Wagler and Graber Win Week 2 Scramble, Tie Jeffers and Jeffers for Low 18

Emanuel Wagler and Adrian Graber shot a net 27.67 to win the Community League's second preseason scramble.  The win also enabled them to tie Short Jeffers and Shirley Jeffers for the low 18 hole score of 58.33.  Complete scores here.

Bits and Pieces

-Got an oopsie:  Forgot about getting news in early this week because of Memorial Day.  No Lakeview Golf Course News article in the Tribune this week.  Dang on me...

-Did see the 'exciting' conclusion to the Indy 500 yesterday.  Too bad for the youngster.  Haven't seen much on his explanation (haven't looked).  Rookie error?  Mental lapse?

-Also saw the extra hole at the Byron Nelson tournament.  Some nerves showing up there as well as both players hit their tee shots on the extra hole way off line.  Nice scrambling by Keegan Bradley to get his par; not so nice scrambling by Ryan Palmer with the dunk into the water of his second shot.  Guess you noticed that Ryuji Imada really made a mess of his last two holes (he bogeyed them), keeping him from winning the tournament outright.

-Out at Lakeview, the Community League finished up its 2nd preseason scramble yesterday.  Emmanuel Wagler and Adrian Graber had the low score with a net 27.67.  That score enabled them to tie Short and Shirley Jeffers for the 18 hole low score of 58.33.  Wagler and Graber tied Ken Wagler and Jeremy Graber in shooting the low gross for the week, each coming in with a 33.  This week starts the regular season for the Community League.

-Some suggestions for golfers whose games are slow to rounding into shape this season:  Go out and play as if you know what you're doing; maybe something will click somewhere along the line.  Play more; that elusive rhythm has to be there somewhere.  Don't give up on your clubs - they're the same ones that were hitting all those super shots last year.  Spend some time with your mechanics - putting comes to mind - are you really swinging the short stick like you mean to?  I have a terrible tendency to go outside in with my putting stroke; definitely believe that my own putting problem is mechanics.  Well, that confidence thingee, too.  But that's why it's important to go out there and play as if you know what you're doing.  Right?  In any case, keep at it.  It's bound to get better.

-And for all of you already in the groove, keep it going, the rest of us are going to get there eventually.

-I was down at Jim Bateman's granddaughter's wedding (Perry Bateman and James Weber) Saturday evening - on the Town Square in French Lick.  Took lots of photos, saw lots of golfers.  Photo: Jim with two of his other granddaughters, Emily and Erin.  Nice escorts, Jim.

Stan Graber and Greg Potts Win Scramble at Lakeview

Three of the six two man teams playing in the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview finished their rounds at two under par.  Stan Graber and Greg Potts won on a tie breaking card draw.  Mike Bird and Larry Hembree along with Dave Wininger and Kevin Byron were the other teams shooting minus 2 rounds.  Wayne Souerdike and son Spencer fired a 34 to miss the card draw by a single stroke.  James Hager and Paul Hart finished at even par while Mike Kidwell and Joe Allen, former team champions in Lakeview league play, struggled with their round, finishing several strokes behind the leaders.

TMPL Event 6 Recap

Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson took on Virgil Harper and Gary LaMar in Thursday's Match Play League, shot a three under net 67 and won the match, 10.5 points to 3.5 points.  The victory propelled them to a one stroke victory in the 36 Team Handicapped Tournament and into first place in the standings for the regular season.  In the tournament, they slipped by last week's leaders, Vic Wallace and Phil Roberts, who had a disappointing net 75 on the day, to tumble to fourth place.  Jack Lents and Mike Bird, with a net 63, fell one shot shy of the winning score to take second place and also beat up on their match play opponents, Pam Byron and Patty Bowling, 11.5 to 2.5.  The day's low scores belonged to JD Faris and Kenny Hudson with a super net team 59, sparked by JD's low net individual score of 26.  Junior Byron again came in with the low gross score, a 37.  Hole prizes were won by Kenny Hudson at #7, John Chapman at #8 and Dick Barber at #9.  Jack Butcher also took over the #1 spot in the individual standings, passing Patty Bowling who fell to second.  Junior Byron and John Chapman are tied for third while Frank Fee is in fifth position after six events.

