Tuesday Men - Come on Down
Should be lovely tomorrow and the fairways are dry and the greens receptive. Low scores? Eagles and birdies and pars galore? Bring your A game and see if you can combine your skill with a little luck and the ideal weather conditions to go low. I have oral surgery in the morning and may or may not be there tomorrow afternoon. Pam Byron will be in for at least part of the time starting at 2pm. Tip for the day: hit the ball squarely. Amazing what sort of good things happen with a flush smack of the bitty ball.
More dog days in June
Lupo came out with Carroll Rayhill and and did the important things like take a ride on golf cart, keep an eye or two on the golf ball (occasionally), and make sure that Carroll gets the flag back into the cup. Lupo is our retired drug dog who trained at Crane and worked with Kelly Rayhill for years before retiring with Carroll and Shorty.

Potts, Bird, Breeden and Byron Post Nine Under
Mark Potts, Mike Bird, Jay Breeden and the guy with the hot putter, Kevin Byron, shot nine under to win the Saturday's scramble at Lakeview. The team had two eagles, four birdies and two pars to get to their winning score with Kevin sinking putts of twenty plus feet on #1, a ten footer on #8 and then a honey of forty plus feet on #9 to lead the way. The team of Dave Wininger, Jordan Divine, Joe Allen and Karry Stoll posted seven under to claim second place. Five other teams competed for the first place prize with scores ranging from one under to six under.

Tuesday Men's League Team Tournament
The format for this year's second Team Tournament has been posted here.
Senior League Team Tournament Matches
The matches for the July 2nd Thursday's Senior League Team Tournament are posted here.
Michelle Wie Watch
She posted a score of three under yesterday at the Wegmans. Her round included four birdies and two bogeys. No double bogeys - that's improvement. Remember - when in trouble, get out of trouble. Goes for the Wie lass as well as us duffers at the local level. Note: Cheyenne Woods is also playing in the tournament - she shot +3 yesterday and has to do something good today to make the cut which is projected at +2. Short clip from the Golf Channel here.
Thursday Golfers
Richard and I played with Carroll Rayhill and Kenny Hudson our first round of golf yesterday morning. Here, Carroll hits down #5, our ninth hole of the opening round. Kenny watches.
Junior Byron and Wayne Pearl provided the competition in our catch-up round of the day. Junior, Richard and I pretty much played our handicaps in the heat of the day. However, Wayne, who spent his college days down in hot, humid, sweltering New Orleans at Tulane, excelled with a round of 41 (net 30) that was hugh in their 12-2 thumping of team Bird/Swayze.
Grandson Lucas was out on the course with Ian doing some golfing of his own.

Senior League Results
Results for Senior League events 10 and 11 are posted here. Next week we start the July Team Tournaments. Pairings will be based on the Team standings through today: #1 vs #14, #2 vs #13, #3 vs #12, etc. Should have a sheet up with names and hole assignments some time tomorrow.
Putting update
Played 18 holes over at Country Oaks yesterday morning - Mike Anderson's Senior Game, an every Wednesday affair where you play your own ball but in a team game. First time I have played off of Lakeview this year - long time coming. Had heard that the Oaks greens were pretty fast. My putter adjusted quickly though and I had only one putt get away from me leading to a three putt green. Overall, my putting was more than good; evne snaked in a few putts for birdies in the process. Repeated the good putting in an evening skins and flags match with Duane Wagler. So, the Utley grip and alignment stay along with the Pelz straight back, straight through stroke. Utley also did some writing on the importance of confidence - something we all realize is critical to good putting, and that has helped - chasing away negative thoughts, looking for the positive things happening on the green, seeing the effort and the improvement. Don't make every putt (yet) but do try and make a good putt every time and even there stumble on occasion. The book is available at the clubhouse if you want to borrow it.
Now it's on to Utley's other book - The Art of the Short Game.

