Thursday League Golfers

TMPL Results

This morning's league results are posted here

Thursday Match Play League Today at 9

A regular event today even though the other two leagues are playing only the mid season scramble this week.  As you probably remember, we had a scheduling glitch which was corrected by adding another date to the calendar.  Thursday Leaguers are still eligible to play in the scramble but must do it outside of the regularly scheduled event through this Saturday).

And we have news guys wearing the 'top-of-the-heap' jackets today, at least in the team competition.  John Chapman and Dick Barber climbed into first place last week and lead Pam Byron and Patty Bowling by 1.5 points.  Patty does still hold onto the top position in the individual standings though Richard Lemmon, Jack Butcher, Jack Lents and Mike McLaughlin are close enough to catch her if she falters.

Weather is beautiful; course is in great condition.  Best pack up your A game and come on down, all you Thursday Leaguers.

Btw, Dane Mosby and Ed Summers are filling the team 16 slots today and Denny Wagoner and Larry Sutton are taking care of the team 15 slots.

Early Wednesday Morning Golfers: Walter, Mindy and Larry

Tuesday Hole Prize Winners and Tuesday Men/Community League Match Play Brackets

In the Mixed League mid season 2 person scramble being held this week, 28 teams (25 Tuesday Men, 3 Community) have played so far with two teams tied for the low score and six teams within a stroke of that low score.  Final scores and results will be announced after members from each of the three leagues have the chance to come out and join in the fun (deadline: Saturday evening).

Hole prize winners from yesterday were Curt Johnson, Junior Byron and Brandon Inman with close to the pin shots at holes 3, 6 and 9, and Mark Potts, Terry LaMar and Tyler Walton with long putts at holes 4, 6 and 8.

Here are the brackets for the Tuesday Men's League and the Community League's July Match Play Tournaments that start next week.   Note that for the first week in each of the two leagues, the team with the low net score for the event advances.  In case of a tie, will go back on the card starting at hole #9.

Btw, isn't it time for another hole-in-one out at Lakeview?

The Midseason Scramble Handicap Calculation

Here's how it works: calculation: player A handicap plus player B handicap divided by 3 with a maximum of 9.  (Forgot to mention the 'maximum 9' in my earlier post.)

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Mid season (mixed league) 2 person scramble today for Tuesday Men:

-The scramble is handicapped (calculation: player A h'cap plus player B h'cap divided by 3).
-Pair up with your current partner or any other league member or substitute.
-You may play anytime this week - through Saturday.
-Entry fee is $2 per person - that would be $4 per team.

Of note:  The brackets have been established and filled for the start of next week's Match Play Tournament.  During the first two weeks, teams advance to the next stage by having the better nine hole net score.  Week three starts the actual match play.  Will post the brackets and tournament information later today.

Yani Tseng - the New Tiger Woods

Looking for the next Tiger Woods?  Found her.  Dominant performance by the 22 year old from Taiwan.  That would be a  dominant performance these last four days, the last four months, the last four years.  Good for her.

Community League Recap Event 4

Adrain Graber shot a final round net 33 to get to minus 12 and captured first place in the Community League's 36 hole Individual Handicapped Tournament.  Noah Callahan also shot a net 33 during the week and claimed second place one stroke back of Adrian.  Last week's leader of the tournament, Emanuel Wagler, shot a net 37 and slipped to third place.  In regular season action, six players tied at 31 for low net score for the week: Mike Bird, Jeremy Graber, Rob Graber, Clint Knepp, Larry Wininger and Rich Yoder.  Mike Bird also shot the low gross for the week, a 34.  The team low net was also a tie at 62 between the teams of Larry Wininger and Mike Bird, and Clint Knepp and Rob Graber.  Through four events, Emanuel Wagler and Adrian Graber continue to lead the team standings with a total of 86 points.  Allen Yoder and Jon Kemp are in second place with 68 points while Noah Callahan and Jeremy Wildman are in third with 67 points.  In individual competition, Adrian Graber's net 33 earned him 26 points and vaulted him into first place in the standings.  Noah Callahan earned the same amount and is in the second position while Larry Wininger's 45 points for the week got him to third place.  For the week, the players averaged 43.04, up almost a full stroke over the previous week's 42.19 average.

Along with the Tuesday Men's League, the Community League participates in the mixed league two person scramble this upcoming week.

