In Thursday League play, Pam Byron and Patty Bowling made short shift of Joe Gray and Bob Elliott and took a commanding lead into next week's final team event. The two won their match by a score of 11.5 to 2.5 and widened their lead to 9.5 points over Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson who won their match with Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon, 9.5 to 4.5. The only other team with a chance at winning the team championship, Mike Bird and Jack Lents, won their match with Dick Barber and John Chapman by a score of 10.5 to 3.5, and head to next week's play an even ten points behind the leaders and a half point behind the second place team. In next week's play, Byron and Bowling will go out against Butcher and Hudson while Bird and Lents will face off against the fourth place team, Dane Mosby and Ed Summers.
In the individual competition, Jack Lents and Dave Brown moved into a tie at the top with a season total of 570 points. Each of the two had rounds of 40 with Lents' resulting in an even par 35 and 28 points while Brown's was a net 33 and 42 points. Last week's leader, Joe Gray, slipped to third after a net 39 round and only 17 points.
Low scores for the day were posted by Wayne Pearl, Denny Wagoner and Mike Bird, each with a net 30; by Mike Bird, with a gross 33; and by the team of Dave Strange and Denny Wagoner with a net team score of 61. Average gross for the day was 44.06, up half a stroke from last week.
Of note: Al Kavanaugh posted a one under round of 34 and dropped his handicap to 1 for next week's event. His average gross for the season of 38.177 is the best in the league. The league's Individual Flighted Tournament, a four week, 36 hole event, starts in two weeks.
