shaw and Dave Brown handing them a 10.5 to 3.5 defeat. Low scores for the event were posted by Richard Barber with a nifty net 27, Mike Bird and Junior Byron with even par 35’s, and the team of Richard Barber and John Chapman in the team category with a super 61. Low average scores for the season were claimed by Jack Nickless in net with an average of 34.33 per round, and Mike Bird in gross with an average of 37.68. Event sharpshooters were Carroll Rayhill and Vic Wallace with long putts and Mike Anderson and Jack Butcher with close to the pin shots. The next two weeks the seniors will be going after flight championships with Junior Byron, Tony Wease, Wayne Pearl, Ray Shaw and Dave Strange being the number one seeds in the various flights. The 36 hole handicapped tournament was completed as the players finished their rain delayed rounds this past week. Diane Bird, with a chip in for birdie on her last hole, tied Pam Byron for the trophy, each posting scores of ten under par for the tournament. Vic Wallace was third at six under.

Tuesday Men’s League

Mike Breeden shot a 38 while Tracy Rayhill posted a 40 as the two traded places at the top in the Tuesday Men’s League this past week. With two weeks to go in the season, the top spot remains a hotly contested item with over fifteen players still in contention. The same is true in the team competition with Greg Potts and Tracy Rayhill posting a net 70 to capture enough points to stay in first place ahead of Joe Allen and Mike Kidwell Terry Padgett and Gary Burris shot a 68 to close the gap a bit on the front runners. Low scores for the event were posted by Kevin Byron with a net 30, Mark Potts with a three under 32, and the team of Kevin Byron and Junior Byron with a super 61. Kevin also claimed the special ‘finesse’ competition with a close to the pin shot at #7, beating out 42 other competitors. In a second special competition, Mike Kidwell slipped by Bryant Trambaugh by two feet and son Tyler by four to win the ‘grip and rip’ long drive competition. The three of them each hit drives of the 300+ yard variety. Event sharpshooters were Mark Potts at #3 and #8, Ernie Sherer at #4, Tyler Walton at #6 and Terry LaMar at #9. Along with the seniors, the Tuesday Men have a flighted tournament the next two weeks. Number one seeds are Mark Potts, Mark Sherer, George Templin, Joe Allen, Kevin Byron and Virgil Harper.

Lakeview-Washington Country Club Tin Cup

With the Tuesday Boyz Club having an East-West Challenge on September 15th (at Country Oaks) and then concluding at Lakeview on September 22nd, I am going to cancel our date with the folks from the Washington Country Club. If you have any interest in pursuing that Tin Cup series, let me know and I'll give you available information. Will advise the Washington Country Club contacts tomorrow of this decision. Will also extend an invitation to those players on either side to join in the East-West Challenge on the 15th and the 22nd.

Upcoming East-West Challenge - Tuesday Boyz Club

Note from Mike Anderson of the Tuesday Boyz Club:

We will be playing a home and away East/West challenge beginning with 15
Sept at Country oaks playing in twosomes against twosomes in scramble the
first nine holes and best ball in the second nine holes. Then playing on 22
Sept at Lakeview 2-Ball gross the first nine holes and alternating shot on
the second nine holes. The teams for alternating shot will pick which player
will tee-off from the odd holes 1,3,5,7,9 and who will tee-off the even
holes 2,4,6,8 alternating thru making the putt. If one gets rained out will
pay based on the one course scores. If it rains during the event must play 9
holes to get at least one event in of the four. It will be match play
throughout but finish each event because for the day there will be a medal
point for the day of 18 holes. Three possible points for each team each day.