TMPL Results

The Thursday League's results are posted here.  Congrats to Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson on their Team Tournament victory.  Their 36 hole net score was minus 8.  Jack Lents and Mike Bird finished second at minus 7 while Dave Brown and Dick Lemmon finished third at minus 5.

Gary LaMar, Jack Lents, Virgil Harper and Terry LaMar Finishing Up at #9

Photo from play last Tuesday.

Community League Scramblers' Jeremy Graber and Ken Wagler

The two were out yesterday playing the second of two preseason scrambles in the Community League.  Here they are out at #7.  Tyson Stoll, Rich Graber, Clint Knepp and Rob Graber finished up their scrambling just before Ken and Jeremy teed off at #1.

Thursday Match Play League Today at 9

Looking for the rain to go around us as it did yesterday (during the day - we did get hammered about ten last night).  Bring a raincoat just in case we get a sprinlke while we're out there on the course.  Coming up today is the fourth and final nine holes of the Team Handicapped Tournament and, for those playing in the May Challenge, the individual stroke portion of the game (both net scores count for the team score).  Current leaders in the Team Tournament: Vic Wallace and Phil Roberts at -9.  Rex Hudson and Jack Butcher sit in 2nd place at -5.  The bug situation:  They are still around and are heavier around the bushes and trees.  I've been using Avon's Skin so Soft the last several days and it has been very effective.  We have both Skin so Soft and Vanilla sprays at the clubhouse.

Bring your A game; look for a low score - actually, just make a good swing every time you get a chance; expect to have fun.

Tuesday Men's League Event 6 Recap

John Walker's round of 35 gave him low net honors for the day, a sterling 27.  It also propelled him and his partner, Skip Ackerman to a two stroke victory in the 36 hole Team Tournament.  Their 15 under par score bested Danny Jones and Lonnie Hawkins who came up just a bit short with their low net team round of the day, a ten under 60.  Finishing third in the tournament with a score of minus 11 was the team of TJ McAtee and Alan Burch.  James Hager had the low gross score for the day, a 34.  Hole prizes were claimed by Chad Wade, Jon Boyd and Mitch Jeffers with close to the pin shots; and by Mike Seals, Lonnie Hawkins and John Drake with long putts.  Walker and Ackerman remain on top of the team standings with 297 points after six events.  Jake Divine and Brandon Inman are in second with 274 points while James Hager and Ryan Johnson sit in third with 256 points.  In the individual competition, Danny Jones jumped into first place after shooting a 38 on the day; that gave him a net 31 and 92 points for his efforts.  His 513 points is five better than Jake Divine's second place total of 505.  Jordan Divine, Skip Ackerman and John Walker round out the top five.  Average score for the Tuesday Men players was 42.98, down from 43.57 of a week ago and the best of the year so far.

Yesterday's Youngest Visitor at Lakeview

Sophia Toy was out with her parents, Nick and Jaime, during the noon hour yesterday.  Nick was getting in his Tuesday Men's League round.

Tuesday Men's League Results

Today's results are posted here.  Congrats to John Walker and Skip Ackerman on their 1st place finish in the Team Handicapped Tournament.  They finished the 36 hole tournament at -15, two strokes better than the team of Dan Jones and Lonnie Hawkins.  Hats off to John for his sterling round of 35 today, a score which gave him the low net honors at 27 and contributed mightily to the team score of 63, seven under par.

Bits and Pieces

-Tuesday Men's League have another day of clouds and possible rain.  Let's see if we can successfully dodge the raindrops again today.  On the agenda:
-4th and final nine holes of the Team Handicapped Tournament.  John Walker and Skip Ackerman currently have the lead at minus 8 but several teams remain within striking distance.
-2nd week of the May Challenge.  Participants have to get in their scramble from the first week and then tackle individual stroke play today (both net scores count as team score).  The fourth part of the game, alternate shot, must be completed by next Tuesday.
-Event 6 with 6 hole prizes.

