Bits and Pieces
-Michelle Wie fired a two under and finishes at -3 in a tie for 12th at the LPGA Hana Bank Championship in Incheon. Na Yeon Choi won with a three day total of 206, ten under par. The world's #1 player, Cristie Kerr, was right there with the Wie Lass in a tie for 12th.
-Recap of the 24 hours from Friday night to Saturday night:
*North Daviess loses at Perry Central when they miss a point after with three and a half minutes to play.
*Joe Allen and I lose the Saturday Morning Scramble when Larry Hembree and Stan Graber go bananas on approach shots and putts.
*Notre Dame makes Tulsa a winner (another one of those 'biggest-wins-ever!) in South Bend by throwing an interception in the end zone with 42 seconds to play and only needing a field goal from a guy who has hit something like a gazillion in a row to win.
*The Barr Reeve V-ballers lose their semi-state match against Indy Luthern after racing to a 2-0 lead up in Odon last night.
Jeesh.
Wait a minute. The Rangers did win down in Texas last night. And, of course, there was the Michelle Wie sort of positive note. And, we do have Sunday and the K of C scramble to look forward to. That takes place at 10am - just a little bit from now. So, on with it.

Stan Graber and Larry Hembree Win Saturday Scramble
Stan Graber and Larry Hembree used four excellent approach shots and three excellent putts to card a three under round of 32 and win the Saturday Morning Scramble. The twosome, playing in cool conditions, started with a birdie at #1 when Stan Graber dropped his approach shot to three feet and an easy putt for a birdie. On four, Larry Hembree's fairway wood stopped just in front of the green, giving the team an easy up and down. On #5, after an errant tee shot and a chip that didn't make the green and a second chip that stopped ten feet short of the hole, Larry Hembree rolled in the par saving putt. On #6, Hembree again had his fairway wood working, getting his ball on the collar of the green for an easy two putt for birdie. At #7, Larry Hembree again rolled in a ten foot par saving putt. Graber and Hembree each had approach shots at #8 to about seven feet with Stan Graber this time rolling in the birdie putt. The two bogeyed #9, giving them a final score of 32, but by then it was too late for the competition. Doug Denson and Lee Wininger fired an even par 35 while Mike Bird and Joe Allen shot a 36.
Perry Central Wins (correction)
I was looking at old news when I reported earlier that North Daviess beat Perry Central last night. The truth is:
Perry won. We missed a PAT to lose 14-13 with about 3 minutes left. From Eric. Dang.
Bits and Pieces
-Over in South Korea: Michelle Wie stumbles a bit, opens her second round with two bogeys, finishes with a +1 for the day and -1 for the tournament and sits seven strokes behind the leader, Song-Hee Kim. Not a very good place to be with just 18 more holes to play.
-Easy looking on a Saturday morning: Sandra Post. From about.com's Top Fifty Female Golfers:
-Today's scramble starts in about an hour. Bring a jacket, at least for the first few holes.
-Reminder: K of C Scramble tomorrow. Starts at ten and goes for 18 holes.
-Looks like the North Daviess Cougars beat Perry Central last night, 7-6.
-And, lets not forget the Viking v-ballers. They play the second game up in Odon today, and then, hopefully, the championship this evening. Patty Bowling said a couple of the girls, including granddaughter Tya Harmon, had a touch of the flu this week. Get better quick, girls. And win, of course.
-Best get myself going and get over to the golf course. How many scramblers we going to have on a cool Saturday morning? Ten? Twelve? Stay tuned.
-Easy looking on a Saturday morning: Sandra Post. From about.com's Top Fifty Female Golfers:
The best-ever Canadian female golfer, Post won a major championship in 1968, then didn't win again for 10 years. Then she was among the top players on the LPGA Tour for several years in the late '70s and early '80s. Post held the record for youngest women's major championship winner until 2007.