More on Saturday Morning Golf Games

Nine of the scramble players yesterday morning stayed for a second nine holes. Trenton Kidwell, Tyler Kidwell, Noah Callahan, Bryant Trambaugh and Trey Kidwell went out in the first group. Larry Hembree, Mike Kidwell, Mark Sherer and I went out in a second group. When all was said and done, four skins were claimed: Mike Bird (me) with birdies on #5 and #7; Trenton Kidwell with an eagle on #4 (second eagle of the day for Trenton as he chipped in on #5 during the earlier scramble), and Tyler Kidwell with a birdie on #6. The second group also played for Johnny's Quarters (Johnny Jackson, Larry's granddad, loved to challenge his golfing partners to see who could hit it long and straight even though he often was the short man in the group). Playing also for closest to the flags on the par threes, Mike Bird (me) ended up with six of them, Mark Sherer with three, Mike Kidwell with two and Larry Hembree with one. Senior Open at the Oaks

Played in an 18 hole Senior Open at Country Oaks earlier today. Had a nine hole stretch where I played decently, hole five through thirteen - plus two; unfortunately, the game had a beginning and an end that was just this side of disastrous. I was plus six on the first four holes and a plus eight on the last five. Some other Lakeview golfers also played: Jack Lents, Jack Butcher, Morris Cornelius, Albert Kavanaugh, Mike Anderson.

Results for today's play are posted here. You will also find the flights for the upcoming tournament the next two Thursdays. Congrats to Vic Wallace for winning the top spot in the league's individual competition. Rex Hudson finished a mere four points behind in second place.

Senior Winners

Vic Wallace held fast in a showdown with Jack Lents earlier today. He and Rex Hudson (below) started the day in first and second place in the Senior League standings, with Jack a close third. Each of them earned 38 points on the day and (unofficially) remained in first and secondf place at day's end. That would make Vic the champ. Will confirm a bit later today. Congrats are in order, me thinks.

Seniors - Come on Down!

Final day of the regular season though the Flighted Tournament takes up the next two weeks to bring the scheduled season to a close (seems like it just started). Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron have already clinched the top position in the Team race; probably be some shuffling around from second through the guys at the bottom after today's play. In the Individual competition, the top is anything but secure. Vic Wallace and Rex Hudson are at 545 and 541 points but Jack Lents at 526 and a 50 point day like he had last week could catch and pass for the top spot. Junior Byron, Mike Bird and Wayne Pearl each shot themselves in the foot with bad days last Thursday and would have to have the stars align to vault to the top. Still... Expect more shuffling today. Bring your A game and a bag of fun (just for fun) when you come on out to the course in just a bit. Start time at 9am.

Tuesday League Golfers

Ernie Sherer, Mark's dad, came down from Linton and subbed for Josh Huff in Tuesday League action. Here he is seen just after making a fifteen foot putt on #4 to claim the long putt prize for the evening.

Dave Wininger and Doug Denson each ended up in the sand at #7. Doug's sand shot hit the stick and bounded off ten feet to the right while Dave's came to rest a couple of feet from the hole.

Tyler Kidwell's tee shot at #6 started right at the camera and then veered off into the center of the fairway and just missed being the long drive of the day. His dad, Mike Kidwell, claimed that honor by out driving Tyler by maybe four feet and beating Bryant Trambaugh by two feet. All three drives were of the 300 foot and then some variety.

Senior Play on a Monday Highlighted by Diane Bird and Terry LaMar

Several of the Senior League teams came out yesterday and completed their matches that were postponed because of last Thursday's stormy forecast. In one of the more exciting matches, the most exciting I would guess, Diane Bird and Terry LaMar (subbing for Wilma Bateman) took on Vic Wallace and Mike McLaughlin. Diane and Terry came to the last hole (#6) down two strokes in the total net score and even on the holes (four each). Diane then chipped it in from off the green for a birdie (Holy Cow!) and Terry ran a putt in off the collar for a par (Holy Cow 2!). Vic and Mike must have been stunned and finished with a bogey and a double bogey to lose both the match (5-4) and the total net score (69-67) and give Diane and Terry a 10-4 win on the day. My oh my.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down! (2)

