Mike Kidwell and Joe Allen continue winning ways

In a Tuesday afternoon scramble, Mike Kidwell and Joe Allen continued their winning ways by parring the first playoff hole and beating Tenton Kidwell and George Templin in a two person scramble that saw both teams finish at one under. Mike Bird and Dave Strange found bogeys at #4 and #8 to offset birdies at the first two holes and fall a stroke shy of the playoff. Doug Denson and Noah Callahan finished at one over. Note: Next week's Tuesday afternoon scramble will start at 4:30. Be there or call ahead to ensure you get on a team.

Tuesday September Challenge Results

Dave Wininger and Karry Stoll shot a brilliant 28 to slip by Curt Johnson and Bric Parker for the low score for the three events and the 1st place position. Last week's leaders, Junior Byron and Kevin Byron, had a horrible final nine holes, coming in at only one under to tumble from the top spot to third.

Tuesday September Challenge

Part III of the September Challenge for the Tuesday players today. Best Ball - play your own ball - best net score between the two of you is the team score - by hole. Score cards in the clubhouse are ticked so net score is easily calculated. Have fun.

The Tin Cup Challenge 2009

Learned earlier today that this year's version of the Tin Cup Challenge is canceled. The WCC guys have mostly dispersed, or will have, by the 19th and 26th of October. Maybe next year. Suggest we create a cup at Lakeview and have our own game for those interested in playing. Will keep my ear to the ground and see if there is any interest.

The FedEx Thingee

Well, one in the field did get hot and reel off several birdies and have a pretty good round. Phil Mickelson had that round and he walked off with the Tour Championship. Tiger did beat Ken and the rest of the field, less Phil, and did walk away with the FedEx Cup and the zillions of dollars, but didn't you get the feeling that the two winners were very uncomfortable sharing the winner's circle? Nice win for the leftie; another consolation prize for TW - yeh, even with the zillions of dollars in his purse, it's still second place. Gotta have the win, baby, the win, or it doesn't mean a thing.

Sunday Afternoon Golfers

Some of the St. John's Youth Group who were out for a Sunday afternoon scramble earlier today.

TW vs KP

The FedEx thingee: Ken vs Tiger. I guess there are several others in the hunt and any one of them could get hot like Perry did yesterday and reel off a bunch of birdies right at the get go. But I'm going with a duel between Tiger and Ken. Maybe something similar to the Tiger-Rocco duel last summer. The two of them both look back on majors that slipped through their fingers this year - Kenny at the Masters, Tiger at the PGA. So, they each want it, badly. (As do several others playing this afternoon.) I am going with Tiger prevailing in the end - he might even have it all wrapped up with two or three holes to play. He's young, he's strong, he's good. And all he cares about is the game and, of course, being the guy in the winner's circle. Every thing else is fluff. We'll know in a little bit.

Denson, Ader and Bratton Win Scramble on Tiebreaker

In a low scoring affair at Lakeview, Doug Denson, Brian Ader and Tarry Bratton combined three birdies and a bogey to go two under for the day and tie the team of Mike Bird, Karry Stoll and Adam Cissel in the Saturday scramble. The Denson team got the draw on the cards and walked away with the trophy. Karry Stoll had dropped a twenty foot putt at #9 to bring the Bird team to the card table. Three other teams participated in the game with two firing one under scores and the third breaking even on a course that was drenched with the rains of the past several days.

Thursday September Challenge Results

Click on photo to enlarge. And yes we did play in the rain - it was supposed to disappear and it did not - just got worse. Oh my. The Gray/Byron team and the Souerdike/Swayze team did exceptional in the conditions that we had. Alternate shot is brutal to start with; the rain made it brutal times three or four. Next week: best ball. Might have to have Junior and Joe play with left handed clubs and one handed to make it competitive. But then maybe not - one does have to show up and play afterall.

Tuesday September Challenge - update

Had a medical emergency that affected two of our teams and all were given the option of playing their alternate shot today or tomorrow. The photo above shows the results of the teams that played today. Click on the image to enlarge it. Looks like a pretty good day for the Byrons, the Wininger/Stoll team, and the Waglers.

TBC East West Challenge and September Challenge, part 2

Two items on the golfing agenda out at Lakeview today:

1. Mike Anderson's Tuesday Boyz Club comes in at nine for the 18 hole conclusion of the East-West challenge. Today's games are Two Ball the first nine and then Alternate Shot the second nine. West leads the East 10.5 to 5.5 at the moment.

2. Our own September Challenge continues with the Tuesday bunch doing Alternate Shot today. Both players hit from the tee box and then alternate from there on in. Curt Johnson and Bric Parker are the current leaders in this three game, three week event.