-We got a quick 3/4's of an inch late yesterday afternoon that sent several of us running for cover.

-Lousy golfer joke from Frank Fee:
I told my friend ...

This morning I waded across a raging river, escaped from a bear in the woods,
marched up and down a mountain, stood in a patch of poison ivy, crawled out
of quicksand, and climbed up an enormous tree! ...

My friend said, " You must be some outdoorsman!"

"No," I replied, "I'm just a lousy golfer."
Hmmm.  We've got rising water, wild geese attacking from every which way, ticks, poison ivy but no enormous trees.  And, I expect, each of us has had issues with each of them.  But, please, the appropriate label is good golfer gone a bit astray.  Right?

-Golf tip for the day:  On the approach shot:  Make a good decision on club choice, commit to your swing, execute with a rhythmic movement that hits the ball squarely.  Simple, right?  Now stop thinking about and just do it.

Bits and Pieces

-Michelle Wie's exit from Sybase - photo and brief recap of her Saturday morning efforts (she described her play as horrible) here.  The event was won by Suzann Petersen who topped Cristie Kerr in the final match with a 15 foot birdie putt at the 18th hole.

-David Toms has a roller coaster ride for a big win at the Colonial.  Pretty impressive Sunday after he shot himself in the foot, over and over again, on Saturday, blowing a seven stroke lead and eventually winning by one stroke over Charlie Wi.  Good stuff for one of the older stars on the Men's tour.  Another one of those weeks where the 20 somethings again had to sit in the back seat.  Dang...

-Speaking of older stars:  Tiger Woods slipped out of the top ten in the world rankings for the first time since forever.  More and more it looks like the Tiger era has passed.  Too bad - it was a lot of fun while it lasted.

-Several teams came out and registered for the Community League and then went out and played the first of two preseason scrambles over the weekend.  We do have a winner of that scramble:  Short and Shirley Jeffers who came out last night after dinner and whizzed around the course, posting a 35 gross and a net 27.67.  This week's winner?  Btw, my partner for the Community League, Larry Wininger, is not going to be around this week so if your partner is also indisposed, I'ld be happy to team up with you in the second preseason scramble.

-Had some Tuesday Men and Thursday Match Play golfers also out over the weekend getting in their scramble as part of the May Challenge.  Jack Lents and I did just that late Saturday afternoon, firing a 34 and leaving two strokes on the table along the way (missed a couple of short putts - always hate to do that).

-Working on my golf game.  Glad to report it is coming around.  Lots of time practicing putting, chipping and approach shots.  On the approach shots, have recalibrated my wedge distances.  You remember I buy into the Pelz approach to the short game, using quarter, half and three quarter swings to dial in on different yardages.  Committing to a particular swing has also made a difference.  One other thing: Finding I need more time to limber up.  No longer am I able to leave the clubhouse and drop right into a well oiled swing.  At least that's the case for now.

-Time to get out of here.  Golf course, Donut Barn, Bloomington.  Stuff to do.  Places to go.  People to see.  Photos to take.

Jeffers and Jeffers Win Community League Preseason Scramble #1

Short and Shirley Jeffers fired a even par 35 and posted a net score of 27.67 to win the first of two Community League preseason scrambles.  With a net score of 29.33, Clint Knepp and Rob Graber finished second in the event that saw eight of the league's teams come out and get their season started.  Three teams shot 34's to share low gross honors.  They were Clint Knepp and Rob Graber, Noah Miller and Galen Lengacher and Jeremy Graber and Ken Wagler.  The second scramble will be played this week before the opening of the season the week of May 29th.

Kidwell, Potts and Hembree Triumph at Lakeview

Photo: Trenton Kidwell chipping onto #9 at Lakeview Golf Course enroute to a victory in the Saturday Morning Scramble.  Teammates Greg Potts and Larry Hembree are in the background.     Photo by Mike Bird.

