September Challenge Update
Update after this morning's play here. Seven teams still needing to complete their best ball rounds.
Bits and Pieces
-Several members of the Thursday Match Play League will be out this morning at 9am to finish up their September Challenge.
-Gotta love the fact that Furyk won big with a $39 used putter. Don't expect there will be any great rush by those with money to downsize their choice of golfing or sporting equipment.
-Did you catch Ken Burns' 10th Inning on PBS these last two nights? If you're a baseball fan, you will probably want to catch it at some point. Even if you're not a baseball fan.
-Heading out - got a golf date at nine with Jack Lents - see if we can match some of those good scores posted in the Challenge last night. Actually, I'm looking for a magical net 23 - haven't told Jack yet - he'll have to be getting a bunch of birdies. I'll be looking for eagles (they are around!) and aces.

Bits and Pieces
-Notre Dame who? Jeesh.
-Colts look good though I watched the rest of the fireworks down in Atlanta - Jim Furyk and his 'how-to-make-it-a-very-exciting' finish for the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup. That's the way it should be, right? The guy winning on Sunday taking home both of the trophies.
-John Drake and Tom McAtee came out and finished up their September Challenge with a Best Ball game yesterday afternoon. I went out with them to witness. Guess who had his best game of the year? JD shot a 38 which included a chip in for birdie at #3 which gave the team a net score of zero on the hole. John took care of seven of the holes with Tom cleaning up the rest as the two of them shot a more than brilliant net 23. Got to get a calculator and a computer to try and figure out a way for Jack Lents and I, or any of the other 28 teams in the Challenge, to match that and then do one or more better. Btw, did I say super round, John? Was, indeed.
-Up earlier than usual today - got to start the golf course as Eric takes #1 son to the doctor this morning. Lucas got his bells rung last night in a JV football game up in Odon - coming around on a sweep when he met two of the opposing players in a head-to-head, two-helmets-to-one-helmet collision. He knocked them back on their butts but then crumpled to the ground. Disappeared into la-la land for a while. Scary moments for dad Eric standing right there and then swelling in Lucas' arm, etc. Not nice.
-So I see that NBC is going to tape delay Saturday's Ryder Cup action (espn has coverage on Friday - live; and NBC will do live on Sunday). You going to not check the scoring on your computer? And if you do check, are you going to watch the tape delayed stuff on NBC?
-Heading out to the gc. Gonna be another absolutely lovely day for golf. Better put your sticks in the car and drop by after work.

With eighteen holes in the books and nine yet to play, the leaders in Lakeview's post season September Challenge are Tom McAtee and John Drake. The two have an 18 hole score of 59.67. In second place is the team of Mike Bird and Jack Lents at an even 60. Billy Trabant and Duane Wagler sit in third with a 62 for their 18 holes. Low gross scores for the Alternate Shot game played this last week were turned in by Trenton Kidwell and Tyler Kidwell, and Ken Wagler and Jeremy Graber, each team with one under 34's. Three teams tied for the low net score of 31.33: Ken Wagler and Jeremy Graber, Tom McAtee and John Drake, and Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon.
The thirty teams in the competition will play Best Ball in the third and final round this week.
Jack Nickless joined up with Mark and Greg Potts and shot a nine hole round of five under to win the Saturday Morning Scramble out at Lakeview yesterday. Three other teams competed with scores ranging from one under to four under on a day when the birdies and eagles were hard to come by.

September Challenge Update
Corrected Junior Byron's handicap from a +1 to a -1. Moved him and Wayne up a notch in the standings here. (That was my mistake - I was so intent on getting our two plus handicappers right - Dave Wininger is the other one - that I got one wrong. My bad.)

September Challenge Update
All of today's play has been recorded here. Four teams still need to play their alternate shot games. Note: Because of the medical emergency which sidelined Clyde Wake, Terry LaMar has been granted permission to find a substitute for the final two games of the Challenge.

