-Els wins second straight down at Arnie's place. On a roll. Will he be a factor at Augusta?
-Wie given a two shot penalty for grounding her club in a hazard on the 11th hole Sunday, finishes tied for 6th at Kia. Michelle and penalties seem to collide all too often and usually with disastrous effects. Much discussion on her action, again detracting from a hugh win by another brilliant player from South Korea - Hee Kyung Seo (here's a photo from Seoul Sisters).
-Watched the ND women lose in OT to the Oklahoma women Sunday evening. Super freshman Skylar Diggins tied it in regulation with a three pointer but then one of the Sooners seniors, Nyeshia Stevenson, sunk a three from the corner to bury the Irish in OT. Oh, woe is me.
-MSU and Duke did advance to the final four with wins Sunday. Go Butler.
-Speaking of the Final Four: Diane is flying out of Indy to Seattle next Monday morning and couldn't understand why everything is booked solid and that even parking spots at the airport were needing reservations and early payment. I'll be delivering her to the airport at the earlier-than-the-early-bird time of 5am.
-On putting and the transfer of knowledge: Did practice some last night at the golf course, making a special effort on the green to draw that line from the cup to beyond the back of the ball so as to make sure my back stroke started out on a straight line. Made a difference though it's definitely not what my hands wanted to do. Note to self: keep at it until it becomes second nature (or something like second nature - learned behavior that needs a constant reminder).
Tip for the day: Go golf - it's gonna be beautiful.

Cut Putt
Scramble partner Mike Kidwell told me he had to look away when I putted during Saturday's scramble because I was consistently cutting across the ball, something he apparently did not want to see just before stepping up for his own putt. That was disturbing news as I have been working on correcting that putt cut for some time. Falling into bad habits. Like the Tex-Mex, going to have to put a note in my pocket on things not only to keep in mind but also to practice when playing golf. Note to self: When putting, draw an imaginary line that extends both to the hole - or spot adjacent to the hole on one of those curvy putts, and back behind the ball on which the club can track on the back swing. Been practicing at home and am amazed how good my putting is when putting neath a string - nice straight to and fro swing of the club, nice straight roll of the ball.
Bits and Pieces
-Saturday's Scramble: Trenton Kidwell and Gary Knepp complemented each other and stormed to a three stroke win in Saturday's scramble. They circled the course in three under and beat Cory and Tracy Rayhill, who came in at even par for their round, and Mike Kidwell and Mike Bird who finished at 36. The win gives Trenton wins in the first two events of the season, paralleling Ai Miyazato of the LPGA tour who also opened with successive triumphs.
-Boys Basketball: Congratulations to Trester Award winners Christian Duncheon of Barr Reeve and Ethan Hunsinger of Washington. Though Washington and Cody Zeller brought home the state title, the Vikings fell to a super Bowman Academy team.
-The Big Dance: Go Butler! They beat Kansas State yesterday in a humdinger of a game. My pick to win it all, Kentucky, fell by the wayside to a pretty good West Virginia team. Duke and Michigan State should win later today to join Butler and West Virginia in Indy next week.

Bits and Pieces
-Michelle Wie in the running at La Costa as the ladies enter the weekend at the KIA Classic (leaderboard here). She's tied for 3rd at 5 under, two strokes behind leader Hee Kyung Seo (profiled at Wie Under Par).
-Davis Love III still tied for the lead at Bay Hill. Ernie Els also shares first. Is Els making a move that people have been expecting for some time now? He's playing well - maybe he's the one who is going to challenge TW and not Phil Mickelson.
-The Big Dance: I dropped to 13044th place after last night's action. Still got Duke and Kentucky in the game as well as West Virginia and Kansas State. But I'm rooting for Butler, of course.
-The Ladies Big Dance: Notre Dame plays Oklahoma tomorrow evening while the Iowa State women get to go up against the UCON juggernaut. UCON advanced by 'nipping' Temple, 90-36.
-Watched a very good high school girls' basketball movie yesterday: The Heart of the Game. Starts out being a documentary about a very good coach, Bill Resler, but becomes the story of one of his star players - Darnellia Russell. If you're a basketball fan, get it and watch it.
-Did I say Go, Barr Reeve yet today? Up against a pretty good team from Bowman Academy this afternoon for the state title.
-Lakeview scramble at 10 this morning. Plan on sticking around for nine holes of skins and flags after the scramble.

