Kidwell, Byron, Potts and Blake Tame Lakeview

In the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview Golf Course lastSaturday, Tyler Kidwell, Junior Byron, Greg Potts and Roger Blake made it look easy by firing a nine under round of 27 to win in what turned out to be a cakewalk.  The foursome eagled hole #2 and birdied all but #5 in a team effort that saw everything turning up spades in a five stroke win.  Three other teams of four participated with each of them coming in at four under par.

Thursday Match Play League Notes

Susan Fee won the the Individual Handicapped Tournament last Thursday by shooting a net round of two under par which gave her a twelve under par score for the 36 hole tournament.  Jim Bateman, who started the day tied with Susan, shot a net round of one over and ended up tied for second with Pam Byron.  The Fees also took over first place in the team competition by defeating the Batemans, 10.5 to 3.5, in their head to head face off.   For the day, Dave Brown had a brilliant round of 37 to tie Mike Bird for the low gross of the day and easily won the low net with a 26.  Carroll Rayhill carded a net 30 to place second behind Brown.  John Chapman became the third player in the last three weeks to sit at the top of the individual standings.  He replaces Wayne Pearl, last week's leader, who is now in second eleven points back.  Brown and playing partner Ray Shaw, had the low net team score of the day with a 64.  Hole prizes were claimed by Joe Gray at #7 and Al Kavanaugh at both #8 and #9.  The group average for event 10 was 46.14, up almost a stroke from the previous week.  Next week: Mid season scramble.

Community League Notes

Allen Yoder shot a net 31 in last week's play to tie Jason Graber for the championship of the Individual Handicapped Tournament.  The two of them shot 36 hole rounds of 15 under par to outdistance a group of three, Virgil Harper, Shirley Jeffers and Dale Yoder, who tied for third place at minus eight.  In regular season play, Allen Yoder and partner Dale Yoder took over the top spot in team competition and lead Jason Graber and Perry Yoder by 13 points and Jack Lents and Virgil Harper by 15 points.  Lucas Bird, who shot the low net round of the week with a 28, teamed up with his granddad, Mike Bird, to shoot the low net team round as well with a score of 62.  Jeremy Graber and Duane Wagler had the low gross rounds of the week, each firing 37's.  The group averaged 46.03 strokes for the week, up almost a stroke from the previous week.

Tuesday Men's League Results for the Individual Handicapped Tournament and Event 10

Tuesday Men's League results for the Individual Handicapped Tournament and event 10 are posted here.  Congratulations to Mike Kidwell, Mike Seals and Karry Stoll for their 36 hole net score of 125 to share the trophy in the individual handicapped tournament.  Data for event 9 is in the system and the standings reflect those results.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Final week of the Individual Handicapped Tournament with Mike Kidwell and Karry Stoll perched atop the leaderboard.  (I did post that here.)  Way too many players still very much in contention - 10 within five strokes of the leaders.  If you are playing this morning, enjoy the cooler weather but also beware the possibility of a storm or two - looks north of us and staying there to me.  Afternoon and evening players - enjoy the warm and humid conditions.  Course conditions: still drying out from all the rain we've had.  Some run in the fairways; some softness on the greens.

Reminder:  Next week is the mid season two person handicapped scramble.  Subs are invited to play alongside regulars or make a team of their own.

Changes/Corrections to News Article

Corrected the Community League's Individual Handicapped Tournament results after three weeks - the gross scores for the third week were added to the net scores of the prior two and that resulted in a substantially different leaderboard - that has been corrected.  Also added the tentative results of the Tuesday Men's Individual Handicapped Tournament - not all players have completed their rounds from last week's storm interrupted play.  (Mike Kidwell and Karry Stoll have taken the top position with net scores of 92 through three weeks.)  Corrected copy of the news report is here.