Bird, Knepp, Stoll and Allen Win Saturday Scramble at Lakeview on Tiebreaker

Photo: Gary Knepp, Karry Stoll, Joe Allen and Mike Bird, winners of the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview with a score of five under par.     Photo by Pam Byron.

Gary Knepp rolled in a twelve foot putt from off the green for par at the third hole to get things started for his fellow teammates, Mike Bird, Karry Stoll and Joe Allen.  Karry Stoll's drive and approach shot on hole four gave the team an easy two putt for their first birdie.  Joe Allen ran in a ten footer at #5 for the second while Gary Knepp's eagle putt from 30 feet hit the cup and bounced away but left an easy birdie at six.  Mike Bird sank a 15 foot putt at seven and also stuck one close at #8 that led to Knepp's draining of a 3 footer for the last of the five birds.  The foursome tied the team of James Hager, Wayne Souerdike and Spenser Souerdike with a score of 30 and won the tie breaking card draw by Pam Byron.  Two other teams participated in the scramble.  Dave Wininger, Steve Norman, Larry Hembree and Curt Johnson finished at two under par while Short Jeffers, Tracy Rayhill, Greg Potts and Kevin Byron shot four under par, one shot shy of the winning score.

TMPL Event 10 Recap

With a final round score of one under par, Pam Byron claimed the trophy in the 36 hole Individual Handicapped Tournament.  Richard Lemmon, who started the day one behind Byron, shot a net 38 to finish four strokes back but still good enough for second place.  Joe Gray, Virgil Harper and Wayne Pearl all finished at minus 11 to tie for third place.  In regular season action, the team of John Chapman and Gary Lamar (subbing for Dick Barber) won their match against Terry LaMar and Virgil Harper by a score of 10 to 4 and vaulted into first place in the team standings.  Their season total of 85.5 points puts them 1.5 points ahead of last week's frontrunners, Pam Byron and Patty Bowling.  Pam and Patty lost their match with Dane Mosby and Mike Strawn, 10.5 to 3.5.  Patty Bowling did hold onto the top position in the individual competition even though she shot a disappointing 52 and garnered only two points for her efforts.  She leads Dick Lemmon by 6 points and Jack Butcher by 10.  Jack Lents and Mike McLaughlin are tied for 4th with 349 points.  Al Kavanaugh jumped six spots in the standings, from 12th to 6th, with a low gross round of 33 which included two birds and seven pars.  His net 30 on the day also tied him for low net honors with Ken Hudson and Tony Wease.  John Chapman and Gary LaMar's 63 captured the low net team honors.  Hole prizes were claimed by Vic Wallace with a shot to within a foot of the pin at #7, and by Frank Fee with a long putt at #8 and Mike Anderson with a close to the pin shot at #9.  Gross average for the group was 44.78, down more than a stroke from last week's 46.13.

Of note: Junior Byron had the only eagle of the day, a 2 at the second hole.  Mike Bird, Mike McLaughlin, Ken Hudson and Al Kavanaugh all had two birds in their rounds.

Coming up next Thursday for the Thursday Match Play League:  Regular season event #11.  League members are also invited to participate in the mixed league two person scramble being held throughout the week of June 26th.

TMPL Results

The results from this morning's league play are posted here.  Congrats to Pam Byron for her first place finish in the Individulal Handicapped Tournament.  She played one under par in her 4th round, finished at -17, and won by five strokes over Dick Lemmon, who had a plus 3 round on the day.  Joe Gray, Virgil Harper and Wayne Pearl finished at -11 in a tie for third place.

Thursday Players, Come on Down!

Going to be a great day for golf so get your stuff together and come on out and have a go at a hole-in-one or two, birdies, pars, and just plain fun.

The guys at the top in everything happens to be the gals.  Pam Byron heads into the last nine holes of the Individual Handicapped Tournament with a slim one stroke advantage over Dick Lemmon, four strokes over Wayne Pearl, and five over Jack Lents.  Patty Bowling heads up the Individual standings and is also being chased by Dick Lemmon and Jack Lents, the guys currently in the second and third positions.  In team play, Pam and Patty have ganged up and at present lead Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson by a slim three points and Dick Barber and John Chapman by five.  Things going to change today?  Expect they will, somewhere.