Seniors - Come on Down!
Going to be a hot one for the Seniors today, most of whom are doing 18 holes with the make up of last week's round following today's event. Tip for the day: stay cool - find the shade when you can; stay hydrated. The fairways are providing some run and the greens are well watered providing opportunities for some lower scores on the day. Anybody got a hole-in-one sitting in their pockets? One of those would brighten up the day a bit more. Come on down, guys and gals, and give it a go. Let the fun and games at Lakeview start at nine (and continue throughout the day).

Tuesday Golfers
Tracy Rayhill examining his options approaching #5.
Dale and Richard Yoder, Community League members, came out late in the day for a practice round.
Tuesday Men Leaguers wait at #9 for the green to open. The teeing area was set back at the 170 yard mark giving players a blind shot into the green.
Mike Seals and Nick Toy teeing off at #8.

Senior League Make ups
Last Thursday's Senior League was rained out and players are making up their rounds before the conclusion of play this coming Thursday. Some concern has been expressed about playing eighteen holes this Thursday, doing the make up round immediately after the regular event, because of the heat. The hot weather is a concern and players should take it into consideration when making their decision as to when to play. (Diane, Wilma, Pam and Patty are going out there this morning to play; Jim, Jack, Tony and Charlie got their round in yesterday morning.) One other option would be to play the make-up round before the regular event on Thursday. That would mean an early rising and a start somewhere between 6:30 and 7am (want to give yourself plenty of time to finish before the 9 o'clock start of the scheduled event). In any case, be smart about the weather.
Tuesday Men - Come on Down
And yes it's gonna be a hot one. Reminder: Several players have not completed their rounds for last Tuesday's weather event and today is the last day in which it can be made up. Of note: Bric Parker continues to shine and leads the Individual standings as well as the Team standings with Curt Johnson. Mike Kidwell and Joe Allen are close enough to them to keep them hopping though. Short Jeffers slipped into the zero handicap club while James Hager slipped out (expect him to return after today's play), and Mike Kidwell is on the verge with a one handicap. Mark Potts, with all his 32's, gives the field a stroke, meaning he's below that zero handicap level and probably going deeper. Did you notice that Nick Toy and Mike Seals have become a presence in the team standings? It wasn't but a few weeks ago that Mike was asking me if they were out of it already. Nope. Lots of volitility with the number of teams playing. Still no hole-in-ones this league season. Anybody out there got the feeling that today is the day? With the fairways drying out, should see some run on the ball today. More eagles to be had? More birdies and pars? Did see an eight handicapper in the league come within a whisker of shooting a 35 Sunday evening: Mike Arvin had his ball just to the right of the ninth green needing a three to get that magical par round when he fluffed his chip and ended up with a bogey and a 36. Good shooting for Mike; maybe this afternoon. Come on down, guys, and see what you can do with that game of yours.