Tuesday Men - June 15 is a Rain Event

Needed another hour and a half to finish league today.  But Mother Nature had other plans and sent a nice little storm our way which had league golfers running to the clubhouse and their cars.  Those golfers who did not finish their rounds head back to the tee box on the hole they did not finish and go on from there.  Here's the appropriate section from the league information sheet:

Rain Solutions:

If afternoon and evening league play is disrupted by rain or other inclement weather conditions, the following goes into effect:

     a. players already finished with their rounds - rounds entered and counted;
     b. players who have completed part of their round - finish their round within the next seven days starting on hole following last completed hole.  Ghost substitutes will be entered until round is completed;
     c. players who have not started their rounds - play their rounds within the next seven days.  Ghost substitutes will be entered until round is played;
     d. hole prizes will not be given out on the affected date but will be doubled (with each player participating giving a total of $2) on the following date of play;
     e. USGA rules apply and players improperly completing a scorecard will be disqualified for the event.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

-Week 3 of the Individual Handicapped Tournament.  Kevin Byron still has the rest of the crew at his back and, yes, that worries him a bit.  Dad Junior tells him to worry about him and him alone (pretty good advise).  Fourteen players within five shots of the lead including Mike Kidwell who sits in second place poised to do a bunch better than his five handicap would indicate.  Guess it's the time to look at the handicaps and see who is capable of shooting four or five under the next two weeks.  Count Mike in with his five (this week) but also Kevin Byron with his nine.  No predictions from me - way too many players still very much in the hunt.  Got a guess?  Put it in the comments.

-Wonder if a zero handicapper has ever led the league before?  Got one now - Doug Denson who moved to a zero just this last week and also moved to the top of the standings.  Only one other zero guy this week, Mark Potts.

-Course is lush with new grass and soft with the recent rains.  And more rain in the neighborhood today.  Be prepared and be ready for a slight delay if we get a bit more of the wet stuff.

Wininger, Knepp and Allen Win Saturday Morning Scramble

Dave Wininger, Abe Knepp and Joe Allen fired a six under at the Lakeview Golf Course this past Saturday to come in tied for the top spot with the team of Tyler Kidwell, Mike Seals and Marvin Graber.  A tiebreaker was used to determine the Wininger/Knepp/Allen team as the winner.  Three other teams participated with each of them coming in at five under.

Thursday Match Play League Notes

Jim Bateman, at 10 under par, leads the Individual Handicapped Tournament at the midway point.  Jim shot a 44 with a net 31 on the day and is up on Susan Fee by 2 strokes, Pam Byron by 3, and Junior Byron by 4.  Junior had the best score of the day both for gross and net, an even par 35 gross, which included two birds and five pars, and a net of 29.  The Batemans continue their fine play, easily handling the course team, Paul Weisheit and Leroy Streepy, by a score of 12 to 2.  After eight events, they have a four point lead in the team standings over second place Frank and Susan Fee, and 16.5 points over the team of Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron.  Mike Bird continued his par shooting, getting eight on his card in a round of 36 and held onto first place in the individual standings with a nine point advantage on Jim Bateman in second place and a thirteen point advantage on Wayne Pearl in third.  Hole prizes for the day went to Junior Byron at #7, Wayne Pearl at #8 and Ken Hudson at #9.  Average gross score for the day was 46.93, up .3 of a stroke over last week.

Tuesday Men: Week 2 of Individual Handicapped Tournament and Event 8

Mark Potts and Mike Kidwell returned to form last night, Mark firing a low gross round of 33 while Mike, after a fix from the pro down in French Lick, fired a second best 34 and a net 28 which put him in a tie with Bric Parker for low net of the day.  Doug Denson contined to play well, coming in with an even par 35 which will get him to that magical zero handicap for next week's event.  Mark Potts led the birdie parade with five while Junior Byron and Derek Gilbertson each came in with three.  Mike Arvin had the only eagle of the night, that at #2 after his drive cleared the creek, jumped the sandtrap and came to a stop five feet in front of the cup.  Doug Denson had the most pars with 7; Short Jeffers and Rob Rollins had 6.  Two teams shared the low net team score with 61's: Curt Johnson and Bric Parker along with Joe Allen and Mike Kidwell.  Hole prizes were claimed by Terry LaMar, Mark Potts and Mike Kidwell on the par 3's while Scott Arthur, John Drake and Joe Allen made long putts.  Group average gross on the day was 42.12, up .4 from last week's average.  At the top in the regular season standings: John Drake and Tom McAtee in team competition; Doug Denson in individual competition.