The leaders go out against Dane Mosby and Mike Strawn starting at hole #1 in a little bit.  Maybe Dane and Mike can rein them in a bit.  Course is in great condition and scoring has been easier: fairways are giving a bit of a run, greens are well watered, the rust in our clubs has all been knocked off, and the heat of summer has added limber to our bodies.  Sounds like a recipe for a low round.  So, come on down, Patty and Pam, leaders of everything in sight, and show us if you can stay on top for the next three hours or so.  Just remember, there are a bunch of guys, and at least one other gal, just itching to get a peek at what it's like way up there on top of things.

Tuesday Evening Play in the Rain

Posted by Picasa

Tuesday Men's League Event 10 Recap

Rain, rain, rain - it finally arrived shortly after six after being in the area most of the day.  It did not stop the rest of the Tuesday Men from completing their rounds.  The light rain stayed around for most of two hours.  During the rainy period, James Hager went out and shot his low of the year, a 33, which included two birdies and also turned out to be the low gross for the day.  Terry Butcher had a 34, Mark Potts a 35 and another six golfers, Mike Bird, Travis Brett, Alan Burch, Jordan Divine, Derek Gilbertson and Short Jeffers, each had 36's.  Jordan Divine's 36 netted out at 30 and that gave him a share of the low net with Tom Flynn.  Travis Brett, John Drake and Lee Wininger had net 31 rounds.  Low team score was turned in by Karry Stoll and Lee Wininger with a 63;  Mitch Jeffers and Jordan Divine along with Jon Boyd and Tom Flynn fired 64's.  Hole prizes were claimed by TJ McAtee, Derek Gilbertson and Short Jeffers with close to the pin shots while Tony Wease, Jon Boyd and Ryan Johnson sank long putts.  Group average for the day was 41.86, down almost half a stroke from the previous week and the low for the season so far.  At the top of the standings following event 10 play:  Curt Johnson and Tyler Walton in team competition supplanted John Walker and Skip Ackerman with a total of 409 points to 401 points.  John Drake, at 773 points, replaced Tom Walker at the top in the individual competition.  Tom slipped to second with 766 points.  Skip Ackerman at 747 and Jake Divine at 737 are in the third and fourth positions.

In the final nine holes of the Individual Handicapped Tournament, Gary LaMar shot a minus 2 on the day while Tom Walker shot a plus 2 in his round.  The four stroke difference made LaMar a winner by one stroke with a 36 hole total of minus 13.  Walker had to settle for second with a minus 12.  John Drake, with a final day net of four under par, moved up to third place at minus 11.  Mike Arvin, Terry Butcher and Mitch Jeffers each finished at minus 10 for a share of fourth place.

Coming up next week: Mixed League mid season two man scramble.  Play with your partner or any other league player or substitute.

Tuesday Men's League Results Event 10 Posted

Today's league results are posted here.  Congrats to Gary LaMar for his winning score of 13 under par, low score for the 36 hole Individual Handicapped Tournament.  Tom Walker came in second with a minus 12 while John Drake finished in the third position with a score of minus 11.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Chance of rain this afternoon so pick and choose your playing time.  Of course, it may all drift to the west and north of us.  The course is in great condition so scoring should be on the easy side.  Still got all those creeks out there and #5 still has that pasture to the right but if you hit more or less straight, you shouldn't have any problem.  As Darren Clark says, put the ball in the fairway, knock it onto the green and make a putt every now and then - prescription for a good round.  And if you're having trouble with your putting, follow Ben Hogan's advise: get the ball closer to the hole on your approach shot.  Good stuff, right?

The leaders as the day starts:

-Individual Handicapped Tournament: Tom Walker at -14.  Gary LaMar is three back, Kevin Byron and Mitch Jeffers four back, and Kent Summers and Tyler Walton five back.  This is the fourth and final week of the tournament.

-Team standings: John Walker and Skip Ackerman with 383 points.  Curt Johnson and Tyler Walton second at 364; Tom Walker and the Birdman third at 360.

-Individual standings: Tom Walker at 748 points with Jake Divine at 736 and Dan Jones at 682.

Lots of points to be made out there.  All starts with making a good swing and hitting the ball well.  Better make a good club selection as well.  You do that, the scoring's going to take care of itself.  Right?  Right.  Ok, come on down and have a go at it.

Btw, next week is the mixed league mid season two person scramble.  Play with your partner or with any other league member or substitute.

