Lakeview League Preseason Scramble Information

Lakeview Golf Course

2011 Preseason Mixed League Two Person Handicapped Scrambles

Weeks of April 3rd and April 10th

*play anytime during the week, nine holes each week

*play with your league partner or any other league member or substitute.

*play either week or each week

*Prize for each 9 hole scramble and for the 18 holes (must play with same partner to qualify for 18 hole prize).

Entry Fee: $2 per person per scramble

Handicap calculation:

*Handicap is the sum of the individual players' handicaps divided by three with a maximum

of nine: example: A player has a 7 handicap, B player has a 10 handicap – 10 plus 7 equals 17.

17 divided by 3 =5.67.  Team handicap is 5.67.

Bits and Pieces

-Brent Kelley at about.com talks about PowerPlay Golf.  Nine holes of golf, two pins on each green (one an easy setting, one a more difficult placement), stableford scoring with the requirement that you must go for the hard pin on three greens during the first eight holes and have the option of doing so on the ninth.  Something being touted as a way to increase golf play and interest.  My opinion:  Just another golf game with an added stick to complicate things.  Lots of golfers (especially league golfers) in this area already play just nine holes and don't have any trouble picking out a game to play in the process.  Go take a peek; you're even given a chance to vote on what you think - majority are voting for 'just regular golf'.

-Very interesting and enjoyable Words from the Wise in the March 28th issue of Golf World.  The wise, in this case, include Jack Burke Jr, Dan Jenkins, Peter Alliss, Judy Rankin, Dean Beman and Bill Coore, William C. (Bill) Campbell.  Some of the 'nuggets' are excerpted here at the online site.  For instance, Dan Jenkins, author and sportswriter:
I can't see why I'm supposed to like it that every 90-pound weakling can now drive the ball 310 yards, find no rough anywhere he plays and, due to superior maintenance, make 10-footers like he used to make two-footers. A pro named David Ogrin once described me so accurately, saying I'm a "hostile voice from a previous generation." Well, somebody has to be.

-Golf's big boys are down in Houston today and the big girls tee up out at Mission Hills in California.  For the ladies, I expect Michelle Wie, Jiyai Shin, IK Kim, Na Yeon Choi and Yani Tseng all to be in contention come Sunday afternoon.  Others to watch: Karrie Webb, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer.  Sentimental favorite: Julie Inkster.

-Not much golfing in this neck of the woods yesterday.  More today with sunshine and temps in the 50's.

-For the bird watchers out there:  An eagle flew over the service building yesterday and then back out across the lake.  Noted a couple of blue herons along the lake's edge - didn't see many of them this winter.  Both the killdeer and the swallows showed up for the first time these past two days.  Must be bugs hatching out there somewhere.

Bits and Pieces

-At the Ladies first major, the Kraft Nabisco:  The Wie Lass tees it up with the Pink Panther tomorrow at 1:26pm on the 10th tee.  All the pairings here.  Yani Tseng is the defending champion.

-#2 Texas A&M beat #1 Baylor and #1 UConn smashed #2 Duke last night to fill out the final four in the women's big dance.  On Sunday evening, ND plays UConn for the fourth time this year in the first game while Stanford battles Texas A&M in the second game.  Two #2's taking on two #1's.  Here's to the underdogs taking the top dogs down and meeting on Tuesday night for the championship.

-Go Butler.

-Today's weather sucks.  Not snowing though.  Really should get back to those IRS documents that need completing within a couple of weeks, but that doesn't appeal at all.  Maybe tomorrow.

Bits and Pieces

-Watched the Notre Dame Ladies sock it to the #1 seeded Tennessee Ladies last night, beating the Vols for the first time ever (after 20 losses) and punching their ticket to the Final Four in Indy next week (Sunday and Tuesday).  Skylar Diggins, the super soph for the Irish, was the star of the show, scoring 24 points and playing super all around. More on her in this article by espn's Graham Hays.

-Stanford also is going to the Final Four, for the fourth straight year.  They beat Gonzaga last night to advance.  Tonight, UConn plays Duke and Baylor takes on Texas A&M for the other two slots.

-There was a Woods who won a tournament this past weekend.  That would be Tiger's niece, Cheyenne, who helped her Wake Forest University teammates win a tournament being played in North Carolina.  The story from Emily Kay.

-Wonder if Phil Mickelson has a better chance of winning this year's Masters than does Tiger?  He is the guy with the green jacket afterall.  Betting odds?

-Eric down with son Lucas yesterday afternoon cutting tees, collars and greens, and repairing some of the bad spots on the greens.  Mentioned that we really do need some rain.  Maybe some today, later.

-Remember the first part of April last year?  Days with temperatures in the 70's.  Looking for more of the same, please.

Lakeview League Preseason Scrambles and Opening Date Approaching Fast

The Lakeview Leagues get their season underway next week with an optional nine hole two person mixed league scramble.  Tuesday Men's League and Thursday Match Play League participants are invited to pair up with their league partner or another league member or substitute and participate in this the first of two preseason scrambles.  The event starts on Sunday, April 3rd, and continues for the following seven days.  Golfers have the option of playing their scramble anytime during the week.  A second preseason scramble will be held during the week of April 10th, the final warmup before the start of the regular season.  Tuesday Men commence on the 19th of April with their first regular season event while the Thursday Match Play golfers start on April 21st at 10am.  All League players are encouraged to register well in advance of the season's first event.  More information about League play can be found at Lakeview's website, golflakeview.com.