Bits and Pieces
-Scramble tomorrow starting at 10am - all welcome. Had powerhouse teams last week.
-Forgot all about the Big Dance last night when Rex Hudson called about a possible player in the Thursday League. (Was in Bloomington all day, visiting, shopping, taking photos in the rain - several already up over at Birdman Photos). He wondered if we were watching Butler - uh, no. Did turn it on to catch the exciting conclusion. Go Butler! Did catch the rest of the games along with the OT shenanigans between Xavier and Kansas State. Kinda special. (Did jump up to 10441st place in the NY Times bracket game; Marty jumped to first in our little five person group where I sit right in the middle.)
-Davis Love III tied for the lead at Bay Hill! My oh my.
-League players: We do occasionally get calls with guys looking for partners so be sure and let us know if you need a partner - will put your name on a list. Got one player available for Thursday morning - any takers out there?
-Heading to the golf course early this am - Eric going down to Jasper to Dr. Norris for follow up on his scoped knee. Expect to get some good practice in and maybe a game - sunny today though not so warm - but warm enough!
-Go Barr Reeve!

The Yips
I forgot to mention in this morning's blog the double hit on a putt of mine yesterday. It happened on that sixth hole where my short putt would have won the game for Ken Hudson and me, a miss loses it. The double hit pretty much happened as described in this forum entry where a reflexive action produced the second hit on the ball. A light tap but definitely a tap. The ball did go in and probably would have gone in without the second hit. Nonetheless, had to take an extra stroke for that %*&$%@*& jerk of my right arm. Have never seen it happen or heard of it happening and never want to see or experience it again. Be still, arm, be still, I say.
Bits and Pieces
-From Golf Babes, news that golfer Kim Kouwabunpat is on the cover of Inland Living. That's not what struck me but rather the link to her website and her helpful pronunciation guide to her name in the banner: Welcome to Kim Can You One Putt.com. Cool.
-Golf with the boys yesterday - Jack Lents, Ken Hudson and Jack Butcher. My good old putter had several magic moments, and a few lapses. Included in the magic were a 25 foot downhill slider at #12 and a 15 footer at #13, for birdies. One of the lapses came at #6 when a missed three footer lost Ken and me the first six hole game - jeesh. Definite signs of improvement, especially with the putter and the irons. Game rounding into shape. Note to self - get those strokes in - a 100 to a 150 a day.
-Ernie Els to reporters: "I'd love everybody to stop asking questions about Tiger and his personal life. That's his life. Go ask him." Amen to that.
-Don't forget about league sign-up. Tuesday Men, Community, Thursday Match-Play. Brothers Gary and Terry LaMar are linking up for the Thursday League. Gary is a long standing league player and Terry has been a super sub for a couple of years now both in the Tuesday Men's and the Thursday Leagues. Ward Smith has also signed up - he and Clyde Wake are getting back together in the Thursday League after a several year separation. Clyde's been a regular in both Community League - with Bob Norris - the two represent the octogenarian set very well; and the Thursday League. Ward was a long time leaguer but stuck to subbing for the last two or three years. Will be good to see him teeing it up again on Thursday mornings. Frank and Susan Fee have also signed up for the Thursday League; that's a return for Susan who was a Women's League mainstay for several years.
-Reminder: The age restriction for the Thursday League has been removed. Don't know what to do with your Thursday mornings? Come out and enjoy the thrills of going head to head with your competition. Ten o'clock start times in April, nine o'clock thereafter.
-Golf tip for the day: Check out your putting mechanics. Jack Lents caught me several times yesterday coming across the ball with my putter. Have been working on a straight back, straight forward swing for a couple of years now. Old habits are hard to break but some do need breaking. Set up a string of ten feet or so between two points and watch your putting stroke as you hit balls underneath it. Can make a hugh difference if you can incorporate that practice technique into your on course game.