Sunday Evening Golfers Waiting

Community League Recap Event 3

The Community League's Individual Handicapped Tournament tightened dramatically this past week as four players contend for the title as the tournament enters its fourth and final nine hole week.  Emanuel Wagler, firing a gross 38 and a net 31, took over the top position with a score of eleven strokes under par.  A stroke back is Adrian Graber.  Noah Callahan is in third at minus nine while Stan Graber, on the strength of an even par round of 35 and a net 31, sits in the fourth position.  Three other players, Terry LaMar, Duane Wagler, and Larry Wininger, at minus five, have an outside chance of claiming the trophy.  Low scores for the league this past week belong to Tyson Stoll with a net 29, Stan Graber for his gross of 35, and the team of Allen Yoder and Jonathan Kemp for a team low net of 61.  No change at the top of the standings as the Emanuel Wagler/Adrian Graber team maintain a comfortable lead of 18 points over second place team Stand Graber and Ryan Graber.  Emanuel Wagler's lead in the individual standings is slimmer, a narrow four points over partner Adrian Graber.  Noah Callahan is in third eight points from the top.  Average gross score for the group was 42.19, down about a stroke and a half from the previous week's 43.63.

Wininger and Byron Shine in Rained Out Scramble

Dave Wininger and Kevin Byron scrambled to a super low score of 29 in yesterday's Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview but all for naught.  Dave And Kevin were part of a foursome that circled the course and got back to the clubhouse shortly after rain storms settled in for the rest of the morning.  Three other teams of two were just past the midpoint in their round when the rains came down and cancelled the entire scramble.

TMPL Event 9 Recap

Patty Bowling and Pam Byron continued their dominance of league and tournament play yesterday with net rounds of 32 and 33.  Patty earned 51 points for her efforts and maintains her hold on the top position in the individual standings.  Her 359 points tops Dick Lemmon's 344 points; Jack Lents is in third place with 332 points.  Pam's net 33 kept her in the lead of the Individual Handicapped Tournament with a score of minus 16.  Her lead did narrow to a single stroke as Dick Lemmon's net 30 on the day brought him to minus 15 in the tournament.  Wayne Pearl, at minus 12, and Jack Lents at minus 11, sit in the third and fourth positions with nine holes to go in the tournament.  In team competition, Jack Lents and Mike Bird took on the leaders, Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson.  In a close match which was even through six holes, the Lents-Bird team won two of the last three holes to win the match portion of the game, 5 to 4; they also won the low net portion by two strokes, 71-73.  That gave them a 10-4 victory, one which allowed the Byron-Bowling team, a 10.5 to 3.5 winner in their match with Junior Byron and Wayne Pearl, to slip into first place in the standings with a total of 80.5 points.  Butcher and Hudson, at 77.5, are in second place while the team of Dick Barber and John Chapman, 11 to 3 victors in their match with Dane Mosby and Ed Summers, hold third place.  Low scores for Thursday's  play were turned in by Junior Byron with a 37 gross, by Mike McLaughlin and Virgil Harper with net 30's, and by the Byron-Bowling team with a 65 (-7) in team scoring.  Mike McLaughlin also claimed the close to the pin prize at #7; Junior Byron the same prize at #9.  Terry LaMar rolled in the longest putt at #8 to claim the third hole prize of the day.  Average gross score for the group ballooned to 46.13, two strokes higher than the 44.06 posted seven days earlier.

TMPL Results

This morning's league results are posted here.

Thursday Players, Come on Down!

Another Thursday is upon us and the day is sunny and warm.  Best get those clubs in your vehicle, grab a cup of coffee and head to the golf course just north of Loogootee.  Here are the guys and gals with the targets on their backs (those holding top positions):

-Pam Byron at -13 leads the Individual Handicapped Tournament.

Patty Bowling with 308 points tops the Individual standings for the regular season.

-Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson are leaders in the Team standings with 73.5 points.

Patty and Pam go out against the field so we all get to take our best shots at knocking them off of their pedestals in the individual competitions.  But Junior Byron and Wayne Pearl get to keep an eye on them as they go up against them in the team competition.  As for Jack and Rex, they take on Jack Lents and the Birdman, the leaders of the St. Mary's Road gang.

Eric and his boys have the course in tip top shape and the pin placements are no doubt going to be challenging.  Our task, on this Thursday while several other more widely known golfers will be teeing it up at the US Open, is to  make the circuit in as few strokes as possible and to have a whale of a time in the process.  Expect we all can do that whale thingee wherever we might be this morning, but, what the heck, Lakeview Golf Course is where our Thursday morning pals are getting together.  Come on down, guys and gals, the show is about to begin.