Souerdike, Arvin and Callahan Triumph

Wayne Souerdike, Mike Arvin and Noah Callahan found birdies at two, four, five and six to come in with a four-under round to win the Saturday morning scramble at Lakeview. Six other teams vied for the win with three of them falling one stroke shy and the other two posting one-under rounds.

Lakeview September Golf Challenge

In the Tuesday version of the September Challenge, a three-event game that includes a scramble, an alternate shot and a best ball format, Curt Johnson and Bric Parker shot a nifty net 27.33 to take an early lead on eight other teams of two. Kevin Byron and Junior Byron follow in second, having posted a round almost as good as the leaders, a 27.67. In third is the team of Dave Wininger and Karry Stoll at 28, while Terry Butcher and Rob Sterling hold down fourth, having fired a round of 28.67. In the Thursday version of the same game, Joe Gray and Junior Byron found three birdies during their scramble and are up by three plus strokes on their closest competitors, Kenny Hudson and Ray Shaw, who posted a score of 29.33. Diane Bird and Mike Bird are tied for third place with Patty Bowling and Pam Byron, the two teams each firing rounds of five under par. The September Challenge continues over the next two weeks, with the alternate shot format coming up the week of September 21st, and the best ball the week of September 28th.

Linda Photos and Bits and Pieces

Photos: Linda Strosnider and her swing in #1 fairway the other day. She's been at this golf business for a couple of years now and is determined to fly the spillway with her second shot.

Bits and pieces:

-Watched as South Korea's Na Yeon Choi 'cruised' to a one shot victory on the LPGA yesterday afternoon. She actually had to come from behind at the Samsung World Championship after being up by seven strokes on Ai Miyazato at one time earlier in the day. The event was played at the site of last year's US Open event, Torrye Pines, where Tiger Woods has his dramatic duel with Rocco Mediate. Choi, like Tiger, birdied the last hole, but hers was a winning shot as Ai Miyazato had squandered her one stroke lead by dumping her second shot at the closing hole into the water and coming away with a then tying bogey. First win on the LPGA for the slender twenty-one year old Choi. Of note: She had to rely heavily on her putter as she left several shots short over the last several holes and had to convert testy four and five foot shots to stay competitive. Think she made five of six, including the one at 18.

-Joe Allen, Bric Parker and I would have loved a similar make of a putt. We each watched in horror as our thirty inch eagle putt fell off to the right at #4 during Saturday morning's scramble. We settled for the birdie - what else could we do - and then continued our round almost certain that that missed opportunity would be our undoing. Indeed it was as we finished one shot shy of the winning score.

-Chances of Tiger Woods not being the winner at next week's FedEx championship at East Lake in Atlanta? Well, lets see, he is playing the field so 29 other guys have a shot to win. He, like everybody else, has had a week off - we all know how grueling playing 18 holes of golf day in and day out can be. TW is also probably still miffed at the two he let slip through his fingers in the last month, including the PGA major where he had a two shot lead going into the last day. So I would have to say his chances of not winning are 50-50. One in two. Seem fair to the others? No, but then this isn't about fairness; it's about being good, making shots, and beating down the competition.

-Cloudy day today - rain a possibility. But should be a good day for golf at Lakeview. Soft greens; no run in the fairway. And we do have to get ready for tomorrow's conclusion of Mike Anderson's TBC East-West Challenge. The guys from the Oaks, the West, lead the guys from lakeview, 10.5 to 5.5. Two ball and alternate shot formats for the 18 holes tomorrow. Rally caps, guys - get them on now and lets turn the tables on our buddies from down the road. They deserve a comeuppeance, don't you think?

We did have quite a few golfers out trying their hand today inspite of the rain. A scramble in Jasper was cancelled and some of those players drifted north early on in the day. And Eagle View was closed and some of those who still wanted to play drifted south. And then there was the Lakeview crowd who also came out, including Perry Yoder and his two youngsters, Krista and Kylen.

Got word from the WCC crowd that Sept. 21 and 28 is not going to work for them. They suggested October 19th and 26th. Told them I would get back to them after talking with the guys signed up for the game.

Thursday September Challenge Leaders

Joe Gray and Junior Byron have the early lead in the Thursday September Challenge. The duo shot a nifty 32 gross and a 26 net in the scramble portion of the three event game. Kenny Hudson and Ray Shaw are 3.33 strokes back after posting a net score of 29.33, with five other teams firing rounds ranging from an even 30 to a 34.67. Next Thursday, the seven teams go at each other in an alternate shot format. The Challenge is completed two weeks out with the best ball portion of the game.