Bits and Pieces for a Tuesday
-Stephanie Wie at Wie Under Par on Tiger's Buddhist bracelet:
-The other Wie, Michelle, is pictured at Golf Babes with news of her new gig with McDonalds.
-The Dance - Ladies: Half of the sweet sixteen field has been filled; the other half tonight. The bracket here.
-Tip for the day: Go Golf! Sunny and temps in the 60's. Something a little more specific: Get the swings in (a hundred to a hundred and fifty) but pay particular attention to the short game, especially chipping - hit the ball cleanly and get it to the hole.
During Kelly Tilghman’s interview with Tiger, she heedfully noticed he was wearing a bracelet and asked him its meaning. Tiger explained, “It’s Buddhist, it’s for protection and strength and I certainly need that.” He went on to clarify that he started wearing it before he entered treatment ($10 says it was a gift from his mother and/or Elin had a tracking device installed in it) and vows never ever to take it off.and
With this magical bracelet, Tiger now has the willpower to refrain from boinking women not named Mrs. Woods.
I actually also have a Buddhist bracelet for protection that my mother gave me. She went through great lengths to get it from some friend of a friend who brought her to a secret place in the faraway land of Taiwan. Can’t you just buy these things from a normal Buddhist store? Not one that’s been blessed by a Tibetan monk!
Since I started wearing mine three years ago, I haven’t wanted to bang any porn stars (although Ron Jeremy is kind of cute…). So you see, it’s legit. I just hope Tiger had the good fortune to have his blessed by a higher being, too. She's a hoot...

Bits and Pieces for a Monday Morning
-TW is visiting with reporters! Spending five minutes with two different reporters yesterday. Must say he looks a whole lot more like the man he used to be rather than that shell that gave the prepared speech just a while back.
-The Big Dance: Interesting stuff. My rank in the NY Times bracket: 17837th. Hmm. Did enjoy that buzzer beater that allowed Michigan State to advance. And Cornell?! Go, little guys! Those teams that weren't supposed to make it out of the first week - St. Mary's, Cornell, Northern Iowa, Washington.
-The Big Dance - Ladies: Four lower seeds advanced after the first round. The Notre Dame women routed Cleveland State and play Vermont, one of the upset winners, next. If the Irish keep on winning, they might get to play UCON for the umpteenth time this year for the championship. If that happens, those girls from Connecticut will be going for their 78th consecutive win. Wonder if anybody is betting against them? Doubt it.
-Furyk wins! At the Transitions. He did make it interesting by stumbling a bit coming down the stretch. And did you see that shot out of the trees on the 18th hole? I know we aren't supposed to say the 's' word (shank - Furyk called it a 'half shank'), but that sure is what it looked like. He recovered nicely, took his bogey and won by one over K.J. Choi.
-Golf in our backyard out at Lakeview was slow, slow and slow. The rains that looked like they were going to be with us all day finally arrived at about 3:45 in the afternoon. And today - rain likely with temperatures around 50 degrees. Hmmm.
-Eric is back on his feet after the scoping of his knee to remove some stray cartilage and doing stuff at the golf course. Hurray.
-Thought for the day: Go Barr Reeve, beat Bowman Academy. Bring that state championship down to our neck of the woods.

Bits and Pieces for a Sunday Morning
-The Big Dance: Butler advances and plays in it's back yard next week. Hurray! My standing in the NY Times bracket game has improved with yesterday's play: after day one, I was in 21292nd place; day two saw me drop further down the pipe to somewhere in the 27000's; but then after yesterday, I improved to 18757th place. Go figure. Still mired in fourth place in Marty's small group. I mostly root for the underdog from this point out - the St. Mary's, the Northern Iowa's.
-Barr Reeve and Washington advance to the State finals with wins yesterday. Local teams doing good. Will there be anybody left in Montgomery to mind the store next Saturday? Washington?
-Jimmy Furyk looking good on the Big Boys' Tour - takes a three stroke lead into the final day at the Transitions. Went back and forth between the golf and the basketball while in the clubhouse yesterday. Quite a change in tempo in that switching, from the slow and easy gait of the golf game to the hurley-burley, out-of-breath, go-fast pace of the boys in shorts.
-No hole-in-ones out at Lakeview yesterday though at least one eagle (Trenton Kidwell's during the scramble). Today? Probably a better chance of a sprinkle or two than an ace.