New Guy Helping Out

That would be Ezra Thompson from Odon and the Cougar football team.  He, along with DJ Harder, and sons Lucas and Ian, are Eric's able assistants out on the course this summer.

The Little Guy Is Back

That would be Charlie Sheetz who was at the golf course on Monday playing some golf with Mike Strawn and Tony Wease.  Charlie has been laid up with a medical issue for the last several weeks.  Glad to be off of your 'butt' and out on the greens, Charlie?  Expect so.

Tuesday Men's League Event 9 Recap

Yesterday's play saw multiple birdie raining down on several of the Tuesday Men with Derek Gilbertson leading the group with four of them at holes 2, 4, 6 and 8.  James Hager picked up three birds, at 4, 5 and 6, and tied Terry Butcher at 34 for the low gross round of the day. Terry also had three birds, at holes 2, 4 and 6.  Two bird men were Tracy Rayhill, Curt Johnson, Dan Jones, Dave Wininger and Tom Walker, who started his second straight sub 40 round with birds.  Josh Hawkins, with a round of 36, had a single bird but also the only eagle of the day.  The low net score of the day was claimed by Curt Johnson with a 26 on a gross of 39, also his second straight sub 40 round.  Charlie Lyon's net 28 was good for second in low net; he, too, had a second straight sub 40 round.  Johnson and partner Tyler Walton combined for the low team score with a 57.  Hole prizes were claimed by Skip Ackerman, who sank a long putt at #4 and stuck one close at #7; by James Hager and Phil Eyler with close to the pin shots, and by Derek Gilbertson and Joe Allen with long putts.  Team leaders John Walker and Skip Ackerman shot a net 67 on the day and lead Johnson and Walton by 19 points in the standings.  Tom Walker and Mike Bird are 23 points from the top and in third place.  Tom Walker's net 31 got him 105 points on the day and leaves him in 1st place in the Individual standings.  Jake Divine and Dan Jones also had 105 point efforts and are in second and third place in the standings, 12 and 66 points from the top.  At the three quarter mark in the Individual Handicapped Tournament, Tom Walker remains in first place with a score of 14 under par.  Gary LaMar is second at minus 11, and Kevin Byron and Mitch Jeffers are tied for third at nine under par.  In spite of all the birds, 34 of them in total, the group's average gross score went up a third of a stroke to 42.29.  For complete scores and standings, go here.

Tuesday Men's League Results Event 9 Posted

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Might have to play between the raindrops early but later looks ok.  Tom Walker (-10) and Phil Eyler (-8) lead the current tournament - Individual Handicapped, at the midpoint.  Tom also is on top in the standings - pretty gaudy stuff for a league newcomer.  Grounds are in excellent shape and the bugs are gone - for the most part - they did make a reappearance late yesterday afternoon.  Bring your Absorbine Jr or Skin so Soft or vanilla just to be on the safe side.

Community League Recap Event 2

Short Jeffers shot his second consecutive 34 to lead all scorers in the Community League's second event this past week.  The score gave him a net 31, a low he shared with Noah Callahan and Jeremy Graber.  Jeffers' low scores and fast start gave him the top positions in the League's Individual competition and also the lead at the midway point in the 36 hole Individual Handicapped Tournament at nine under par.  Noah Callahan, Adrain Graber, Jeremy Graber and Emanuel Wagler all share the second spot in the tournament with scores of minus seven.  In the league's team competition, the Emanuel Wagler-Adrian Graber duo again beat all competition with a net score of 65 and extended their lead at the top by six points with a total of 56.  Ken Wagler and Jeremy Graber slipped into second place with a 25 point effort this past week, shooting a net 66, while Stan Graber and Ryan Graber, who fired a net 69, remained in third place after scoring 22 points on the week.  They are 12 points behind the leaders.  The 30 players in the league had an average gross score of 43.63 for the week, just about a quarter stroke higher than week one's 43.40.