Knights of Columbus Scramble This Sunday
Heard from Terry Butcher this morning. A K of C Scramble will start at 9am this Sunday morning. Eighteen holes. Sign up at the K of C or at the golf course.
Bits and Pieces
-At the Hana Bank Championship in Incheon, Michelle Wie birdied the last two holes to get to -2 and into a tie for fifth place. Vicki Hurst and Song-Hi Kim lead at -4. Forty-four players are within six of the top spot so at this point the tournament remains wide open. Weather there is about like here: Saturday's expected high a 62 with sunny skies. Sounds like pretty good golf weather to me.
-Of note: Junior Byron and Denny Wagoner's scramble triumph yesterday morning broke the winning streaks of both Vic Wallace (three Thursday wins in a row) and Mike Bird (three scrambles in a row). Dang.
-Watched the Rangers get thumped by the Giants for the second night in a row. Too bad their pitchers took a 30 minute break there in the 8th inning - four walks and then a bunch of hits leading to seven runs - all after two were out. Giant fans went bananas; Texas players looked absolutely lost. Expect they will do better back home in Texas, right?
-Saturday Morning Scramble start time: 10am.
-Pretty tragic and stupid stuff up in South Bend with the death of ND student Declan Sullivan when the scissors lift collapsed in high winds on Wednesday. Common sense by any number of adults up there should have prevailed, and didn't.
-The big boy golfers have followed the ladies to the Far East and are playing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at the inaugural Asia Pacific Classic. Ben Crane is tied with Pariya Junhasavasdiku at five under for the lead. (Pariya's name is a mouthful but just take your time and work yourself through it - you can do it. Wonder if it's like using our full names but with only that one space: Michael Dominicsebastianbird. Now that's a mouthful as well.)
-North Daviess footballers playing down at Perry Central tonight. Should be a good one, Eric reports.
-Barr Reeve v-ballers are back up in Odon tomorrow playing Trinity Luthern for the Semin-state title. They beat North Central last Tuesday night at Barr Reeve for the Regional Championship.
-Heading out to the golf course for a walk. Golf maybe this afternoon when it's a bit warmer.

Junior Byron and Denny Wagoner Capture Cold and Windy Thursday Scramble
Seven hardy souls braved the much colder and still windy conditions this Thursday morning out at Lakeview, all for the sake of getting in a bit of golfing. With the game on in spite of the adverse conditions, Junior Byron and Denny Wagoner used a short birdie putt from just off the collar at their first hole, #2, and eight pars to card a winning score of 34. Lee Wininger, Vic Wallace and Pam Byron shot an even 35 on their round to finish second, while Mike Bird and Dick Lemmon carded a 37 to finish third.

Bits and Pieces
-Thursday Morning Scramble will start at 10am tomorrow. Looks like you're going to need a jacket with a high of only 58 for the day.
-Tiger's long stay at the top of the world rankings to end this week. Lee Westwood for sure passes him, and Martin Kaymer has the opportunity to end up on top with a win or a 2nd place finish at the Andalucia Masters in Valderama this week. So, how long will it take for TW to regain the #1 position? Will he ever get back on top? Can't imagine him not making it back to the top with his complete dominance of men's golf for the last decade. My guess - he's back on top within six months.
-The Ladies are in South Korea this weekend for another 54 hole tournament (why 54 holes?). They play at Incheon, the location of the Battle of Inchon way back in 1950 (I don't remember it well though a little over ten years later I did participate in a training mission as a LTJG on board the USS Washtenaw County (LST1166). The area was still recovering from the Korean War and, as you can imagine, has changed rather dramatically since then.) Michelle Wie will be playing and, hopefully, do a lot better than how she did down in Malaysia last week. Cristie Kerr , the new #1 ladies golfer in the world, will also be playing. Of note: From Golf Girls - the temperature difference over the two weeks is a little dramatic: they go from the 90+ temperatures in Malaysia to the 40+ temps along the coast in South Korea. Brrr... Of note 2: The Wie Lass will be going out with Cristie Kerr and Jiyai Shin. Pretty good threesome there.
-Time for breakfast here at the Bird House.