Kidwell, Kidwell and Byron Win Season's First Scramble
Photo: Tyler Kidwell trying to snake in a ten foot putt at hole #9. Weston Muessig and Wayne Souerdike look on as Steve Canada uses a little body English in a futile attempt to sway the direction of the ball. The team settled for a tap in par.
Trenton Kidwell, Mike Kidwell and Kevin Byron combined for a brilliant seven under par for a two stroke win in the season's first Saturday Morning Scramble out at Lakeview Golf Course. The trio found birdies at holes two, three, six, seven and eight, and an eagle at four (courtesy of Trenton) and missed under par only at holes one and five. Three other teams went for the trophy with the team of Weston Muessig, Tyler Kidwell, Wayne Souerdike and Steve Canada joining the team of Mark Potts, Greg Potts and Chris Taylor at five under. Dave Wininger, Walter Henrichsen and Joe Allen circled the course at four under.

Bits and Pieces for a Friday Morning
-The Big Dance: Best opening day ever? It sure was a day of upsets and Notre Dame started the whole shebang off by getting booted by Old Dominion. Jeesh. I'm in the 21292nd place at the NY Times and 4th out of five in son Marty's group - the leader of that group, Tammy Heath, stand 14th overall in the larger group - that's impressive. Wonder how many are in the larger group? Anybody know?
-Tracy Rayhill brought dog Manilla out to join him, Jeff Brookshire and Bric Parker for a round of golf yesterday afternoon. Hope the geese took note and decide to stay away. More dog visits wanted, especially at this time of year when the geese are laying eggs in the neighborhood. Might have to break down and get a dog.
-Picked Tiger Woods to finish in the top ten at the Masters in a poll over at about.com. He might win it all - I keep seeing the 2008 US Open where he willed his win.
-Looks like a more than lovely day tomorrow. Let's scramble at ten.
-Tip for the day: Get out and golf - get those swings in. Gives you a chance to check out your timing belt and find that ever elusive rhythm. And, besides, it's fun, especially if you can pick up a quarter or two from your friends.

Bits and Pieces for a Wednesday Morning
-Tiger back at the Masters. Surprising to me. No rust? I don't remember his road to the US Open in 2008 - was that his first competition since surgery? If so, I would say that he has a chance to win at the Masters (of course). But then his return after his father's death at the British Open - disaster - he didn't even make the cut. In any case, very glad that he has made the decision and is coming back. And why not start with a first place finish?!
-Filled out my bracket (NY Times) for the Big Dance and have Kentucky winning it all. The number ones all make it to the final four. Expect Kansas to be playing KY for the championship. And, no, I did not pick the favorites in each of the matches: 2 upsets in round 2 and 3 in round 3. Admission: This is an off the wall prediction done with little knowledge and even littler research. If that sounds like maybe I guessed a lot, well, yes, I did. Fun to be part of it and my odds of being right are better than the lottery, right? That's not saying much.
-Curt Johnson, Tracy Rayhill and Bric Parker gave it a go late yesterday afternoon. Bric took them to the cleaners even though of the three of them he has been out the least. Fresh, I guess. Mike and Trenton Kidwell also got nine in late. The Fees and the Henrichsen's made it out and Joe Gray made an appearance for the first time this year.
-Another beautiful day in front of us. Eric is going down to Dr. Norris to have his knee scoped so he won't be in today. Diane is up cat sitting in Bloomington. I'll tend the store and get my game back in shape.