TMPL Event 8 Recap

Patty Bowling got back on track with a sterling round of 43 yesterday.  That gave her the low net round of the day, a minus eight.  She and Pam Byron, who also had a pretty good day with a seven under net round, combined for a net 57, the best team score of the day.  They squeezed by their opponents, Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon, by 5.5 to 3.5 on the holes, and a single stroke on the low total score.  The win gave them 10.5 points and drew them closer to Team competition leaders, Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson who lost their match to Frank and Susan Fee in a similar fashion: 4-5 on the holes, a single, thin stroke on the low score.  Pam's excellent round vaulted her into the lead in the 36 hole Individual Handicapped Tournament at minus 13 after 18 holes.  Jack Lents and Dick Lemmon, who also had pretty good rounds of net 30 and 29, are tied for second at 11 under par.  Jack and Dick also moved up to second and third in the Individual competition, 12 and 19 points behind Patty Bowling, who reclaimed the top spot with a 60 point day.  Low gross scores for the day were posted by Mike Bird and Junior Byron with rounds of 36.  Leroy Allbright claimed hole prizes at #7 with a close to the pin shot and then rolled in the longest putt of the day at #8 to take that prize as well.  Larry Sutton took the close to the pin shot at #9.  Average gross score for the group was 44.06, down another half stroke for the season.  Yes, the grounds are drying out and the ball is running; not yet August hard but getting close and a whole bunch more bounce then the wet and soggy conditions of April and May.

Bits and Pieces

-Enjoyed reading about the Blue Chip baseball records in the Loogootee Tribune this week.  Record for home runs (13) is held by Scott Wallace (Vic's son) who set it in 1988.  And the ERA record set by Dave Wininger back in 1983, one which is not going to be broken by anybody real soon: 0.00.  Neat stuff.  Go Boy Lions - this Saturday at 1pm down in Jasper.

-Putting Tips at about.com, including one from golflakeview:

Line, Pace, Point

Find the line, then get the pace right as you hit it through that point two to four inches in front of the ball.

-Here's just one of the others which might be worth a try, especially if there's a 3-6 stroke cut in my round:

Use a Quarter

Place a quarter on the back of your putter and try to swing without the coin sliding off. This took about 6 strokes off my game instantly.

—Guestned

-Of note: The Birdman went 36-33 for a total of 69 yesterday.  Second time he has shot his age with the first time being six years ago when he took 65 strokes to finish 18 holes, one stroke for each of his years.  Having the opportunity to play skins and flags after league this season has really helped by the simple fact of playing 18 holes on a regular basis.  Did warm up Wednesday night, playing nine holes with Tracy Rayhill and Tony Trambaugh.  Shot a 37 with a triple bogey at the last hole.  Funny how you sometimes just completely forget what you're doing out there.  Seems like anyway.  Didn't forget Thursday morning.

-I thought about heading over to Springfield and catching some of the LPGA action at the State Farm Classic.  Decided I didn't need all those hours on the road just before the Summerfest Scramble (btw, Stan Graber, give me a call, please!).  Michelle Wie had a pretty uneventful round yesterday - one birdie, one bogey.  She has a little work to do as the leader, Mindy Kim, is eight under.

-See if you can stay cool today.  Lots of water, some shade, maybe a movie with the wife while the sun is at its highest.  Can't say it's cooling down a whole bunch at night.  That doesn't help at all.  And, no, it's not too hot to play golf.  Just a little warm.

TMPL Results

This morning's league results are posted here.

The Birdman Caught

Todd Lancaster's photo of softball action at North Daviess last Saturday between Loogootee and Edinburg also caught a guy in a straw hat in the background.  That would be me, out and about also taking photos of the girls playing ball.  Thanks to Tracy Rayhill for bringing in a copy of the June 6th Washington Times Herald where the photo appeared with the story of the game.

Thursday Players, Come on Down!

Yep, still warm out there though the bugs seem to have left the area.  Fairways are dry and the ball is running.  Bring your A game and plan on having some fun.  Nine holes of league and nine holes of skins and flags for those interested (current handicaps with a maximum of nine).  See you all in just a bit.

