Butcher, Divine, Shaw and Allen Win Scramble at Lakeview
The team of Josh Butcher, Jordan Divine, Ray Shaw and Joe Allen used eagles on the par fives and a three foot putt for birdie on #7 by Joe Allen on their way to seven under in the Saturday morning scramble at Lakeview. That gave them the victory over six other teams, three of whom came in at six under. Second place, decided on the cards, was taken by Trenton Kidwell, DJ Harder, Terry Bratton and Bryant Trambaugh.

Chipping Tip from Utley
Here's a short video by Stan Utley on chipping. He likens it to shooting a freethrow where basketball players who make freethrows bend their knees in the process. And in chipping, he suggests a little pivot. I tried it out and it works. Now to get it to work when it counts... (I just ordered his two books, one on putting and one on the short game. What I'm looking for is a more accurate 100 yard shot; or 75 yards or 50 yards. But chipping and putting improvement would also be welcome.)
Community League Roster
Here's the roster for the Community League which is getting underway this week. As of this morning, we have 22 teams and one individual playing. Still time to get on board. First week's play ends tomorrow evening.

Golf Basics: The Grip
Got an email from about.com and spent the time looking at one of the tips, one on a very basic part of the game - the grip. And, much to my surprise, found out my own grip had deteriorated over time to something not resembling the perfect grip at all. So, take a gander at this video and see if your own grip has withstood the test of time and frustration. Like me, you just might be surprised.

Thursday Seniors - Come on Down!
Looks like a little weather in our area but nothing to hold down Senior League play. Might have a delay somewhere along the way but for the most part, a good day to play some golf. We start at nine.

Celebration Dance
Diane Bird and Shirley Jeffers were out for their Community League round today and here are shown as they finished. One could imagine Diane asking Shirley what (in heaven's name) she was doing now in the middle of the parking lot?! Well, Shirley had a straight forward answer: "I'm doing the I-got-a-par-on-three dance!" And she did. So there. I bet she was a cheerleader back when she was in high school. Anybody remember when?
Tuesday Men League Correction
Low Net team score yesterday was a 58 shot by Curt Johnson and Bric Parker. Super score, Curt and Bric. And super game for Curt who shot a 37.

Wouldn't think that Jack Divine had just eagled #5 as he goes about the business of getting ready for the next hole but he had with a shot from seventy yards out. Meanwhile, Tim Voegerl uses a little body english to try and get his ball to go in the hole to no avail.
Lee Wininger came out and subbed for Dave Wininger and here uses his golden wand to advance his ball some on his way to #8 green.
Scott Arthur uses just a little hope, maybe even a prayer, here as his ball teeters on the lip of #9's cup. It worked and he got his par to finish a round with a net 33.
On the other hand, TJ McAtee found himself in fluff hell off the left side of #9 green for his second shot. He ended up taking a double bogey at nine which followed a double bogey at #8 which followed a birdie and a hole prize at #7 which had gotten him even for his round. He finished with a disappointing 39 gross but a not so disappointing 31 net.

Derek Gilbertson, Weston Muessig and Mark Sherer watching Josh Huff's tee shot on #6. Weston shared the low gross for the day with James Hager and Cory Rayhill. The three of them shot nifty one under par 34's.
TJ Howell filled in for Terry Butcher and is seen here watching his shot into #6 green with Jeff Doyle. TJ was one of several first time subs at the course Tuesday and managed to shoot his handicap and come in with a net par for the evening.
The Green boys, Rich and Ed, here trying the hats off approach to getting a good score during their league play. Worked ok for Rich who came in with a net par, and not so well for Ed who came in at four over.
Duane Wagler was another of our first time subs and is here teeing off at #1 with hopes of firing at least a 41, his average over his last several games at Lakeview. Wasn't to be as he shot a so so 44. Not all that bad considering the results of a couple of other subs (not mentioning names here...).

Tuesday Men and the Weather
We've had a lot of weather on Tuesdays this year, disrupting league play. Today our forecast is for rain but so far none has materialized. And, even if we do get some, the showers may be brief and cause just a delay - the radar southwest of us does show patches of green. Keeping fingers crossed and as of now every thing is a go. Looking for some excellent scores this afternoon and evening. Expect Tony Wease, our leader, and Charlie Sheetz are finishing up about now.
Tuesday Men - Come on Down!
The weather is lovely and everything has been scrubbed clean by yesterday's rains. Do you remember that ten years ago the Men's League had a Wednesday edition as well? It was a smaller version of Tuesday (which was smaller, too) and had some of the same players that we see today. But others as well. For instance, Jim Mundy and Elmer Graber who played with Tim Voegerl and Bob Panko. Clyde Wake came out with Bob Norris back then; the two are now our oldest golfers (in the Community League) with both in the mid eighties. Steve Padgett and Jerry Tredway also came out and hit the ball around a bit. Jerry and I had 34's this day ten years ago, and Eric Bird, the guy who keeps the green stuff green out here, shot a 36.
Back here in the present, think it's about time we had another league hole-in-one. Got the par threes ready and willing, and a couple of par fours as well. The fours are #2, which had a couple of almost back to back aces a few years back (Dave Wininger and Bob Walton); and #5 which several of our players can now reach with their monster drives. (Which reminds me: Michelle Wie averaged 290 yards at the Corning last week. Didn't want you long guys to get too puffed up in the heads. Some of those other young ladies on the LPGA, half the size we are, average 260 and then some. My oh my. But, remember, most of the shots on the score card are on and around the green.) League's Individual leader, Tony Wease, has been sitting on top for three weeks now but lots of guys in position to send him packing if he lets up at all, something he did a bit last week. Come on down, guys, and take a shot or two or forty and see where your skill and luck and get you.