Remember the day's special competition mentioned in the previous blog - Grip and Rip on #6 tee box and then switch over to a Finesse shot at #7. With just three weeks to go, Tracy Rayhill has plunked himself into the top position in both competitions. He and Greg Potts are playing awfully well - can they keep it up? Heard Tracy say last night that he hopes Mark Potts can play with them tonight - he always plays better with Mark in the foursome, drawing on the young guy's expertise along the way. Another guy playing pretty good right now is Gary Burris, currently sitting in third place in each competition (with Terry Padgett in team play). Gary has his handicap down to a gaudy three. Derek Gilbertson is also flying high with a handicap down to one - going to reach that big zero, Derek? Among the top ten players in the individual competition, Larry Sutton and Bric Parker have the big handicaps. Does it give them the advantage down the home stretch? Any prognosticators out there who would like to predict who will be on top in fifteen days? Course is in great condition, weather is jim dandy, your golf game is fine tuned. Better come on down and strut your stuff. Tip for the day: steady as she goes in spite of the Grip and Rip and Finesse competitions. Swing easy, make good contact.

The Wie Lass

She did good at the Solheim Cup. Me thinks she needs to do more away from Mom and Dad; or, Mom and Dad need to let her become a grown up. In any case, good to see Michelle playing well and consistently. A star is reborn. For those who missed it: MW jumped to an early lead against Helen Alfredsson, lost it in the middle part, went up by two at hole #16, which ensured her a half point; lost #17 and then earned her full point by not losing #18. Very cool.

Seals, Potts and Byron Victorious with Help of Tiebreaker

Mike Seals, Greg Potts and Kevin Byron made six birdies over their first eight holes, then got themselves an unlucky bogey on their last hole to come in at five under in the Saturday Morning Scramble out at Lakeview. That tied them with the team of Doug Denson, Tarry Bratton and Bryant Trambaugh, who made five birds and four pars in their round. The Seals team then got the lucky card draw to win the scramble on the tiebreaker. Seven three-person teams went after the prize on a surprisingly cool, cloudy and windy day in August with scores ranging from the two minus fives at the top to the minus one of Junior Byron, Curt Johnson and Gary Webb that brought in the caboose. Senior League

This past week’s senior event was declared a weather event with the anticipated stormy weather that never materialized. Several teams did get their rounds in with the remaining scheduled to finish up at the default date and time, Monday, the 24th, at 9am. The league’s regular season ends with play on Thursday, the 27th. The Individual Flighted Tournament takes place the first two Thursdays in September.

Tuesday Men’s League

More changes at the top in the Tuesday Men’s League. Tracy Rayhill and Greg Potts took over first place in the Team competition, and Tracy did a double by reclaiming the top spot in the Individual competition. With three weeks to go in the season, several teams and even more individuals remain in contention to take the brass ring. Five teams are within 32 points of the top, including Virgil Harper and Gary LaMar, currently in sixth place. Jim Murphy sits in thirteenth place among the individuals but is within one hundred and fifty some points of the leader. Low scores for last week’s event were turned in by Virgil Harper and Greg Potts in the low net category with 30’s, Mark Potts shot a 32 for low gross, and Greg Potts and Tracy Rayhill fired a super team low score of 63 which played a big part in their vault to the top. Sharpshooters were Mark Jones, Mike Bird and Mark Potts with close to the pin shots, and Virgil Harper, Brent Courter and Kevin Byron with long putts. The Tuesday Men also have a flighted tournament for individuals coming up the first two weeks of September. Note: All league scores and standings can be found at www.golflakeview.com.

Seniors - Come on Down!

Senior League members, at least some of them, have their last Thursday round to make up this morning at 9am. Come on down and get a head start with a little bit of good golf on a Monday morning. Junior Byron and Wayne Pearl are looking to put a lock on the top spot in the team competition - each of them played some yesterday, loosening up, getting ready. As Junior would say: "We'll see."

Ben Wagler was out with JD Simmons playing nine holes in what has become almost a weekly ritual for the two of them. Ben, for the most part, has beat his buddy and did so again today.

She eventually came back around and avoided an even bigger crowd on her way towards the park.