Duane Wagler and Billy Trabant
Billy making solid contact with his ball at #7 tee box late this afternoon. The two September Challenge contenders did fairly well with their Alternate Shot round, posting a 36.
Clyde Wake Update
Thanks to Karry Stoll for keeping us up to date on what's happening in Clyde's life. His latest comment:
Note to Clyde: We all care, Clyde. Relax and get your body back in shape.
Karry Stoll has left a new comment on your post "Clyde Wake":
Clyde update: Clyde is out of the hospital, and staying at his sisters house in Jasper. He is not allowed to lift anything over five pounds, which means his cat! The doctors comments to Clyde were as follows. No bowling, golf, lifting, and even preaching. Clydes comments to me were "I might as well be dead".
He will be done with everything for four weeks. The blood on his brain was a concern, and needs to be monitered for at least that long to make sure that it doesnt increase in size.
Another one of his comments that was the typical Clyde that I know was this. "I've been in that hospital for one night, and one day. And the only thing I missed was my cat".
I'm making light of the situation, but Clyde does need our prayers. So when your teeing off on one, two, three, or whatever hole think of yours and my friend Clyde.
Note to Clyde: We all care, Clyde. Relax and get your body back in shape.

Bits and Pieces
-Hope Clyde Wake is feeling better and will be back soon.
-September Challenge results are updated through play last night. Mike Kidwell and I went out with Mike's boys, Trenton and Tyler. Was hoping we would do well enough to make a move away from the bottom of the pack. Not so sure we did with a very disappointing 37 gross, 36 net and a total 71 for the tournament. Mike did roll in a twenty foot birdie putt at the last to give us something to cheer about for the next seven days.
-Did get to the volleyball game last night - arriving at the end of game 2 - Lions up 2; Hatchets won the third and then the Lions closed it out with a win in the fourth game. Posted some of the photos I took (here).
-Rain today? Looks like it is all going to slip by to the north of us. Was surprised by the splash of thunder and rain we had last night - about 1? Guess we'll get our share of showers one of these days...

Mike Anderson's East-West Challenge at Lakeview
The second half of Mike Anderson's East-West Challenge was played at Lakeview yesterday morning. The Easties 'evened' the score with a narrow 16.5 to 15.5 vistory. The teams of Dave Brown and Tony Wease, and Virgil Harper, Ray Shaw and Charlie Sheetz led the way with wins in both the Best Ball and the Scramble portions of the game.

Clyde Wake
In case you missed Karry's comment in Bits and Pieces:
Just wanted everyone to know that Clyde Wake was taken to St Marys Hospital in Evansville last night. He took a tumble today and hit his head. Went to the doctor, and was brought home with a slight fever. My dad called me and wanted me to check on him since he is my neighbor. At which time his daughter came, and it was determined that he needed to go back to the hospital. Which I might add he wanted nothing to do with.
Anyway long story short. Keep Clyde in your thoughts and prayers.
Sorry, he was taken to the hospital tonight the 21st.
And will be there at least tonight, if not longer. His daughter called me again, and he has slight bleeding on the brain. He is being held for observation.
Just to let you all know he is in good spirits. The reason I know this is because he wanted me to be sure and take care of his cat.

Bits and Pieces
-The other half of Mike Anderson's East-West Challenge takes place at Lakeview this morning. You remember that we played the first half over at the Oaks last Tuesday with the East squad being pummalled by the West squad, 26-6 (scoring: 8 matches, game on each nine; one point for each game, one point for each nine hole low gross score). Pay back time at Lakeview today. Starts at nine o'clock with the first nine being a Best Ball game and the second nine a Scramble.
-A little birdie told me that the winning score at last Saturday's SM Scramble, the 28 posted by Mike Seals, Mike Arvin and Lee Wininger, included a chip in for eagle at #6 by Mike Seals.
-Three more teams played their Alternate Shot for the September Challenge last night: Wininger and Stoll, Jeffers and Arthur, Seals and Toy. That makes four to date for the middle game in the three game event. Will update the scoreboard after tonight's play.
-Hannah and Lion volleyball tonight. Playing Washington. Looking forward to it, or whatever part I can catch after closing up the gc.
Suggestion for the day: Go for it, whatever it is you are doing. (Did you ever wonder what 'it' is? A win, the gold or brass ring, the shining light, sweetness, good honest effort, commitment, wonder and joy?)