Bits and Pieces for a Monday Morning
-The weather: partly sunny with temps near 50. Almost nice but, remember, we just got over that long spell of 20's and 30's and white stuff covering the ground.
-Ernie Els wins again on the Big Boy Tour! Seems like forever since he lofted a trophy above his head. Remember the last time? Well, it hasn't been all that long ago - two years - at the Honda Classic. Good for the Big Easy who has also slipped out of his thirties and is now a forty year old.
-Dave Wininger and I also raised a winning hand as we one the opening scramble in a six-six-six game with Short Jeffers and Doug Denson on the one hand, and Trenton Kidwell and Weston Muessig on the other yesterday afternoon. Short dropped in a nifty twelve foot putt to tie the alternate shot, and then Dave rolled in a seven footer to tie the best ball segment. Dave had the hot putter which included a sweet fifteen foot downhill putt on six to win the scramble in dramatic fashion. Pretty fair golfing by the bunch of us on a not so fair day at Lakeview.
-Barr Reeve won the boys' basketball regional down at Jack's place last Saturday. Had a pretty easy time of it as Tecumseh offered little opposition in the morning. Lanesville, who beat NE Dubois earlier, offered a better test for the Vikings but finally succumbed after making too many mistakes. Lots of photos from around the arena over at Mike's Notes and Pics.
-Get out and smack the ball around - league play is just around the corner.

Bits and Pieces for a Saturday Morning
Photo: Eagle over Lakeview coming from the southeast.
-Notre Dame basketball team loses to WVU in a close one last night - 53-51. Having some success with their slowed down offense - lets see if it will get them past the first game in the big dance.
-Golf with Jack Butcher, Jack Lents and Ken Hudson yesterday. Eighteen holes - we would have remained dry if we had played just fifteen holes. Jack Lents the big winner when he went on a rampage from holes 13 through 16 with three skins and two flags on three pars and a birdie - all this with a bum left wing that gave him a whatfor every time he swung a club. Games are whipping into shape nicely with more and more good shots and fewer of those 'where-did-that-come-from' variety.
-Note to Tiger: Make the decision, TW, and let the world know when you're coming back. We're ready for you. More than ready.
-Boys Regional basketball action today at Loogootee: Barr Reeve plays Tecumseh in the first game and NE Dubois plays Lanesville in the second. If records are any indication, it should be Barr Reeve and Lanesville in the final tonight. Expect the Vikings to move on to semi-state. First game starts at 10:30. Go, Barr Reeve.

Bits and Pieces for a Friday Morning
-Notre Dame men's basketball team making noise in the Big East tournament. Beat #2 seed Pitt last night for their 6th win in a row. Pretty neat seeing all those top seeds fall yesterday - with the exception of West Virginia who won with a basket as time expired.
-Question: Will we ever see two better sectional finals than the ones we saw this year? First the girls with Vincennes Rivet beating Barr Reeve in triple overtime. And then the boys with Barr Reeve downing North Daviess with a buzzer beater. Very cool stuff.
-Tiger coming back - great! My preference is the Palmer event - it's sooner. But the Masters is okay, too.
-What's with TW hiring Ari Fleischer? I agree with Gene Wojciechowski that that's a big mistake.

Young Guns
Scott McAtee from Odon joins Stephen Bradley, Clinton Burch and Ben Hogan, the top three guns on the Loogootee High School golf team, for nine holes after school yesterday. Clinton and Ben tied for low round on this occasion, each firing 42's on the day. Expect the three will be shooting sub 40 rounds consistently at Lakeview and at Eagle View as the season progresses.

Bits and Pieces for a Wednesday Morning
-Golfing continues! It's lovely to wander around the golf course without winter gear. Who cares if there is an occasional sprinkle...
-Tracy and Cory Rayhill continue their competition while Cory is on spring vacation. Monday night, Tracy rolled in a clutch six foot putt on the last hole to stop the late charging Cory. That evened their match at one game apiece. Last night, Cory returned the favor by blasting out of the sandtrap at #9 to six inches for a par and a one shot victory that gives him a one game advantage at this point. Expect more tight matches as the week progresses.
-Curt and Kevin Johnson were also out last night for nine holes. Kevin still pounding the ball and getting back in shape for the season's beginning. He reports the Dye course and the Ross course not open yet but soon.
-New golf blog for you: Wie Under Par. Not Michelle Wie but rather Stephanie. She talks of Tiger's likely return sooner rather than later (I like Arnold Palmer's tournament).
-PGA and Ping take care of the wedge issue: the old Ping wedge is banned. Not surprising.
-Golfing tip for the day: Get out and play! DJ Harder was out on Monday evening and having problems with his short game, chipping especially (me, too, though I would expand that to my entire iron play). Think at this stage the most important thing to do is get out and get your swings in - lots of rust to knock off, lots of rhythm to recapture. Three hundred strokes a day? Well, that might be a little excessive at our level. How about a hundred a day? And don't count your putting strokes in that - do those in addition to the wood and iron swings.
-About time to golf, isn't it?