-Michelle Wie leading the the way for the USA team at the Solheim Cup (tied at 8 points apiece). She plays Helen Alfredsson today in the singles matches.
-So when will the ladies have a match like this that includes the majority of the best players in the world, like Lorena Ochoa and the multitude of South Koreans that have dominated the ladies golf circuit these last several years?
-Wish the networks, rather than the Golf Channel, were broadcasting the Solheim Cup. (Guess who doesn't have dish or cable...)
-And just where are the big boys playing this week? Who's on the leaderboard? Go here if you interested. (Tiger will be playing next week.)

More Bits and Pieces

Photo: Eric looking at the Callaway Diablo driver that I bought up at Dicks in Bloomington a week ago. I'm happy with it and have not decided whether or not to put an extension in the shaft. It's very light - my old Snake Eye driver is heavy by comparison.

-Solheim Cup: The US ladies are up 4.5 to 3.5 after day one. Michelle Wie and Morgan Pressel went up against a couple of experienced dames from Europe (Catriona Matthew and Maria Hjorth) in the morning four-ball, got behind by two early, rallied to go up one and then stumbled on the final hole to finish with a tie and a half a point. Michelle pairs up with Christina Kim in their match this morning against Helen Alfredsson and Tania Elosegui. Christina would be a hoot to play a round with, don't you think?

-Lots of golfers out on a Friday evening which was ended with the quick movement of stormy weather into the area - lots of dark and fast moving clouds but not so much rain. Dindn't look that way though and everybody got off the couse in a hurry.

-Scramble today in about an hour. Come on out and get in on the fun.

From about.com, a match play primer. Had to see what the girls were doing at the Solheim Cup today - fourball:

Fourball Match Play
In Fourballs, each side consists of two players. Each player player his or her own ball throughout the round. On each hole, the low ball of the two players serves as that side's score. For example, on the first hole for Team A, Player 1 scores a 4 and Player 2 scores a 5, so the team score is 4. If Team A gets a 4 while Team B scores 5, then Team A wins the hole.

Around here we usually call that best score.

Bits and Pieces

-After yesterday's wrong prognostication on the weather - I declared the Senior League a rain event early because of the internet's imminent and dire warnings of a full day of stormy weather - several Senior League members have given me notice as a weather predictor. It wasn't all that long ago - several weeks - that I waited and waited and had everybody out there on a Thursday morning and then when the rains did not let up, called it a weather event. So, my pink slip is justly earned after these two miscalls. Yesterday turned out to be dry throughout the day and into the evening.

-Six of the fourteen teams did get their rounds in yesterday morning, and several more would have liked to but their opponents and/or partners had already gotten on with their day. Richard Swayze and I were among the ones that did play - against Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh - and got the bejeebers beat out of us (11-3). Should have waited...

-Mike Arvin wandered out for an evening stroll last night and wondered where the item was on the Wednesday night pickup skins and flags game between himself, Dave Wininger, Karry Stoll and me. He thought Karry had done a marvelous job at winning all the skins (five of them) with an eagle chip on #2 and then a par with a stroke on #5. Flags went to DW on #3 and myself on #7 and #9. And, yes, Karry did do a marvelous job - had his A game with him.

-Solheim Cup starts today at Sugar Grove, Illinois.

Senior League - Stormy Weather on a Thursday - default day and time: Monday, 9am

Looks like this area is in for all kinds of stormy weather today thus making the Senior League event for the day a 'rain event'. Players have through next Thursday's event to make up their round with their opponents. For starters, and this was suggested as a possible change by Tony Wease a while back, the default time and day is Monday at 9am. Thus, the make up date and time is set unless you get together with your opponents and change it to another time. Monday, 9am. And, of course, you do have that option - to choose another date and time.

Sherer and Johnson Win Special Competitions

Mark Sherer (above) and Curt Johnson claimed the special competitions at Lakeview yesterday in the Tuesday Men's League. Mark had his tee shot at #2 come to rest twenty feet from the pin to win the Long and Accurate competition in a field of twenty-four. This is the second year in a row that Mark has won the Long and Accurate prize in the Tuesday Men's League. Curt Johnson, in a field of twenty aspirants, won the Short and Accurate competition with a shot that was forty-eight feet to the barrel set at the 90 yard line in #2 fairway. Congrats to the winners.