Bits and Pieces

-Congrats to the Washington Hatchets and their second straight state championship in boys basketball.  The Zeller era was nothing but spectacular.  Too bad Cody's brother Tyler's team, North Carolina, bowed out of the Big Dance with their loss to KY yesterday.  And congrats to the Indy Metro team for their state championship in 1A; they knocked off the Cougars of North Daviess just nine days ago in their run to the title.

-On the Big Dance:  Down to one team in the guess em Romper Stomper group - UConn.  But I definitely want Butler to win next Saturday and then again on Monday.  Btw, a great quartet of games over the weekend.  Love the fact that all the #1's and all the #2's have been excused; love the fact that two 'who-are-these-guys' teams made it all the way to the Final Four; and love the fact that Butler, one of those two teams, is there for the second year in a row.  Our topsy-turvy world.

-And, speaking of topsy-turvy worlds:  Tiger and Phil completed the Bay Hill portion of their Masters preparation by firing four day totals of -1, seven strokes behind the winning score and in a tie for 24th place.  With any kind of consistency, either one of those guys, along with a host of other golfers, could have won down at Arnie's tournament as the top position was open for the taking yesterday.  As Johnny Miller said, lots of oil being leaked on the way to the 18th hole yesterday.  Martin Laird started the day on top, fell out of contention and then found himself back on top at the end.  Surprised, Martin?  Bet he was.

-On the ladies side, out at the KIA Classic:  Sandra Gal used a two foot birdie putt at the final hole to take the trophy with a final score of -16.  Jiyai Shin missed a five foot birdie putt to open the door for Gal.  Michelle Wie had herself a good Sunday, a three under 70, and finished in a tie for 7th place.  The LPGA has their first major this week, the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills.

-At Lakeview:  Getting ready for the start of League season.  Believe it or not, we have our first preseason scramble next week.  Do not expect next Sunday's daybreak to be one with two inches of fresh snow on the ground (like what we found yesterday).  Sunny and near 50 today; that sounds good enough to golf, at least a little bit.

Bits and Pieces

-At the Big Dance:  How sweet those Bulldogs are! Don't expect there were too many people out there thinking they were going to pull it out until they pulled it out.  And that would be only when time ran out.  What a story these guys are!  Go, Blue!

-Btw, the Irish women took it to Oklahoma yesterday, 78-53.  Take on #1 Tennessee tomorrow.

-Got to watch Tiger screw it up yesterday in a round of 74 that made his scorecard look like a rainbow (white, red, purple, green and yellow).  Jeesh.  He heads into day four at Bay Hill tied for 29th at -1, ten strokes behind Martin Laird.  If it's any consolation, he's just one back of Phil Mickelson.  TW tees off at 10:35 this morning which means we might get to see him finish his round when tv coverage starts.

-Did you catch Spencer Levin's lack of emotional control late in his round when one of his tee shots went awry?  Some serious rage there.  Expect he will address that in the next month or two and become a much better player for it.  Just needing a little maturity...

-At the Kia Classic:  Jiyai Shin And Sandra Gal running away from everybody else at -15 and -14 after three rounds.  Na Yeon Choi, after an eight under Saturday, is lurking five back.  Michelle Wie is ten back after a five birdie, three bogey third round.  World's #1 lady golfer, Yani Tseng, is tied for 14th at -3.

-Here in Loogootee:  Sunny skies, cool temps and two inches of snow on the ground.  Glad I got to play a bit of golf yesterday.

Souerdike and Bird Win Cool Saturday Scramble With Hot Putting

Mike Bird (yeh, me) ran in a twenty something eagle putt from just off the green at #4, a birdie putt of some fifteen feet on five, and another birdie putt of twelve feet on #9, and playing partner Wayne Souerdike hit a twenty something par putt on #7 as the duo made hot with the short stick in posting a 32 in the Saturday Scramble.  That was plenty good enough to beat Doug Denson and Lee Wininger who shot a ho hum 35 on the day.  The foursome played in very cool and windy conditions.

Bits and Pieces

-11am scramble.  Looks like the storms will come in later this afternoon.  Bring a sweater.

-At the KIA Classic:  Jiyai Shin goes absolutely bananas, fires nine under for the day and leads the ladies' event at -12, four better than Sandra Gal, and nine better than Michelle Wie (T-8), who had a plus two on the day and gave up eleven strokes to Shin.  Ouch.

-At Bay Hill:  Tiger had a good day at -4, is tied for tenth and is six behind the leader, Martin Laird.  Expectations are growing for him to have a good tournament.  Is this the one?  Is he back?  We'll know more later today.  Hey, we might even get to see him play some on the weekend!

-At the big dance:  I'm down to two teams left in the hunt: UConn and North Carolina.  The Ky-OSU game last night was a honey.  Note: Three of the #1 seeds are gone.  Does that make it easy pickins for the one that's left, Kansas?  Hardly.  Btw, Eric sent me this link to a Nate Silver NYTimes article taking issue with the NCAA seeding process.  In the end, Silver suggests that the top 16, maybe 24, get seeded and that everybody else get thrown into a hat for a random draw.  It's okay with me if they want to do it that way...