Larry Hembree sank an across the green putt at #3 and chipped in an off the green shot at #7 to provide the difference in the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview.  Hembree, Trenton Kidwell and Greg Potts teamed up to shoot a six under 29 to defeat two other teams who finished the day two strokes back with scores of 31.  Trenton Kidwell started the team off on the right foot by smashing his drive some 300 yards to just off the green at #1 which lead to their first sub par round of the day.  The threesome went on to birdie the next three holes and added addition birds at six and seven to go along with pars at five, eight and nine.  Dave Wininger, Mike Bird, Lee Wininger and Kevin Byron made up one of the teams coming in at 31.  James Hager, Spencer Souerdike, Gabby Love and Joe Allen comprised the second.

Saturday Scramble Start Time

9am - rain or shine.  Come prepared for the bugs - feeding the birds this morning, they were all over me.  Think maybe they are getting in their last few bites before heading off to lala land for another year.

Bits and Pieces

-From the Sybase Match Play Tournament now going in Gladstone, NJ.  On match play golf:
“It’s match play, you never know what you’re going to get,” No. 15 seed Brittany Lincicome said. “If you’re not on the top of your game every day, you’re not going to keep going. Or, you could play crappy every day and keep going.”
I like that though being on top of your game is probably a huge plus.  Michelle Wie did win her match yesterday (over Beatriz Recari) and plays Anna Nordqvist today.

-After yesterday's league play, eleven players stuck around and played another round or two.  Vic Wallace and Phil Roberts (the one who played more than one addition round as Preston joined him for yet another nine holes) did the scramble portion of the May Challenge; the Boys (Butcher, Lemmon, Lents and Hudson) played  their usual game of 3-3-3; and Tony Wease, Phil Hardwick, Mike McLaughlin, John Holtz and myself played skins and flags.  Good stuff on a Thursday morning.

-Congrats to Junior Byron and Patty Bowling.  Junior shot his second straight 35 in Thursday League while Patty continues her stellar early season play.  Patty's beginning handicap in April was 20; she has reduced that to 13 going into next week's play.  Pretty impressive stuff.

-Tom Walker, my Tuesday Men's League partner, came out and subbed for Bob Elliott yesterday and shot a super 40.  I look for him to get into the 30's in short order.  Hope I can join him there - my game has taken a long and tortuous path in getting back to end of 2010 levels.  I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

-Saturday Morning Scramble tomorrow at 9am.

-Tip for the day:  Do like Ernie Banks suggested and play two today.  That would be two nine hole games for me.  Play the first one at 1 with Tom Walker - the scramble portion of our Tuesday League May Challenge.  Another nine later on as evening approaches.

Tuesday Men's League Event 5 Recap

In Men's League action last Tuesday, Mark Potts shot a round of 34 to claim low gross honors.  His round included four birdies, one more than Mark Jeffers in his round of 35.  James Hager and Dave Wininger also had rounds of 35.  Low net honors went to Lonnie Hawkins with a score of 29.  Tom Flynn and Derek Gilbertson had net 30 rounds.  Low team score was posted by Lonnie and his partner, Dan Jones, a nifty 10 under par 60.  Larry Sutton claimed two hole prizes, one at #3 with a close to the pin shot, and the other at #6 with a long putt.  Lonnie Hawkins, Terry Padgett, Mark Potts and Derek Gilbertson also claimed hole prizes.  The team of John Walker and Skip Ackerman topped the standings in team competition at the end of the day.  At 240 points, they hold a 15 point lead over Jake Divine and Brandon Inman and a 20 point lead over Jordon Divine and Mitch Jeffers.   Jordan Divine, with 475 points, leads the individual standings by 30 points.  Skip Ackerman is second while Jake Divine, Dan Jones and Brandon Inman round out the top five.

The league's team tournament is at the three quarter mark with Skip Ackerman and John Walker in the lead with a score of eight under par.  Two back and tied for second place are the teams of Mike Breeden and Bryant Trambaugh and TJ McAtee and Alan Burch.

Of note:  Fourteen teams from the Tuesday Men's League signed up and are participating in the Mixed League May Challenge.