Tom Walker capped off his best ever nine hole round of 38 with a birdie at #9.  His net score of 29 earned him 120 points for his day's work and vaulted him into first place in the Individual competition in the Tuesday Men's League.  His 643 points leads Jake Divine by 12 points and Brandon Inman by 27.  Low net score for the day was earned by Curt Johnson whose own 38 gave him a net of 24.  Curt has a new driver which is giving him an additional 25-35 yards off the tee, a fact no doubt helping him go much lower in his game.  Low gross honors go to Short Jeffers and Mark Potts who both shot 33's.  Curt and Tyler Walton's net 59 for team net nipped Chad Wade and Travis Brett's 60.  Travis, filling in for Don Nolan, had a very good round of his own, shooting a 35 gross and a net 27.  Charlie Lyon led the hole prize winners with close to the pin shots at both #7 and #9; Kent Summers got the third par 3 prize at #3.  Nick Wininger, Tom McAtee and James Hager sank long putts to claim additional hole prizes.  John Walker and Skip Ackerman, with a net 69 and 28 points for their day's work, remain on top of the Team competition.  Jake Divine and Brandon Inman are three back with TJ McAtee and Alan Burch seventeen back.  After 18 holes in the 36 hole Individual Handicapped Tournament, Tom Walker's ten under par tops the scoreboard.  Phil Eyler is two back while Noah Callahan and Mitch Jeffers are three back.  Average gross score for the group fell another half stroke, coming in at 41.97 for the day.

Time Change: Summerfest Annual Golf Scramble June 11th

The Summerfest Scramble this Saturday has been moved to an 8am start time (from 9am) because of the Loogootee boys' baseball semi state ball game later that day in Jasper.  If you haven't signed up yet, call the clubhouse with your team or to sign up as a single.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Good weather today along with dry fairways.  Should lead to some running of the ball and easier approach shots.  Lower scores, right?  And then the rust from the long winter and wet spring should all be gone.  More reason to expect lower scores today.  Bugs?  Still a few of them around but the skin so soft or the absorbine jr is pretty effective.  Best come out and have fun with the crooked sticks and the little balls.  And, yes, come hydrated and stay hydrated.

Bits and Pieces

-Busy times with the three leagues now well started at Lakeview.  The Community League finished up its first week Saturday.

-Summerfest Scramble coming up this Saturday starting at 9am.  Sign up sheet is in the clubhouse and individuals are welcome to put their names down - already have several on the list.  All players are welcome.

-Some pretty good golfing last week at Lakeview especially Mark Potts' three eagles in nine holes on Tuesday.  That's just not done every other week in any neck of the woods.  He's still looking for a score in the 20's; expect he'll have if before the summer is over.

-Jake Divine also had a super week with his best ever (so far) round of 34 last Tuesday and then an ace on Friday.  He was looking to cap it off with a scramble win on Saturday morning but that didn't work out so well.  A week to remember nonetheless.

-Went up to the Loogootee girls' softball game Saturday afternoon.  Been a while since I last saw girls play softball - maybe 25 years; so I was very impressed by the athleticism displayed out there on the field.  Gotta love what Title IX did for women all over these United States.  Too bad the Lions didn't advance, falling to Edinburg, 4-2.  The boy Lions did win their two games and do advance to the semistate.

-Outta here - to town and then to the golf course.

Community League Recap Event 1

New members to Lakeview's Community League quickly made their mark this past week as the summer league had their initial event of the season.  Emanuel Wagler and Adrian Graber shot a low team net of 61 to take the lead in the team standings with a total of 28 points.  Short and Shirley Jeffers, experienced Community League members, shot a net 67 to take second place in a competition that includes fifteen teams this year.  Emanuel Wagler and Short Jeffers lead the individual standings as each shot net 30's on the week.  Adrian Graber and Rob Graber are tied for third after shooting net 31's.  The low gross score for the week goes to Short Jeffers who came in with a one under par 34.  Ken Wagler was second with a 37.  This past week was also the first week of the four week Individual Handicapped Tournament for the league with Jeffers and Wagler taking the early lead.  Average gross score for the 30 players in the league was 43.40.

Jeffers, Souerdike, Allen and Byron Win Saturday Scramble

With the addition of Spenser Souerdike and three birdies, it was May 14th all over again.  Short Jeffers, Joe Allen and Kevin Byron, along with Spenser, teamed up to storm the gates and walk away with the scramble trophy at Lakeview yesterday.  Three weeks ago, on May 14th, the three won with a score of 31; this time, using the same tactics - solid golf without any individual heroics, they shot a 28 and bested their nearest competitors by two strokes.  Dave Wininger, Mike Bird, Mike Arvin and Bryant Trambaugh were second with a score of 30, while Terry Butcher, Wayne Souerdike, Terry LaMar and Mike McLaughlin had the third best round with a 33.  Two other teams were in the hunt: Stan Graber, Jake Divine, Larry Hembree and Curt Johnson fired an even par round of 30.  Trenton Kidwell, Weston Muessig and Trey Kidwell were the players on the fifth team in the competition.