Templin, Rayhill and Bird Fire Five Under, Win Tuesday Scramble on Tiebreaker
George Templin, Tracy Rayhill and Mike Bird fired a five under 30 to tie and then win on a card draw the Tuesday Afternoon Scramble. Doug Denson and Greg Potts also carded a 30 to have a shot at the win. Four other teams participated with Dave Wininger and Steve Qualkenbush coming in with a 31, Short Jeffers and Curt Johnson a 32, Travis Brett and Noah Callahan a 33, and Nick Wininger and Mark Jones a 34. The winning team had birdies at holes one, two, four, six and seven, and pars at the remaining four. Of note: The Denson/Potts team eagled hole #4; the Wininger/Qualkenbush team were at five under on their round but bogeyed their final hole to slip out of the tie for first.
Tuesday Afternoon Scramble
Start time: 5pm. Expecting the rains (rains?) to have cleared out by then.

News Article for the Week of October25
For the week of October 25, 2010
Lakeview Golf Course News
by Michael Bird, Lakeview Golf Course Manager
Lee Wininger, Junior Byron and Mike Bird closed with four birds to finish at six under par in the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview. That score gave them a tie with Mark Potts, Greg Potts and Larry Hembree, with the tiebreaker, for the second week in a row, going in favor of the Mike Bird team and against the Mark Potts team. Highlights for the winning team included Lee Wininger's 25 foot putt for birdie at #8, his chip in for birdie at #3, and Junior Byron's long drive and chip to four feet to set up the team's finishing birdie at hole #5. Two other teams played in the scramble with each of them carding five under thirties. They were: Doug Denson, Wayne Souerdike, Jack Lents and Kevin Byron for one; and Dave Wininger, Travis Brett, Joe Allen and Curt Johnson.
Vic Wallace and Mike Bird shot a 34 gross and a 28.67 net to win the Thursday Morning Scramble this week. The twosome got off to a rough start by bogeying their very first hole, #4, but then birdied the following two holes to get to one under. Six pars followed including a decisive ten footer from just off the green at #3 to finish. Junior and Pam Byron claimed second place with a net 29.33 on a 34 gross, while Jack Lents and Ray Shaw took third with a net 30 on a gross 36. Tony Wease and Dick Lemmon closed out the scoring with a net 31.33 on a gross 37. Of note: Vic Wallace is making a habit of winning on Thursdays. This marks the third Thursday in a row that he has been on the winning team, and the fourth event (he helped Wayne Souerdike and an ailing Jack Nickless secure third place in the September Challenge) where he has been in the winners' circle at the end of the day.
The Tuesday Afternoon Scramble was won by Short Jeffers, Greg Potts, Karry Stoll and Mark Jones. The team shot a seven under par to tie the team of Dave Wininger, Travis Brett and Steve Qualkenbush and then won the scramble on a tiebreaking card draw. Two other teams came in at five under par: Nick Wininger, Noah Callahan and Ryan Johnson; and Mike Bird, Stan Graber and Joe Allen. Of note: The winning team had a couple of 'Oh Yea' moments with Short Jeffers chipping in for eagle at #4 and Mark Jones' twenty-five foot putt at #7 for bird.

Bits and Pieces
-Lion V-ball girls lose in close match with the Barr-Reeve Vikings. Heartbreaker as Hannah LaMar and friends stormed back to tie the match after losing the first two games but then lost the fifth game. Plenty to cheer about on both sides.
-And if you are a Navy fan, you also have plenty to cheer about as they manhandled the 'Fighting' Irish of Notre Dame yesterday, 35-17. The Irish coach, Kelly: "You get what you deserve." Got to admit I was shocked when I heard the score - Diane and I were heading home after watching the Lions beat the VR Patriots (to advance to the championship) yesterday afternoon - turned on the radio and heard the score, 35-10 in the fourth quarter. Thought that was about right - only one problem - the other team had the 35 points. Oh well, as Diane reminded me, I'm an old Navy man so cheer them on. Might as well - the Midshipmen beating the Irish is becoming old hat. Three out of the last four years after having lost something like 47 in a row.
-SF Giants head to the World Series to face the Texas Rangers. Whoop-de-doo. The Rangers first series. Go Rangers.
-Jimin Kang wins down in Malaysia with three birdies over her last four holes including one on the 18th hole. Julie Inkster bogeyed the same hole after birdieing four out of the previous five to take the lead through 17 holes. Good write-up here at lpga.com. The old inconsistent Michelle Wie showed up on Sunday; she had three bogeys, two double bogeys and four birds over her 18 holes. She finished in a very disappointing tie for 32nd place.
-Heading to the golf course for a Sunday morning walk. Looks like another excellent October day for us and, with the Colts taking the weekend off, you might as well get your sticks out and go smack that little white ball around. Of note: One of these days we're going to get some rain. Tonight? Tomorrow? Wouldn't count on it...