TMPL Event 5 Recap

Joe Gray and Tom Walker teamed up on Thursday morning to shoot a team net low of 56 with Joe firing a net 27 on the day.  Those scores were good for the lows of the day in team and individual net.  Junior Byron fired a second consecutive 35 to claim the low gross honors.  Lee Wininger and Phil Roberts took the close to the pin prizes at holes seven and nine while Terry LaMar rolled in the long putt at hole eight.  At the end of play for event 5, Patty Bowling and Pam Byron, though losing their match to Susan and Frank Fee by a score of 6.5 to 7.5, remained at the top of the team standings.  Nipping at their heels only a half point back are the teams of Rex Hudson and Jack Butcher along with Vic Wallace and Phil Roberts.  Patty also remains at the top of the individual standings with 238 points; Jack Butcher is second at 207 points and Vic Wallace climbed into third place with 184 points.

In the Team Handicapped Tournament, Vic Wallace and Phil Roberts jumped into first place with their net 63 on the day.  Their 27 hole total stands at minus 9.  Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson, at minus 5, are second, while Tony Wease and Phil Hardwick, leaders after 18 holes, are third at minus 3.  The tournament concludes next week with a final nine holes of play.

Of note:  Five of the Thursday League teams joined in the May Challenge bringing the total to nineteen participating teams in the four game challenge being played over a two week period.

Thursday Math Play League Thursday Results Event 5

The results for today's TMPL are posted here.

Thursday Match Play League Today at 9

Event 5, third week of the four week Team Tournament and the start of the May Challenge.  Nice weather today on top of everything else though come prepared for the gnats - vanilla, absorbine jr, avon product (something with 'soft' in it - can't seem to remember it - skin so soft?), a dryer sheet (Bounce?) in your cap.  I have also had success with a bandanna over my head and under my cap covering my ears and neck and flapping about.  Expect there are several other home remedies out there that have been effective.

Bring your A game.  Oh, wasn't able to fill all the sub spots - team 15 (1) and 16 (2).  So, if you have a pal just aching to come play golf this morning bring her along or send her down.  We'll put her out there and let her have a go at it.

Tuesday Men's League Results

Results are posted for yesterday's play here.  If you played early, you missed out on the cooling, windy and misty conditions that greeted the late afternoon and evening players.  Sure kept the bugs down though, or, as Mike Albertson said, they (the bugs) were smart enough to stay out of the nasty weather.

In the Mixed League May Challenge, 14 teams from the Tuesday Men's League are signed up and got their initial Best Ball score in.  One of the teams also got their scramble in (McAtee and Drake).  Results will be posted once the Thursday Match Play League entrants get entered and post some scores.

Tuesday Men - Come on Down!

Looks like another nice day and with the temperatures not favoring the bug population.  Bad for the birds loving the little beasties but good for us guys walking around in the midst of them.  Course is in great condition with most everything shaping up very nicely.  Look for some run on your tee shots and some bounce on and around the greens.

Don't forget that the May Challenge starts today with the best ball portion of the game (the best net score between you and your partner is the team score).  And some time between today and next Tuesday, get to the course and play the scramble part of the game.  Reminder:  You must sign up before you go out today.  If you don't have a partner (and you must play with the same one each of the four events), sign up and another single may come along in the same situation.

This is also the third week of the Team Handicapped Tournament with Alan Burch and TJ McAtee in the lead with minus 7 for the first 18 holes.  Expect fireworks with lots of low net scores being posted today.

Bits and Pieces

-Golfers will be happy to hear the the bugs were absent from the golf course yesterday, and I expect today as well.  Sunday's misty drizzle and low temperatures proved too much for the little nasties.  Unfortunately, those conditions also kept golfers from getting out as well.

-On the Big Boys Tour yesterday, David Toms is probably kicking himself today for two things: the decision to go for the green with his second shot on the 16th hole, which he dumped in the water, and then the missed short putt on the first extra hole that gave the Players Championship to KJ Choi.  Pretty neat having two of the three guys in the final group duking it out for the victory.

-Tiger, Tiger, where art thou.  He sure is mastering the art of not being around.  And have you noticed that Phil Mickelson, the big lefty, has kinda disappeared as well?  Not as thoroughly as TW, but definitely gone from the highlight reels.  The changing face of golf.