The Wilde Man Back in Town

Ron Wilde, former Shoals resident and Lakeview golfing fanatic, is back in town for the weekend and stopped in at Lakeview for 18 holes with some of his golfing buddies.  Junior Byron, Jack Lents and myself joined Ron for a game of six, six and six Friday morning.  Ron fired a low 72 for the 18 holes showing us that he has maintained his golfing skills over in Missouri where he lives with wife Pam in Tom Sawyer's backyard.  Photo shows Ron hitting into #7.

Friday Golfers: Tim Sanders and Chris Jones

Tim Sanders, doing the pencil work, and Chris Jones were among the several Community League teams to show up at Lakeview late Friday afternoon and evening.  The players were getting in their first regular season event of the Community League after the successful completion of the two preseason scrambles. The League currently has fifteen teams registered for its summer play which runs through the week of August 21st.

Jake Divine Gets His Third Ace

Former Loogootee High School golfer Jake Divine got his third ace in his young golfing career on Friday.  Playing at Lakeview Golf Course, Jake used his Titleist gap wedge to hit his NXT Extreme golf ball 115 yards at hole #7.  The ball landed right of the green and pin, caromed off of a hillock and rolled towards and then into the cup.  The hole-in-one was the third for Jake who also has aces at Eagle View and Country Oaks.

Thursday Match Play League Event 7 Recap

Dick Barber led all players in the Thursday League at Lakeview with a net score of seven under par 28 in yesterday's play.  That gives him the top spot in the opening round of the Individual Handicapped Tournament.  Jack Lents and Pam Byron each had rounds of minus six to tie for second.  Dave Brown, JD Faris, Rex Hudson, Terry LaMar and Richard Lemmon are in a tie for fourth at minus five.  Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson strengthened their hold on first place with an 11.5 to 2.5 win in their match against subs Dave Strange and Ben Course.  Patty Bowling and Pam Byron stayed close with a 9-5 win over Mike McLaughlin and Leroy Allbright.  Low scores for the day were posted by Frank Fee, Al Kavanaugh and Mike Bird for low gross with 37's, by the aforementioned Dick Barber for his net 28, and by Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon for the team low of 60.  Hole prizes were claimed by Susan Fee and Morris Cornelius with close to the pin shots, and by Junior Byron with the long putt at #8.  Average gross score for the day was 44.72, down by more than a stroke from last week's 46.

Of note:  Five players stayed for the skins and flags game following league play.  Mike McLaughlin, Phil Hardwick and Mike Bird each had two birds during the game.  Not bad when you compare that with the total of nine birds claimed earlier in the day by the 29 players in league action.  Reminiscent of all the eagles being picked up last Tuesday by the Tuesday Men: three by Mark Potts, one each by Tyler Walton and Dave Wininger.  Nice to have the warmer and dryer weather, right?

Thursday Match Play League Today at 9

We've got lovely weather and a lovely place to play golf where scores are going down, down, down.  Come on out and enjoy the company of your competitors and fire a low round of your own.  The 36 hole, four week Individual Handicapped Tournament starts today.  Susan Fee is the returning champion - she won last year's event with a score of 12 under par; Jim Bateman and Pam Byron tied for second at 9 under par.

On the two home teams:  I have two subs coming in to cover the four spots.  If you have a pal who wants to come down and play with us this morning, bring him or her along.  We could use two more subs.

See you all in a bit.

Pam and Junior Byron Win May Challenge

Pam and Junior Byron completed Lakeview's May Challenge with a net score of 155.67, 20.33 strokes from par, to win the initial running of the four game event.  The two had the low net score in the alternate shot portion of the tournament and placed second in the best ball and scramble portions.  Second place in the tournament was claimed by Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon with a score 155.67, same as the winners but 19.33 strokes from par with the one stroke difference in the par scores for men and women.  Low net scores for the individual events were: Phil Roberts' and Vic Wallace's 29 in the best ball; Virgil Harper's and Gary LaMar's 25.67 in the scramble; the Byron's 30.33 in the alternate shot; and a four way tie at 63 for the individual stroke - Brown and Lemon, Jack Lents and Mike Bird, Tom Walker and Mike Bird, and Skip Ackerman and John Walker.  Comnplete scores here.