V-Ballers: Tya Harmon, Shaelin Adams and Nicole Harder
Tya Harmon and fellow Viking friends celebrating a winning shot at last night's v-ball sectionals. In the second photo, Shaelin Adams and Nicole Harder of the Shoals Jug Rox are ready at the net.
Bits and Pieces
-Tomorrow's Saturday Morning Scramble start time will be 9am. That will give us all a chance to get up to North Daviess and catch the Lions' v-ball game at 12:30.
-The Ladies are playing over in Malaysia. Michelle Wie had four birds and a bogey in her round and is tied for fourth at three under. Mika Miyazato, from Okinawa, Japan, and Jee Young Lee, from South Korea, are on top at five under.
-The Lakeview Seniors are losing one of their own. Ray Shaw and his wife Carol are moving back to Kansas City. Ray has been a fixture in the Thursday Leagues for what seems like forever - maybe ten years, maybe twelve or more. He has promised to bring his clubs with him when he returns to Loogootee for visits so expect we'll see him on occasion. That's good.
-Looks like at least several more days of really nice weather - temps in the 70's. By this time next week, temps in the 60's - that should be pretty nice as well. Take advantage of all this good stuff - go golf, and get that hole-in-one you've been waiting for (or at least try for it).

V-Ball Games and Doug and the Radio Guys
Diane and I were up at North Daviess last night catching the first couple of games of this year's volleyball sectional. Barr Reeve and Shoals both won easily, the Vikings over the North Daviess Cougars and the Jug Rox over the Washington Catholic Cardinals. The winners meet in the first game on Saturday while the Loogootee Lions take on the Vincennes Rivet Patriots in the second (around 12:30). Championship Saturday eveing at 7. Expect it will be the Vikings and the Lions. Between games, one of our own golfers and also assistant v-ball coach of the Lions, Doug Denson, was up with the radio guys. Wonder if Doug was asked how in heaven's name the Lions were going to stop Tya Harmon? If he was, expect he had an answer. Wait a minute - that would be thinking too far ahead - gotta take care of the Patriots first. Guess the question would have been 'how was Vincennes going to stop Tya?'.
Wallace and Bird Win Thursday Morning Scramble
Vic Wallace and Mike Bird shot a 34 gross and a 28.67 net to win the Thursday Morning Scramble this week. Bits and Pieces
-Thursday Morning Scramble here in just a little bit - 10am start.
-The Curt Johnson/Tracy Rayhill vs Tony Trambaugh/Mike Bird series is all tied up. Bird and Trambaugh evened things up with a convincing 6-1 win last night. That would be skins and flags in a scramble format. The first match was won by Curt and Tracy with the second one ending in a tie.
-Speaking of series: Anybody keeping up on the baseball playoffs? Phillies and Giants, Yankees and Texans. I remember hearing that the Phillies were the favorites to win it all but not much else.
-Best get my butt outta here and over to the golf course.

The Race for Glory Among the Women Golfers
Here's the latest on the Rolex Rankings among the women. Ai Miyazato Japan) stays in first with Cristie Kerr (USA) in second. Top five are from five different countries spanning the globe. That's pretty neat to my way of thinking.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Oct. 18, 2010 - The top-five ranked players in the world - No. 1 Ai Miyazato, No. 2 Cristie Kerr, No. 3 Jiyai Shin, No. 4 Yani Tseng and No. 5 Suzann Pettersen - will compete head-to-head for the first time this week since they last met more than a month ago at the P&G NW Arkansas Championship Presented by Walmart.
As the LPGA moves east for the inaugural playing of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, the question remains, "Who is the No. 1 female golfer on the planet?" Rolex Rankings No. 2 Cristie Kerr nearly reclaimed the coveted No. 1 position in each of her last two starts. One shaved shot in either tournament could have place Kerr at the head of the class.
The race to be Rolex Rankings No. 1 ignited in May following the retirement of Lorena Ochoa and has sizzled with three players from three different countries - American Kerr, Japan's Miyazato and South Korean Shin - taking turns as the top player in the world. Two more players - Taiwan's Tseng and Norwegian Pettersen - have challenged for the No. 1 spot on a weekly basis and remain in the mix to hold the top spot at season's end.
Only 0.54 average points separates the current Rolex Rankings No. 1 Miyazato from No. 5 Pettersen. No. 6 Na Yeon Choi sits a little less than a full point behind Pettersen. The remaining five events on the 2010 schedule will determine which players--if any--can make the necessary jump to topple Miyazato from the top.
Michell Wie is #7 in the rankings.
Jeffers, Potts, Stoll and Jones Triumph