News Article for the Week
Summerfest Scramble
Jason Schutte, Scott Schutte and Mike Arvin with Summerfest royalty Waylee Wagoner and Kelci Mann. Jason, Scott, Mike and Doug Arvin shot a net 54 to win the Summerfest Scramble at Lakeview on Saturday. The team also picked up a skin and a hole prize for their morning's efforts. Mike Kidwell with the Harrel boys, Derek and Devon, along with Brett Chestnut claimed second place in low net (on a tiebreaker) at 56. Low gross score was posted by Short Jeffers, Kevin Byron, Junior Byron and Tony Wease with a score of 57. Claiming one of the two skins was the team of TJ McAtee, Derek Gilbertson, Dustin Schnarr and Jordan Schnarr. Dustin had chip ins at hole one and then again at number four, that one worth some money for the group. Hole prizes were won by Scott Schutte, Jordan Schnarr, Scott Wallace and Dave Wininger.
Community League
The team of Ray and Carol Shaw jumped back into the top spot in team competition with a very nifty net round of nine under in this week’s Community League event. Also shooting nine under this week were Bob Norris and Clyde Wake. Moving into second place was the team of Mike Graber and Cody Yoder with last week’s leaders, Tarry Bratton and Bill Harder, tumbling to third. Jamal Wittmer at 28 and Mike (Finny) Graber at 29 shot the low net rounds of the week. Mark Potts at 32 and Ken Wagler at 35 shot the low gross rounds. After four events, Adam Wagler sits on top of the Individual standings with Ray Shaw, Duane Wagler and Cody Yoder filling out the second through fourth positions.
Senior League
Last Thursday’s Senior event suffered the same fate as the US Open on Long Island, a rain out. The league players will make up the missed action sometime before the end of this Thursday’s golf day.
Tuesday Men’s League
The Men’s League event was declared a rain event during the morning hours when the weather was so ominous. As it turned out, most of the rain went elsewhere and a lot of the players did get their rounds in. Others have come in during the week to play their rounds. With most of the rounds complete, the Team leaders remain Curt Johnson and Bric Parker, with Bric also topping the Individual standings. For the event itself, Tim Voegerl had the low net round (so far) with a 29; Chris Bledsoe, Jeff Doyle and Bryant Trambaugh each posted 30’s. Team low net was carded by Trenton Kidwell and Chris Bledsoe with a 64. Mike Kidwell led the birdie parade with three, getting them at holes two, six and nine.
Tuesday Men's League Results
Last Tuesday's Men League results are posted. Note that several players still have the opportunity to complete their rounds before the close of play tomorrow. Results are here.

Summerfest Scramble on Saturday Morning
Starts at 8am and goes for 18 holes. As of right now there are 10+ teams signed up.
On putting and a skins and flags game
Better putting yesterday in a skins and flags game with Mike Kidwell and son Trey. I accept Utley's grip and alignment but go with Pelz's swing, the straight back and forth shooter rather than the arced Utley stroke. On the s&k game: tied at one apiece through six and then Trey and I decided we liked sitting on our thumbs and being content with our singles while Mike wrapped up in fine fashion taking five of the remaining six on the table. Hope Mike K felt treated...

Senior League Rain Out
This morning's Senior League event has been rained out and declared a rain event. Players have until next Thursday (can play after next Thursday's event) to get their round in with their opponents. You must play with your opponent so make the appropriate arrangements.
Wednesday Golfer
John Hovis, who teams up with Sandy Winter in the Community League, was one of many golfers out for a round yesterday. Both Community and Tuesday Men's League players came out and enjoyed the sun, wind and humidity.
Seniors - Come on Down!
Gonna be a hot one - wear loose clothing and stay hydrated. And bring a game to match the temperature - hot. We start at nine this morning.

Low Net Man
Allen Swayze was out yesterday to remind me of another area where I was less than perfect. In the Community League report for the week, I had listed, and made much of, the fact that Richard Swayze got himself low net scores in two different leagues this past week, both the Senior League and the Community League. Turns out, it was Allen with the super low net score in the Community League and not Richard. My apologies to the two of them. (If you know Allen, you know this was all done in jest and indeed we all got a few laughs out of it. Of course, I'm still mortified...)
The post that didn't show
I was surprised last night when several league golfers showed up and said they had been checking this blog for weather updates - to see whether or not Tuesday's event was a rain event. I was surprised because I had made an early and what proved erroneous decision and called it a rain event about 10 in the morning. That decision was duely posted (I thought) here and then I went to the golf course and recorded it on the telephone. Turns out I posted the notice over at the golflakeview blog rather than here at the news blog. My apologies for my mix up. Turned out the storms were over by ten in the morning and the rain the rest of the day didn't amount to a thimble of spit out at the golf course. Oh well...

Tuesday Men - Come on Down?
Weather might be an issue today - up to five inches of rain? We'll watch and update. Maybe it will all go south of us...
Sunday Evening
One of the golfers out for a Sunday evening round of golf. Wayne Pearl was also out on Monday. Getting ready for Thursday's match against the guys at the top of the Senior League's standings, I'ld expect.