Tuesday Men - August 18th Special Competitions

The Tuesday Men's League has two special competitions on August 18th, each having to do with play on the second hole. League members will have the option of going for a Long and Accurate tee shot - closest to the pin, 1st shot, on or off the green; or a Short and Accurate tee shot - closest to the barrel at the 90 yard line in the #2 fairway. Each competition has an entry fee of $1 which is in addition to the regular hole prize dollar for the day. Winner of each competition takes whatever is in the pot.

Paul Earles Aces #9 at Lakeview

Paul Earles of Elnora told his playing partners, Ray and Martha Hart, that "I sure can't find my ball" after hitting off of #9 tee box at Lakeview on Monday morning, the 17th of August, 2009. It was Ray who eventually found it, right there in the cup, giving Paul an unexpected hole-in-one. Paul used his 5 wood and a titleist ball to cover the hundred and twenty some yards from off of the dam to the green.

Paul's ace is the second of the year at Lakeview, as he joins Junior Byron in a pretty exclusive club.

Karry Stoll dropped a twenty-something putt on #6 for an eagle to cap a seven under round for the Dave Wininger, Larry Hembree, Karry Stoll and Tarry Bratton team in the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview. They followed the eagle with pars on their last two holes to go along with the six birdies they shot to open their march to victory. Four other teams competed for the prize and came in with scores ranging from six-under - Mike Kidwell, Noah Callahan, and George Templin, to the two-under, shot by the team of Trenton Kidwell, Joe Allen, Jack Nickless and Kevin Byron.

Community League

As expected, Adam Wagler did hang on to the top spot and is now the individual champion in this season’s Community League. Adam missed the final two weeks of the season with a broken bone in his foot but had built up an insurmountable lead before his injury. Bill Harder made it interesting during the final week, firing a net thirty-three and garnering fifty-four points to finish in second at 639 points, just fifteen points behind the champion. Ray Shaw, shooting the low net round of the week with a nifty thirty-one, finished in third place. In team play, Adam, with partner Tyson Stoll, claimed the championship with a total of 347 points. Bill Harder and Tarry Bratton finished second at 329 points while Clyde Wake and Bob Norris were third at 301 points. In the season-ending Individual Handicapped Tournament, Lucas Bird claimed the championship by firing a net sixty-three over the final two weeks, beating Ray Shaw by the thinnest of margins, a single stroke. Bill Harder, Noah Callahan and Richard Yoder finished in the third, fourth and fifth positions.

Thursday Senior League

Diane Bird and Pam Byron lit up the fairways and greens this last Thursday with the two of them coming in one-two in low net scores for the day and with each of them walking away with a hole prize. Diane stuck one close on #9 while Pam got herself the long putt on #8. Diane and JD Faris, subbing for Wilma Bateman, also got the low team round with a sterling sixty-three on the day. Other hole prize winners were Jack Nickless with a long putt at #6 and Richard Swayze with a close to the pin shot at #7. Mike Bird shot the low gross of the day with a nifty thirty-four. With two weeks to go in the regular season, both the team and the individual races are up for grabs. In the Individual competition, Rex Hudson leads Junior Byron by one point and Vic Wallace by seven. Several other players, including Mike Bird, Carroll Rayhill, Jack Nickless and Ray Shaw are well within striking distance. The Team competition finds Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron with a little more breathing room, up seventeen over Mike Bird and Richard Swayze, and twenty and a half points on Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz. In the thirty-six hole Individual Handicapped Tournament, Pam Byron leads the field after twenty-seven holes with a score of nine under par. Jack Nickless sits in second place at five under while Rex Hudson, Vic Wallace and Diane Bird are tied for third at four under.