-Trooper Rocco Mediate battled the weather, rainy and cold, on Sunday, shot 5 over through the first 13 holes, but dropped in an eagle at 17 and hit a five footer for par on 18 to win the Frys.com Open by a shot over Bo Van Pelt and Alex Pugh. Must have been pretty cool for the guy who battled TW at the US Open a few years back to finally return to the winners' circle - first time since 2002. Looks like he also saved himself a trip to Q School.
-And while a 48 year old was winning on the men's side, Beatriz Recari, a young Spanish lady in her early 20's, was winning the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge out in California. She managed to bogey her 17th hole and then par the 18th to win over Gwladys Nocera and Karine Icher by a stoke. Check out this interview of the winner which includes her ride at 200mph with Mario Andretti.
-Irish have an easy time with Western Michigan on Saturday. And the Colts have an adventure with the Redskins last night. North Daviess did lose down at Springs Valley Friday night - by a point. Sectionals next week for them.
-Lion volleyball team also heads into the sectionals this week. They start Thursday up at North Daviess - the Lions have one of the byes and won't play their first game till Saturday around 12:30. They beat up on the South Knox Spartans last Friday night, winning in three games.
-Something to try: Been pulling my approach shots way more than I want to and tried opening my stance and the club face a bit to see if that would correct it. Come across the ball with my swing and did hit it pretty consistently in the right direction. Will try it some more again later today to see if that lessens the pull to the left.
-Left the golf course in good hands after my walk out there this morning. Rex Hudson, Dick Lemmon, Jack Lents and Jack Butcher were just about ready to start their 18 hole game. They play a team game where each player partners up with another for six holes and then switches to one of the other players. That way they get to play with each of the other players. The scoring is low ball, low total, with a point being awarded for each on each hole. Get the most points over the six holes and your team wins the game. They also play against each other for skins and flags. Gets very competitive.
-Coming up this week: Tuesday Afternoon Scramble at 5pm. Thursday Morning Scramble at 10am. Saturday Morning Scramble to be decided depending on the weather/temperature.

Stan Graber and Mike Bird fired a four under nine hole round of 31 to tie Mark Potts and Greg Potts in Saturday's scramble at Lakeview with the card draw tiebreaker going to the Bird/Graber team. The winning twosome had birdies at #4 and #8 and an eagle at #6 where, after Graber's fairway shot used a fortuitous tree deflection to get just off the backside of the green, Bird chipped in for an eagle. Potts and Potts had five birds on their round but found a bogey at #3, one that cost them the trophy. Three other twosomes competed in the Saturday morning event with Travis Brett and Steve Qualkenbush carding a 32, Dave Wininger and Kevin Byron a 33, and Short Jeffers and Joe Allen a 36.
Mike Bird, Dick Lemmon and Vic Wallace shot a three under par 32 to win the Thursday Morning Scramble out at Lakeview. After Bird rolled in an over the ridge putt at #5 for birdie, Dick Lemmon knocked down a Vic Wallace dart to five feet at nine for the team's second birdie. Dick did the honors again at #1, the team's seventh hole, by pitching to seven feet and then rolling in the putt for the team's third and decisive bird. The threesome beat out the teams of Junior Byron, Ray Shaw and Denny Wagoner (33), and Tony Wease, Jack Lents and Pam Byron (34). The Byron/Shaw/Wagoner team had four birdies on their round but self destructed by bogeying holes three and four. Of note: Jack Lents' shot at #7 hit the stick and dropped and stopped at the six inch mark in front of the cup. Made for an easy bird and a hard luck miss of an ace.
Wayne Souerdike and Stan Graber had a three under par round of 32 to claim the top spot in the Tuesday Afternoon Scramble. The twosome started out well by rolling in a birdie putt from off the green at #1, then managed to birdie the par fives from the wrong fairways, and finished with a sand save at nine to stay at three under for their round. Souerdike and Graber topped six other teams competing for the low score. Finishing at two under were the teams of Travis Brett and Tracy Rayhill, Dave Wininger and George Templin, Doug Denson and Joe Allen, and Mike Bird and Greg Potts. Nick Wininger and Joe Doyle along with Mike Kidwell and Steve Qualkenbush carded scores of one under.

