Bits and Pieces: Thursday Game, September Challenge
-Four teams participated in the Thursday game yesterday morning with Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson claiming the prize with a net score of 34.67 in the Alternate Shot format. They nipped Junior Byron and Ken Hudson by .33 strokes.
-Six more teams played their September Challenge yesterday. That makes 18 of the 22 (three played Wednesday night, nine on Tuesday) that have posted their alternate shot scores. Low gross and net so far are 34/29.67 shot by the team of Rob Graber and Clint Knepp. I've updated the results here. Next week the final part of the September Challenge, the best ball game. Remember two things: play with another team; there's a prize for low net in each event (Trabant and Wagler won the scramble prize).

Thursday Game Today at 10am
Thursday Leaguers will be getting together today at 10am to play a little golf. The game today is Alternate Shot with each of the two golfers hitting from every tee and then alternating till the ball is in the hole. Those golfers playing in the September Challenge can double dip by using this morning's score for each event (must make your decision before going out and hitting your first tee shot). All league golfers are welcome to join in the fun at ten.

Bits and Pieces: Tuesday and Thursday Games, September Challenge
-Several teams in the September Challenge got in their alternate shot games yesterday and I expect the majority of them would love a do over (including Tom and me). The scores were unusually high (the low net was 34.33 - last year's was 31.33) with the wind being the primary suspect in driving up scores. Did suffer some short putting woes myself and saw other individuals getting very exasperated with their short sticks.
-Three of the teams participated in the Tuesday game with Colin and Terry Padgett posting the low score, that 34.33 mentioned above.
-For the Thursday players, we will again start at 10am and, like last week, offer a Thursday game to go along with those playing their September Challenge game. Each is optional though we did have ten teams participate in the Thursday game last week.

Tuesday Event Alternate Shot, September Challenge Notes
Tuesday event for today will be Alternate Shot. Each player will hit from each tee box and then alternate shot from thereon in. Players have the option of playing their September Challenge Alternate Shot concurrently (at the same time) - just like last Tuesday, can count one score for both games.
Have posted the September Challenge scramble results in the last blog post as well as here (includes individual h'caps, etc.). The prize information sheet will be posted in the clubhouse.

Bits and Pieces: September Challenge; Football; Solheim Cup; Bric's Funeral Mass
-September Challenge: Week 2 is Alternate Shot. Each player tees off on each hole and then you alternate from there. Make all putts. Don't forget that the week 1 scramble has been extended through today with all the rain we had yesterday. I know of three teams that have not posted scores.
-Wet out at the golf course. Think we got about three inches of rain with a final deluge last night of an inch or so. Things greening up in a hurry after last week's needed moisture.
-Irish win, barely. Colts look good (the defense especially) in their loss. Needed: a quarterback who can deliver the ball to the wide open receivers.
-The Europeans got the best of the Americans in the Solheim Cup. Michelle Wie ran into three finishing birdies by Suzann Pettersen to lose at the 18th hole; and rookie Ryann O'Toole gave up a two stroke lead over the last two holes to finish all square with Caroline Hedwall. Both results were late in the day. Didn't help that Paula Creamer got creamed early and that Cristie Kerr had to withdraw because of injury.
-Off to Bric Parker's funeral mass (10am at St. John's). He would have enjoyed the viewing yesterday - jam packed with lines of people twisting around and about from the very get-go.

September Challenge: Scramble Extended Through Monday
I know of at least two teams that have not got their September Challenge scrambles on the books and may not do that with all the rain today. Am extending the SC scramble for another day to allow those that still want to participate in the Challenge to get their scores in. (Ron Hettle and I, with our extra nine holes trying to decide the Saturday Scramble yesterday, kept both George Templin and Kevin Byron from getting to their SC partners.)
Bric Parker Photo
Bric was out playing golf earlier this year. This photo was originally published March 18th when he was playing with Tracy Rayhill and probably Curt Johnson and Tony Trambaugh, a frequent foursome at Lakeview the last couple of years.
Don't forget the viewing later today at Brocksmith's - from 3 to 8.