Tuesday Men’s League

Change at the top was the order of the day in the Tuesday Men’s League. In Team competition, Terry Padgett and Gary Burris jumped into first, bumping Mike Kidwell and Joe Allen to second, twenty-four points back. The duo shot a net sixty-five on the day. In Individual competition, Mike Breeden came out of nowhere to take the lead over Tracy Rayhill, Gary Burris, Larry Sutton and Bric Parker. Mike is on a hot streak and has shot a thirty-seven and a thirty-eight over the past two events. Low scores for event eighteen include Keith Parsons with a net twenty-nine, Terry Butcher with a gross thirty-three, and the team of Terry Butcher and Jeff Doyle with a nifty sixty-four. Sharpshooters were Jeff Doyle, Larry Sutton and Mark Potts on close to the pin shots, and John Butcher, Derek Gilbertson and Warren Atkison with long putts.

TW is YE Yanged!

Oh my golly. Tiger loses a major after having the lead going into the final day. Has never happened. But he got himself out played by one guy: YE Yang from South Korea. The Tiger shots we are used to seeing went the other way yesterday - think the chip in eagle at 14 and then the rescue wood to 8 feet on the 18th and the birdie putt (Tiger should have putted out and given Yang the whole stage, me thinks). Of course, Tiger was not making putts and one could attribute that to not getting his iron shots close enough. Like Ben Hogan says - if you want to improve your putting, get the ball closer to the hole (with your iron play). Will be interesting to see if YE Yang has the same impact on Asian golfing as Se Ri Pak did ten plus years ago (you remember, she won the Open and all the little girls in South Korea wanted to be just like her - and, by golly, a bunch of them have turned out to be just that, dominating the LPGA these last few years - go here for an excellent article by Eric Anderson about Se Ri).

Of note: I did go out on the golf course after Tiger's last bogey putt and shared the news with Tracy Rayhill, Mike Arvin, Curt Johnson, Scott Schutte and Karry Stoll. Of course, I had to make it interesting so I took them back to the 18th tee and then the shots in the fairway and then the approach shots - leaving out who had the eight footer and who had the one just off the green. Told them that one guy got a birdie, the other a bogey, and they had to guess who did what. Four of the five gave the birdie to Tiger; Karry was the only one who picked Yang.

Lakeview-Washington Challenge in September

The third edition of the Lakeview Golf Course and Washington Country Club Challenge is coming up the last two Mondays in September. The first eighteen holes is tentatively scheduled to start at 9am at Washington on the 21st with the second eighteen the following Monday at Lakeview, also starting at 9am. The first two nine hole games at WCC will be the scramble and then the Best Ball. The Alternate Shot and Individual games follow at Lakeview. The Washington bunch has won the first two editions of this match play event. If you want to play on the Lakeview squad, stop in and sign up at the clubhouse or let me know electronically. Senior Open at Country Oaks

On Friday, August 28th, Country Oaks is hosting a Senior Open. Eighteen holes of stroke play with three flights based on age - 50's, 60's and those 70 and older. Gross and net winners in each flight. Tee times starting at 8:30 and running till 11am. Non-member fee is $35 and that includes range balls. Call the Oaks for more information and to sign up - 812-486-3300.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

The majority of the players in the Tuesday Men's League have completed their rain event round of August 4th. Will have some of kind of temporary report on the wall this afternoon - players have till the end of today to get their rounds in. I haven't peeked to see who's in first in either competitions. Let me see now: Trenton Kidwell and Chris Bledsoe came in yesterday and played their round in three over; Joe Allen and Mike Kidwell played their round last Tuesday in two over. That means the leaders, Mike K and Joe A, dodged that bullet. Might be others in the air though. (Just checked: Padgett and Burris, the third place team, came in at one under.) Tracy Rayhill came in at two under and Buck Holland at even par, each giving Bric Parker, the leader in the Individual competition, some concern. Will know more in a few hours. Then it all will change again, maybe, with today's play. Chance for pop up showers again today. Come on down, guys, and don't forget to wear sun screen and to stay hydrated - the sun and the heat make it like an oven out there.