Bits and Pieces
-Just opened up espn.com, the golf section, and lo and behold Rocco Mediate is back in the news! He's the leader down at the Frys.com Open. (So, what is Frys.com?)
-Brittany Lincicome leads the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge out in Danville, CA. She's at 11 under and leads Wendy Ward by 4 strokes. No Michelle Wie in this tournament.
-We did have a measurable rain out at the golf course the other day - a quarter inch of that rare commodity of the last several months. Fairways remain dry and hard - still lots of run. The greens, with the cooler weather, have not needed to be as heavily watered as during the hotter days, and have become faster - does take an adjustment.
-Tomorrow's scramble will start at 10am because of the dip in the temperatures tonight - supposed to get down to 35. You could use that extra hour to take somebody out to breakfast at the Lake, or the Corner Cafe.
-Will be going to the volley ball game tonight - the Lions play South Knox.
-Time for breakfast.

Bird, Lemmon and Wallace Win Thursday Scramble
Mike Bird, Dick Lemmon and Vic Wallace shot a three under par 32 to win the Thursday Morning Scramble out at Lakeview. After Mike Bird rolled a short but fast and downhill putt in at #5 for birdie, Dick Lemmon knocked down a Vic Wallace dart to five feet at nine for the team's second birdie. Shoreline Clean-up
Guys from the Park were over yesterday morning cleaning up the shoreline adjacent to #7 and #8. They will bring in some rip rap to 'shore up' the badly eroded area there just next to #7's green. And, yes, they have picked up some of those golf balls you put down there over the years.
Souerdike and Graber Win Tuesday Scramble
Wayne Souerdike and Stan Graber had a three under round of 32 to claim the top spot in the Tuesday Afternoon Scramble. The twosome started out well by rolling in a birdie putt from off the green at #1, then managed to birdie the par fives from the wrong fairways, and finished with a sand save at nine to stay at three under for their round. Wininger, Allen, Doyle and Pedro Win Saturday Scramble
Dave Wininger, Joe Allen, Joe Doyle and Jerry Pedro stumbled home with a nine hole round of four under this past Saturday at Lakeview. That was good enough to tie Mike Bird, Greg Potts and Jack Nickless and force a tiebreaker, a card draw, which they won. A third team, Wayne Souerdike, Larry Hembree and Kevin Byron, finished at two under par. Of note: Greg Potts ran in a thirty foot putt on #8, and then a twelve footer at #1, to get his team to the four under level and into the card draw for the prize.
Wayne Souerdike and Vic Wallace shot a net 29.67 (gross 36) to nip Mike Bird and Pam Byron by a stroke (30.67 and 36) in the Thursday Morning Scramble at Lakeview. Wayne's approach from 80 yards at #8 to three feet and the following putt for birdie turned out to be the winning shot. Ken Hudson, playing with Junior Byron, pitched one in from 100 yards out for an eagle on the same hole. He and Junior finished in third with a net 31.00 (gross 34). Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon dragged in the caboose, carding a net 33.33 on a gross of 39.
George Templin hit a 70 yard pitch shot for eagle at #5 and Joe Doyle rolled in a 20' putt on #1 for birdie as the two seniors paired up with Nick Wininger and Derek Gilbertson to win the Tuesday Afternoon Scramble at Lakeview. The foursome finished their nine holes at seven under with the Templin and Doyle shots making the difference as they won by two over three other teams competing for the prize. The three teams coming in at five under: Dave Wininger, Greg Potts and Joe Allen; Doug Denson, Noah Callahan and Steve Qualkenbush; and Mike Bird, Travis Brett and Ryan Johnson.