-Go, Butler.  I'ld be more than happy with a Butler-North Carolina championship game.  Wouldn't you?

-Sun is shining, temp is all the way up to 40.  Almost time to head to the golf course.

Saturday Scramble Start Time

11am.  Weather permitting.

Bits and Pieces

-At the KIA Classic, the Wie Lass opens with a five under round and sits two behind the leader, Amanda Blumenherst, and one behind Sandra Gal. Her round included seven birdies and two bogeys.  Go, Michelle, get that 1st LPGA win on home soil.

-At Bay Hill, Tiger posts a one over round and is tied for 30th with a host of other players (eight behind the leader but only four out of second place).  His driving was mostly unexceptional: he ended up the day tied for 117th in driving distance and tied for 116th in driving accuracy.  Still, he did well in greens in regulation, coming in tied for 21st after day one.

-At the big dance:  Had only one winner in last night's games, UConn, and tumbled out of the top spot and all the way down to #6 in the Romper Stompers 'guess-em' group.  Do like the Butler team advancing.  Heck, might as well go all the way again and this time close the deal.  First thing they have to do is take care of Florida on Saturday.  Another note:  Was watching the Duke-Arizona game when the Wildcats went completely bonkers in the second half and blew the Blue Devils to kingdom come with a 19-2 run that saw them go from six back to eleven up.  The Dukies appeared bewildered by it all.  Don't see that very often, like never.

-Another coolish day here in Loogootee.  Good for mending.

Bits and Pieces

-Just heard that Payton Manning celebrates his 39th birthday today.  Holy Cow!  Time to get that second ring, #18.

-Here's a major golfing achievement attained by one of our own:  Frank Fee went birdie-bogey for the first six holes and then par for the final three to get his very first par round.  This happened sometime last week, Frank knows the exact date, and I've been meaning to post it now for several days.  Am surprised that the 'first par' doesn't get more attention and recognition in the golfing world.  It sure is huge and I remember mine well, not the date but rather the circumstances.  Like Frank's, it came well after my 50th birthday as I was late discovering the joys of golf.  And, indeed, it was a very sweet moment.

-The big boys are started down at Bay Hill.  Big girls pretty soon out in LA.  Be a good day to sit and watch them what with clouds and temps hovering around 40.  That's a brr after our 70's.

-Guess there will be a few people watching basketball tonight.  The big dance continues.  Expect I'll watch some.  Like the Butler-Wisconsin game.  Picked the Badgers but my heart's with the Dogs.  (Just noticed that my guessing rank of 2049 is better than 94% of those making picks.  Sounds impressive.)

-Time for breakfast with Diane on a cool morning in southern Indiana.

Judy Walker brought in a copy of part of the September 22, 1977 issue of the Loogootee Tribune yesterday. The photos show the early stages of Lakeview Golf Course. The top one, of the practice green, is pretty self evident. The lower one, of #1 tee box, not so self evident. Ed Summers lent a hand and gave me the right perspective. He remembers exactly where that barn used to be. Do you? Or don't you need that reference point to 'see' where you are standing and looking through the lens of the camera?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know where Mary Pat Todd is today?

Bits and Pieces

-Tomorrow's pairings of note in the Bigs (local times):
-KIA Classic: 12:10 pm: Ai Miyazato, Michelle Wie, Maria Hjorth
-Bay Hill: 12:56 pm: Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Gary Woodland

-In the ladies big dance, #6 Oklahoma beat #3 Miami last night and take on #2 Notre Dame this weekend (Saturday at 2pm).  All four #1's (UConn, Stanford, Baylor and Tennessee) made it through the first two rounds.  Go, Irish.

-The men's big dance:  Go, Butler.  They play Wisconsin on Thursday at 10pm.

-Lots of golfers at Lakeview yesterday including a trio of guys working on the new highway.  Not our first visitors from the I69 project.

-And, in case you haven't heard, temperatures go into a tailspin after today for several days.  Best get in at least nine today if you like 60's and 70's type temperatures.  Back into the 40's starting tomorrow.  Yuk.

-Golfing suggestion:  Best be working on your short game these days.  That would be from 125 yards and on in.  Flush those approach shots; tighten up the distance control on those chips, and nail down your pace on those putts.  (Because of this dastardly chest cold, I have been forced to restrict my playing to the short game - an energy thing.)

-Be thinking league.  Start of Tuesday Men and Thursday Match coming up directly.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Bits and Pieces

-Irish women beat Temple; advance to Sweet 16.

-At the course: Eric down and drilling the tee boxes; will throw down some seed today, just in time for tonight's rain.  Grass is growing, just need more of it all around the course.  Warmer nights are going to help.

-The start of league, Tuesday Men (April 19th) and Thursday Match (April 21st), is fast approaching.  Don't forget the mixed league nine hole scrambles the two weeks prior to the start of regular season play.  Those will be taking place the weeks of April 3rd and April 10th, players may team up with any other league player or sub and may also play at any time during the week.

-At home:  Finally went to the doctor and got dosed up for this chest thingee that started it's third week yesterday.  Actually spent about eight hours sleeping last night.  What a change.  On the mend.  Nasty stuff going around.

-Going to clean up and head on out to the golf course.  Another one of those mid 70 days here in southern Indiana.  Pack your sticks in your car and stop on in sometime during the day.  A little golf is good for you, right?  Right.

