Notes on Community League Play

The Community League at Lakeview came to a rousing close this past week with Flight champions being crowned and the top spots in the regular season's team and individual competition being decided.  In the Flighted Tournament, Mike Bird shot a closing 38 and ended with a score of 145 to best Ken Wagler by three strokes in the A Flight.  In the B Flight, Mike Arvin (total 153) carded a 39 in the fourth week and nipped his playing partner, Scott Schutte, by a single stroke; Scott's fourth week score was a 38.  In C Flight, Ken Frye's closing round 42 and total score of 166 gave him a three stroke victory over second place finisher, Gary LaMar.  Perry Yoder, with a total of 187, also won by three in D Flight, his victory coming over Virgil Harper.  In E Flight, Sharon Frye cruised to an 18 stroke victory over Shirley Jeffers, finishing with a score of 202 for the tournament.

In regular season action, changes at the top were the order of the day.  Mike Arvin and Scott Schutte caught and passed Dale Yoder and Allen Yoder (who had held the top spot all season!) to win the team competition.  Arvin and Schutte (218 total points) scored 26 points in the last week's play while the Yoders (213 total points) failed to garner a single point.   The team of Gary and Terry LaMar finished third with 201 points.  In the individual competition, Gary LaMar posted a 43 and got 31 points for his play over the final week of the season.  That gave him just enough points to catch the season's leader, Allen Yoder, and tie him for the individual competition's championship with each having a total of 470 points.  Tyson Stoll, who scored 45 points in last week's play, finished in third place a single point behind the champs.  The week's low scores were turned in by Adam Wagler with a low net of 26, by Ken Wagler with a low gross of 35, and by the team of Adam Wagler and Tyson Stoll with a low net team score of 60.  Average group score for the week was 44.34.  Next up for the Community League participants: Lakeview's September Challenge, a three event, two person team game starting the week of September 12th and open to all league members.

Notes on Thursday Match Play League

Week 2 of the four week Individual Flighted Tournament is on the books with challengers making a move on the leaders.  In A Flight, Junior Byron's four stroke lead after week one all but disappeared with Al Kavanaugh and Mike Bird carding 36's and drawing within one stroke of the top.  In B Flight, Tony Wease followed his 39 of a week ago with a Flight best of 40 to expand his lead to three strokes over Terry LaMar.  C Flight saw Ken Hudson come in with a 41 to close in on Jim Bateman; Jim shot a 43 and still retains the lead but by a single stroke.  Pam Byron shot a second consecutive 50 and opened up a three stroke lead over Joe Gray in D Flight.  In E Flight, Wilma Bateman shot a 53 and opened up an eleven stroke lead on Clyde Wake.

In the regular season individual competition, Jim Bateman, with 527 points total, stayed on top but saw both Al Kavanaugh (505 points) and Mike Bird (498 points) close to within striking distance with two weeks to go in the season.  Low scores for the day were posted by Ken Hudson, Al Kavanaugh and Ray Shaw in the net score category with rounds of 32; and by Al Kavanaugh and Mike Bird with 36's for the low gross.  Hole prizes were claimed by Wayne Pearl at #7, Dave Brown at #8, and Ken Hudson at #9.  Average gross score for the group was 45.00, up slightly from last week's 44.61.

Notes on Tuesday Men's League Play

Dave Wininger used three consecutive birdies (holes 2, 3 and 4), a host of pars and a single bogey to post a 33 on the fourth day of the Flighted Tournament.  That gave him a 36 hole total of one under par (139) and the A+ championship.  Mike Kidwell, the leader by one at the start of the day's play, posted a 37 and finished second at two over par.  In flights B through D, the leaders after three rounds prevailed: Terry Butcher in A Flight posted a 38 and a +8 for the tournament for the top spot, besting Terry Padgett's +11 in second place.  In B Flight, Greg Potts left no doubt that he intended to stay at the top by firing an early even par round of 35; that gave him a total of +7 for the tournament and an eight stroke victory over Terry LaMar and Steven Downey.  Larry Sutton carded a 39 that gave him a total of +15 and a four stroke victory over Mike Breeden in the C Flight.  In D Flight, Brent Courter finished in grand style with a nifty 38 and a +21 that gave him a four stroke margin over second place finisher Tim Voegerl.  In E Flight, Charlie Sheetz limped in with a 57 on the day and a total of +64 but was the only one standing at the end of play in his flight.

Low scores for the day were posted by Scott Arthur and Dennis Brosmer with net 26's; by Dave Wininger with a gross 33; and by the team of Tom Trambaugh and Dennis Brosmer with a team low net of 62.  Hole prizes were taken by Doug Denson, Mike Breeden and Dave Wininger at the par 3's, and by George Templin, Rob Rollins and Gary LaMar with long putts.  In team competition, the Courter/Sutton team, along with the Padgett/Padgett team made the biggest leaps on the day, scoring 54 and 44 points to close in on the Johnson/Parker team.  Johnson and Parker still lead at 628 points, a 17 point margin over Rollins and Harmon, and Courter and Sutton.  Bric Parker posted a nifty 40 for his day's work, scored 87 points and expanded his lead in the individual competition.  Group average gross for the day was 41.16, down about a half a stroke from last week's 41.62.  On Tuesday, August 31: special shot placement contests at both hole #2 and hole #7.