-Last Friday night, Tony Trambaugh showed up at 5pm to play a bit of golf. As Tracy Rayhill and Curt Johnson were already on the course (on #4 as it turned out, giving them a nice four hole warm up), I suggested we take them on in a spur-of-the-moment scramble for skins and flags. Sounded like a good idea and Tracy and Curt went along with it. Tony and I spotted the other two a three hole advantage by getting bogeys on the first three holes (couldn't chip, couldn't putt) against their pars. After tying birds at #4, Tony and I got on the board with a bird at #5 against their 8. But then came six and the turning point of the match. With our side already on the green with a likely two putt for par, Tracy and Curt were looking at a third shot from in front of #7 tee box. Getting the ball up in the air and then to stop on the green and then two putt would be a most welcome outcome. Tracy went first, hit way behind the ball and got just enough of it to get it airborne; the ball hits the cart path, takes a big bounce, lands on the green and then slides past the hole and just off the green, giving their side a for sure two putt twelve footer and a possible birdie. Curt tries his hand, does pretty much the same thing, the hit-behind-the-ball-hit-the-cart-path-land-on-green-run-towards-the-hole shot, and has his ball end up some eight feet left of the pin. Well, you can guess the rest of the story, at least at #6: Tony and I do get our two putt; Curt gives Tracy a good line with his putt and then Tracy runs his in for birdie. Hole to Tracy and Curt. Tony and I did get #7 (got a birdie and a flag) but 8 and 9 were washes and we lost the match to Tracy, Curt and whomever that third person was back on #6.
-Dick Lemmon, recent golf fanatic convert, got the first eagle of his budding career on Sunday afternoon, chipping in a forty footer at #4. He and Dave Brown were enjoying a nine hole round after the struggling Colts put away the surprisingly tough Kansas City Chiefs. (Expect Ray Shaw will have something to say about that. Anybody know if he and Carol are back from Kansas City?)
-DJ Harder, former Shoals golfing ace, was in for a nine hole round with girlfriend Jennifer (from Indy) late Friday afternoon. DJ, a freshman, is sixth man on the Oakland City College Golf Team.
-Aussie Katherine Hull came from three back to win the Navistar LPGA Classic down in Alabama. Brittany Lincicome finished second, one shot back while the third round leader, Cristie Kerr, finished in a tie for third with Na Yeon Choi. From espn.com and the AP:
-Not yet mentioned: Irish win on Saturday against Pitt. They did give Pitt the chance to win it in the fourth quarter with some errors on the offensive side - dropped passes, negated td's on penalties, and on the defensive side with late hits out of bounds that gave the other side new life. As with the Colts, it's the 'W' that counts, right? (Whatever happened to it's how you play the game?!)
-Looks like Tiger is finally going to lose his #1 world ranking but not to Phil Mickelson. Lee Westwood tapped to go to #1 here directly. But...
A little volatility at the top. That's a bit different after TW's long stay there. (From espn.com and the AP.)
-Coming up this week at Lakeview:
-Today is Columbus Day. Sunny and hot. Go golf.
-Tuesday afternoon scramble - starts at 5pm.
-Thursday morning scramble - starts at 10am.
-Saturday morning scramble - start time to be determined.

Kerr shot a 72 to tie for third at 17 under with Na Yeon Choi (69). Kerr played the first 50 holes in 20 under, then was 3 over on the final 22.-Already mentioned: Colts won yesterday.
"Today, things just didn't go my way," Kerr said. "If I had played half as well as I had played the first three days, it would have been no contest." Playing in the final group with Hull, Kerr pushed her approach shot to the right of the green on 18 and two-putted for a bogey. Had she won the tournament, she would have earned enough points to take over first place in the Rolex Player of the Year standings. She remained third behind Yani Tseng and Ai Miyazato.

