Tribune article for the week

Loogootee Tribune article for the week of June 2nd:

Community League:

The Lakeview Community League started with sixteen teams currently signed up and getting their rounds in this past week. Teams are made up of three father-son combinations, one grandma with her grandson, an uncle and a nephew, one couple and the rest friend-friend pairings. Oldest player at near 85 is super senior Bob Norris, and the youngest is Lucas Bird who is very near 13. Twenty-five percent of the players are ladies. Of note in this week's play: Bob Norris gets his first birdie in several years, knocking in a six foot putt on #9; Cam Sheetz, a transfer from the USG League of a year ago, shot lot net with a 32 and was closely followed by Tom Taylor's 33. Bryce Crane and Ben Hogan were two others who finished with sub par net rounds, both coming in with 34's. Low gross was turned in by Dave Wininger at 38 with Tyler Walton just behind with a 39. Low net team at 67 was earned by Cam Sheetz and newcomer to league play, Missy Kneip; Tom Taylor and Richard Swayze followed with a 68 and Ben and Chris Hogan shot a 69. Four birdies were registered during play: Cam Sheetz, Bob Norris, Kay Sheetz and Bryce Crane. Joe Potts and Dave Wininger got the most pars at six. Average gross score for the group was 49.17.

Saturday Scramble:

Potts, Bird, Stoll and Doyle Triumph

Greg Potts, Mike Bird, Karry Stoll and Joe Doyle prevailed in the Saturday Manager's scramble. A birdie chip in by Greg on #8 and then two up and downs from just off the green on #9 gave the team a score of one under in the modified scramble. The team of Wayne Souerdike, Junior Byron, Curt Johnson and Delbert Stoll came in a stroke back at even par, finding the short #7 hole again being a bear of a place to make par. The team's double bogey on that hole bordering the lake and just short enough to throw one's game all out of whack, hurtled them from a possible one stroke victory to a one stroke loss.

Seniors Event 7 Notes and Comments

Charlie Sheetz was more like his old 2007 self and came in with the low net of the day, a 30. He was followed by several players at 31: Dale DeLong, Virgil Harper, Al Kavanaugh and Clyde Wake. Al also shared low gross for the day with Mike Anderson, each shooting a 39. Low net team score was turned in by Virgil Harper and Don Lannan, a nifty 63. Sharpshooters were Dale DeLong, Sam Potts, Al Kavanaugh and Ray Shaw. At the end of play, Richard Swayze and Mike Bird held onto the top spot in Team competition, though slowed down by Jack Butcher and Rex Hudson, with a total of 60.5 points and are followed by the Dave Strange/Clyde Wake team with 56 points. Clyde Wake jumped into the lead in the Individual competition with 251 points, with Al Kavanaugh and Richard Swayze tied for second at 227 points. Birdies for the day went to Virgil Harper on #2 and Jack Butcher on #4; most pars at six were made by Al Kavanaugh and Mike Bird.

Tuesday Men's League:

Rains poured from the skies at 3:30 on Tuesday, the 27th, and remained for several hours. When declared a "rain event" by the manager, players are to finish their rounds sometime before the beginning of play the following event. Of note: Before the rains, Tom McAtee birdied #2, went into #8 shooting one over par and finished with a 39 gross and a sterling 29 net. The Byrons, Junior and Kevin, went out in the drizzle and rain and did some good: a 36 for Junior and a 44 for Kevin and a net 64 for the team. Mike Kidwell came in on Thursday and found an eagle on #2: he used his three wood from just off the green to sink a 25 footer.