Lakeview Scramble Declared A Tie After A Nine Hole Playoff Decides Nothing
Mike Bird, George Templin, Ron Hettle and Kevin Byron after agreeing to share the Saturday scramble title after they played a nine hole playoff. Each team finished at five under par. Photo by Pam Byron.
After nine playoff holes in the Saturday Scramble, the teams of Ron Hettle and Kevin Byron along with Mike Bird and George Templin, called it quits and agreed to share the trophy for this week’s scramble at Lakeview. The two teams tied at two under par through the first nine holes with George Templin running in a birdie putt of thirteen feet from just off the green at #8 to get his team to two under; Ron Hettle rolled in a ten foot putt at the ninth hole to get his team to the tie. Both teams had shaky starts with Hettle and Byron finding a double bogey at the first hole, and the Bird/Templin team gathering in a bogey there as well. During the nine hole playoff, the teams traded pars and birdies with each rolling in birdie putts at the last – Byron with a nine footer after Hettle’s tee shot, and Bird with a fifteen footer from just off the green. Hettle managed a super 70 yard bump and run shot from in the woods to the side of #5 fairway that led to par save while Templin rolled in a downhill sliding putt of twelve feet at the sixth hole for birdie to continue the game. The two teams finished their 18 holes with five under par 65’s. Three other teams participated in the scramble. Junior Byron and Lee Wininger, Greg Potts and Larry Hembree, and the threesome of Jordan Divine, Jack Divine and Jackson Hembree, each finished with one under 34’s and missed the playoffs by a single stroke.
Bits and Pieces
-North Daviess Cougars got creamed by the Linton Miners in football last night. Score something like 80 to 20. Grandson Lucas started in the defensive backfield and played some on offense (Z back) as well when the starter broke his arm.
-The Irish are in Pittsburgh today. Noon start time on abc. They are favored. Hope they win big, again.
-Solheim Cup: USA down 6.5 to 4.5 with one match to go in this morning's foursomes. Scores here. Morgan Pressel and Ryann O'Toole the only winners so far this morning.
-The September Challenge: Had three more teams play yesterday with another set to play today. Still time to get into the competition. The roster:

Bits and Pieces
-Lakeview's September Challenge: Nineteen teams signed up with 16 teams having their scramble scores in the books. Still time to sign up and get your score posted - through Sunday. Sunday will also start the second week and the second game - Alternate Shot. In Alternate Shot, both players hit from every tee box and then alternate from there on in till the ball is in the hole (remember - no gimmies). Will post the first week's scores Sunday evening.
-The Tuesday and Thursday Games: Will continue with the Tuesday and Thursday games next week (Alternate Shot), giving those in the September Challenge and those not participating to join in the fun. Last week, six Tuesday teams participated with Short Jeffers and Terry Butcher (Sept. Chal. players) posting the low score; ten teams took part in the Thursday games with Frank and Susan Fee (non Sept Chal. players) taking the honors.
-Solheim Cup underway with Christie Kerr and Michelle Wie winning their match against Maria Hjorth and Anna Nordqvist. The Golf Channel's Randall Mell makes it look like it was mostly the bad shots of the Europeans that gave the victory to the Americans. A win is a win is a win. The match is tied 2-2 going into the fourball matches this afternoon.
-Rain, rain. Welcome rain this week - though we would like it to take a break for the weekend, at least during the daylight hours. The Monday afternoon rain caught Tracy Rayhill, Curt Johnson, Tony Trambaugh and me out there on the course enjoying a skin and flag game. Got wet but we didn't care: it wasn't cold and the game was even - each of us came away with a skin or a flag. Did stop early enough for a foursome to get their September Challenge scramble in.
-Tomorrow morning's manager's scramble will start at 9am.

Bird, Hembree and Norman Win Lakeview Scramble in Overtime
Photo: Steve Norman, Larry Hembree and Mike Bird at the second hole after their overtime win in the Lakeview Saturday Scramble. Photo by Wayne Souerdike.
Steve Norman dropped in a three foot birdie putt at the second extra hole for the win in Lakeview's Saturday Scramble. After Mike Bird's drive and Larry Hembree's chip, Norman's putt was the cap to their eleven hole triumph over the team of Junior Byron, Wayne Souerdike and Lee Wininger (Joe Allen filled in for Lee for the last two holes). The two teams finished tied at three under par after nine holes while a third team, Stan Graber, Joe Allen and Curt Johnson, posted a minus one and failed to make the playoff.
Bits and Pieces: The Return
Okay, the league regular season is over and my word bank is already starting to fill up again. Best get back to using a few of them in this bits and pieces thingee that has been on hold now for several months.
Things that come to mind:
Football:
-Cougars won last night big up in Odon over Union, 54-8. Diane was there. Grandson Lucas did get in the game in the second half. Hooray.
-Notre Dame: Said it last week before the Michigan game: they gotta win. Guess we should all say it again but now with a little more emphasis. Irish gotta win! And it will be a quality win if it happens - the Michigan State Spartans have had their way with the Irish for way too long. But then that could be said about a lot of teams, couldn't it?
Golf:
-The golf goddess giveth and she taketh away. My Tuesday hole-in-one at #3 was followed by a six at the same hole on Thursday. Guess I was fortunate to walk away with a share of the A Flight championship - the triple bogey dropped me into a tie with Junior Byron. We both made routine pars at #4, the last of the tournament (and the season).
-Congrats to Jordan Divine on a great season what with a double championship. He and Mitch Jeffers combined for the team title while he went solo for the individual championship. Congrats also to James Hager who had a sterling four rounds in shooting a seven under par 133. Good stuff. Junior Byron also deserves a pat on the back: he nipped Jordan Divine by a single stroke for the B Flight title in the Tuesday League then shot a 34 on Thursday, making up two strokes, to tie me for the A Flight title on Thursday.
-On the larger stage of golf: My two favorite pro golfers, Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie, have pretty much been non factors this year. Tiger out nursing physical problems and Michelle way too erratic and inconsistent. The Wie Lass is still up there among the best in the world while Tiger's rank is still dropping with his poor play over the past two years. He does have a tournament coming up here in a bit. Hope he does well. Like the Irish, he needs a win.
Gotta go. Scramble at Lakeview in less than an hour. Don't forget the September Challenge coming up next week, the start of it.