Monday, March 21, 2011

Bits and Pieces

-Cougars fall to Metro on Saturday in semi state.  Congrats on a great season up at North Daviess.  Coach Dalrymple and the players did super.

-Irish get kicked in the face by Florida State late last night.  There goes my pick for the champion.  Dang.  Still, even with all the upsets yesterday, ended up on top at day's end at the Romper Stopmers.  One point up on Butler student, Kayla Wininger, and six points up on Kevin and Miki in St. Louis (the 'lambs-going-to-the-slaughter' non basketball fans in the game for the fun of it!).  Switching my allegiance to the feisty Bulldogs of Butler.  The Irish women play Temple tonight in a second round game over in the Women's tournament.

-At the play for charity LPGA event down in Phoenix, Karrie Webb won her second tournament in a row with a six under final round, nipping Paula Creamer and Brittany Lincicome by one stroke.  KIA Classic coming up this week.

-Lots of golfers at Lakeview yesterday.  Course is drying out very nicely and the grass is definitely popping up.  More golf today with temps in the 70's though with a chance of rain - didn't see anything on the radar; must be going to pop up on us.  Guess I'll head on over there and open up, maybe practice my chipping.

Saturday Scramble Winners: Short Jeffers and Lee Wininger With a Score of 33

Other scores from this morning's scramble:

-Mike Seals and Wayne Souerdike: 34
-Dave Wininger and Joe Allen: 34
-Tyler Kidwell and Travis Brett: 35
-Mike Kidwell and Tracy Rayhill: ??

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 10 this morning.

-Cougar basketball at 1 this afternoon.  Looks like it is going to be aired on wttv-4 as well as streamed here.  Eric's going up with his family at 10:30;  if I wasn't feeling so terrible, I'ld go as well.  Oh well, they're going to have to win without me in attendance.

-Weekday games in the NCAA tournament now in the books.  Tied at the top in the Romper Stompers group and stand 2142 in the whole tournament.  Eric is at the bottom of our group and stands 23000 and something overall.  Don't know how many people are participating.  As Marty says, this is just round one.

-Forgot to mention yesterday, along with the photo of Bric and Tracy:  This dynamic duo whipped up on Curt Johnson and Tony Trambaugh in a friendly Wednesday evening skins and flags match.

-Okay.  On with the day.  A little golf and then a lot of basketball.  Go Cougars.

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble tomorrow morning - 10am start.

-Lots of golfers with all the sun and the much higher temperatures yesterday (high  of 73).  The grounds even dried out significantly - will take off the cart path only restrictions today (expect for #5).

-Had three losers in my tournament picks yesterday: Louisville, Michigan State and St. John's.  Sat on top of the pile in our small group, Romper Stompers, till those last two day ending losses - MSU and SJU.  Izzo must be talentless up in Lancing this year; very unusual for him to have a team exit so early.

-Girls tee it up in Phoenix later today.  They're playing for fun, remember?  No cash distribution at the conclusion of the tournament, all going to charity.  Expect you all to do the same one of these days - go to work and donate your earnings to charity, three or four days worth.  Btw, Paul Casey is leading at the Transitions down in Florida where the purse is $5 1/2 million, all of which will be distributed to the men at the end of four days of golf.

-Forgot to mention that The Celibates (BYU) won last night.  Beat a tough Wofford team and now take on the upstart Gonzaga Zags on Saturday.

-Getting on with the day.  Out to the golf course shortly.

Thursday Golfers at Lakeview

Don Carrico, Kim Jones, Tracy Rayhill and Bric Parker.

Bits and Pieces

-How about a 15" cup rather than the traditional 4 1/4 one?  As reported by the Bleacher Report and golfdigest.com, the participants had a ball.

-It's St. Pat's Day.  Big deal for you?  No big deal for me.  Of course, if I was observing a Lenten fast, might appreciate the lifting of restrictions on drinking and eating.

-2011 NCAA Tournament starts today.  Son Marty says Butler up today at 1pm.  They play Old Dominion and then probably Pittsburgh on Saturday.  Irish play Akron sometime - I know there's a schedule out there somewhere that shows the day and time of the games.  Okay, here's Thursday's schedule.  Guess the Irish play on Friday.

-Question:  Are you rearranging your schedule so that you can watch as much of the tournament as possible?

-The super golf weather might get in the way for some.  Yesterday's sun and light breeze and temperatures in the 60's did a lot to dry things out at Lakeview.  Even more today, I expect.  Eric came down and cut the tees; that helps.

-Fighting a chest cold which is in it's 8th day.  Should be over by now.  Dragging me down, down, down.  Not enough to keep me from the golf course a bit later.

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Bits and Pieces

-Michelle Wie not playing at the RR Donnelley Founders Cup this week down in Phoenix.  Her tweets on why not.  Money isn't an issue; it's finals week at Stanford.  Yani Tseng is playing and should be the odds on favorite to win what with her brilliant start to the 2011 season.

-On college hoops:  I am part of the Romper Stompers NYT make-a-guess-who's-going-to-win-it-all predicting society.  Have made my well thought out selections in both the men's and the women's brackets.  Guess what?  I have teams from the same school taking home the trophies, something which has been done only once before, right?  Not all that long ago.  2004.  Go Irish!  (Of course I'm serious.  What made you think I wasn't?)