Bird, Potts and Hembree Win Scramble at 5 Under

Mike Bird, Greg Potts and Larry Hembree went two under on the par threes and added birdies at two, four and five to come in with a winning score of thirty in the Saturday morning scramble at Lakeview. Two of the three other three person teams, Wayne Souerdike/Curt Johnson/Kevin Byron and Tyler Kidwell/DJ Harder/Gary Webb, found eagles on six but also found bogeys in their rounds of thirty two. The fourth team, Mike Kidwell, Joe Allen and Bric Parker, also finished at thirty-two.

Community League

Tyson Stoll shot a brilliant net 27 to take the lead in the Community League’s Individual Handicapped Tournament that closes out the season. He is closely followed by Richard Yoder, who is one back, and Lucas Bird, Mike F. Graber and Linda Strosnider who find themselves two behind the leader. In the regular season, the last week of play finds Adam Wagler and Tyson Stoll in firm control of the team competition with a forty-eight point lead. In second place, Tarry Bratton and Bill Harder are up twenty-one over Noah Callahan and Chris Taylor. In the individual competition, Bill Harder, Duane Wagler, Ray Shaw and Chris Taylor are duking it out for second place with Adam Wagler having all but a lock on the top position with a seventy-seven point advantage. Low scores for the second to last week of the season include the twenty-seven by Stoll for low net, a team best net of sixty-one by Mike F. Graber and Duane Wagler, and a four-way tie for low gross at thirty-six between Noah Callahan, Greg Potts, Mark Potts and Duane Wagler.

Thursday Senior League

The Seniors got two events on the books with the completion of the rain event of July 30 and the current play of August 6. Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron kept their top position in the Team standings with a loss to the second place team, Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz, and a win versus the team of Jack Lents and Jack Nickless. Dick Barber joined Pam Byron with the low net of the day at five under, and paired with Terry LaMar in beating down the third place team, Mike Bird and Richard Swayze, 10.5 to 3.5. In the Individual race, Rex Hudson jumped to the top with net rounds of 32 and 34, and leads Junior Byron by one point and Carroll Rayhill by four. Other low scores of the day went to Junior Byron with a gross of thirty-six, and the teams of Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh and Dave Strange and Clyde Wake with net sixty-fives. Sharpshooters were Clyde Wake and Vic Wallace with long putts and Wayne Pearl and Jack Lents with close to the pin shots. In the concurrent thirty-six hole handicapped tournament, after eighteen holes the leader board has Rex Hudson in first at four under, Pam Byron in second at three under, and Dave Strange in third at two under. Eight players are tied for fourth at one under.


Tuesday Men’s League

The Men’s League suffered through a day of stormy weather and was declared a weather event at 5pm. Players will get their rounds in prior to the next event.

Honey of a Shot!

Tiger's approach, from 180 yards, into #16 yesterday which ended up about four inches from the cup. Small landing area, deep gorsey stuff long and water short, tournament on the line. The Harrington lad tries to duplicate and ends up getting into the gorse and then into the water and finishes with a triple bogey eight to TW's birdie. From one down, Tiger goes three up on the hole and then walks to a four stroke victory with another birdie at the final hole. Wow! And that is why people watch Tiger.

Mike's Tip for the day

Strike the ball well. Practice hitting the ball squarely, even with your putter. It makes a hugh difference.

Seniors - Come on Down!

Second week of four in the Individual Handicapped Tournament. Also the completion of last week's rained out event. (Schedule is here.) Jack Lents and Jack Nickless take on the front runners, Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron - don't know what Junior and Wayne did with Tony Wease and Charlie Sheetz in last week's makeup; might play them later today. Do know that Richard Swayze and Mike Bird played Diane Bird and Wilma Bateman and came away with a win, the first one in four weeks (tumble, tumble - we grew tired of the rumble and the mumble...). Carroll Rayhill sits on top of the Individual standings - expect he would love to stay there more than a week or two. Come on down, Seniors, and bring your A games. No sense holding back anymore - go for broke.