Community League: Week 2 of the Individual Handicapped Tournament and Event 2

In the Lakeview Community League, Jason Graber and Shirley Jeffers share the lead of the Individual Handicapped Tournament at the midway point, each eleven under par after eighteen holes.  Virgil Harper, Jack Lents and Allen Yoder are tied for third with scores of seven under par.  In regular season play, the Jack Lents and Virgil Harper team have a two point lead over Jason Graber and Peryy Yoder in team competition.  In individual competition, Jason Graber enjoys a seven point advantage over Shirley Jeffers and a fourteen point lead over Jack Lents and Allen Yoder.  Low scores for the league's second event go to Mike Seals for both the net and gross.  Mike's under par round of 34 resulted in a net of 29.  Shirley Jeffers had the second lowest net score at seven under while Duane Wagler, with a 36, had the second best gross score.

Bits and Pieces

-Lots of couples at the golf course yesterday, including Shirley and Short Jeffers who closed up shop for us.  Shirley also brought in some homemade brownies and reminded me that one was for Diane.  Just want Shirley to know that Diane was eating one of them thirty minutes later.  I waited for an hour - had some dinner first - but if I had known how good they were a little sooner - they were absolutely scrumptious! - Shirley was exactly right in reminding me about sharing.  Would have been tempted mightily to keep on going with the lot of them.  Yummy.  Thanks, Shirley.

-Other couples: Ken and Sharon Frye, Maggie and Ed Schnarr, Frank and Susan Fee, Junior and Pam Byron (sorta together), Jim and Leanne (golf babe) Love, and Walter and Mindy Henrichsen.

-Morning scramble at 9am tomorrow - as usual.  Not so next week - Summerfest will be at Lakeview with an 18 hole scramble.  Got your team yet?

-The lady pros are playing just across the border over in Springfield, IL - State Farm ClassicMichelle Wie is loving the back nine and not loving the front nine through eleven holes of her second round.  Minus six on the back, plus two on the front.  She's seven back of the leader, M.J. Hur who's at minus eleven.

-My Golf Babe of the Day: Na Yeon Choi, another young South Korean who's playing well over in Springfield.  In fact, she just tied for the lead with M.J. Hur.

Tip of the Day: Be decisive (or, don't hesitate once you've made your swing decision).  Found myself short of my target three different times yesterday during league play because I let hesitation get in the way of my decision.  That would be a bit of lack of confidence in my swing decision and a resultant backing off and getting a 70% instead of the 100% desired result.  Fortunately, I was able to get up and down on two of those three shots, but it also left me chipping instead of putting, putting always being the more desired activity.  In short:  Once you make your decision, execute with full confidence and ban all thoughts to the contrary from your mind.

Jim Bateman, at 10 under par, leads the Individual Handicapped Tournament at the midway point.  Jim shot a 44 with a net 31 on the day and is up on Susan Fee by 2 strokes, Pam Byron by 3, and Junior Byron by 4.  Junior had the best score of the day both for gross and net, an even par 35 gross which included two birds and five pars, and a net of 29.

Kevin Byron is still on top of the Individual Handicapped Tournament after a round of 44 and a net 33.  His 18 hole score of 59 leads Bric Parker and Mike Kidwell by two strokes and Dennis Brosmer, John Drake, Greg Potts, Rob Sterling, and Dave Strange by three strokes.  An additional 17 players are within 8 strokes of the leader and well within striking distance with two weeks to go. At the top in the standings: John Drake and Tom McAtee in team competition; Doug Denson in individual competition.

My Golf Babe of the Day

Photo: My golf babe of the day: Leanne Love, who was out playing with her hubby, Jim, last night.  She and Jim squeezed in after the majority of the Tuesday Men got started (actually, just Mike Arvin, Mark Sherer and myself left to head out) and a group of four from the Community League who were out tempting the golf gods to do something with all the rain in the area.  Other than a few widely scattered and inconsequential sprinkles, we all played dry.  Well, other than the times we splashed a golf ball with an errant shot.  Note:  I wonder if Leanne is on contract with Mizuno?  If that's one of their drivers, I bet she is.