-Indiana's high school hoops has its own madness - semi states this Saturday.  North Daviess Cougars going up against Indianapolis Metro at Southport and Rockville taking on Triton in Lafayette.  Go Cougars.

-And here on the local scene:  Golfing weather moving in.  Not here yet but later today for sure.  Hurray!

Bits and Pieces

-Tiger has another good Sunday (-6 to finish at -8, 25 putts) and finishes in the top ten, 8 strokes behind winner Nick Watney.   Looking like the old Tiger but, as has been said before, takes four good rounds in a tournament.  His playmates of the first two days, Graeme McDowell and Phil Mickelson, had a not so good weekends, finishing at +1 and +4 for the tournament.  Ouch.

-Congrats to Coach Dalrymple and the North Daviess Cougars on their regional win in Loogootee Saturday night and good luck to them as they go on to play Indianapolis Metro in the semi-state next Saturday in Southport at 1pm.

-In case you haven't noticed, March Madness gets underway this week.  That would be the college version of something Hoosiers experience at the high school level from mid February to the latter part of March.  Men's bracketWomen's bracket.

-Interesting stuff (from Diane): This year's July has 5 Fridays 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays.  This apparently happens once every 823 years.  I wonder how many people can arrange for five three day weekends.

-Extra hour of daylight with Sunday's clock change.  With rain and cool don't expect we'll take advantage of it today but maybe later in the week when temperatures soar into the 60's.  Hurray.

-Getting on with the day:  Books, movies, taxes.  Wonder what other fun things I can find along the way.

North Daviess Cougars Turn Things Around to Beat Rock Creek Academy Lions

When Diane and I arrived at the Jack Butcher Arena just before the end of the first quarter, all the cheering was coming from the other side. The Lions of Rock Creek had rocked the Cougars with an opening stanza burst that saw them ahead 16-4. But that was only the first quarter. By the end of two, the Cougars had clawed back to within three, and then completely dominated the second half, winning by 15. That's like a 50 to 23 turnaround over the final three quarters. Impressive.

Kidwell, Rayhill and Allen Win Saturday Scramble

Mike Kidwell, Tracy Rayhill and Joe Allen used birdies at holes four, five and six along with pars at the other holes to shoot a round of 32 and capture the Saturday Morning Scramble out at Lakeview earlier today. The other two participating threesomes, Dave Wininger, Wayne Souerdike and Lee Wininger, and Mike Seals, Mike Bird and Stan Graber, had rounds of 34.

Bits and Pieces

-At Doral:  TW at -1 thorugh 15 holes and could have been lower with a more true putter. Or so the CW is.  Did watch the highlights and Tiger's putts were right there in pace.  Dave Stockton would say "Great pace, Tiger!"  Expect more of them will drop for him today.  But the story isn't Woods' putting but rather Hunter Mahan's birdie binge.  He got seven of them in an eleven hole round (darkness stopped his round) and leads the pack at -7. Mickelson bested both TW and Graeme McDowell in the marquee match-up of the day.  Lefty at -2 through 15 holes, the G-Man at -1 along with Tiger.

-Like this story from Wei Under Par where Zach Johnson, Rory Sabbitini and Geoff Ogilvy sped up their round by having the closest guy to the hole at the 8th (their 17th hole) go ahead and finish out, run to the 9th tee and hit.  It worked as the trio did finish and got to sleep in, or whatever, this morning as others play golf, yesterday's golf.

-I wouldn't mind playing golf this morning - little chilly up here in southern Indiana, frost on the cars, in fact.  Should be nice enough this afternoon though.

-Scramble tomorrow at 10am.  That gives us all enough time to finish up and get down to the Jack Butcher Arena to support the North Daviess Cougars in their run for the regional crown.  They'll tip off against Rock Creek Academy around 12:15.  Go Cougars!

John Baugh's "Acrobatic" Lay-in Last Saturday Night

So called by John Mullen in his write-up of the sectional championship game in this week's Loogootee Tribune. The score closed out the third quarter and left the Lions one point shy of the Cougars.

Bits and Pieces

-Seen on a side bar at LinksLifeGolf:

Golf Quotes

"I don't know why people say Ben Hogan is untalkative. He speaks to me on every green. He says,'You're away.' ~ Jimmy Demaret
Made me chuckle.
-At that same link, the author picks his favorite in the seven top threesomes that go out today at Doral.  Worth a peek just to see who's playing together.  Btw, I think that pairing (top 21 golfers get to go out against each other) by the PGA is outstanding.  Coverage on The Golf Channel starts at 1:30.

-On the big boy tour and the sterling 20 somethings and the illusion of winning (from a comment over at Wei Under Par):
KC
20 something winning more?
Let me see…So far this year…
2 time winners Mark Wilson 36
Jonathan Bird 33
Jhonny Vegas 26
Bubba Watson 32
D.A Points 34
Aaraon Baddeley 29 (30 next week)
Johnson Wagner 30
Luke Donald 33
Rory Sabattini 34
Other than Vegas – who does not belong to the media darling 20-something clan, the rest are 30+ and seasoned pro golfers.
Does being young and famous creates the illusion of winning?
I think it does cause we sure have been hearing a lot about them these last few months.  In any case, congrats to the 30 somethings; they're doing well.
-For you readers out there (count me in):  From Golf Facts, my daily calendar (paraphased):  The PGA's Lucas Glover, a prolific reader, listed his five favorite books as: Copote's In Cold Blood, Cussler's The Navigator, Karkauer's Into Thin Air, Child's Killing Floor, and Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo.  I certainly agree that the first three are very good reads, the fourth I don't know and the fifth was a high school assignment (and whoever counts those as favorites?).  Here's a set of three that you might love, a series that I just finished and Diane has just picked up the third book: Steig Larsson's The Millenium Series.  Absolutely fantastic new heroine on the scene in Lisbeth Salander.  Picked up the books shortly after watching the movies which are super as well.