Senior League News
The Seniors had a lovely day for golf this past Thursday and the grounds even dried out some to provide a little additional roll of the golf ball. At the end of the day's play, Rex Hudson continued to sit on top of the Individual standings with Carroll Rayhill, Vic Wallace and Dick Barber close behind. The team competition also saw the same leaders at the top with both the Bird/Swayze team and the Wallace/McLaughlin team tied after beating their opponents for the day by scores of nine to five. Patty Bowling and super sub Jack Nickless shot the low net rounds at seven under par while Al Kavanaugh and Mike Bird tied for low gross at 39. Al Kavanaugh and Jack Nickless had the low net team score with a sterling 62. Sharpshooters included Patty Bowling, Pam Byron, Joe Gray and Jack Butcher.
Tuesday Men's League
The Tuesday golf league also had a lovely day to play. Team competition leaders at the end of the day's play were Doug Denson and Buck Holland with several teams nipping at their heels. Mike Kidwell and Joe Allen, Greg Potts and Tracy Rayhill, and Junior Byron and Kevin Byron were within seven points of the top spot. In the Individual standings, Tony Wease held on to his top position at 537 points with Mike Kidwell and Bric Parker in second and third place with 518 and 513 points. Low scores were carded by Trey Kidwell with a net 25, his best effort of the year; and Junior Byron with a gross 34, also his best of the year. Brent Courter and Larry Sutton turned in the low net team score with a splendid 62. Hole prize winners included Chris Bledsoe, Bill Carrico and Phil Eyler with long putts, and Buck Holland, Jeff Doyle and Terry Padgett with close to the pin shots. Of note: Three players had a birdie feast during their game: Weston Muessig, Mike Kidwell and Junior Byron each had three of them on the day. George Templin and Tyler Kidwell led in pars made with seven each.

Late Saturday Golfers
Clint Knepp forgot his golf shoes but that didn't stop him from getting enough traction for this shot at #3 last night.
Mike Arvin blasting out of the sand at #2 as Rosie and Lee Wininger watch.
Le me see now. Rob and Rich and Adam and, is that Lucas? Scrambling at #2 in an after dinner game.
A young couple from Kansas came out with Stanley Graber. Here the young lady demonstrates a pretty full body turn, and a straight left arm, on her tee shot at #1.

Potts, Wininger, Nickless and Bratton Triumph
Photo: Jack Nickless, Tarry Bratton, Mark Potts and Lee Wininger.
Mark Potts, Lee Wininger, Jack Nickless and Tarry Bratton ran away from the others in a sterling outing at Lakeview earlier today. The foursome shot a very nifty eight under to easily win the Saturday Morning Scramble over four other teams. An eagle on hole number six along with birdies on all but number three and nine gave the group their final score of 27. Two teams tied for second at five under; a fourth team came in at 31 with the fifth team shooting a 32. Details will be available tonight at the course website.
Update: Details here.

More Thursday Golfers
Pam Byron watching Patty Bowling hit one at #8. They each got a hole prize in the Senior League's morning play. Patty also tied for low net round of the day with a seven under par. Pretty nifty.
Ned and Heidi Duncan from Arkansas getting started on their round today. They have been up in the area for some time now, helping get the telecommunications lines in place and working while living over in Montgomery. You'll find them over at Lakeview every now and then sharpening up their golf skills and having a little fun - note Ned - at the same time.

More Wednesday Golfers
Stephen Bradley, Ben Hogan (swinging), and Clinton Burch came out for a brush up on their games yesterday afternoon. Here, Ben fires away evan as emergency vehicles race north. A little later on, Clinton got his first eagle ever over on #4 with a drive that went way left into #5 fairway and an approach shot that gave him a long eagle putt, which he got to fall. More than one way to play this game, right, Clinton? Congrats and may you have many more of those eagles. Might as well throw in a hole-in-one somewhere along the line.
Thursday Seniors - Come on Down!
We start at nine and it already is a lovely day. Going to get better. The bugs are a nuisance so bring vanilla extract or your favorite little nastie repellent.

Wednesday's Youngest Golfer
Trey Knepp was out with his dad Clint along with several of his dad's friends. Here he hits a tee shot at #5 which went just a little to the right. Trey also plays baseball up in Odon and is part of a kestone combination that includes Ian Bird, Eric's youngest son and my grandson.