Thursday League: Jack Lents Wins Individual Title, Flight Champions Crowned
Jack Lents fired a net 37 in the Thursday League's final day of play, earned 21 points and won the individual championship with a total of 701 points. For the season, he topped Dick Lemmon by a single point and Jack Butcher by nine points on a day when the three of them slugged it out in a foursome that included Frank Fee.
In the flighted tournament: Junior Byron had two birds, six pars and a single bogey in a rock steady round of 34 to finish with a 36 hole total of 147 and tie Mike Bird in the A Flight. Bird, leading by two strokes at the beginning of the day and by three with two holes to play, had three birds, four pars, a bogey and a disastrous triple bogey at the players' eighth hole, #3, to open the door for Byron. In B Flight, Frank Fee finished with a 41 for a total of 158 and a four stroke win over second place Jack Lents. Susan Fee in C Flight won by two strokes when she parred her final hole (#6) while hard charging Tony Wease took a double bogey at the same hole. Susan finished with a total of 167. D Flight's Denny Wagoner posted a final day 43 and finished at 175 for the tournament to best Rex Hudson by eight strokes. Morris Cornelius fired a final day 48 and finished at 188 to claim a ten stroke win over Dick Barber.
Low scores for the final day of regular season play were posted by Junior Byron with both a low net of 31 and a low gross of 34. Hole prizes were claimed by Pam Byron at #7, by Phil Roberts at #8 and by Mike Bird at #9. Average gross score for the day was 45.85, up more than a stroke from last week's 44.76.

Thursday League Results
This morning's final day league play results are posted here. Congrats to Jack Lents for his big win in the season long individual competition. He edged Dick Lemmon by the slimmest of margins, a scant one point. Also congrats to the flighted tournament winners: Mike Bird and Junior Byron, co-winners in the A Flight, Frank Fee in the B Flight, Susan Fee in the C Flight, Denny Wagoner in the D Flight and Morris Cornelius in the E Flight.
Thursday Leaguers - Last Chance For Glory!
Come on out and expect glory as we take on the final day of our season. Got to settle the race for the top of the individual competition: Dick Lemmon is holding on with his fingernails to the top position but has Jack Butcher and Jack Lents on either side of him trying to make room for themselves on a very narrow ledge. Dick has 685 points, Jack B. 684 and Jack L. 680. Within shouting distance of those three are Dave Brown and Dick Barber, each with 654 points, and Mike McLaughlin with 651 points. With 50 some points available today, think we can expect some fireworks.
Then there is the flighted tournament. The last nine holes of thirty-six with Mike Bird, Frank Fee, Susan Fee, Denny Wagoner and Morris Cornelius holding onto leads that could disappear in the wink of an eye or the swoosh of a swing gone bad. Of course, the contenders must take their chances to make up the difference if they hope to hold the gold at the end of the day.
We do have a pitch-in lunch at the conclusion of play. Diane has some brats and burgers that Eric is going to cook up. Know that we have some potato salad coming in from at least one source and maybe more. And no doubt a variety of other goodies - am sure that you will get your fill. Your task: Pack your clubs and your food offering and come on out; play nine holes of golf and then share a meal with the rest of us. Sound like a good way to spend part of your Thursday morning?
Btw, last chance for a second hole-in-one in league play at Lakeview this season. Had one on Tuesday night so might as well get one today. Any volunteers?