-Might be a good day to curl up with a book till the golf starts this afternoon.  Or, work on the taxes.  Doesn't that sound like fun?  Eric's coming after the Donut Barn closes and we're going to do just that.

-Eric told me that the Odon Journal has my photo of Issac Swartzentruber making that winning basket against the Lions last Saturday night on its front page.  Whoopee.

Bits and Pieces

-The Irish ladies lost again to the UConn Huskies last night in the Big East's tournament championship, 73-64.  They did close it to three or four points with five minutes to play but couldn't get any closer.  Dang.  Isn't Muffet McGraw tired of losing to Geno Auriemma?  Need another Ruth Riley.  Remember her?  Big part of ND's NCAA championship season in 2001.  Beat Purdue in the final.  From Wikipedia:
The highlight of her college career came in the 2001 NCAA tournament. In the championship game, Notre Dame was trailing Purdue, 66-64, when Riley scored the tying field goal. Then, with 5.8 seconds left and the score still tied, Riley drew a foul. She made both free throws to give Notre Dame its final 68-66 edge and its first women's national championship.[4] Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw, when asked about the critical play on which Riley was fouled, said, "it's the same play we've been running all season. It's called: 'Get the ball to Ruth.'"[5] Riley was the Most Outstanding Player of that year's Final Four.

-Woods, Mickelson and McDowell paired together for the first two rounds of the WGC-Cadillac Championship down in Doral, Florida this week.  From espn.com:
For this World Golf Championship event, the top 21 players in the world have been grouped according to the rankings. No. 1 Martin Kaymer, No. 2 Lee Westwood and No. 3 Luke Donald make up a group. No. 7 Paul Casey, No. 8 Rory McIlroy and No. 9 Steve Stricker are in another.
That's cool.  Question:  Do Tiger and Phil play well enough to stay with the hot McDowell?  No predictions on my part.  Will be happy if Tiger makes the cut and gets to play on the weekend.  Do expect the youngsters to continue to make statements.

-From the Indiana Basketball Digest, your chance to vote on Saturday's winner at the Loogootee regional.  When I cast my vote (all of 29 so far), North Daviess was the winner by a huge margin.  Link also provides discussion.

-Time for breakfast on this rainy Wednesday.  Think we've had enough of the wet stuff over the last several days.  Time for a little warm to get the grass growing.

The Other Early Morning Golfer

Good neighbor Jack who wasn't going to smile but then found the camera still clicking away (there were three clicks) and couldn't hold back that little half smile. Worth hanging around a bit more.

Notre Dame Ladies Win

They beat DePaul last night and that gets them to the championship game in the Big East Tournament.  UConn will be their opponent for the third time this year.  Time for the Irish to take the Huskies down a peg or two, don't you think?

Bits and Pieces

-Correction to Saturday night's expected regional championship game: North Daviess vs Trinity Luthern.  Eric reminded me that Wood Memorial beat Loogootee early in the year.  They also lost to North Daviess, Vincennes Rivet and Barr Reeve, along with eight other teams in an eleven loss season.  Looks like the times of the games are 10:30 and 12:15 for the day games, 8 for the evening game.  Site:  Jack Butcher Arena.  I fully expect North Daviess to advance to the semi state.

-From Mostly Harmless:  Future Hall of Famers?  He gives Michelle Wie and Cristie Kerr odds of 3-1 in making it.  Jiyai Shin, Paula Creamer and Yani Tseng are locks, in his opinion.  I certainly agree with him on Yani and Jiyai; but Paula Creamer?  He does admit that she is his favorite player.

-March 7th Rolex Rankings for the ladies.  Yani Tseng on top and will probably stay there for a long while.  Julie Inkster is #44 - that surprises me; seems like she is always hanging around the top of the leaderboard.  Guess not; just noteworthy when she is there because of her age.  Laura Davies, another oldie, is #48.  Ladies from Korea and the USA dominate the top 25 with Korea having nine and the USA seven.  Japan is well represented with four in the top 25.

-Tiger's Jupiter Island Practice Facility.  Just 3.5 acres.  Couldn't we build one of those around here?  Think it's been done - Lloyd Mosby had about that many acres devoted to his three or four hole golf facility up there in Bramble.  Wonder how many other golfers TW invites over to practice with him.  If he ever asked me, I would suggest we just head to the golf course and play 18 instead (for flags and skins, of course).  What better practice can you have than to get out there and play?

-Getting on with the day...

Bits and Pieces

-Three of the four girls state championships on Saturday were won by teams here in the southern part of Indiana.  Rivet won the 1A title; Evansville Memorial the 2A; and Jeffersonville the 4A.  Only the 2A title escaped the sweep by the southern belles.