Tuesday Men's League Results

Results are posted here.  Kevin Byron holds a slim two stroke lead over Mike Kidwell and Bric Parker after 18 holes of the 36 hole Individual Handicapped Tournament.  It's a three stroke lead over a host of others.  What fun!

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Neat things that could happen today:

-Terry Butcher and Doug Denson could fire a third straight round in the 32-33 range.

-Kevin Byron could shoot another net 26.

-Tracy and Cory Rayhill could shoot a pair of 35's for the second week in a row.

-Mark Potts could return to form and join Terry and Doug in that 32-33 range.  He and Dad, Greg, could shoot a gross 70 as a team.

-Mark Sherer and I could shoot a gross 70 as well.

-Hard working Tom McAtee could spend a third straight week on top of the individual standings.

-Phil Eyler and Doug Denson could get their handicaps down to the big Zero and join Terry Butcher and Mark Potts at that lofty plateau.

-John Drake could get another two hole prizes to repeat last week's claims at #7 and #9.

-A second golfer could get a complimentary cart card from Diane by getting birds on the first two holes.  Doug Denson was the first to get one by doing that last Tuesday.

-Somebody, anybody, could get a hole-in-one.

Note:  Watch out for weather today.  Looks like we are going to have stuff in the area.

Thursday Match Play League Notes

First nine holes of the 36 hole Individual Handicapped Tournament was played on Thursday, the 3rd of June, with Jim Bateman  firing the low net score of the day, a nifty 29, 6 under par.  Three players share second place at 4 under par: Jack Lents, Susan Fee and Pam Byron.  Bateman and playing partner, Wilma Bateman, also remained on top in the regular season team standings, trumping Clyde Wake and Dave Strange by a score of 11.5 to 2.5.  The Batemans also had the low net team score of the day, a 63.  Frank and Susan Fee are in second place in the team standings; they crushed their opponents of the day, Ken Hudson and Carrol Rayhill by a score of 12 to 2.  Low gross score was turned in by Mike Bird with a nine par even par score of 35.  Walter Henrichsen's 39 was the second best as were his 6 pars.  Bird leads the Individual standings and is followed by Wayne Pearl, Jim Bateman and John Chapman.  Hole prizes were claimed by Ken Hudson at #7 and #8 while Jack Butcher got the one at #9 for the second week in a row.  Average gross score for the day was 46.64, down from the 47.11 of the previous week and the second lowest for the season.  Event one's average of 46.36 remains the low for the year.  Hole #6 played the hardest on the day at 1.6 strokes over it's par 5, while hole #2 played the easiest at .72 strokes over it's par of 4.

Tuesday Men's League Notes

Terry Butcher had a five birdie afternoon last Tuesday and turned in the low gross with a sterling 32.  Doug Denson also had a good afternoon with three birds and a score of 33.  Kevin Byron had the low net of the day, a very nifty 26 on a gross of 40, and is the leader of the Individual Handicapped Tournament after nine holes.  He leads Tracy Rayhill by three strokes, and is four up on Dennis Brosmer, Doug Denson, John Drake and Greg Potts.  Hole prize winners on the day were John Drake (2) and Skip Ackerman on close to the pin shots, and Terry Padgett, Dennis Brosmer and Jon Boyd on the long putts.  Low net team score was a tie at 63 by the Terry Butcher/Rob Sterling team and the John Drake/Tom McAtee team.  Leaders in the standings after seven events are Doug Denson and Buck Holland in team competition and Tom McAtee in the individual competition.  On the day, 42 of 59 players shot net par or better, 35 of them in the better category.  Group average gross score was 41.80, a new low for the season.

Community League Season Underway

Lakeview Golf Course's Community League got underway during the week of May 30th.  Seventeen two person teams are participating in this summer league where the golfers play their round at their convenience sometime during the week.  For the initial week of the season, Jack Lents and Allen Yoder came out clicking on all cylinders, each shooting sterling net 29's.  That puts them on top of the individual standings as well as tied for first in the Individual Handicapped Tournament, a four week, 36 hole event to start the season.  In team standings, Allen Yoder and Dale Yoder are on top after firing a net 60.  Second place is held by the team of Jason Graber and Perry Yoder who combined for a net score of 62.  Low gross score was Short Jeffer's 37 with Mike Bird's 38 taking second.