Golfing on a Foggy Morning
Jack Butcher and Ken Hudson were already stretched out and ready to go when Jack Lents and I joined them for 18 holes this morning at 10. The early fog was supposed to burn off by 11 but stayed with us till about 1:15. Hats pulled over our ears and lots of hand rubbing were the order of the day.
Bits and Pieces for a Monday Morning
-Preseason league scramble week: 32 days and counting.
-In case you happened to be incognito in some distant land: Barr Reeve won the boys basketball sectional Saturday night on a last second (actually, there was time left on the clock and supposedly a timeout called by North Daviess but to no avail - the black and white student body was on the floor going bananas, the referees racing off the floor, the ND coach, wanting time put back on the clock, in hot pursuit). Final score, 30-28, in a sterling example of hoosier hysteria.
-Also last Saturday, the Vincennes Rivet girls stumbled again at the State finals, losing to the Fort Wayne Canterbury girls for the second year in a row. (Dang...) Look for a repeat match up next year as both squads return bunches of talented young ladies.
-The big boys did play golf over the weekend and the golfing spiderman, Camilo Villegas, pretty much had his way with the competition, winning by five at the Honda. Got to see a bit of Saturday and Sunday coverage as I tended the clubhouse. Wonder how much of the viewing public has disappeared this year? Might be too early in the season to make a judgment but the drama certainly is lacking, at least for me.
-Which reminds me: are they playing baseball yet? Must be down in Florida and Arizona, getting ready for opening day coming up in a few weeks. It's been years, 80's maybe, since baseball has been on my radar. My ears do perk up when the Cubs make noise.
-Lots of golfers at Lakeview this weekend. Among the late Sunday afternoon players were Collin Padgett, Terry's son, out with a friend; and Cory and Tracy Rayhill. Cory again taught Dad a lesson, taking his measure by three strokes over nine holes. Earlier in the day, Adam Wagler almost had his Dad Ken over the barrel but doubled the ninth hole to slip into a tie at 38 - that's pretty good shooting for a first time out. Jeremy Graber and Tyson Stoll played with them but didn't mention their scores. Don Carrico came out with Jennifer and Aaron, and Ed and Dustin Schnarr apparently dusted off the efforts of Nick Strange and Bryson Parker in a little friendly competition. Lots of others, including Tarry Bratton with son Frank and friend Jim Hart. No hole-in-ones reported (dang).
-Today: Little bit of fog at the moment and temperatures around 40; but lots of sun and temperatures soaring into the high 50's, maybe even a 60, promised for later in the day. Golf at ten with the boys.
-Sunset at 5:48 tonight.

Early March Golfers
Mindy and Walter Henrichsen were among the few early March golfers the other day. Weatherman promising beautiful weather for the weekend with temperatures in the 50's. Remember the last time we were that warm here in southern Indiana? There was a weekend in January...

Lakeview Golf Course Leagues Forming
Lakeview Golf Course announces the forming of its 2010 leagues. Area golfers can play in one or more of three leagues: the Tuesday Men's League; the Thursday Match Play League; and/or the Community League. Other than the Community League's Summer option, which beings the week of May 30th, the new season starts play the week of April 11th. Teams and individuals can sign up by telephone (295-5678) or by email (golflakeview@gmail.com). More information can be found at the Lakeview Golf Course web site (www.golflakeview.com) or by contacting golf course management. Note: The Community League, which offers more flexibility in playing as golfers complete their weekly round at a time that is convenient for them, also has an extended season option this year, one that joins the other two leagues with a start in mid April and a completion in mid September.
Note to blog readers:
Changes in league structure this year:
-Expansion of Community League season to parallel the other two leagues: mid April start to September conclusion
-Increased emphasis and length of tournaments
-Addition of the Grand Poobah Award
-Addition of mid season mixed league scramble
-Addition of post season September Challenge in each league
