Notes on Thursday Match Play League

Jim Bateman's fantastic finish on Thursday morning sealed the deal on the Team championship and vaulted him into second place in the Individual standings.  John Chapman still leads but by just four points after giving away five strokes on the last two holes in his round of 42.  Low scores for Thursday's play were turned in by Terry LaMar with a low net of 27 on an even par round of 35.  Junior Byron had the low gross with a one under round of 34 that included three birdies.  Vic Wallace and Joe Gray had the low team net of the day with a 63.  Hole prizes were claimed by Junior Byron at #7 and by Jim Bateman at both #8 and #9.  The League starts its final four weeks of the season with a multitude of players still in contention for the top spot and the Flighted Tournament running side by side with the regular season.  Top seeds in the flights are: Junior Byron in A Flight; Jack Lents in B Flight; Wayne Pearl in C Flight; Pam Byron in D Flight; and Carroll Rayhill in E Flight.

Jim and Wilma Bateman shot even par on the final three holes to catch and beat Susan and Frank Fee in the final team event in the Thursday League at Lakeview last Thursday morning. Jim Bateman birdied both #8 and #9 to put the cap on a season of team play that saw the two couples in the league duke it out for the top spot for most of the season. The Batemans started the day two and a half points behind the Fees and were the sentimental favorites heading out. Susan and Frank, the Young Turks in the League, gave it a good run but in the end were done in by the brilliant play of the Batemans over the last three holes.

Notes on Tuesday Men's League Play

Bryant Trambaugh chipped in on #8 and #9 for birdies and a sub 40 round of 39.  He joined several others in having multiple birdies on their scorecards.  Dave Wininger and Rob Rollins each had three in rounds of 34 and 35.  Players with two birds: Larry Sutton, Mike Kidwell, Chris Bledsoe, Mike Arvin (including a sand shot from the bunker at #7), and Skip Ackerman.  Steven Downey had the only eagle of the day at #4.  Low scores for the day: Dave Wininger and Travis Brett with 34's were the low gross; Travis Brett with a 25 for the low net; and Travis Brett and Chad Wade with a 58 for the low net team score.  Hole prizes: Mike Bird, Travis Brett and Rob Rollins with close to the pin shots; and Steven Downey and Bric Parker (2) with long putts.

At the midway point in the Individual Flighted Tournament, the leaders are:  Mike Kidwell with an even par 70 in the A+ Flight; Derek Gilbertson with a 73 in A Flight; Greg Potts with a 75 in B Flight; Larry Sutton with a 77 in C Flight; Tim Voegerl with an 81 in D Flight; and Mike Strawn with a 95 in E Flight.  Average gross for the group was 40.64.

Notes on Community League Play

Clint Knepp finished up the baseball season this past week and had some time to think about his golf game.  Apparently it did some good as Clint shot a very nifty 34 in his Community League round moving to the top of B Flight in the Flighted Tournament.  The 34, attained with eight pars and a single birdie, was good for the low gross round of the week.  Adam Wagler also had a pretty good outing, shooting an even par round of 35 that included birdies at the first two holes; the 35 gave Adam a net 26 and the low score in that category for the week.  Clint and his playing partner, Rob Graber, had the low net team score, a 61.  Leaders at the midway point in the other flights of the closing tournament for the league are Mike Bird with a 71 in A Flight, Gary LaMar with an 82 in C Flight, Paul Weisheit with a 92 in D Flight and Sharon Frye with a 103 in D Flight.  In regular season competition, the Yoders, Allen and Dale, continue to play consistently and well to maintain their position at the top of the team standings.  They have a 24 point lead over the LaMar brothers, Gary and Terry, with two weeks to go in the season.  Allen Yoder also enjoys a 24 point lead in the individual competition, with Gary LaMar holding onto second place.  Group average gross score for the week was a season low of 42.69.