Sherer, Knepp, Allen and Nickless Win Saturday Scramble at Lakeview

On Saturday, May 29th, Joe Allen chipped in for eagle at #5 and then rolled in a 25 footer at #9 to do his share in helping teammates  Mark Sherer, Darvin Knepp and Jack Nickless win the Saturday scramble at Lakeview.  The foursome finished at eight under par for the nine holes and won the event on a card draw tie breaker as the team of Dave Wininger, Greg Potts, Abe Knepp and Trey Kidwell also finished at eight under.  Mike Bird, Wayne Souerdike, Gaby Love and Curt Johnson at six under par finished third in the five team competition.

Bits and Pieces

Photo: Hannah LaMar, celebrated Lion tennis star, finishing up a little painting out at the golf course this past Thursday.

-John Wooden dies.  What a great person.  Don't ever remember anybody making a big deal out of the fact that his 88 game wining streak was broken in South Bend (at Notre Dame), a city where he spent nine years as coach and teacher at South Bend Central.  Here's Wooden's idea of getting after a referee (from the link):

"Dadburn it, you saw him double-dribble down there!" went a typical Wooden complaint to an official. "Goodness gracious sakes alive!"
Don't expect you would hear anything close to that nowadays or even back then.

-Lakeview Community League well under way.  Seventeen teams registered and on the books.  First week's results should be out later today or tomorrow.

-Eric and his boys, Lucas and Ian, and I went out last night and got our rounds in (for the Community League).  The first time any of them have played this year though each has spent many hours at the golf course.  Each of us used up our handicaps, and then some.  Went down to Dairy Master for a bite to eat afterwards.

-Steve Gootee brought in Tom Coyne's A Course Called Ireland.  The author takes a long walk around Ireland looking for "a Country, a Pint, and the Next Tee".  Sounds like a pretty neat thing to do with several months of your life.  Don't know about the walking part though.

-Susan and Frank Fee followed us around the golf course last night, being comfortable taking their time as we went about chasing our balls down and getting them onto the green and then into the hole.  Must have suited Susan just about right - she matched her best ever nine hole score at Lakeview, a nifty 39.

-Mark Sherer and his son, Jansen, along with Chuck Baker and Tommy Flynn, were also late Saturday golfers.

-Hope Tiger has a decent round, like 10 under, later this afternoon.  Expect the youngster, Ricky Fowler, will continue to play very well to get a big win at the Memorial.  Btw, did you hear Jack Nicklaus talking about his honeymoon during the rain delay yesterday?  About how few women get the chance to see such great golf courses on their honeymoon?  Three, I think he said.  And did you know that the Golden Bear has small hands - wears a men's small golf glove.

-Best get on with my day.  Diane still up in South Bend at a college reunion (St. Mary's).  Back on late tomorrow.  Daughter Danielle at home with her new baby, Jane Annabeth, now all of five days old.  Welcome to our world, little Jane.

Bateman and playing partner, Wilma Bateman, also remained on top in the regular season team standings, trumping Clyde Wake and Dave Strange (making his initial appearance of the season!) by a score of 11.5 to 2.5. Walter Henrichsen's 39 was the second best for the day as were his 6 pars.  Bird leads the Individual standings and is followed by Wayne Pearl, Jim Bateman and John Chapman.  Hole prizes were claimed by Ken Hudson at #7 and #8 while Jack Butcher got the one at #9 for the second week in a row.  Average gross score for the day was 46.64, down from 47.11 of the previous week and the second lowest for the season.  Event one's average of 46.36 remains the low for the season.  Hole #6 played the hardest on the day at 1.6 strokes over it's par 5, while hole #2 played the easiest at .72 strokes over it's par of 4.

