Notes on Thursday Match Play League
The top two teams in the Thursday League for the last several weeks will duke it out for the team championship next week after each of them scored 10-4 wins over their opponents in yesterday's play. Frank and Susan Fee polished off Al Kavanaugh and Mike Anderson while Jim and Wilma Bateman did the same against Ray Shaw and Dave Brown. The two leaders are separated by a mere two and a half points with the third place team of Wayne Pearl and Junior Byron, 9 to 5 winners over the fourth place team of Jack Lents and Mike Bird, too far back to get to the top in next week's final day of team competition. Low scores for the day belonged to Junior Byron who attained a rare double in getting both the low gross and the low net for individual play. He carded a 33 gross and a 30 net in a round that included two birdies and seven pars. Frank and Susan Fee shot the low net team score with a 67. Hole prizes were claimed by John Chapman at #7, Junior Byron at #8, and Susan Fee at #9. In individual competition, Jack Lents and Al Kavanaugh gained ground on the leaders, John Chapman and Mike Bird, with net rounds of 32 and 31. With five weeks to go and some 50+ points available each week, several players remain in contention for the top prize. Chapman with 452 points leads Bird by 18, with Lents in third at 429 points. Dave Brown (426 points) sits in fourth, with Jim Bateman another ten points back in fifth, and Kavanaugh in sixth, 49 points from the top. On the day, the group average gross score was 46.48, up more than a stroke over the previous week's 45.37.