His stay at No. 1 may be short-lived. With Woods, Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Phil Mickelson likely playing in the $7 million HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai, any one of the four could wind up atop the following week's rankings.

Bits and Pieces
-Corrected the Tuesday Scramble blog here - Joe Doyle's putt was on hole #1 (not #6). Found that out in talking with George Templin this afternoon; he also let me know that his eagle 'chip' was from about 70 yards out. Guess that would make it a pitch, wouldn't it? The other three three man teams in the Tuesday Afternoon Scramble, each coming in at five under: Dave Wininger, Greg Potts and Joe Allen; Doug Denson, Noah Callahan and Steve Qualkenbush; Mike Bird, Travis Brett and Ryan Johnson. Of note: Ryan's short game was better than his long game, at least Tuesday afternoon; he and his Scottie Cameron putter were working very well together.
-For Tracy and Curt: There's about a two and a half hour difference between the sunset on June 21st and December 21st. So Tracy's remembering that we lost a minute of daylight each day once we got to the Summer Solstice is right on. Of course, we get it back at about the same rate once we get past the Winter Solstice. This time of year seems like darkness falls more rapidly and the days get shorter in more of a hurry.
-Down in Alabama, Cristi Kerr leads the Navistar by a single stroke at seven under par. The youngster, Alexis Thompson, is at six under and is three under par through seven holes today. Michelle Wie is not playing in this tournament (dang...).
-It's lovely out at the golf course. Already been out for a morning walk - these same four deer were racing across the fairways from somewhere in #8 (or maybe even #7) back to the woods at #5 - expect they spotted me walking on top of the dam by #9 tee box.
-Tomorrow's scramble will start at 9 in the morning. Nine holes and all are welcome.

Bits and Pieces
-Thursday morning scramble at 10am. Nine holes; all welcome.
-LPGA races for all the honors - Rolex #1, Rookie of the Year, POY, VARE and money leader. If you are a ladies' golf fan, you recognize the names: Shin, Tseng, Choi, Miyazato, Wie, Pettersen, Kerr, all in the running for the top spots. The LPGA, golf's 'global tour', finishes up the year with seven tournaments in five countries starting with the Navistar LPGA Classic down in Prattville, Alabama, this coming Thursday through Sunday. Malaysia, South Korea, Japan and Mexico tournaments are also hosting tournaments these next three months. (Seems like a rush to finish after the sparseness of the schedule the last two months.)
-Ladies who won't be in Prattville (from Seoul Sisters):
-A lot of hacks are in the process of grading the boys who played in the Ryder Cup. Can't you hear Bobby Knight out there somewhere screaming at them for their complete ignorance of the game since they aren't playing? Seems kind of silly to me - did enough grading of youngsters in my time to want to do it never again.
-Just about time for breakfast and Diane's thinking the same. Guess I'll go share a table with her.

Both Miyazatos jet back from Japan with different results from the Japan Women's Open: Ai-sama is still #1 despite finishing well off the pace of Mika-chan's maiden professional win, which moves her up 15 slots to #24.

Bits and Pieces
-Irish win over Boston College in the Catholic Bowl. Second year in a row the Irish have won after losing to BC in what seemed like forever.
-Colts lose: Figured they left too much time on the clock with the Jags long kicker. Nice final drive by Manning and his boys - clutch.
-Ryder Cup just decided. Hunter Mahan unable to do what Ricky Fowler did - win the last couple of holes to halve the match and keep the Cup on this side of the pond. Tiger and Phil have good days. Too bad that's noteworthy. Maybe next year we'll see the world's #1 and #2 play with a little more consistency and excellence.
-Congrats again to the September Challenge winners, John Drake and Tom McAtee. Fun tournament.
-Will try a Tuesday afternoon scramble tomorrow. Five o'clock start.

Former Sunday Golfer Now a Fisherman
Tom Hays pretty much traded in his golf clubs for a fishing line sometime late this past Spring. Caught him out at the golf course just off of #7 green this afternoon. He had already reeled in a pan full of catfish and was looking for some more. He seems to be quite pleased with the way things are going...

Patty shot a gross 44 with a 20 handicap that included a birdie at #2. Pam shot a gross 48 with a 13 handicap and she found a birdie at #9.