News Article for the Week of September 19
For the week of September 19, 2010
Lakeview Golf Course News
by Michael Bird, Lakeview Golf Course Manager
Mike Seals, Mike Arvin and Lee Wininger shot a nifty seven under par round of 28 to win the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview yesterday. Lee Wininger rolled in a twenty foot putt on the team's last hole, number one, for what turned out to be the decisive shot in a one stroke win over the teams of Tyler Kidwell, Wayne Souerdike, Stan Graber and Bric Parker, and Mike Bird, Greg Potts and Tracy Rayhill.
Mike Arvin and Noah Callahan shot a 31 gross and a 26.67 net to take the early lead in Lakeview's September Challenge. Thirty teams completed the scramble, the first of three games in the inter league Challenge, with the Arvin/Callahan team, from the Tuesday Men's League, up by a stroke on Paul Hart and Kent Summers. Jack Lents and Mike Bird, low team from the Thursday Match Play League, are in third place with a net score of 28; they tied Arvin and Callahan for the low gross of the week, a 31. In fourth place is the team of Tom McAtee and John Drake with a score of 28.33. Tied for fifth are Kevin Byron and Junior Byron, and Jack Nickless and Wayne Souerdike, with scores of 28.67. Dennis Brosmer and Tom Trambaugh fired a net 29 for seventh place in the standings. Clint Knepp and Rob Graber, low team from the Community League, are tied for eighth place with Colin Padgett and Terry Padgett, each coming in with scores of 29.33. The competitors head into the second week of the Challenge, an alternate shot game, before finishing up in week three with a best ball game. Complete results can be found online at golflakeview.com.

Arvin and Callahan Take Early Lead in Lakeview's September Challenge
Bits and Pieces
-Colts looked good last night and win big, too! The Manning Bowl turned out to be a blowout.
-Irish look good on Saturday, at least the offense. Too bad they had to lose on a trick play. Expect somebody missed an assignment. New coach starts his first season one and two. Not exactly what us Domers were looking for...
-Learned from Wayne Souerdike that his team, as well as the one I played on, birdied the last two holes last Saturday morning to get to six under in the SM Scramble. Tracy Rayhill did the honors for our team (Greg Potts was the third player) when he rolled in two lengthy putts at #8 and #9. Of course, the one that mattered was the twenty footer by Lee Wininger to get his team to seven under on their last hole (they parred their second-to-last hole).
-September Challenge enters its second week. Here's the by League breakdown:
-Tuesday Men's League: 14 teams
-Thursday Match Play League: 10 teams
-Community League: 6 teams
The sixty players try their luck at alternate shot this week. The leaders after week one, Mike Arvin and Noah Callahan, came out and got their round in yesterday.
-Learned from Hannah that the Lion volleyball team plays Washington and Barr Reeve this week. Just might be able to get to one or both of them what with the dark closing in on us a little bit earlier every day.
-Plenty of light right now - good time to head to the golf course - for a walk and to see what the herons are doing - got at least three of them chasing each other out there.

September Challenge Update: Scramble Results
Results for the first week of the Challenge are posted here. Mike Arvin and Noah Callahan, with a net 26.67, lead the 30 team field. Paul Hart and Kent Summers are one stroke back with Mike Bird and Jack Lents in third at an even 28.
September Challenge Update
Added two more teams to the roster bringing our total to thirty. Expect to post the scramble scores later today.
Week 2 of the Challenge starts today. The game is Alternate Shot. A few notes:
-Women tee off at #1 from the 175 yard line.
-Both players hit tee shots from each tee and then alternate from there on in to the cup.
-Make all putts - no gimme's.