Bob Harig's second take on the 2008 US Open
It's here and it's a good one. Brought back vividly several days of groans, moans, shouts and finally glee at Tiger Woods' triumph at Torrey Pines. From the USGA's news on this year's Open, Golf Magazine's David Feherty's summary of TW's win:
“Tiger Woods just won the U. S. Open with one leg tied behind his back.”
“Tiger Woods just won the U. S. Open with one leg tied behind his back.”
More on Stan Utley and The Art of Putting
Did take some notes while reading this book - still reading it.
Notes:
-concentrate on the process, not the outcome - make a good putt - do what you can - if it goes in, put a feather in your cap; if you make a good stroke, give yourself a quarter.
-checklist of things to do before you hit the putt - the routine - can be as simple as lining up the putt, taking your stance, a brief look at the target line and then hit the ball with that sure stroke. LSLH - Line, Stance, Look, Hit.
-see it, feel it, trust it
-be parallel to your target line with your alignment
-forearms should be on an even keel - not one above the other
One area where he disagrees with Dave Pelz is in the arc of the swing. Pelz says make it simple - straight back straight through. Utley sees that as unnatural, that we naturally swing in an arc. Putting stroke should be the same. I'm not sold on Utley's arc yet - still working on that.
My putting - a work in progress.

Rookie wins LPGA Major, Utley's Putting Book
The LPGA's second major of the year, the LPGA Championship, went to a rookie - for the second year in a row, but it wasn't Michelle Wie. Sweden's Anna Nordquist took home the prize by making good shots and sinking a number of long putts. The Wie Lass started off her final round with an eagle, had five additional birdies on the day but also a couple of double bogeys. Ouch. On Saturday, she had a hole in one and a single birdie that were offset by another double and a couple of single bogeys. Ouch. She ended up tied for 23rd, thirteen strokes behind the winner. Guess she still has some learning to do, some steadying. Never like to see double bogeys; remember the old adage: when in trouble, get out of trouble. That should reduce those doubles to singles if not pars, especially for long hitters.
Am working myself through Stan Utley's The Art of Putting. Putting is all about seeing the line and then firing the ball down that line, neither of which I've been doing at all consistently the last few years. So, am changing my grip and my stance; am looking for that vanishing line to start the ball rolling towards the hole; and expect the confidence to return - like yesterday. Looking to make my share of putts again.
Note: Remember the Summerfest Scramble coming up this Saturday. Sign up now!

Senior League
Tuesday Men’s League
Trey Kidwell and Charlie Lyon with net 27s, along with James Hager and Short Jeffers with 34s, had the low scores in last Tuesday’s Men’s League event. Coming in with the low team score at 61 were the teams of Noah Callahan and Jeremy Wildman along with Tyler Kidwell and Trey Kidwell. Hole prize winners included Dave Wininger, Trey Kidwell and Josh Huff with close to the pin shots. Kevin Byron (with two) and Bryant Trambaugh had the long putts. At day’s end, Bric Parker and Curt Johnson had the top spot in team competition, with Mike Kidwell and Joe Allen in second, seventeen points behind. Bric Parker had a sixty-plus point lead in the individual competition, with Tony Wease and Josh Butcher holding second and third places. Also of note: Tim Voegerl, playing alongside last week’s eagle shooter, Jack Divine, popped one in from forty-some yards on the same hole (#5) for an eagle of his own. Of the thirty-two birdies picked up on the day, Josh Butcher and Dave Wininger each grabbed three of them.
Community League
Richard Swayze got low net score in two leagues when he shot a net 28 in this week’s Community League event to go with his net 30 in the Senior League. Mark Potts had the low gross round with a 35. Coming in second in low scores were Bill Harder and Ken Frye with net 29s, and Jeremy Graber and Duane Wagler, each with actual 37s. Tarry Bratton and Bill Harder had the low net team score of the week at 63 and that propelled them into first place in team competition, two points ahead of Noah Callahan and Chris Taylor. Bill Harder jumped into first with his nifty round, with Duane Wagler, Adam Wagler and Allen Swayze close behind in individual competition.