-LPGA is back on the course this week at the Sybase Match Play Championship in Gladstone, NJ.  Final field is here; guess they haven't announced the pairings yet though expect it's done by Rolex ranking. Nope.  Here's how they do it:

The draw for the Sybase Match Play Championship will once again follow a unique format. The 64 players in the field will be given a number from 1-64 based on their Rolex Rankings. The top-32 players will be automatically seeded into the brackets. Their opponents will be determined through a blind draw.
Okay.  Lets get on with the blind draw then.

-Breakfast time.  Diane was off to Walmart early and then I think up to the Donut Barn to bake.  Could be wrong there.  She left before I had rolled out of bed.

-Tip for the day:  Put another log on the fire.  Just kidding.  Go out and play golf like it was March 1st except play with your May 16th rust free golf swing.

DJ Harder Claims Second Ace at Lakeview

DJ Harder, long time local golfer and now a college student home after his first year of studies, found a second hole-in-one at Lakeview Golf Course yesterday.  Using both a Callaway ball, a Diablo, and a Callaway club, an X24 7 iron, he aced #3 from a distance of 149 yards.  This is the second hole-in-one for DJ at Lakeview; his first came at hole #7 on August 8th of 2007.  Congrats, DJ.

Photos from Thursday

Jeffers, Allen and Byron Win Saturday Scramble

Photo: Joe Allen, Short Jeffers and Kevin Byron caught in a gleeful moment after winning the Saturday Morning Scramble at Lakeview earlier today.          Photo by Mike Bird.

Short Jeffers, Joe Allen and Kevin Byron muffed thier initial tee shot, bogyed the first hole but then shot five under over the last eight holes to win the Saturday Morning Scramble.  The trio, posting a score of 31, took turns hitting good shots and ended up birdieing four of the last five holes after finding a bird at #2 to offset the plus one score at #1.  Four other teams competed for the prize with Kevin Johnson joining dad Curt to post a score of 32 for second place.  Doug Denson and Wayne Souerdike shot a 33 while Mike Bird and Stan Graber along with Trenton Kidwell and Tracy Rayhill shot 34's.  Brothers Dave and Lee Wininger finished with an even par 35.  Of note: Stan Graber had a solo eagle at #4 with a 285 yard drive, an approach to seven foot of the pin and then the eagle putt.

Thursday Match Play League Results Event 4 Recap

Low scores for league players last Thursday were lead by Junior Byron's low gross 35 and by the low net scores of Vic Wallace (27) and Dave Brown (28).  Vic joined with partner Phil Roberts in garnering the low net team score of 59.  Junior Byron and Al Kavanaugh claimed the hole prizes at the par threes while Jack Lents rolled in the long putt of the day at the eighth hole.  Pam Byron and Patty Bowling remained at the top of the team standings, winning their match with Lee Wininger and Ray Shaw, 9 to 5.  Patty also remains on top of the individual standings with 195 points to Jack Butcher's 164.  John Chapman's 150 is good for third place.

In the Team Handicapped Tournament, the players finished their second nine holes with Tony Wease and Phil Hardwick vaulting to the lead with a round of 66 which gave them an 18 hole score of -4.  Rex Hudson and Jack Butcher also had a second nine score of 66 to tie Phil Roberts and Vic Wallace, with their sterling second nine score of 59, at -2 for second place.  Complete scores and standings can be found at golflakeview.com.

-After all the excitement of the event, six of the thirty-two league players continued on for a second nine in a game of skins and flags.  Jack Lents pretty much stole the show, starting things off by missing a very short putt on two to give Tony Wease the first skin.  He then putted one in from just off the green at #3 and chipped another in on #4 for skins of his own.  After Mike Bird rolled in a birdie putt on #5 for the fourth skin in four holes, Jack claimed two flags with the closest to the pin shot at #7.  Mike Bird closed out the scoring with a close to the pin shot of his own on #9 though Phil Hardwick made a nifty little four foot putt on the last hole to keep his buddy and league playing partner, Tony Wease, from getting a second skin.

Reminder: May Challenge starts next week.