-Saturday's 1A boys basketball regional match ups here in Loogootee (Sagarin ratings in parens):

Game one
Wood Memorial (255) vs Trinity Lutheran (183)

Game two
North Daviess (119) vs Rock Creek Academy (184)

Going by the ratings, should see North Daviess playing Rock Creek Academy in the final next Saturday evening.  The entire 1A bracket here.  Expect the first game to start at 10:30.  Go Cougars.

-Golf weather today.  Maybe a little on the cool side but, after several days of rain and yuk, am sure it will feel good to get out and swing a club again.  We were teased with that really nice week of weather in February and the first few days of March but these last three days have been not so nice.  Things will change; that we can be sure of.

Cougar Boys and Rivet Girls Win Championships

-Loogootee Lion promotional video here.

-In case you haven't heard, the Lions fell to the Cougars in a great sectional championship game up in Odon earlier tonight.  Score: 43-41.  Dang...

--But hey, go, Cougars!  Win the state!

-And hey, the Rivet girls sealed the deal in Fort Wayne with a 49-40 win over Turkey Run, bringing the state title and trophy down to our neck of the woods.  Congrats to the Rivet girls.

Bits and Pieces

-Scramble at 10 this morning.  Right now here on the hill just south of the golf course we have gray overcast skies but no rain!  Radar shows the green blob mostly east of us.

-Lady Patriots take on Turkey Run for the state title in girls basketball at 10:30 this morning.

-Sectional 63 championship between the Loogootee Lions and the North Daviess Cougars at 7:30 this evening.

-The Donut Barn in Odon is open till noon today.  Don't forget to get over there and get yourself a Saturday goodie and some Sunday yummies.

Sectional 63 Championship: Big Cat Fight

The North Daviess Cougars and the Loogootee Lions advanced to the sectional championship last night by defeating the Barr Reeve Vikings and the Vincennes Rivet Patriots. The Cougars won the rubber match in their cross country rivalry this season with Barr Reeve by a score of 45-41. The Vikings, down by ten at the end of the first quarter, came all the way back before finally succumbing.

In the second game of the night, Loogootee toppled the scrappy Patriots of Vincennes, 52-43, in spite of the super game by Kendall Vieke who scored 27 of his team's 43 points.

Tonight the Big Cats go at each other for the championship.

Note: The Sagarin ratings for the four teams that played last night are: North Daviess: 122; Loogootee: 130; Barr Reeve: 166; Vincennes: 184.

It surprised me that Loogootee has been the favorite for the sectional - at least around Loogootee, even though North Daviess has the better record and is playing at home. Of course, the home floor doesn't mean much in Sectional 63, a closely contested tournment down through the years. So, tonight: Expect a hugh cat fight that will last throughout the game and maybe even into overtime. Winner? It's a toss up. My heart is with the Lions but my gut tells me it's going to be the Cougars. Prove me wrong, Lions.

Saturday Scramble Start Time

10am.  Supposed to be rains starting tonight and going right on through to tomorrow night.  But I don't believe it.

Bits and Pieces

-Showtime in Odon tonight in boys basketball.  The Barr Reeve Vikings take on county rivals North Daviess in the first game with that followed by Vincennes battling the Loogootee Lions.  My predictions: Cougars over the Vikes in a bitterly contested contest for starters; Lions over the Patriots in a much easier contest to wrap things up.

-The Vincennes Lady Patriots, and probably more than half the school, head up to Fort Wayne later today, to take on the Turkey Run Lady Warriors tomorrow morning, a battle between the #1 and the #2 teams in 1A.  Got my fingers crossed for the Patriots who have been trying to close the deal for the past two years.  Third time's the charm.  Btw, Jeff Thompson is a first year coach of the Lady Warriors.  Impressive start for him.  The team's two losses were to 3A Benton Central in mid January and to, guess who, Vincennes Rivet, in a holiday tournament in December.  Score: 46-38.

-Friday Beauty Photo from an asian ladies golfer appreciation blog:  Christie Kerr and Paula Creamer in heels that make them five or six inches taller.  Can you imagine walking around in such shoes?!  Me neither.

-Weather guys calling for rain today.  Cloudy right now.  Guess I'll head on over there for a walk around, maybe some practice on and around the green.

Arizona Golf Shot Perfect For Lakeview Member Susan Fee

Susan Fee, out this morning at Lakeview with hubby Frank, had to share the good news from Arizona where the two of them had just spent a week wandering around different golf courses.  She got her very first hole-in-one.  The details:
On Feb 21st while playing The Duke at Rancho El Dorado, Maricopa, AZ. on hole #16, I got my first hole in one.  I was using my driver, an Adams A30 Series club, and a Precept Laddie golf ball. I had a great tee shot, playing to the left of the bunker guarding the front of the green.  We could not see the ball go in the cup, because it went over a mound between me and the green, but when we got up to the green and was looking all around trying to find my ball, my brother-in-law said look in the hole.  Wow!!  There it was and I went to hollering and jumping all around.
The foursome that I was with, was my husband Frank Fee, my brother-in-law Bob Fee, and his girlfriend, Beth Miller.

Susan admitted going a little crazy after finding the ball in the hole, and rightly so as she has been a long time golfer and had been looking for that first ace for some time.  In the books now, Susan.  Congratulations.  Btw, how many drinks did you buy when you got back to the clubhouse?  Just kidding.  Hope Frank treated you to a more than delicious dinner to continue the celebration.

