Saturday Scramble: Wininger, Souerdike and Kevin Byron Go Low

Dave Wininger, Wayne Souerdike and Kevin Byron used a double birdie on hole #3 and an eagle on #6 to vault the team to a best of the season five under win in the Saturday Scramble. Wayne rolled one in from off the green on three and then chipped one in at six to lead the attack on a course that proved surprisingly easy for several teams. The team of Tyler Kidwell, Junior Byron and Curt Johnson double birdied #7 and followed that with a birdie on #8 but gave one back on #9 to fall one stroke shy with a score of minus four. Jason Rominger, Trenton Kidwell and Karry Stoll fired a two under par with birdies at the expected birdie holes, numbers two, four, six and eight, but found trouble at #3 with a double bogie and a final score of minus 2. Mike Kidwell, Mike Bird, Greg Potts and Joe Doyle found a couple of birdies to offset a couple of bogeys for an even par round that made them the 'drag-in-the-caboose' team of the day. The scramble was again a modified one with golfers playing their own balls on the par threes.

Community League Results

This week's highlights include a super low net round of 29 by Noah Callahan. Jim Hart had low net for Seniors in the league with a 32 while Missy Kneip had low net round for the Women with a 33. Team low net score for the week went to Kent Summers and Noah Callahan with a score of 65. Low gross scores belong to Tyler Walton for the Men with a 37, Mike Bird for the Seniors with a 37, and Kim Jones and Kay Sheetz for the Women with 50's. Noah Callahan and Joe Potts found birdies at hole #4 while Paul Hart picked up one at #2. Tyler Walton and Mike Bird shared the most pars for the event at seven. As a group, the players averaged a gross score 49.44 for the week. In the standings after two weeks of play, Missy Kneip is up three points on Jim Hart in the Individual competition; in Team competition, Missy and playing partner Cam Sheetz are six points up on the father/son team of Bob and Tyler Walton.

Senior League

Bob Norris and Pam Byron had super outings with each of them coming in with net scores of 12 under par. Pam also got the long putt on #8. Low gross went to Al Kavanaugh with his 39; Jack Butcher and Junior Byron followed closely with 40's. Low net team score was a tie between the teams of Virgil Harper and Don Lannan, and Bob Norris and Sam Potts. Each had outstanding 63's. Other hole prize winners included Jack Lents on #3, Mike Bird on #7 and Dick Barber on #9. Both Bird and Barber went on to make birdies to go with their hole prizes. Other birdies were collected by Virgil Harper and Al Kavanuagh at #6, and Ray Shaw at #9. Most pars at five were gathered by Jack Butcher and Junior Byron. Of note: Wilma Bateman had a super round going through eight holes, took a triple bogey on her ninth, #4, and still finished with a fine net round of four under par. Dick Barber and John Chapman had Mike Bird and Richard Swayze on the ropes until their last hole where they each took a double par, which tied the holes and gave low net to their opponents. Twenty-one of thirty players had net par rounds or better. Average gross for the group was 48.57, half a stroke better than last week.

Tuesday Men's League

The results of the Individual Handicapped Tournament are finally in and Tim Voegerl is our winner with a net score for the 18-hole event of 59. Noah Callahan, the leader after the first nine holes, finished second with a 60. Tied for third place with 64's were Tom McAtee, Jim Murphy and Virgil Harper.

Event 8 highlights: A sterling outing for TJ McAtee with a 34 gross and a net of 26; TJ played a lot of golf this past week and even came out Monday night and practiced his putting. Bryant Trambaugh and Noah Callahan shot net 30's to tie for second place in low net while Kevin Johnson tied TJ in low gross with his own 34. Low net team goes to TJ McAtee and sub Josh Hawkins with their 58; second place was shared by several teams shooting 62's: John Drake and Dean Winkler, Todd Baker and Noah Callahan, and Kyle Jones (subbing for Mike Breeden) and Bryant Trambaugh. James Hager shot a 35 and saw his handicap drop to zero, making him the first of our regulars to reach that plateau. Super subs Mark Potts and Kevin Johnson maintain a sub zero handicap. Eight hole prizes, including four from the rain-delayed Event 7, were claimed by the following players: Kevin Johnson, Chris Bledsoe, Mike Bird, Chuck Baker, Dave Wininger, Greg Potts, Ryan Johnson and Tom McAtee. The standings show Terry Padgett and Gary Burris leading Larry Sutton and Brent Courter by a single point in the Team competition; James Hager has a 43 point lead on Dave Wininger in the Individual competition.

The majority of the players completed their rain-delayed event 7 rounds with Mike Arvin and Tom McAtee firing the low net rounds with scores of 29. Short Jeffers shot a 34 and James Hager a 35 for low gross. Team low net was shared by James Hager and Ryan Johnson with the team of Junior and Kevin Byron.

Of note: Tim Voegerl prepared for his golf game by reading a little more of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. Greg Potts had his first ball on #5 sail out of bounds and his second hit a tree and bound back beyond the tee box and onto #4 green; he settled for a maximum double par on the hole. Dave Strange had much better luck with two of his putts from just off the green finding the bottom of the cup.