Bits and Pieces - My Golf Babe of the Day

My golf babe of the day: Kyanna Strange who was out on Monday with Travis Bullock and Megan Dyal.  She was asked to join them on the outing and said she would only if she didn't have to play.  So she kept them company and agreed to the photo at the end of play.

Notes on Tuesday Men's League Results

-Terry Butcher had a five birdie afternoon and missed a couple of short putts that would have made his 32 even sweeter.  Along with his 33 of last week, that makes a 65 for the last 18 holes.  Very nice.

-Doug Denson had a three birdie afternoon and shot his second 33 in a row.  That's a 66 for the last 18 holes and that, too, is very nice.

-Trenton Kidwell birdied #2, made a bunch of pars, wondered when he was ever going to get another birdie, then finally chipped one in on eight for his second birdie in a round of 33.

-Mark Potts shot a 37, gave two strokes to the field and finds himself dead last in the handicapped tournament with a net score of 39.  I imagine it's been a long time since the field had no player plus five over their handicap for the day.

-Overall, 42 of the 59 players shot net par or better; 35 of them in the better category.  Wow!

-Kevin Byron matched his Dad, Junior, with a gross score of 40 but had a few more handicap strokes, 8 to be exact.  Each of them came in under par - Kevin at 26 net leads the tournament after the first nine holes, three strokes up on Tracy Rayhill, 4 up on Dennis Brosmer, Doug Denson, John Drake, Terry Padgett and Greg Potts.

-Btw, Tracy and Cory Rayhill each posted rounds of 35.  Nifty.

-John Drake shot a super 39 gross and claimed hole prizes at both #7 and #9.

-Mike Bird led the par parade with 8, 3 putted #7 and left two or three birdies on the table.  (Been talking with my putter ever since - @#$%^&*@#.  Not really, but do have to spend some time on the putting green getting some more Arnie Palmer in my putting swing.  Playing partners Mark Sherer and Trenton Kidwell had some kind words on my missing those putts, like an exasperated 'Michael!' or something about strings and skirts and a girl named Alice.  Michael, indeed.)

-Another note: Curt Johnson had a more than decent round of six over for holes 2 through 9.  He tripled the first hole and we were talking about what he could do to get started, even trying a kinda half stroke (controlled) off the tee at #1.  His playing partner, Bric Parker, stepped in the clubhouse at that point and said what he needed to do was get rid of several of his half assed swings to make substantial improvement in his game.  Curt and I wanted to agree but...

-Tom McAtee puts in the time at the golf course to improve his game.  He finds himself at the top of the individual standings for the second week in a row.

-And Doug Denson and Buck Holland are on top in the team standings.  That's through seven events and it seems like they have been there more often than not.  The two of them are definitely on their games.

Tuesday Men's League Results: Individual Handicapped Tournament Week 1 and Event 7

Tuesday Men's League results are posted here.  Congrats to first round leader of the Individual Handicapped Tournament Kevin Byron.  He shot a magnificent gross of 40 which translated into a net of 26 and a 3 stroke lead over Tracy Rayhill.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

-Week one of four of the Individual Handicapped Tournament.

-Par-Birdie combo leader to date: Phil Eyler with 32 pars and 7 birds for 39 total, followed closely by Doug Denson with 31 pars and 5 birds for a 36, and Trenton Kidwell with 26 pars and 10 birds for a 36.

-Individual leader, Tom McAtee, was half drenched with the rains last night.  He was out to sharpen his game so as to extend his stay at the top of the heap no doubt.  Odds that he will?  Pretty volatile up there at the top.

-Look for Junior Byron to be a factor in the Handicapped Tournament.  He's carrying a gaudy 6 handicap (earned) and has been firing 38's these last few days, even a 37 yesterday.  Which is more like his old self.  Son Kevin may also be a factor as well with a 14 handicap and the game to shoot in the low 40's.

-Mike Kidwell is another one to watch.  He's carrying a 7 handicap and should be playing around a zero handicap.  Others: Tony Wease, Bryant Trambaugh, Charlie Sheetz.

-Thought for the day: Get out there and have fun whacking that little orb about in the heat of the afternoon and evening.  Bring plenty of liquid refreshment of your choice.