Bits and Pieces

-Good crowd at the golf course yesterday taking advantage of the nicer weather.  Did get to finish my day with nine holes with Tracy Rayhill and Tony Trambaugh.  Some solid hits but for the most part, a pretty good display of early season golf.

-BYU key player, Brandon Davies, booted from team for rules violation - having sex with his girlfriend.  How archaic.  Pat Forde at espn.com:
Would I have wanted to attend college at a place that has rules governing just about every aspect of your daily life, including how you dress and whether you've shaved that morning? No, thank you. In my youth I was not sober enough, chaste enough, conformist enough, dogmatic enough or decaffeinated enough to have been a very good student at BYU.
Count me in that same group of  the 'no thank you, I think I'll go somewhere else' bunch.  Come to think of it, Notre Dame, back in the '50's and early '60's, would have been considered somewhat archaic as well: lights out at ten, daily Mass for those living on campus.  But that was before all the liberation movements of the 1960's that pretty much turned our society upside down.  One last thing: Now we know that the rest of the BYU players are celibates, right?  Yeah, right...  (Guess it depends on what the definition of sex is.)

-Did you note Emily Montgomery of the Vincennes Rivet girls basketball team walking around on crutches at the boys sectional last Tuesday night?  That would be two of the starters out with injuries for Saturday's state title game against Turkey Run.  Maybe it's not as serious as it looks.  And the other girl, Erin Wehrheim, might be able to play some.  The team does have a deep bench - one, two or three of the other girls will have to step up.  It will probably be five of them that step up.

-In big boy golf:  Jack Nicklaus, the 70 something reigning best golfer in history, says Tiger will beat his major record of 18 titles.  At the same time, Rory McIlroy, a youngster of 21, pretty much says Tiger is all washed up.  Fun stuff keeping TW in the news.

-Heading out to the golf course to open up.  More sun and temperatures in the high 50's today.  That's golf weather - grab your sticks and come on out.

Further details of the League at the link.

Barr Reeve and Vincennes Rivet Advance in Sectional 63

As expected, Barr Reeve and Vincennes Rivet polished off their opponents last night in Sectional 63 at North Daviess. The Vikings had absolutely zero trouble in manhandling the Washington Catholic Cardinals, 74-41. The Patriots, on the other hand, needed a late field goal by their super senior guard, Kendall Vieke, to stave off the pesky and determined Shoals Jug Rox, 47-44. Shoals own super senior guard, Garrett Bateman, had tied the score at 44 with a three pointer of his own with about ten seconds left in the game.

Note 1: Washiongton Catholic's Austin Jarrett was a delight to watch with his mastery in and around the basket. He led all scorers in the first game with 24 (think that's the correct number).

Note 2: Shoals Garrett Bateman needed 21 points to become the Jug Rox's all time leading scorer. Unofficially, he got 20, tying him with Ron Allbright who played for Shoals in the late 60's and early 70's (tks to Jim Bateman for the heads up on the Bateman/Allbright information).

Next up: Friday games: Barr Reeve vs North Daviess in the first game (3rd time this year and will be the rubber match); Vincennes Rivet vs Loogootee in the second game. Should be a great night of Hossier Hysteria.

Bits and Pieces

-From Michael Fitzpatrick and bleacherreport.com: Tiger Woods: has he finally hit rock bottom?  In the comments section, the author responds to a reader's comment:
...Woods all but choked coming down the stretch at the 2009 U.S. Open. He missed a short putt and made bogey on 15, missed another short putt for birdie on 17, and all in-all couldn't sink any of those must-make putts during the final two rounds at Bethpage.
I don't even worry about his swing - if the guy has lost his ability to make those must-make putts (missed short putts on 13, 15 and 17 during his match yesterday), he's finished. A lost putter has been the ultimate downfall of virtually ever great golfer in history.
So,  Tiger, forget the swing change.  No, go ahead with that but, in addition, get back on the putting green and find that magic that has been missing for way too long on the putting surface.  And, to answer Michael Fitzpatrick's question:  No, I don't think TW has hit rock bottom yet.  That will come when he, and the rest of us, realize that the wondrous and dominant Tiger that we saw at the US Open in 2008 is indeed a golfer who has disappeared.

-The Thursday Match Play League 2011 Information Sheet has been finalized and is posted here.  The Tuesday League was finalized several weeks ago and is here.  Just about time to announce the forming of the leagues for the new season.  Look for it in next week's Loogootee Tribune (and here, of course).

-Boys sectional tonight up in Odon.  I'll be there and I'll be rooting for Shoals and Barr Reeve.  Shoals finished up a 10-10 season with a loss to their sectional opponent, Vincennes Rivet.  The Rivet Patriots, btw, have overtime losses to both North Daviess and Barr Reeve and a blowout loss to Loogootee this season.  Time for payback, Jug Rox.  Lets see if I can find a good blue/white/black/red clothing combination.

-News item:  Tya Harmon's dad taking North Gibson's superintendent position starting July 1st.  Brian is currently superintendent at Barr Reeve where Tya is a junior.  Good news for Viking fans: the family is staying in Montgomery till Tya finishes up her senior year.

-Time for breakfast, then the golf course.  Sunny already and temperatures in the 50's this afternoon.  Think we can handle that.