In the mix - 28 teams. And we have one golfer looking for a partner - call the clubhouse if you are also looking for a partner.

September Challenge Update
After this morning's Thursday Leaguers signed up and played their scramble, the September Challenge is up to 27 teams. The information sheet and the current roster can be found here. Scores of the scramble will be posted after all the teams have played. League players and League subs have until Saturday evening of this week to register and get their scramble in.
Trials and Tribulations at the Golf Course
Curt Johnson and Tony Trambaugh using body english to try and get their ball to drop into the hole at #4. You can see it just finishing up its tour around the cup's edge. Once it had decided to stay out of the hole, Tracy Rayhill went into one of his 'dance-of-joy' routines and was given a 15 yard penalty (to be assessed on #5 tee box) for excessive celebration. Bric Parker's in the red and is quite content to let things happen as they are supposed to happen.
Bits and Pieces
-Thursday Leaguers have the chance to sign up and play in the September Scramble at 9 this morning. Several are already on the roster and coming out to play. No partner yet? Call the clubhouse and let us know, maybe even show up today at 8:30.
-The September Challenge has 23 teams signed up - still growing!
-Two pick-up 2 person scrambles last night at Lakeview: Tracy Rayhill and Bric Parker took Curt Johnson and Tony Trambaugh to the cleaners winning by four; and Randy Graber and I beat up on Duane Wagler and Billy Trabant but just by a little bit: two strokes with one of them coming as darkness fell all around us.
-Weather: They have changed the forecast in the last hour from thunderstorms today to partly cloudy with a high of 84. Sounds and looks about right and should make for a very pleasant day at the golf course. We like that. Yes, I know we desperately need the rain. How about tonight?

Dave Strange Heading for #7 Teeing Area
Haven't seen much of Dave out at the golf course this year - he's been tending to a neck problem for a while. But that seems to be under control and he hopes to play more golf. That's good news. Photo taken this last Monday morning.
September Challenge Update
Eighteen teams signed up to date. Looking for more. Contact the clubhouse if you want to play but don't have a partner. Note: The first part of the Challenge, the scramble, is underway and half the teams have already turned in their scores. Remember, you can play anytime during the week, Sunday through Saturday. Eligible players are any 2010 League player or substitute.

Mike Anderson's East-West Challenge Scoreboard
The East guys got spanked over at the Oaks. Expect we will do better on our home turf. The scoring:
-one point for each of the two 9 hole games (two ball and alternating shot) per match
-one point for each nine hole low gross score per match.
-one point for each of the two 9 hole games (two ball and alternating shot) per match
-one point for each nine hole low gross score per match.
The September Challenge is Underway!
John Drake and Tom McAtee kicked it off when they scrambled yesterday morning. Expect we'll see a few more golfers today.
Here's the link and I do have a few notes and things to emphasize:
-you may partner up with any 2010 league player or sub and that player is your partner for the three events.
-you may play any time during the week.
-Ladies will tee off at the 175 yard line on hole #1 during the scramble and the alternate shot portions of the challenge. That makes it a par 4.
Should be a challenge for everybody and fun to boot.

Octogenerarians Bill and Norma Harp
A couple of golfers who have been at the game for a long time, Bill and Norma Harp returned to Lakeview this morning. They choose to bypass all those way-too-warm summer days of the past few months. Good to see them once again out smacking a little white ball around - here chipping onto the green at #6.
Star Loogootee Cross Country Runner
Katie Wagler getting ready to start a training run out at Boggs after school this afternoon. I just happened to be passing by with my camera...
Jon, Tom, Lon and Maelee Playing Golf
That would be Taylor, Trambaugh, Hawkins and Hawkins out at Lakeview yesterday. Note Maelee's good left arm position on the back swing - nice and straight.
